Fertility Facts: ‘It’s Not That We’re Stupid. It’s That We’ve Been Misinformed.’

At last, intelligent women are starting to speak out about how they’ve been misled about basic facts of reproductive science:

From the outside, Holly Finn certainly looks fertile.
With shoulder-length dark hair, smooth skin and a slim but curvaceous figure, the San Francisco-area writer could be any young mom with a baby on her hip.
But at 43, Finn says, her ovaries know better — and she would have, too, if not for what she believes is society’s widespread ignorance about infertility.
“I really feel that there are important pieces of information that don’t get passed along,” says Finn, who has now tried for four years to conceive through in-vitro fertilization. “I actually think it’s quite a brutal dishonesty.”
Most women aren’t taught — and don’t learn — basic facts about fertility and aging, says Finn, author of the e-book “The Baby Chase.” Instead, celeb moms the likes of Salma Hayek (a baby girl at 41), Marcia Cross (twins at 44) and Mariah Carey (twins at 41) make being an older mom look easy — and glamorous.
“It’s not that we’re stupid,” she says. “It’s that we’ve been misinformed.”

Whenever I write about this topic, I get outraged reactions from feminists who seem to think that explaining procreative biology is an insult to women. Postponing childbearing past age 30 involves a significant risk of infertility. And because the risks of birth defects (especially Down’s Syndrome) are much greater for pregnancies after age 35, delayed motherhood reduces a woman’s chances of having healthy children.

When a man says this, however, he will immediately be attacked as if he were advocating the kind of patriarchal dystopia described in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. It is therefore encouraging to see women like Finn calling attention to this kind of survey data:

Most women simply don’t realize that at 30, a healthy woman has about a 20 percent chance of conceiving per month and by the time she reaches 40, her odds drop to about 5 percent . . .
Instead, many of those surveyed thought that a 30-year-old woman would have a 70 percent chance of conceiving and that a 40-year-old’s chances could approach 60 percent.
They also believed that a 20-year-old woman might get pregnant in less than two months of unprotected sex, rather than the five months that is the average.
“It’s basic biology and basic knowledge of how age impacts your fertility if you’re a woman,” says Collura.
But most women aren’t getting those basics until it’s too late, said Dr. William Schoolcraft, medical director of the Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine in Denver and two other locations.
“They don’t even come in for fertility treatment until they’re literally in their 40s,” he said. “Some come in and they have run out of time.”

Finn’s 50-page Kindle booklet, The Baby Chase, is available from Amazon for $1.99. I wish that all those otherwise smart young women who think, “Well, that won’t happen to me,” would wake up and realize: It just might.  And I also wish people would realize that nightmare dystopias come in many flavors:

VIDEO: ‘Herman Cain Reminds Me of Ronald Reagan,’ Says Iowa Farmer

During my visit to Iowa in August, I met and interviewed former Iowa Farm Bureau chief Dean Kleckner, who is featured in Herman Cain’s Iowa ad that began airing last week:

NBC News reported:

Unlike Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who have been running TV ads on local stations in Iowa, Cain’s 60-second ad began airing on cable — FOX News Channel to be exact.
“The new television ad is a result of the strong fundraising that has occurred over the last ten days,” Steve Grubbs, Cain’s Iowa chairman, told NBC News. “Our supporters are rallying to Herman Cain’s defense and that means we will be able to take our message directly to voters.”
The ad has three Iowa farmers and one former farmer discussing how EPA regulations are hurting their business amidst scenes of farmland and other Iowa landmarks.
“Over-regulation is killing the American farmer. I think Herman Cain is the answer,” retired farmer Dean Kleckner says in the ad.
Kleckner served 10 years as president of the Iowa Farm Bureau, 14 years as president of the American Farm Bureau, and on the U.S. Trade Advisory Committee under three presidents.
“Herman Cain reminds me of Ronald Reagan and I knew Ronald Reagan. It is time to put the United back into the United States of America,” Kleckner continues in the ad.

One of my beefs about the Cain campaign — and I’ve been complaining about this to friends for weeks — is that they have not yet produced a single 30-second TV ad. Lots of online videos, but no 30-second TV spots. Which was OK, when they didn’t have enough money to buy TV time, but we’re now just seven weeks away from the Iowa caucuses, they’ve collected millions of dollars in contributions since September, and isn’t it time they produce a standard 30-second ad?

UPDATE: By the way, the new-and-improved HermanCain.com site isn’t improved enough. For example, when I saw Cain in South Carolina, he told me he would be in Iowa today, but good luck trying to find today’s itinerary on the site. Instead, I have to get the news from Politico:

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Herman Cain is back in Iowa Tuesday for to kick off a week of early-state campaigning that will take him to New Hampshire and Florida. . . .
Cain’s in first place, with 20 percent, though Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are all just points behind according to the Bloomberg News numbers out Monday. A second survey, taken by Kellyanne Conway’s polling company, also shows Cain in first place in Iowa, with a one point lead over Gingrich.
Steve Grubbs, Cain’s Iowa chairman and a veteran of the Steve Forbes and Bob Dole campaigns, said Tuesday that Cain would speak with reporters after each of the two Iowa events . . .

