Ladd Ehlinger’s Four Letter Review Of Atlas Shrugged: Crap

by Smitty

Let me first say I preferred reading “The Fountainhead”. Second, my standard review of everything: “It would have been twice as good if it was half as long” definitely applied to “Atlas Shrugged”. Rand’s critique of Socialism is effective, her approach to sexuality bizarre, and her atheism a total yawn. Thirdly, I’m not going to catch this or any sequel soon. Still haven’t seen Lord of the Rings, for that matter.
That said, Ehlinger offers a thorough, serious review of the movie.

Look, before I go on, let me make things perfectly clear. It would be great for me if “Atlas Shrugged: Part 1” was a good movie and went like gangbusters. It would be great for me to honestly say, “Wow! What a work of art!” and the film gets them into the theaters in droves. Then I wouldn’t look like I was sour-graping the thing.

Also, an “Atlas Shrugged” success might entice some of those damned goofy libertarian-objectivist-conservatives like the Koch Brothers to get off their asses and invest in movies that celebrate freedom, which are the kind of movies I want to do. Instead they spend their time throwing their money away by donating (yeah. Donating. WTF? Are they libertarian-conservative-objectivists or not? Shouldn’t they f’ing INVEST? Why not bust out some koom-bah-yah and granola while you’re at it, guys?) to political action committees and smarmy politicians. This does nothing to change the pop culture, which is where freedom is losing — worse than big time. We need more guys like the one who invested in this movie (only with better taste in directors).

Instead, all of our freedoms are being eroded away because of our current pop-culture. John Stewart and Stephen Colbert are doing more to destroy freedom than Obama ever could, and no amount of donating to think-tanks and goofy PACs is going to save things.

And hell, I’d love to do “The Fountainhead” right now. The first movie version, in black and white, was a piece of crap. Of course, the book was crap, but that’s the point – a great filmmaker takes the material at hand and turns it into great art. Welles adapted a crummy potboiler into Touch of Evil and Alfred Hitchcock turned something forgettable into Vertigo.

More than that, it would be great to see a good film for my eleven bucks. Give me another Vertigo. Give me another Wild Bunch. This movie is supposed to be all about success, competence, greatness. Right? Where the hell is all of that achievement in the film as a film? Nowhere, because…

Unfortunately, we don’t have a John Galt directing this film.

Read the whole review. Also, while you’re in his ‘hood, subscribe to his blog.
From what I’ve read of the reviews, let me pontificate on one of Ehlinger’s earlier points:

Rand was a great political philosopher. She was just a crappy fiction writer. Her ideas were great; even her plot “hooks” were great (the producers of society go on strike when collectivists take over; the world’s greatest architect blows up a building that he designed when collectivists ruin his vision). But she couldn’t get that into any interesting form.

And form is king.

Since I’ve read some Rand, here is my take: she was reacting to Socialism in general, and the Soviet Union in particular. However, that was a negative thing: her ideas mainly existed in opposition to those derived from Marx.
What she said in a positive sense, “the human mind is the pinnacle”, doesn’t make it past the first Alzheimer’s patient, as far as I can tell. A great piece of creation, the mind, but fragile and finite and looking silly when taken beyond proper context, as Rand’s philosophy would seem to require. And then her (can I call it “elemental”?) approach to sexuality merges with this to form a distorted view of the human condition.
So no wonder her ideas don’t enjoy tremendous traction outside of her books.
On the topic of film adaptations of books, let me key on Ehlinger’s point concerning form: a book is not a film, and vice versa. They are almost completely different media. Anyone saying “I read the book, and the film sucked” has already failed, if I am their audience. A film adaptation is a related work at best.
If anything, it sounds like the Atlas Shrugged creative team was too slavish to the book. The basic story could probably have been told in 90 minutes. There would have been howls from purists, who wanted line-for-line fidelity with Rand. Those weenies should be told to get themselves a camcorder and shoot the book straight to YouTube, for all 243 people so bereft of existence as to find that necessary.

For a more positive review, see Ed Morrissey. One of my philosophies is that, if you’re going to watch a film, you have to allow yourself to be entertained. It’s 90 minutes of your life you won’t get back. Sufficient unto the flick is the crappiness thereof, to paraphrase the Sage.

How Ladd Ehlinger Went Viral And Flu Around The World

by Smitty

Never mind my sorry pun fetish, read Ladd’s play-by-play in full. A wee cough:

In space, no one can hear you scream. On youTube, no one HAS to watch your video and no one WILL unless you do something interesting.
If, on the other hand, you’re an obscure politician in Alabama running for an obscure office like Agriculture Commissioner, and you make a campaign ad that got 500k views in the same amount of time as Romney’s 93k, (and is now up to 2.3 million), and you didn’t spend a red cent on online advertising…

… well then, you did make a viral video.
I suppose the main take-away is this: in order to be classified as viral, a video must grab “lots” of views, and “lots” means “more than others in its genre.” It’s all about in comparison to. I mean really, who gives a flip in Canada about the Alabama Agriculture Commissioner? Nobody. Yet it was Number 1 Most Viewed in Canada. Belgium and Italy, too. Yes, I said Belgium.

