As has become my habit in recent weeks, I name and shame those among us who can’t read a calendar, were distracted by some damn fool thing like college football, or were a bit too slow cleaning the drool out of their keyboards. Anyway, without further abuseado, Mr. McEnroe comes out of the penalty box with the toothsome Angela Turkusawa. I thought at first he was joking about Polish bikini models, but I guess not. Also late: Donald Douglas with this Victoria’s Secret video, Mila Kunis, and Britney Spears. Soylent Green’s Monday Motivationer last week was a beaver-baring beauty queen, followed by Bethanie BandersnatchBadertscher, Kyla Cole, a complaint about Scarlett Johansson’s phone picture quality (illustrated, natch!), the ever-popular Corset Friday, and Marketa Janska, who cannot be found at your local bakery.


This week’s fresh linkage begins with Fishersville Mike and the Big Zooey Theory. Next up, Randy’s Roundtable has Stacy Keibler and Priscilla Monroe. Meanwhile, Eye of Polyphemus crosses the streams by combining Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie in one post. Mitch Daniels Thinks BHO Is Half An Adam Ant Fan

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels chose not to join the Republican race for the presidential nomination in 2012, but weighed in on front-runners and the political landscape Sunday.
“I don’t have anything original to say,” about the GOP field, Daniels said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” but noted, “the two governors … for the most part seem to be the predominant personalities in the race,” referring to Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Daniels said for him, 2012 is an opportunity to capture the White House from a “desperate” president.

Desperate, yes, but still not prepared to face economic reality with a serious face:

. . .the Obama administration has just released a document called “Living Within Our Means and Investing in the Future: The President’s Plan for Economic Growth and Deficit Reduction.” If you’re curious about the first part of the title — “Living Within Our Means” — Veronique de Rugy pointed out at National Review that under this plan debt held by the public will grow from just over $10 trillion to $17.7 trillion by 2021. In other words, the president’s definition of “Living Within Our Means” is to burn through the equivalent of the entire German, French, and British economies in new debt between now and the end of the decade.

From Marco Rubio to Herman Cain: How the Crist Factor Hurt Perry in Florida

Sarah Rumpf helped facilitate Florida state Rep. Scott Plakon’s endorsement of Herman Cain, which in turn helped Cain score his crushing upset of Texas Gov. Rick Perry in Saturday’s Orlando “Presidency5” straw poll. Today, I spoke at length with “Sunshine State Sarah” to get the backstory of that endorsement, and she pointed out a little-noticed aspect of Perry’s humiliating defeat.

“Perry hired a lot of the Charlie Crist people,” she said, referring to former aides to the permatanned ex-RINO governor who got crushed in last year’s Tea Party uprising that sent Marco Rubio to the Senate. Among the Perry campaign’s top Florida hires, only Anthony Bustamante — who is “awesome,” Sarah said — was a known ally of Rubio.

While many of Crist’s ex-staffers were innocent victims of their boss’s stunning betrayal of the GOP, some of them — including some hired by Team Perry — were suspected as dirty tricksters. The Crist association gave a slight tinge of RINO-ism to the Perry campaign, undermining the Texan’s desired image as a solid conservative. So when Perry accused opponents of illegal immigration of being heartless, it stirred bitter memories of Crist’s “centrist” ways among those who had fought hard to elect Rubio.

Rumpf held one of the first Orlando-area fundraisers for Rubio’s campaign, and Plakon was also an early Rubio supporter. Both Rumpf and Plakon are backing Rubio ally Adam Hasner in the 2012 GOP Senate primary to take on Democrat Bill Nelson. It was during a Friday forum for the Republican Senate candidates that Plakon mentioned his idea of endorsing Herman Cain.

Rumpf was sitting with Plakon and his wife Susie (who has been a Cain fan for months), and Rumpf offered to connect Plakon with Cain’s campaign staff. Rumpf used Twitter to contact Cain spokeswoman Ellen Carmichael in Atlanta, Carmichael gave Rumpf the phone numbers of Cain’s staffers in Orlando, including Nathan Naidu. That evening about 7 p.m., a private meeting was arranged between Cain and the Plakons, and the endorsement was announced at a jam-packed rally of Cain supporters at the Rosen Centre Hotel. The impact of this endorsement should not be underestimated. He may not be well known (yet) outside the state of Florida, but he is extremely well-liked here and very active in conservative political causes around the state. Americans for Prosperity’s Florida Chapter named him their 2011 State Representative of the Year, and has been a leader in opposing ObamaCare, sponsoring the Florida Health Care Freedom Act. Scott Plakon is a solid fiscal and social conservative and has owned and operated several successful businesses; he is the exact type of state leader Republican presidential candidates should want on their team.

