The headline quote is Professor Glenn Reynolds’ reaction to a post by Jazz Shaw about how “the #MeToo movement abandoned women.”

The thought occurs to me, “Is Jazz Shaw really so naïve as to believe the liberals were arguing in good faith?” And this in turn reminds me of something I once remarked about Conor Friedersdorf, namely that his basic problem seemed to be insufficient cynicism. If your beginning assumption about politics is that everybody actually believes what they say — if you grant them the benefit of the doubt as regards sincerity and their professed ideals — then you are, to paraphrase W.C. Fields, the kind of sucker who should never get an even break. If it weren’t for the ample supply of fools, however, the Democratic Party would have been out of business long ago, and one of the ways that Democrats keep their scam going is by manfacturing “spontaneous grassroots movements” like #OccupyWallStreet, #BlackLivesMatter and, of course, #MeToo.

Hey, does anyone remember “No Nukes”? Back in the 1980s, this allegedly “grassroots” protest movement emerged as a not-very-well-disguised propaganda campaign by Democrats to hype the idea that Ronald Reagan was a dangerous warmonger who was going to provoke World War III and destroy the world in a nuclear Armageddon. To this day, there are still people who haven’t realized how fundamentally bogus the “No Nukes” movement was, because aging celebrities — Jackson Browne, Don Henley, et al. — don’t want to admit that they were 100% wrong about everything (as liberals generally are).

Excuse that trip down Memory Lane, but my point is that if you pay attention long enough, certain patterns become obvious. Democrats are always trying to figure out ways to mobilize and energize their grassroots “base,” and even if one can point to a genuine organic beginning to any particular “progressive” movement, by the time it makes national headlines, the Democrats are already busy exploiting it as a propaganda operation, and thus you can never assume that the arguments of movement activists are made in sincerity. Always suspect a scam.

When did we know that #MeToo was a fraud? As a thoroughgoing cynic, I figured it was a scam all along, but the conclusive proof of its fraudulence came in early 2020, when Tara Reade attracted attention by accusing Joe Biden of sexual assault. The feminist response included this headline from Monica Hesse of the Washington Post:

‘Believe Women’ was a slogan.
‘Believe All Women’ is a strawman.

Six days later, Susan Faludi echoed the message in the New York Times:

‘Believe All Women’
Is a Right-Wing Trap

In other words, #BelieveWomen, unless a woman makes an accusation that could keep Democrats from winning the White House, in which case, the hashtag will be instantly converted to #ThatBitchIsLying.

The same basic rule applies to every “progressive” movement. The raison d’être of such movements is to promote the interests of the Democratic Party, to help elect Democrats and advance their policy agenda. Whatever “cause” or “ideal” or “principle” any progressive movement may claim to hold dear, will be cast aside without hesitation if, in any way, it should become harmful to Democrats, collectively or individually. You think Democrats really care about women? If so, you are a damned fool.

Seeing coverage of Hurricane Idalia on Wednesday, I saw that once it came inland north of Tampa, its path was aimed directly at Valdosta, Georgia, where my friend and podcasting partner Dianna Deeley lives.

“Are you there? Are you underwater?” I said when she answered, but there was no gurgling sound and, despite the breathless hurricane hype on CNN, the damage around Valdosta was not a historical cataclysm. It was windy and rainy and the electricity went out for a while, but the local death toll seems to have been exactly one — somebody got killed when a tree fell on their car. This is a bad thing, but the way TV news was reporting Hurricane Idalia, you might have thought it was going to wipe half the state of Florida and parts of Georgia completely off the map.

Hurricane hype in the media is, of course, politically motivated: Climate change is to blame for this devastation, the audience is told, and because hurricanes generally hit in the Southeastern states — the most Republican part of the country — the TV anchors are almost gleeful at the thought of nature taking its revenge on those ignorant racist Bible-thumping “climate deniers” with their big gas-guzzling trucks.

It’s about the narrative, you see, and the fact that Hurricane Idalia hit Florida, ruled by Evil Right-Wing Gov. Ron DeSantis — well, of course, everybody at CNN wanted the storm to be world-historic in terms of its deadly impact. And alas, their hopes were disappointed:

Two men died on Wednesday morning as Hurricane Idalia struck Florida.
Florida Highway Patrol said both victims were killed in separate car crashes as the powerful storm brought torrential rain and strong wind gusts to Florida.
A 59-year-old Gainesville man was driving in “extremely rainy conditions” on State Road 20 around 6 a.m. when he struck a tree after veering into a ditch near Southeast 60th Terrace, FHP told ABC affiliate WCJR-TV, The Orlando Sentinel and Fox affiliate WOFL-TV.
A 40-year-old man was killed about 15 minutes later on St. Joe Road in Pasco County when he drove his Ford Ranger “too fast for conditions,” lost control and also struck a tree, the agency told WOFL-TV, NBC News and The Sentinel.

Two people — exactly two — killed in Florida. Not quite the kind of UNPRECEDENTED DEADLY DEVASTATION the media had been eagerly awaiting. Better luck next time, guys.

Because I was busy at the day job this afternoon, I wasn’t paying attention to football and, quite frankly, it had slipped my mind today was the deadline for final pre-season roster cuts in the NFL, when all teams have to get down to the 53-player limit. When I finally remembered to check, I was stunned: The New England Patriots waived both their backup quarterbacks, leaving Mac Jones as the only QB on the roster.

Every Patriots fan — and no doubt a majority of sports writers covering the NFL — had the same thought: “What the hell is Bill Belichick doing?”

As a rookie last year, Zappe stepped in after both Jones and veteran backup Bryan Hoyer were injured, and did so well that many fans in New England wanted him to keep the starting job. “Zappe! Zappe!” was the chant heard in Gillette Stadium any time Mac Jones appeared to be struggling later in the season. So how could it be possible that Belichick was ready to ditch the 2022 fourth-round pick? As for Cunningham, he was an undrafted free agent whom the Patriots hoped to convert to a wide receiver, but generated lots of excitement during a brief preseason appearance at QB, when he ran for a TD against the Houston Texans.

Surely, there must be some kind of plan? Another one of those genius four-dimensional chess moves by the Greatest Football Coach Ever, right? I mean, right? We’ll see. The problem is that the Patriots are keeping six wide receivers on the roster, and have also beefed up their reserves on the offensive line. In order to get down to 53 players, they had to do something, and the thinking seems to be that (a) other teams have had to make similarly difficult choices, (b) maybe no other team in the league really needs a backup QB at this points, so therefore perhaps (c) neither Zappe nor Cunningham will be claimed off waivers by any other team, however (d) it’s unlikely both Zappe and Cunningham will get claimed off waivers, in which case (e) at least one of them will be able to return to the Patriots on the practice squad, besides which (f) there’s almost certainly some other veteran backup QB available that New England could grab, if worse comes to worse.

That’s my analysis, anyway. The Patriots recently traded for two offensive tackles. Between now and the Sept. 10 season-opener, it’s likely New England will cut at least one more offensive lineman, thus opening a slot on the 53-man roster for whoever it is Belichick uses as the backup quarterback. But that’s as much four-dimensional chess as I can glean out of it, and I think most of the sports writers and TV commentators don’t have any better insight than I do. Bill Belichick is to football coaching what Oppenheimer was to nuclear weapons.
