Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Posted on | November 28, 2024 | Comments Off on Happy Thanksgiving to All!

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
He chastens and hastens His will to make known;
the wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
Sing praises to His name, He forgets not His own
.

What a wonderful holiday! Turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potato souffle, pecan pie — we’re living the good life here at the McCain homestead. Half of our children and one-third of our grandchildren will be among those gathered around the table for this afternoon’s feast. Our eldest daughter is with her family in Florida, our Army son with his family in Alaska, and third-year law student Jefferson is with his girlfriend’s family in Michigan. Despite the fact that not all our offspring will be here for Thanksgiving this year, we are nonetheless grateful for the many blessings we do enjoy. And we will try not to grumble about such misfortunes as today’s pro football schedule, with the NFL serving up such turkeys as the Giants (2-9) versus the Cowboys (4-7). We understand that the league officials in charge of scheduling could not have predicted how bad those teams would be. The Cowboys were coming off a 13-win season last year, but now they’ve completely collapsed and the Giants are so awful they cut their former “franchise” quarterback and will now be starting Tommy DeVito.

Probably most readers don’t care about the NFL, and you came here expecting some kind of political commentary. Well, how about Kamala as your alcoholic aunt rambling incoherently at Thanksgiving?

We can afford to laugh at that, as we give thanks that our nation has been spared from the Kamala Harris presidency. By the way, do you know how the second verse of that Thanksgiving hymn goes?

Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
so from the beginning the fight we were winning:
the Lord was at our side — the glory be Thine!

“From the beginning the fight we were winning” — pardon me for employing that phrase in a mere secular context, but it is appropriate to the recent political campaign. Our friend Dana Pico calls attention to a confession from senior Harris campaign advisor David Plouffe:

Plouffe said the campaign’s internal polling never had Harris ahead of Trump.
“We didn’t get the breaks we needed on Election Day,” he said. “I think it surprised people, because there was these public polls that came out in late September, early October, showing us with leads that we never saw.”

Because I never talk about my day job, I can’t tell you exactly how much vindication that confession gives me, but it’s a whole lot. Do you remember what the polls looked like in September? Harris was ahead by four points, said CBS News. No, wait, she was ahead by five points according to NBC News. And then Reuters said, “Hold me beer — Harris is ahead by six points!” Those polls were all bullshit, and I knew they were bullshit at the time, but it’s nice to have the confirmation from a senior advisor to Harris that even they knew those polls were bullshit.

Harris was never ahead of Trump, whose victory was a sure thing all along — “from the beginning the fight we were winning.” As to why this should have been so, I don’t want to get too theological:

For generations, American school children learned the story of the First Thanksgiving as having been celebrated by the Pilgrims of New England at Plymouth. Vaguely I recall being a kindergartner, with a feathered Indian headdress (actually made of construction paper) and participating in a Thanksgiving pageant in which the Pilgrims wore black hats (also made of construction paper), relating the tale of how the English colonists had learned from the natives how to plant corn, thus ensuring the survival of the settlement. Public schools in Georgia did not yet offer kindergarten, so we attended the one at Austell Methodist Church, with Mrs. Bookout as our teacher, and the religious significance of Thanksgiving was emphasized.
As familiar as the tale of that first Thanksgiving in Massachusetts is to most Americans, it was not actually the first Thanksgiving in America. That honor belongs to Virginia, where the Good Ship Margaret arrived from England in 1619 carrying 37 men who settled at Berkeley Plantation. These men were Anglicans, not Puritans, but their two-and-half-month trans-Atlantic voyage had been perilous, beset by storms, and during their journey they had earnestly prayed to God for their safety. . . .

The Agony of #NeverTrump: His Comeback Has Destroyed Their Prestige

Posted on | November 26, 2024 | Comments Off on The Agony of #NeverTrump: His Comeback Has Destroyed Their Prestige

If you want to see something funny — that is, assuming you have a sadistic sense of humor — you should go watch YouTube highlights of The Bulwark’s Election Night podcast, featuring Bill Kristol, Tim Miller, Sarah Longwell, Jonathan V. Last and company in a slow downhill slide from hope to despair. Perhaps never in human history has disappointment been more well deserved. You have to remember how and why the #NeverTrump Grift started to truly appreciate its squalid denouement. If you go back to early 2015, the “smart” money among conservative pundits was on either Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz as the likely Republican nominee. The neocon types like Rubio better, since he came with a Bush-connected political pedigree. There were other hopefuls — Scott Walker, Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina, Mike Huckbee, John Kasich, et al. — but Rubio and Cruz were seen as real contenders.