I don’t want to link Politico for Herman Cain news, OK? But when I can’t get Herman Cain news in a timely manner from HermanCain.com, I don’t have any other choice. The last time I talked to J.D. Gordon, he told me he now has a communications team of four people. What the hell are those people doing, if they’re not writing press releases and posting them on the Web site?

Is there no one in the Cain organization who understands the importance of timeliness in the news business? And don’t they understand that campaign activity is, in fact, news? The campaign’s Web site therefore could and should be a conduit for breaking news, because who knows better what the campaign is doing than the campaign’s own staff? Instead the site is posting stuff way out of date, so that by the time it’s on HermanCain.com, it’s obsolete.

Three polls this week — from Bloomberg, the Polling Company and Insider Advantage — show Cain leading Iowa. As of 11 a.m. today, none of that good news for Cain was reported anywhere on HermanCain.com. Talk all you want about running a “non-traditional campaign,” but tolerating incompetence isn’t “non-traditional,” it’s just stupid. I can ignore gaffes, but I can’t ignore basic communications failure like this.

A candidate’s Web site should be the first and best source for news about campaign activity. Your supporters (to say nothing of neutral objective journalists like me) shouldn’t have to go Googling around to try to figure out where the candidate will be campaigning from day to day.

NYPD Clears Out Occupiers

About damned time:

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on Tuesday defended his decision to clear the park in Lower Manhattan that was the birthplace of the Occupy Wall Street Movement, saying “health and safety conditions became intolerable” in the park where the protesters had camped out for nearly two months. . . .
“New York City is the city where you can come and express yourself,” the mayor said. “What was happening in Zuccotti Park was not that.” He said the protesters had taken over the park, “making it unavailable to anyone else.”
The mayor’s comments at a City Hall news conference came about seven hours after hundreds of police officers moved in to clear the park after warning that the nearly two-month-old camp would be “cleared and restored” but that demonstrators who did not leave would face arrest. The protesters, about 200 of whom have been staying in the park overnight, initially resisted with chants of “Whose park? Our park!”
The police commissioner, Raymond W. Kelly, said that nearly 200 people had been arrested, 142 in the park at 50 to 60 in the streets nearby. Most were held on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Via Memeorandum. Isn’t it weird that, in a city of 8 million people, a few hundred “Occupiers” could be portrayed as the spearhead of a broad-based popular movement? I mean, it’s almost as if there were some kind of bias in the media coverage or something.

Allred and Bialek’s Ex-Boyfriend: ‘No Wonder He Didn’t Want to Answer Questions’

Professor William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection has video of Gloria Allred’s press conference today with the ex-boyfriend of Cain accuser Sharon Bialek.

This whole story strikes me as profoundly weird: At the Bialek press conference last week, Allred waved a couple of affidavits from people to whom Bialek previously told her story — as if this proved something. But if all Bialek has is one side of a “he-said/she-said,” what does it matter that her ex-boyfriend attests to her side of the story?

So then today, Allred brought out the ex-boyfriend, Dr. Victor Zuckerman, for his own press conference, at which he read his statement and refused to take questions. And then Professor Jacobson did a quick search and discovered some details of Dr. Zuckerman’s 2010 bankruptcy:

In May 2010 (after the bench trial, but before the judgment was entered) Stratford Pediatric sold its assets to Central DuPage Hospital for $333,000.00 in cash. This money was mostly transferred to Zuckerman’s personal accounts. He soon went on a gambling and day trading spree and lost all of the money. In July 2010, Zuckerman moved to Louisiana. On September 15, 2010, Zuckerman filed a chapter 11 petition in the Western District of Louisiana. His creditors include, among others, Stratford Center (with claims of $675,000.00), his ex-wife (with claims of $89,000.00), and the IRS (with claims of $50,000.00).

So this guy blew more than $300,000 in a gambling spree, declared bankruptcy owing more than $800,000, while Bialek herself has a shaky financial history (never mind the cryptic comments of Bill Kurtis) and the other named accuser, Karen Kraushaar, seems to be a habitual complainant. Everybody keeps saying, “Four accusers! Where there’s smoke, there must be fire!” but when examined critically, the accusers whose names we know don’t seem especially upstanding people. What would we learn about the other two anonymous accusers if they weren’t anonymous?

Anyway, back to Gloria Allred:

Allred says it’s time for Cain to admit he does know Bialek, and “fully disclose” the specifics of the allegations against him. Cain’s strategy of “blanket denials simply won’t work,” she says.

This is absurd: Herman Cain says he doesn’t remember this woman whom, according to her, he met exactly twice in 1997. Since then, Cain has run for Senate in Georgia, built a career as a radio talk-show host, survive Stage 4 cancer, spoken at scores of Tea Party rallies, and launched a yearlong campaign for president. Yet if such a busy man says he doesn’t remember a woman he supposedly met twice 14 years ago, Allred wants us to conclude, Cain must be lying!

