Rule 5 Sunday: Julie Strain, RIP

— compiled by Wombat-socho
This week we pay tribute to the late Julie Strain, who died last week from complications of early-onset dementia, believed to be caused by a head injury sustained in a fall from a horse in her 20s. After being named Penthouse Pet of the Month in June 1991 and Pet of the Year for 1993, Julie appeared in over 100 movies, earning her the title of “Queen of the B Movies”; her best-known role was as the voice of the eponymous heroine in Heavy Metal 2000. She is also recognizable as the model for a ton of paintings by Julie Bell, Olivia de Berardinis, and Boris Vallejo, and did modeling for photographers as well. Here she is doing a pretty decent Bettie Page impression.

Modern Motherhood, Florida-Style
Posted on | January 17, 2021 | Comments Off on Modern Motherhood, Florida-Style

Headline from the Tampa Tribune:
Florida woman has abandoned three babies
at apartment complexes since 2016, police say
I include that headline so that Stephen Green doesn’t miss this story in his next “Florida Man Friday” roundup. The details:
Investigators have identified the biological mother of three newborns who’ve been found at apartment complexes in the Orlando area since 2016, police said.
Previous DNA testing had confirmed that the babies were siblings, and investigators connected with their mother through additional testing late last year, Orlando police Lt. Frank Chisari told reporters Wednesday morning.
The mother currently has several other children in her care, police said.
Investigators are working with the state attorney’s office to determine what charges may be brought against the woman, who police did not publicly identify.
Chisari added that the woman appeared to have abandoned the babies out of “pure desperation.”
The most recent baby was found in July 2019 with a note that said she left the baby because she feared the child’s father, news outlets reported.
The first baby was found in 2016, and the second was found in 2017.
Chisari declined to say whether the father has been identified.
“It seems like somebody who was just at the end of their rope,” Chisari told reporters.
He said the woman learned she was pregnant at a late stage during all three pregnancies, and kept it a secret before delivering the children in private.
“I guess she watched a lot of YouTube videos,” Chisari said, describing how the children were delivered discreetly, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
If she “currently has several other children in her care,” but “feared the child’s father” to such an extent that she has abandoned three babies, doesn’t this suggest a serious domestic violence situation?
There must be a fascinating story behind this, and you might expect that journalists would do the footwork necessary to get that backstory, rather than simply quoting what police said at a press conference. What factor could possibly explain this lack of journalistic curiosity?

Democrats and the Media (But I Repeat Myself) Are Trying to Destroy America
Posted on | January 16, 2021 | Comments Off on Democrats and the Media (But I Repeat Myself) Are Trying to Destroy America