Not only do you get a director’s insight, you get to watch him throw a Mitt Romney clip under the bus, then offer five sound points for getting it done.

I, for one, look forward to his MRSA-less onslaught next year. Wait, Stacy: put the pipe wrench down!

U.S. Policy On Libya Explained: It Was All An Esoteric Steven Wright Reference

by Smitty

Looking at Gateway Pundit’s latest post on Libya, enlightenment struck: the whole apparent disaster is merely a reference to I Have A Pony.
Hoft: “Obama Yesterday: Gaddafi Must Go… Obama Today: Gaddafi Can Stay (Video)”
Now, quoting Wright from memory:

I have a dog named Stay. When he was a puppy, I’d say “Come here, Stay. Come here, Stay. And he’d look at me like (?). Now he just ignores me. . .and keeps typing. He’s an East German Shepherd. Very, very disciplined.”

You may all thank me for clearing that up by linking.

Da Tech Guy, as he so frequently does, captures the take from The Morning Joke. Or whatever that MSNBC thing is called.
Maybe the President is a student of Teddy Wayne’s Unpopular Proverbs.
The Lonely Conservative recalls a 2007 Bidenism on Iran that is amusing in the Libya context.
SWAC Girl:

Americans are confused. Why go into Libya as opposed to, say, Egypt or any of the other hot spots around the world? They are waiting for answers as this president continues his silence and American war planes go where they’re directed by this commander-in-chief.

FilmLadd goes full-on noir in his analysis:

No matter what mindless jingoists would have you believe, there is no such thing as a country so great and powerful that it can not be destroyed by incompetently waged war. Not even the United States. It may not be this one or the next, but like an infinite monkey with an infinite typewriter, eventually it will happen.

Dale Peterson’s PAC

by Smitty

This blog’s admiration of Ladd Ehlinger can only be described as shameless. Ladd came to national attention by elevating a minor Alabama race to viral YouTube stardom:
Now Dale Peterson has a PAC, translating his serious-as-lung-cancer earnest into yet another voice for American recovery:

America is at a crossroads. Criminals and thugs have run our country into the ground with massive debt, high taxes, over-regulation, and suppression of our constitutional rights. So I ask you, can America get up? I believe so. I know so. Join me and thousands of other Americans waking up to the cold fact that our country is calling us to civic service. We will be great again!

Go, Dale!

Ladd Ehlinger: The Wisdom Of Niccolo In 1/10th The Space

by Smitty

To paraphrase George S. Patton, “No bastard ever won an election by dying for his platform. He won the election by making some other poor dumb bastard die for his platform.”
Starting from a picture of George C. Scott as Blood-n-Guts, Ehlinger calls his 10 point essay ‘The Prince: Advice For Citizen Candidates‘. Ladd, of course, is the rebel auteur whose viral videos punched far above their weight in the 20082010 [thanks, Ladd] election cycle. By ‘Citizen Candidates’ he may not be including the Ruling Class Overlord types who would, say, hire foreigners over Americans.

A taste:

1. It’s a Marketing Campaign, Stupid

Just because the common nomenclature is “political campaign,” it doesn’t change the fact that you are embarking on a short-term marketing campaign.

Your stand on the issues matter little if no one knows who you are. Obviously, you can use your stand on the issues to help increase name recognition. But this is only one small component of the big picture. You are running a marketing campaign so people will investigate your stand on the issues. Don’t put the cart before the horse.

If you’re a newbie candidate, your name recognition is the first and primary obstacle you must overcome.

That means hiring a marketing team. That means videos. That means social media. That means pulling out all the stops. Everything must be geared to taking this hill.

Special tip: Going to public functions and shaking hands is good for local races, but when you have to reach out to 100,000 or more people, that’s a secondary priority to mass media.

2. Polling Is For Morons

You’re a newbie candidate. No one knows who you are, so your standing in the polls will of course be pathetic. If you’re going to run, run to change the polls. Don’t run based on what polls say. Don’t change your views based on what polls say. Figure out how to market your views. Your job is to change the polls in your favor. Period.

And never, ever wait to do something because you’re “waiting on your polling data to come back” (see next).

Read, and heed, the whole thing.

Note To Tim Pawlenty: Ladd Ehlinger

by Smitty

SOL/Puffington Host
reports that Governor Pawlenty has retained some Canuck named Baiano to improve the cut of his jib:

Lucas Baiano, a 23-year-old former Hillary Clinton supporter, is Canadian-born and dresses in perfectly-starched white shirts, slim-fitting sports jackets and tight designer jeans.

His job is to make Pawlenty appear larger than life. And he’s good at it.

I don’t know what unplugged knob of a consultant argued for that call, but how did you overlook His Laddness, the Laddage, the Guy With The Ladd Attitude?