And if Cain is innocent, what’s wrong with “blanket denials”? Allred would have made a fine prosecutor in the Moscow show trials.

Rule 5 Monday

— compiled by Wombat-socho

Well, this has been a fine weekend to be without the Intertubes at home. Fortunately, unlike last week’s FMJRA, all I need for Rule 5 Monday is e-mail and WordPress, so let’s see what came in over the transom this week.

The POH Diaries lead off with Kate Upton, followed by a two-part midweek break from Randy’s Roundtable. Fishersville Mike brings us some good news from PSU for a change, and Eye of Polyphemus goes with some Katy Perry this week. Reaganite Republican spoils the fun with the first sharia-compliant Rule 5 post. The Rio Norte Line takes a gander at the new Bond Girl, and also Rachel Grant.

El Opinador Compulsivo checks in with a pair of Colombian bombshells, a report on sweatshop conditions, random pictures here here and here, as well as here, Dakota Fanning’s banned ad, and a high-res picture gallery.

A View From The Beach leads off with Catherine Bell, follows with Avril Lavigne, a review of Silvio Berlusconi’s women, advice for the women on settling, and a video purporting to be the Girls Summer Fail Competition.

Jake Finnegan’s Burkalesque Babe this week is Rachel McAdams. Troglopundit reports on Danica Patrick’s enormous pair, while the theme at Dustbury this week is women not on bicycles. Example A: Famke Janssen. Example B: Jane Seymour.

Proof Positive has Erin Heatherton, vintage babe Evelyn Ankers, another 49er cheerleader, this week’s installment of Sex In Advertising, and in a possibly disastrous crossing of the streams, Pinups For Ron Paul. Maggie’s Notebook has the Top Ten Hottest Blondes, and Three Beers Later checks in with not just Mitzi Gaynor but a Rule 5 poll! Late arrival: That Mr. G Guy with two things that go together: girls and guns!

Soylent Green starts the Rule 5 week early with Leticia Zuolaga and a Daylight Savings Time reminder before getting back into the groove with the large economy-sized Monday Motivationer. Then follows Humpday Hawtness, a shoutout to Bulgarian Go(Oglers), Jessica DeCarlo, the obligatory corsets, and supplementary snooch for Friday.

At The Camp of the Saints, it’s Nanci Li Brandi, the Rule 5 News, Cristina Buccino, Katrina Kaif, Erika Elfwencrona, and a bit of Witches’ Brew.

Thanks to everyone for their links and patience! To be included in next week’s Rule 5 roundup, please send your links to Rule 5 Wombat by November 19.

The Difference Between Junior And Senior Democrats Is The Number Of Zeros

by Smitty

The blogs are alight with the Worst Speaker in U.S. History undertaking actions which, while not illegal, fail to pass the smell test. From the American Spectator:

Yesterday’s “60 Minutes” on CBS included a report on members of Congress profiting from privileged information. The report was based on a upcoming book by Peter Schweizer, a research fellow at the conservative Hoover Institution, and includes instances of Rep. Spencer Bachus and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, among others, benefitting from investing in industries affected by legislation they were working on at the time. The segment is worth reading/watching.

Now, Princess Pelosi is a nationally known piece of work. One hopes that the factual details of the insider trading case will be sufficiently sordid that even the open sewer that is her district cannot stand her any more.

Democrat party hijinks are often more tawdry at lower levels. For a look at Prince George’s County, across the river in the Peoples’ Republic of Maryland, we get Jack B. Johnson,

Jack Bruce Johnson (born April 3, 1949) is an American politician who served as the county executive of Prince George’s County, Maryland from 2002 to 2010. On November 12, 2010, both Johnson and his wife were indicted on federal charges as part of a larger political corruption scandal in the county.[1] On May 17, 2011, Johnson pleaded guilty to extortion and witness- and evidence-tampering.

Today, the FBI released recordings of the bust:

For the first time, the public’s getting to hear private conversations between former Prince George’s County Executive Jack Johnson and his wife, former Prince George’s County Council member Leslie Johnson, recorded by the FBI as agents arrived at their home to serve a search warrant.
Leslie Johnson was at their Mitchellville home when the FBI arrived, and she had a panicked phone conversation with her husband. He instructed his wife to get a check out of his bedroom dresser drawer.
“Get the little box, and in the box there’s a check,” Jack Johnson told his wife. “Just tear it up or chew it up, or something.”
It was a $100,000 bribe from a developer, according to court documents.

Regarding the wife:

Authorities said when they searched her they found almost $80,000 in her underwear.

Let Nancy and the Johnsons be sentenced to spend a week with #OccupyDC, since the Democrat party is all about the little guy, and the #Occupy weenies are mostly Socialists like the Dems, right?
