When in Doubt, Blame Palin!

Posted on | January 12, 2011 | 26 Comments

#BlamePalin became a sarcastic Twitter hashtag yesterday. Among other things, I blamed her for Auburn’s game-winning field goal against Oregon. Also, my four-day streak without an Instalanche.

Liberals have made Palin their all-purpose scapegoat, the demon-figure whose existence relieves them of the burden for coming up with rational explanations of why bad things happen. The evasion of responsibility being a key policy goal of liberalism, you can understand why she’s become so valuable to them.

Blaming Palin is, in this regard, a lot like blaming racism — excuse me, I meant, “raaaaacism!” — for every ill afflicting American society. This never-ending finger-pointing search for scapegoats is the topic of my latest American Spectator column:

The deranged man had been steadily going downhill. His bizarre anti-social behavior and angry outbursts had caused him to be suspended from college classes. He spiraled downward into a vortex of madness and nursed a weird political grievance until finally he went on a murderous rampage with a 9-mm semi-automatic pistol, killing six people and wounding more than a dozen others.
But nobody blamed Sarah Palin or the Tea Party for this bloody crime, because it was December 1993, and the deranged gunman was Colin Ferguson. And his killing spree didn’t happen in Arizona, but on New York’s Long Island Railroad, where he opened fire in a train full of rush-hour commuters.
The remarkable parallels between Ferguson’s mass murder and Saturday’s shootings in Tucson include not only the choice of weapons and the number of victims killed, but also the fact that in both cases, liberals downplayed the idiosyncratic motives of the gunmen and immediately seized upon both crimes to advance their political agenda. . . .

You should read the whole thing. But if you don’t, I’ll just blame Sarah Palin. Everything is her fault now.

News From the Department of Obvious: Jared Loughner ‘Was Sick in the Head’

Posted on | January 12, 2011 | 13 Comments

Why New York Times reporters get the big bucks:

“He was a nihilist and loves causing chaos, and that is probably why he did the shooting, along with the fact he was sick in the head,” said Zane Gutierrez, 21 . . .
“Jared felt nothing existed but his subconscious,” Mr. Gutierrez said. “The dream world was what was real to Jared, not the day-to-day of our lives.”
“He would ask me constantly, ‘Do you see that blue tree over there?’ He would admit to seeing the sky as orange and the grass as blue,” Mr. Gutierrez said. “Normal people don’t talk about that stuff.”

Gutierrez and his buddy Loughner used to do target practice together.

So . . . you’ve got a nihilist wacko friend who likes shooting guns, and you don’t see that as maybe a problem or something? OK, never mind that part. In a story with three bylines and five “contributor” tags, the New York Times did manage to get some important news:

The police were sent to the home where Jared L. Loughner lived with his family on more than one occasion before the attack here on Saturday that left a congresswoman fighting for her life and six others dead, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said on Tuesday.

That little news nugget tends to confirm the controversial blog post by Cholla Jumps:

[Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik] and his office have had previous contact with the alleged assailant in the past . . .
Jared Loughner has been making death threats by phone to many people in Pima County including staff of Pima Community College, radio personalities and local bloggers. When Pima County Sheriff’s Office was informed, his deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system. It was also suggested that further pressing of charges would be unnecessary and probably cause more problems than it solved as Jared Loughner has a family member that works for Pima County. . . .
Every victim of his threats previously must also be wondering if this tragedy could have been prevented if they had been more aggressive in pursuing charges against Mr. Loughner. . . .
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department was aware of his violent nature and they failed to act appropriately.

Hmmmmm. Might be kind of interesting if, instead of Rush Limbaugh’s “vitriol” being to blame, the blame belongs with Sheriff Dupnik. Meanwhile at the Wall Street Journal, an eminent psychiatrist talks about more general failures of the mental-health system.

Vitriolic Rhetoric, Anyone?

Posted on | January 11, 2011 | 20 Comments

“Republicans don’t believe in the imagination, partly because so few of them have one, but mostly because it gets in the way of their chosen work, which is to destroy the human race and the planet. Human beings, who have imaginations, can see a recipe for disaster in the making; Republicans, whose goal in life is to profit from disaster and who don’t give a hoot about human beings, either can’t or won’t. Which is why I personally think they should be exterminated before they cause any more harm.”
— Michael Feingold, Village Voice, Jan. 13 2004

That’s just one of the “Top 10 Examples of Liberal Hate” cited by Human Events and you should read the whole thing.