Plakon’s endorsement was an enormous boost for Cain on the eve of the straw-poll, and helped convince Florida Republicans that Cain is a legitimate presidential contender.

After the 2010 campaign, when state party chairman Jim Greer and NRSC chairman John Cornyn connived to “fix” the race for Crist 15 months before the GOP primary, rank-and-file Republicans in Florida have become sick and tired of being told to “get in line,” Sarah told me.

As for the meaning of Cain’s victory in the Orlando straw poll, Sarah said, “This was not a protest vote. This was not a temper tantrum.”

When I asked her about one interpretation that Beltway pundits have made of the Orlando results, Sarah was adamant: “Nobody was talking about Chris Christie — nobody.”

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Bill Kristol.

And Yet, Whither The States?

Insty points to a CNBC piece:

About 2.3 million homeowners could have refinanced their mortgages last year if they didn’t owe more than their homes were worth or if lending standards weren’t so strict, according to a Federal Reserve study released Thursday.

Housing is the second most egregious area of federal over-reach, after entitlements.

We will begin to see some hope for change when the source of the problem, federal over-reach, is properly understood. Those houses exist in states. If those states are too economically crippled to do much to affect their housing markets, then That Is A Problem.

No house I have ever heard of exists in more than one state. All of this federal housing involvement is a pile of crap. What GOP candidates are going to butcher the Fannie/Freddie sacred cows?

Rather, what GOP candidates are going to perpetuate this evil? Let’s figure that out right now, so that this blog can call those candidates the risible RINOs that they are.

Readers will excuse my lack of blogging today, as I’ve been on the phone and working on an article about the Orlando straw poll. Smitty seems to have been a busy blog beaver, perhaps having escaped the Third World bandwidth suckage en route from Afghanistan toward home, so a dearth of updates is fortunately not a problem.

However, if I don’t write a post or two from time to time, readers will start to wonder if I’ve been kidnapped, so I’ve got to blog something, right? Anyway, while checking my e-mail, I received a pleasant reminder of why I signed up for all those stupid left-wing lists, giving me a chance to learn what the Left is doing. Democracy for America (DFA) is raising money for socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders:

Games As A Teaching Opportunity

At the Chicago Toy and Game Fair:

This year we picked up the new version of the old classic, Monopoly.  It’s pretty cool how the board is now round, they have replaced all the paper money (remember the pink 500’s?) with credit cards, the properties are (terribly realistically) priced in the millions, instead of hundreds and there’s the electronic “chance” that interrupts every now and then for comic relief.  You actually swipe your credit card to load the $2M when you pass “GO!”

If the money is all electronic, you could have the bank inflate the currency, and show just how immoral the Federal Reserve is to young people.

Never usually one to do anything without great fanfare, Niall Ferguson, the bombastic television historian, has quietly married Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the former Dutch MP, who lives under a fatwa after writing the screenplay for Submission, a film critical of Islam.

What a courageous lady. I read Nomad, which showed a gutsy lady in action. This blog truly wishes her and Niall all happiness, success, and health.

I’ll Give You Three Reasons, Ann

I’ve never understood why people who don’t trust convictions agonize over the death penalty but blandly accept life imprisonment.

  1. The bleeding hearts are compensating for their guilt over supporting the butchery of the unborn by piously bleating against the death penalty.
  2. The Iron Law is served by bloated legal bureaucracies surrounding the death penalty.
  3. As I was exploring the other day, the act of feeding otherwise intelligent people contradictory beliefs has some interesting, negative long-term effects. It’s all about the Lefty goal of training people to swallow hooey.

Despite #1 above, I’m not a tremendous death penalty fan. I’m not absolutely opposed, for cases of Timothy McVeigh-level certainty. It’s just not a question about which any exuberance is a Good Thing, in my opinion.