Yesterday, Ace of Spades linked to an essay that included this:
Starting in the second decade of the 1900s, certain Communists began seeing in modernism a potential advertisement for the values of a mass society of industrial workers laboring under the direction of a small group of engineers. In other words, this aesthetic — which whole swaths of the Western world were already in the process of quickly adopting — could also be the perfect delivery mechanism for their political ideology. One hundred years later, we find ourselves in the middle of a similar cultural and political struggle.
You can read the rest of that by Alana Newhouse, who examines how an ideal of “flatness” — conformity, homogeneity, the destruction of individualism and the end of actual diversity — has been advanced by Internet technology. We must now endorse whatever beliefs the Party requires, or be destroyed. Dissent against the Party is treason. We are all Winston Smith in Room 101, expected to agree that 2+2=5, if that’s what the Party decides. This is about power, and those who wield power on behalf of the Party — the 20-something SJWs in charge of “fact checks” for the media, and “safety” for social-media platforms — will target you as an enemy if you question their authority to decide what is true.
This is why the phrase “white supremacy” is being slung around so promiscuously by Democrats and their media allies, as if anyone who didn’t vote for Joe Biden is a violent neo-Nazi skinhead:
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said Friday on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” that she could not stay in the secure location with Republican members of Congress during the Capitol Hill riots because they sympathize with white supremacist cause.
Maddow said, “Let’s talk about that in terms of members of Congress and congressional staff as well. You are saying that you didn’t feel safe going to that extraction point because you believe, knowing them, that there were members of Congress you didn’t trust not to betray your location and put you in danger in that way. Can you talk a bit more about that, why you believed that, if what you believed about that, what you know about that is something that should be part of the investigation? Or is it part of the investigation that’s been announced into whether members of Congress are complicit here?”
(Note well that Maddow and Ocasio-Cortez are tag-teaming here. Without any actual evidence, Maddow asks Ocasio-Cortez about “whether members of Congress are complicit” in the Jan. 6 riot.)
Ocasio-Cortez said, “I can’t speak as to what is currently under investigation specifically or not, but there are members of Congress that have made public comments. Comments like that Muslim Americans should not hold public office. They’ve made public comments that are quite closely aligned with the beliefs of white supremacists and white supremacist sympathizer organizations. These are all public record. And, you know, people of color are not safe around any individual who, frankly, sympathizes with a white supremacist cause. And it doesn’t matter if you’ve been elected to Congress or not. It is a complete abdication of any responsibility that we all have to protect and defend and be there for each other as human beings and certainly as Americans. So it wasn’t safe. And the implications of that are quite dire. To not be in a secure location because being in the insecure location seems like a safer bet than being in a secure location. I mean, it’s pretty scary. I can also say I was not the only member of Congress that felt that way. You know, not every member was in that secure room.”
AOC said “white supremacist” three times in about 10 seconds. If you are one of the 74 million Americans who voted to reelect President Trump, AOC is calling you a “white supremacist.” By this, she means, you are a potential terrorist. Every Republican voter should be fired from their job and sent to prison — that is what AOC and Democrats have in mind.
There will be no liberty — no First Amendment protection of free speech, no right to dissent — in the one-party regime that Democrats are preparing to implement. Joe Biden and the Democrats have in mind nothing less than the destruction of America as we know it.
John Weaver: ‘The Truth Is I’m Gay’
Posted on | January 16, 2021 | Comments Off on John Weaver: ‘The Truth Is I’m Gay’

Sunday, I blogged about the accusation that John Weaver, the former top campaign aide to John McCain and co-founder of the anti-Trump “Lincoln Project,” had been sexually harassing young men. Now he has been forced out of the Lincoln Project:
Lincoln Project cofounder John Weaver is no longer affiliated with the Democratic Super PAC after admitting — in the classic tradition of the Friday evening news dump — to having “inappropriate” sexual conversations with young men.
“The truth is that I’m gay,” Weaver told former Washington Free Beacon journalist Lachlan Markay in a prewritten statement. “And that I have a wife and two kids who I love. My inability to reconcile those two truths has led to this agonizing place.”
Weaver reportedly took a medical leave of absence from the Lincoln Project over the summer, and will not be returning to the controversial Super PAC.
Over the past few days, dozens of young men have come forward with accusations that Weaver engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct, including text messages and phone conversations, as well as “grooming” them by promising lucrative career opportunities in exchange for sex. The allegations were broght to light through the reporting of journalists Ryan Girdusky and Scott Stedman.
Weaver admitted to making the young men “uncomfortable through my messages that I viewed as consensual mutual conversations,” which included at least one instance in which Weaver allegedly emailed an unsolicited photo of his penis. However, he appeared to suggest the men accusing him of grooming them, or offering favors in exchange for sex, are lying, perhaps for nefarious reasons.
“While I am taking full responsibility for the inappropriate messages and conversations,” Weaver wrote in the statement, “I want to state clearly that the other smears being leveled at me … are categorically false and outrageous.” The emergence of the allegations, Weaver suggested, was facilitated by political critics of the Lincoln Project.
Wait — “dozens of young men”? This implies a number in the 25-30 range, at least. Your homosexuality is not really secret, if you’re engaged in such large-scale solicitation. It’s what’s called an “open secret,” like Kevin Spacey — everybody knew he was gay, but pretended they didn’t know, or at least didn’t make an issue of it. But notice how Weaver operated, offering “lucrative career opportunities” to young men. We may suspect he effectively blacklisted any young man who rejected his advances. Certainly, anyone who told the truth about Weaver would have feared career damage. So if a young man wanted to work in GOP consulting, he either submitted to Weaver’s advances or at least kept his mouth shut about the “open secret.” Politics is a sordid business, and John Weaver is the tip of an iceberg of political perversion.
