‘Take Our Country Back’: Chris Cassone Tells the Story of His Tea Party Anthem

Think back to where you were three years ago, in March 2009. President Obama had just been inaugurated. Nancy Pelosi was Speaker of the House, Harry Reid led a Senate majority of 59 Democrats, and they were in the process of ramming through Congress the $800 billion “stimulus” bill, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Where were you?

Chris Cassone was sitting at home, watching TV, trying to make sense of it, and growing increasingly worried about what was happening. Then one evening, while watching Glenn Beck on Fox News, Chris Cassone picked up his guitar and started “humming and strumming,” as he says. With a few minutes, he had the melody and words of a chorus, and then he began adding verses until he had a song:

Take it back! Take our country back.
Can’t you see that we’re under attack?
Draw a line in the sand
So they all understand
And our nation stays intact.
Take it back!

Little did he know how far that song would take him. Cassone first performed “Take Our Country Back” in public on March 21, 2009, at a Tea Party rally on the town square in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Then on April 15 — Tax Day 2009 — he performed it on “Fox & Friends,” and at three Tea Party rallies, in Hartford and New Haven, Conn., and Fishkill, N.Y. Here’s the video that Chris put together of his trip that day, featuring the studio recording of his song:

Eventually, “Take Our Country Back” carried Chris Cassone all the way to Washington, D.C., and the biggest Tea Party rally of them all, the 9-12 March on Washington, where he sang his song for a crowd numbering in the hundreds of thousands (the estimates are still in dispute) and a nationwide TV audience.

Chris Cassone tells this amazing saga in his new book, Take Our Country Back: One Song and One Man’s Story of the Tea Party and, in a gesture typical of his Christian generosity, Chris insisted on crediting me as his co-author. Busted: Why Is LGF’s Charles Johnson Now Embracing Louis Farrakhan?

When Charles Johnson went wacko and began purging commenters at his Little Green Footballs blog, he purged some of the most clever “Lizards” whose participation had once made LGF a must-read for many. Among the purged were those who formed Diary of Daedalus and The Blogmocracy, which today join forces to expose how CJ’s pro-Obama turn now requires him to become an apologist for the Nation of Islam’s Louis Farrakhan:

“He also has a strong message of responsibility and self-reliance for young African Americans, and that is why [critical race theory proponent Professor Derrick] Bell described him as a hero.”

Also:

“Farrakhan does have a positive, empowering component to his message.”

Well . . . OK. Except that in 2007, as the ex-Lizards demonstrate, Johnson condemned the Nation of Islam as “Farrakhan’s hate group.”

What explains this otherwise mysterious turn in Johnson’s view of Farrakhan and NOI? The simplest explanation is that four years ago, LGF was a conservative blog and CJ was expressing views shared by conservatives. Now, LGF is a left-wing site and thus Charles is required — as part of a general effort to defend the Democratic Party — to make excuses for President Obama’s association with Professor Bell, whose praise of Farrakhan is a matter of record. (Blame those “Jewish neoconservative racists“!)

So what Johnson once condemned as a “hate group” must now be praised for its leader’s “positive, empowering . . . message.”

At the time he publicly “parted ways with the Right” in November 2009, Charles Johnson made a big deal of his repugnance at being associated with various unsavory persons, groups and ideas. Yet you see that the logic of his politics now compel Johnson to defend Farrakhan — whom he formerly denounced in Oct0ber 2007, which was about the same time he was beginning his attacks on Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs for supposedly allying herself with unsavory elements in the European counter-jihad movement.

What happened? It’s hard to say, but when I saw the giant compilation of Johnson’s comments about Farrakhan over the years, I noticed something interesting: On April 29, 2008, CJ wrote indignantly that Obama must have known that Rev. Jeremiah Wright “traveled to Libya with Louis Farrakhan and met Muammar Gaddafi.”

However, less than five weeks later, when discussing a photo showing Michelle Obama with Farrakhan’s wife, Johnson replied to Zombie that this was “a big nothing . . . Eh.”

A big nothing? Really, Charles?

Considering how much hell you raised about Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer attending the Brussels conference with figures you deemed disreputable, how about a little consistency in regard to your guilt-by-association games? And now that you find yourself defending Farrakhan in order to defend Obama’s association with Derrick Bell, don’t you see how stupid that whole game is?

Never mind that now. My point is that you can see in this example a clear demonstration of just how quickly CJ’s opinions shifted: In April 2008, evidence of a Farrakhan connection to Obama was something Johnson took seriously. By June 2008, he dismissed similar evidence as “a big nothing.”

Rick Santorum’s Daughter Elizabeth Will Campaign for Her Father in Hawaii

This news was announced Saturday night:

The former Pennsylvania senator broke the news about his daughter while standing on stage at a campaign rally in Missouri with his wife, Karen, and second-oldest child, John.
“John just said to me there is an advantage of being the oldest,” Santorum joked.

I’ve contacted my editors at The American Spectator about sending me to Hawaii to cover this important developing news in the Republican presidential campaign, but it was hard to understand their answer due to the loud laughter. Elizabeth’s Hawaii schedule was announced in a press release from the Santorum campaign:

I concur with Don Surber here, particularly where issues such as birtherism are concerned:

One truism from the Internet is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of crazy. Unfortunately, many conservatives are driving themselves crazy over Barack Obama’s past. This did not work in 2008 and it will not in 2012.
In 2008, there was more and better ammo against Barack Obama. If his association with the Weather Underground and Jeremiah Wright could not sell him as a radical how can a video that shows him hugging a college professor prove that he is some sort of Manchurian Candidate for the Black Panthers now that he is in the fourth year of his presidency?
This won’t work. Derrick Bell did not throw bombs, not even verbal ones. He was a college professor with wild ideas. Einstein was a college professor with wild ideas, too. Shouldn’t colleges teem with college professor with wild ideas? The purpose of college is to expose young people to ideas — and the crazy people who have them.

However, there is a growing, non-tinfoil-hat understanding that Western Civilization in general, and the United States in particular, is under attack. The ideas of Derrick Bell and his ilk are not merely ‘wild ideas’: they represent an assault on History and truth itself. Now, I am by no means advocating censorship here. However, a vigorous, public review of everything this sad pack of jackwagons on the Left have been up to for the last half century is long overdue. Pretending that this is a distraction, and already was covered in 2008 is just giving #OccupyResoluteDesk a booster shot on the immunization he received from the media.

But the bigger point remains: the media deliberately and systematically worked to foist this fool upon us. The media itself has to be judged in the court of public opinion, not just #OccupyResoluteDesk. In passing, we voters, asleep at the switch these decades, have to be reminded that no one holds the media accountable except us.

The alternative to grinding out the history, exposing risible tools like Soledad O’Brien, &c, is to leave the Ruling Class with the impression that all they have to do is be patient and run out the clock to win. Our task is to prove them wrong.

Update: Bill Quick links, with a pessimistic note. I see his pessimism, and raise him a “So?”. Anyone can sit around and offer the Full Allahpundit. But, after we have collectively been kicked, in the face, while we are down, by the iron boot of Progressivism, we still have to do something. Or else we are tacitly concurring with the Commies.
