Debbie Wasserman-Schultz Cites Virginia Ultrasound Law in Fundraising E-Mail

The chairwoman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee cites an “atrocious” new Virginia law requiring ultrasounds prior to abortions as an attack on “women’s rights” in a fundraising e-mail sent to Democratic donors today.

“There are still 450 other bills on birth control and abortion in state legislatures across the country,” Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Florida) wrote in the e-mail (full text below). “With a far-right faction of the GOP holding a majority in many of them, it’s unclear how many we can stop. But let me just say this: We need to be prepared to win in November. As long as women’s rights are being attacked, we’re going to keep fighting back — in Congress and in the states.”

The e-mail from Wasserman-Schultz also refers to Texas, which she says has “already eliminated two-thirds of their funding for women’s health, closing more than half of the state’s Planned Parenthood and other clinics,” saying that this “is denying hundreds of thousands of women access to basic health care.” Continue reading Debbie Wasserman-Schultz Cites Virginia Ultrasound Law in Fundraising E-Mail →

NARAL Is Orgasmic That Women Can Get Birth Control Without A Copay. Drugs They May, You Know, Need? No’ So Much

by Smitty

First of all, my wife’s name is not Jane Smith. But Mrs. The Other Smitty heard this ad and was genuinely offended. The text:

Jane Smith! Your prescription’s ready for pick-up at the pharmacy counter!
Thank you! That was fast. How much do I owe?
No charge. This is covered without a co-pay now.
Then a narrator says: “Thanks to President Obama, the 99 percent of American women who use birth control could now hear this same message. You see, we scored an important victory when the President stood up for our health care, and guaranteed insurance coverage of birth control at no cost. He’s making sure women of all faiths, no matter where they work, can get contraceptive coverage. But extremists in Congress are trying to change the policy by making it harder for women to get birth control with no co-pay. Call Congress at 202-225-3121 and tell them to stand with President Obama and not between a woman and her birth control.”

Scored a victory? As my wife points out, birth control is a lifestyle drug–not, for example, a chemotherapy drug. We can save the analysis for why birth control is so important for National Offend a Feminist Week. Maybe the woman is a troglodyte in Wisconsin, where the sperm sort of roam the bog (they say). Birth control could, hypothetically, be an important tool for minimizing trog reproduction.

The real objection here is the Lefty distortion of what is important, and the dishonest claim to have helped, when, overall, the Left exacerbates problems. When, ever has government queering a market helped matters? Rarely if ever, according to Sowell.

Update: via House of Eratosthenes, Senator Blunt is trying to redistribute power to employers, and the White House is having none of it. The Postmodern Left is all about redistributing money; power, no’ so much.

Obama’s Contraceptive Disinformation

Some readers may wonder why I haven’t published anything about the battle over mandatory contraceptive coverage under ObamaCare. Basically, it’s because every time I try to do it, I tend to write a couple of thousand words before discarding the draft.

However, yesterday I was CC’d on an e-mail that some crazy woman sent to multiple recipients at National Review. Given that I’ve never had anything to do with National Review, my inclusion on the CC list was somewhat mysterious, but the entirety of the crazy woman’s message was in the subject line:

Good to know that you agree that Muslim employers can impose Shari’a restrictions on their employees, dumbass

Crazy, right? No one who actually understands the issue would make such a comparison. This issue isn’t about employers imposing anything on anybody. It’s about whether the federal government can mandate certain types of insurance coverage for private employers, even to the point of requiring Catholic organizations to pay for insurance that includes full coverage — no deductible, no co-pay — for contraception, sterilization and abortifacient “morning after” drugs.

In this battle, the defense of Catholic organizations is actually a libertarian position, and the only people who could possibly take the side of the Obama administration are . . . well, crazy people, or perhaps well-meaning people who have been deliberately misinformed about the issue.

Believe it or not, a CBS News poll claims that 61 percent of self-described Catholics support the Obama administration, and that the crazy, ignorant and misinformed are an actual majority of Americans. A few headlines:

Reid to Allow Vote on Rescinding
Contraception Rule

— National Journal

Birth Control Amendment ‘Dangerous,’
Obama Spokesman Says

— Huffington Post

Palin on contraception flap:
“An un-American act”

— Real Clear Politics

Can we at least admit that there is an important difference between (a) not covering something on a health insurance policy, and (b) “denying” something or “imposing” something? And are people too stupid to understand that having government mandate certain types of coverage represents a gigantic intrusion into the insurance marketplace?

But if I let myself get worked up about this, I’ll spend a couple of hours on it and end up with another unpublished 2,000-word draft, so I’ll just quit now.

Ron Paul Campaign Flyer Emphasizes Opposition to Gay Marriage, Abortion

HOLLIS, N.H.
Ron Paul has won many converts in New Hampshire with his libertarian-influenced anti-war message, but a flyer circulated by the Texas congressman’s campaign here emphasizes Paul’s Christian faith, pro-life position and opposition to same-sex marriage.

“I believe marriage is between one man and one woman,” the flyer quotes Paul as saying, expressing his support for the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that would “ensure that no state would be forced to recognize a ‘same sex’ marriage license issued in another state.” The flyer also reminds voters that Paul “was an original co-sponsor of the Marriage Protection Act, HR 3313, that removes challenges to [DOMA] from federal courts’ jurisdiction.”