This is not the time for ‘Minnesota Nice’, Governor. The country is on the ropes. Full tilt boogie, sir.

Update: Now, I guess you can logically assert that ‘full tilt boogie’ might imply playing the Dale Peterson card. But it need not necessarily do that. Without resorting to a firearm, for example, Tim Pawlenty could be dressed in hockey gear and doing a high-speed slalom down the ice with a puck through a forest of teleprompters. Quotations from any Barely Honest Onager that comes to mind could be scrolling up the prompters as Pawlenty maneuvers. After navigating them, Pawlenty faces a lone goalie. Pawlenty does a sliding, lunging shot on goal and scores.
He gets up and collects himself, and skates over to the goalie. The goalie removes his mask, revealing Wayne Gretzky.
Gretzky: “Yeah, that was OK, but stick to politics.”

I Didn’t Rape Tommy Christopher

You wouldn’t know that, given the way he has obsessively hounded me over a single blog post I wrote in December when Julian Assange was arrested. Recognizing that my attempts to clarify were a violation of the First Law of Holes, I posted my mea culpa, dropped the subject and moved on, but Tommy remains fixated. He even brought his Mediaite camera into the smoking area at CPAC to do an “ambush” interview:

[3:15] “I believe in ‘Thou shalt not’ . . . Wait a minute: I don’t believe in heavy petting before marriage, so how the hell can I be accused of being pro-rape? . . . I was angry at Jill Filpovic for taking the occasion of the accusations against Julian Assange to lecture us, as if we needed to be lectured, about ‘no means no’ and ‘stop means stop.'”

Among the personalities in this video, you’ll notice my filmmaker buddy Ladd Ehlinger Jr., as well as Angel Fleming of Fleming and Hayes, whose colleague Shane Hayes walks into the video toward the end.

I’m reposting this video as evidence that Tommy Christopher is weirdly obsessed with me. Consider the vast and absurd disproportion: I’m a freelance journalist and blogger, whereas Tommy is political editor and White House correspondent for Mediaite. This means that Tommy is being paid a full-time salary to pursue his bizarre Javert-like vendetta against a “popular conservative blogger,” as he describes me.

Frankly, I think it’s the “popular” part that bugs him most, but at any rate, there’s no way on earth I could be viewed as an appropriate subject for the kind of scrutiny involved in this video, or in Tommy’s previous blogging about me. It is not false modesty to say that covering the “Stacy McCain beat” is below Tommy’s pay-grade.

Notice also how Tommy pompously declares at Mediaite, “As you can see from this clip, McCain still holds many opinions that I find objectionable” — which is rather transparently his main point: The unimpeachable righteousness of Tommy Christopher.

Such preening moral narcissism, the pharasaical desire to strut one’s superior virtue like a peacock flaunting his tail, is the inescapable essence of liberalism. But you don’t need me to tell you that, when Thomas Sowell has written an entire book about it: The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy.

One might describe the liberal’s typical pose as, “I have noble sentiments and virtuous opinions — admire me!” This is why they constantly accuse others of harboring malign motives (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.) and why nothing so outrages a liberal as when you deny them the admiration they so desperately crave.

If you’ve ever gotten into an argument with a liberal, you recognize this holier-than-thou game for what it is. One minute you’re arguing about a specific incident (in this case, the charges against Julian Assange) and then next thing you know, the liberal starts lecturing you as if you were a third-grader, demanding that you accede to whatever point he’s pushing. He throws out a hypothetical case or employs some inapt analogy that he thinks will prove him right, and if you call him on that, he’ll take the argument off in some other direction. This is when you realize that the supposed subject of the argument is merely a pretext, and that the real point he’s trying to prove is actually quite simple: “I’m better than you.”

Certainly, no liberal should ever imagine that he’s going to win an argument by trying to make my inferiority the point of contention.

OK, fine: Let us stipulate that you are in some sense a better person than one particular skinny redneck. Exactly what have you proven by that kind of argument, except that you think you can build yourself up by tearing other people down? At the end of the day, the facts of the case are not changed by your mere opinion, and you’re still an obnoxious domineering know-it-all who can’t stand to see other people happy.

VIDEO: Do the Barney Shuffle!

It’s the dance sensation that’s sweeping the nation!

The New York Times did a feature on Ladd Ehlinger Jr. (“a periwinkle gray T-shirt the color of his eyes”? Dude, I told you that chick was hot for you) recognition that is way overdue, as it’s been nearly a year since I declared: “Clearly, this man is destined for greatness.”

Also, I think somebody’s building him a freakin’ robot.

SEAN BIELAT for CONGRESS
Help Him Beat Barney Frank, and Then
Maybe Bristol Palin Will Teach Him to Dance

UPDATE: Da Tech Guy has behind-the-scenes video clips where you can hear Ladd laughing himself silly over the dancer Kira’s brilliant moves. Ace was also on the scene for the shoot, and a big thank-you to Andy at AOSHQ and to John LaRosa for making the Ladd/Bielat connection happen.