Strange to say, that particular example didn’t occur in a political column, but in a theater review. I’d love to take a moment to “tone down the rhetoric,” I’m too busy destroying the human race and the planet while trying to avoid my own extermination. Work, work, work . . .

When Did Sarah Palin Say ‘Put Him Against the Wall and Shoot Him’?

Posted on | January 11, 2011 | 16 Comments

Oh, wait. Excuse me. It wasn’t Sarah Palin who said that:

On October 23, The Scranton Times reported that Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-Pa., said this about Florida’s new Republican Governor Rick Scott:
“That Scott down there that’s running for governor of Florida,” Mr. Kanjorski said. “Instead of running for governor of Florida, they ought to have him and shoot him. Put him against the wall and shoot him. He stole billions of dollars from the United States government and he’s running for governor of Florida. He’s a millionaire and a billionaire. He’s no hero. He’s a damn crook. It’s just we don’t prosecute big crooks.”

“I don’t remember a media firestorm erupting after Kanjorski engaged in this vitriolic rhetoric,” says Nice Deb.

‘Progressive Secularization of Society’ Leaves Humanity ‘Thirsty for God’

Posted on | January 11, 2011 | 7 Comments

The quote is from a guy who wears funny hats. While I prefer a fedora myself, it’s hard to argue with Pat Archbold:

You know who I blame for the Tucson shooting? I blame Jared. He chose sin. He chose evil. He chose to buy the gun and to shoot people. . . .
I blame Jared Loughner. . . . He is a man who rejected God, rejected grace, and chose murder.

A very interesting theory, sir. That’s the kind of rhetoric — all that talk about “sin,” and “evil” and “God” and “grace” — that will get you denounced as a theocratic Christofascist godbag by Queen C*** of F*** Mountain and other enlightened advocates of secular salvation who believe that man can justify himself by his own deeds.

“Thou shalt not kill” is a simple thing to understand, which is why it is rejected by enlightened advocates of secular salvation who cherish their “right” to kill babies. If it’s so simple that anyone can understand it, you see, then there is no intellectual glory to be had in espousing it. Why should the intellectual elite embrace a simple truth, when a sophisticated lie — “penumbras formed by emanations” and all that stuff — is so much more flattering to their sense of their own superiority?

“Also in the deserts of the secularized world, the soul of man is thirsty for God, for the living God,” says the Man Who Wears Funny Hats, prescribing “renewed evangelization” as the remedy. Of course, the enlightened sophisticates will hasten to say, this “evangelization” would violate the rights of baby-killers, because “Thou shalt not kill” is the kind of theocratic godbag stuff that only hateful bigots believe in.

And no fashionable conservative wants to be a hateful bigot.

But I’ve never been fashionable, and Lisa Graas is correct that there is “a troubling trend in the conservative sphere,” an abandonment of the duty of “defending America’s traditional Christian values.”

Just don’t expect me to wear a funny hat, OK?

Mission Accomplished, Markos Moulitsas

Posted on | January 11, 2011 | 31 Comments

You can’t un-Tweet it, you see. Before the suspect had been identified, before his motive was known, you blamed Sarah Palin for an atrocious crime of which she was utterly innocent. The facts of your cruel defamation are chronicled precisely by Professor Willliam Jacobson:

As far as I can tell, Matthew Yglesias of Think Progress was the first person to spread the so-called Palin target map at 1:45 p.m.  The now infamous Markos Moulistas “mission accomplished, Sarah Palin” tweet did not take place until 2:19 p.m.  Yglesias’ tweet was retweeted a total of 271 times and the image of the map he posted 883 times as of this writing. . . .
The massacre had been hijacked for political purposes not based on facts, but on a desire for retribution against Palin specifically, and the Tea Parties and conservatives in general.  A point I have made time and again, is that there was and is no evidence that the shooter ever saw the Palin map.
The Palin connection was a complete fabrication created in the minds of Messrs. Yglesias, Moulitsas, and countless others with an axe to grind.

“Now infamous,” what a lovely phrase! The stain of your disgrace could not be darker, Markos, for what can be more heinous than to bear false witness — yea, even blood libel! — against the innocent? Read more