The Paul flyer (full image below) describes him as having “worked tirelessly to defend and restore” pro-life protections: “The right of an innocent, unborn child to life is at the heart of the American ideal of liberty.” Evidently aimed at wooing social conservative support for the congressman’s campaign, the flyer also includes these quotes from Paul:

  • “I have accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior, and I endeavor every day to follow Him in all I do and in every position I advocate.”
  • “We must recognize that true national defense means defending our own borders and coastlines. … Borders should be the number one national priority, plain and simple.”

You can click on the image below to see it full-size:

UPDATE: What struck me about this flyer is that so many of Paul’s young supporters I’ve spoken with are in favor of gay marriage and they seem to assume that Paul is as well. Yet the Paul campaign is distributing this flyer to emphasize the candidate’s social conservatism. Meanwhile, another candidate has a slightly different problem here:

Santorum Attacked in Iowa With Same Smear Used Earlier Against Gingrich

Steve Ertelt of Life News reports:

For the second time, people opposed to one of the Republican presidential candidates have misappropriated the name of a prominent Iowa pro-life organization attack the candidate in the state that holds the fist caucus tomorrow.
In December someone used the name of Iowans for Life on fliers distributed at events in the Hawkeye State to attack pro-life former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with claims that he is not prolife on abortion.
Now, Iowans for Life’s name has been falsely attached to fliers disparaging pro-life former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum — who has cruised to a third place standing in the state that leads off the campaign to replace pro-abortion President Barack Obama.
“Iowans for Life has once again been subject to fraudulent use of its name for the purpose of negative rhetoric targeting a candidate in the presidential campaign,” the group told LifeNews on Sunday. “This second deceitful usurping of Iowans for Life’s name was aimed at Senator Rick Santorum.”

First Newt, now Santorum? I suspect the Perry campaign was responsible for both of these cheap smears. As I remarked Saturday, if desperation was a cologne fragance, they’d reek of it.

Born That Way: The Strange Sisterhood Of Meggie Mac And San Fran Nan

— by Wombat-socho

Young Miss McCain is in the news again, pouting that Newt isn’t taking her seriously. This is just common sense on the former speaker’s part. No Republican, much less conservative, with two functional brain cells regards the daughter of Stacy’s Crazy Cousin John as anything but an object for derision and mockery. Like other wannabe pundits in her age group, she expects to be treated as a respected pundit despite a track record of behavior that doesn’t qualify one as Republican, much less conservative. And why this expectation? Because she is, after all, the daughter of a Senator prominent in the GOP, one who was recently nominated as its presidential candidate.

Never mind that the father has spent decades teaching his daughter by example by sticking his thumb in the eye of conservatives; never mind that Miss McCain has produced no works showing evidence of coherent thought or cognition. She demands respect; she is Republican by birth and theoretically prominent in the younger element of the GOP. One wonders whether she’d actually be welcome among real live Young Republicans or the Young Americans for Freedom.

Turning now to the former Speaker of the House and supposed Catholic Nancy Pelosi, who lately insisted that Republicans were determined to see women dead on the floors of doctors’ offices on account of their opposition to Federal abortion funding, I see in the news that Pelosi has been called out on the obvious conflicts between her religion and her political actions. Pelosi claims to be a Catholic, and one of the notable policies of that religion is a staunch opposition to abortion. This is not some muddled policy paper produced by lay staffers and signed by fuddled bishops, but a declaration from Pope after Pope from the Chair of Peter. It is no more debatable than the divinity of Christ or transubstantiation. For the ex-Speaker to opine that “Catholics of good conscience can disagree with the Church’s position on abortion” is not only wrong, but given her position, actively damaging to the Church since she is in a position of public influence and highly visible. Pelosi was born Catholic, and seems to follow the rituals by habit, but in practice she is no more Catholic than Meggie Mac is actually Republican.

Neither Catholicism nor Republicanism are ethnic groups or tribes. You can’t simply be born into them. There are basic doctrines that must be conformed to if you want to be taken seriously. If you don’t, you confuse people about what the Church or the GOP stand for, and those of us who are serious about our politics and our faith are obliged to oppose you. In the case of Nancy Pelosi, it’s incumbent on both the hierarchy and lay members of the Church to call her out on her wishful thinking; it the case of Meggie Mac, it is incumbent on all right-thinking Republicans and conservatives to mock, deride, taunt and ridicule the young airhead until the stops being such a public spectacle and somehow finds a clue. Or, as Tammy Bruce suggests:

Meet the man Planned Parenthood fears. Ryan Bomberger wants more black parents to choose life over abortion, and believes that abortion is hitting epidemic levels in black communities. Is Planned Parenthood racist? Find out.

Abortion is possibly the oldest Lefty evil. Thank St. Albert of Gore for the internet, where we can spread the positive news of men like Bomberger. Two cases of abortion of which I have some passing familiarity were not without effect. God have mercy on the abortion industry and lead all those involved to repentance.

As Americans like Bomberger and Rachel stray from the Progressive reservation, tools like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton appear increasingly cheesy.