Then came the fateful day in June 2015 when Donald Trump rode down that escalator and things began to change. At first, Trump’s candidacy was viewed as a sort of joke, a publicity stunt that surely wouldn’t amount to much. Or would it? After going all-in on the 2012 campaign (“Doomed Beyond All Hope of Redemption”), I’d decided to avoid the 2016 campaign and was more or less neutral about the GOP primary. But then in September 2015, I got a call from Pete Da Tech Guy, who was covering a Trump rally in New Hampshire. “Stacy, this Trump thing is for real,” Pete told me. “You wouldn’t believe the size of this crowd.”

There was a real grassroots surge of support for Trump, and so the attitude of the Professional Conservative Pundit crowd turned from ridicule to hatred. Whereas they had originally treated Trump as a joke, now he was seen as threat. Their main point seemed to be that Trump could not possibly beat Hillary Clinton. Beyond whatever disagreements they might have had with Trump on any policy, the pundits simply could not imagine Trump winning the 2016 general election but — perhaps more to the point — his winning the GOP nomination would mean that their own favorite Republican candidates would be denied a shot at the White House. Most people can’t comprehend the selfish careerism of the Professional Conservative Pundit crowd, for whom prestige and influence are their real stock-in-trade. They climbed aboard the #NeverTrump bandwagon because it seemed like the “smart” thing to do.

After all, if Trump could not possibly beat Hillary (which was what the pundits kept telling us), then even if he did win the GOP nomination, the #NeverTrump crowd would be vindicated in November 2016, and step forward ready to assert their rightful place as the divinely ordained Intellectual Leaders of the Conservative Movement™.

They bet their bankroll against Donald Trump, and when he won in 2016 despite their opposition, they doubled-down against him. So here we are, eight years later, and now Trump is more popular than ever:

The Hill reports Trump’s rating hit 54 percent in the wake of his runaway election win, which is up from 48 percent pre-election contest, according to an Emerson College poll cited by the outlet.
Trump is viewed most favorably by men, at 61 percent, while 48 percent of women view him favorably.
Among white voters, 59 percent view him favorably, while 53 percent of Hispanics and 28 percent of Black voters view him favorability, the poll found. The Hill offered further detail:
Fifty-five percent of voters under 30 expressed a favorable view of Trump, according to the poll. He is viewed most positively among Americans in their 40s and 50s, with 60 percent viewing him favorably, while 48 percent of Americans over 70 years old view him favorably.
The poll also asked Americans if they didn’t expect the final results of the 2024 race and found that 46 percent of voters were surprised that Trump beat Vice President Harris. Among those who voted for Harris, 67 percent said they were surprised by the results, while 71 percent of Trump voters said they were not surprised.
The poll was conducted two weeks after election day, from November 20 to 22, amid the Trump transition back into the White House.
The president-elect has named most of his nominees for Cabinet posts and choices for senior staff positions, who will help carry out his agenda.

This is very good news for Trump, and for sadists who enjoy watching their enemies suffer paroxysms of agony. The #NeverTrump grifters are doubly humiliated, and are running out of chumps to swindle.

FMJRA 2.0: Not Thinking About Baseball For Once

Posted on | November 24, 2024 | Comments Off on FMJRA 2.0: Not Thinking About Baseball For Once

— compiled by Wombat-socho

I spent most of last week grinding on continuing education for the upcoming tax season and then yesterday got the news that my aunt Pat (Dr. Patricia O’Malley) had died peacefully in her sleep Saturday morning. My cousins, for reasons best known to themselves, decided to hold her memorial service and interment on Black Friday morning, and I can’t scrape together enough miles, credits, and cash to make it there. (N.B.: I am not asking for money.) So baseball hasn’t been the last thing on my mind, but it’s been a good way down the priority list.
