Neal Rauhauser Again? Yet Another Conspiracy Theory Smear Emerges

Neal Rauhauser was a speaker at the 2010 Netroots Nation conference

When last we encountered Neal Rauhauser, the “TwitterGate” instigator and Brett Kimberlin associate was e-mailing false and defamatory claims about Brandon Darby to public officials, including law enforcement agencies and members of Congress.

There was a remarkable resemblance between Rauhauser’s crazytalk smear of Darby and the “Breitbart ISR” conspiracy theory that Rauhauser published in February. Anyone can examine and compare the style and content of those documents.

Now, in an anonymous 1,000-word document published on Pastebin (which we can expect soon to be deleted, as has been Rauhauser’s habit whenever his vicious online activities are exposed), Rauhauser has evidently promulgated a new smear, accusing Patterico of exploiting the mentally ill for nefarious purposes:

Pity poor John Patrick Frey aka @Patterio, owner of http://patterico.com
His despicable practice of identifying vulnerable adults and using them to do his dirty work has finally backfired on him in a truly impressive fashion.
Seth Allen, a troll who long carried water for Frey, is now deemed to be a “libelous cretin”. Less than a year ago he was begging Frey for enough money to appear for a damages hearing due for a civil suit he faced over a conflict that Frey and Islamophobic hate talker Aaron Walker had stage managed, with Allen as the fall guy. Allen’s specific defect appears to be schizotypal:
“Schizotypal personality disorder is a personality disorder characterized by a need for social isolation, anxiety in social situations, odd behavior and thinking, and often unconventional beliefs.”
Allen is on psych disability.

Mike Stack, a troll with a history of frequenting porn blogs, was left holding the bag for operations aimed at former Congressman Anthony Weiner in response to his reporting an extortion attempt by Congressman Michael Grimm, who represented NY-13 at the time. Stack was outed, publicly humiliated, trolled long and hard by Democratic Underground, and finally swatted by Brandon Darby in an effort to silence him.
[Further material deleted at request of Mike Stack — RSM]

Ron Brynaert, a former journalist who worked with Megan Carpentier and Mike Rogers at Raw Story, faced a framing attempt by Frey, in which he paid for an audio forensics expert to attempt to shift the blame from Brandon Darby. Brynaert lost his job in the summer or fall of 2010 due to the onset of an inability to control his behavior coupled with a drastic reduction in his investigative abilities, per multiple conversations involving Carpentier and Rogers, which others have overheard.
“The acts of those who have OCD may appear paranoid and potentially psychotic. However, OCD sufferers generally recognize their obsessions and compulsions as irrational, and may become further distressed by this realization.”
Brynaert is on psych disability.

“Michele Lessick” aka @ZAPEM, a troll who publishes enormous conspiracy theories, has been fed information by Frey in order to lead her into attacking targets he selects. Sooner or later she turns on anyone foolish enough to work for her and this happened for Frey in early summer of 2012.
[Further material deleted at request of Mike Stack. — RSM}

Aaron Walker, an Islamophobic troll who formerly operated http://everyonedrawmohammed.blogspot.com, has appeared more as a collaborator than a victim, but Frey uses him in a similar fashion, leading him into harm’s way and trusting that his delusions and obsessions will do the rest. Walker long attempted to provoke reactions from Muslims in America, he has made statements in court to the effect that he fears something called “The Kookpocalypse”, and he has attempted to involve himself in the Swatgate conspiracy theory.
“In cases where reporters of stalking behavior have been judged to be making false reports, a majority of them were judged (by the same people) to be delusional.”
There are no recent screen shots of Frey interacting with or discussing Walker.
Aaron Walker is not on psych disability yet, but his hate speech coupled with his poor courtroom demeanor will cost him his career as a lawyer.

Where is Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley when Frey, who is a Deputy D.A., is engaged in this pattern of finding and manipulating vulnerable adults? Cooley is not up for election and has endorsed Democrat Jackie Lacey against Republican Alan Jackson. There have been multiple internal investigations of Frey, but nothing has stuck yet.
Where is California Attorney General Kamala Harris? If Cooley is unable to touch this problem for some reason it would seem natural that Harris is the next stop.
Where is Washington D.C. U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen? There is a grand jury evaluating election fraud on the part of James O’Keefe and Frey has attempted to obstruct the investigation by intimidating a key witness, Nadia Naffe. Frey used the Scribd account of his wife, Deputy District Attorney Christi Frey, dumping medical records that reveal she, too, is a vulnerable adult.
Where is Eastern District of New York U.S. Attorney Loretta E. Lynch? There is a grand jury evaluating a racketeering case against Congressman Michael Grimm, and the swatting of Mike Stack is clearly part of a payback scheme that Grimm aimed at former Congressman Anthony Weiner. While executed by Brandon Darby and Lee Stranahan, Frey had knowledge of this extremely dangerous stunt after the fact and did nothing to bring justice to the perpetrators.
The particulars of the story change with each event, but Frey’s modus operandi is quite clear – find someone who is either on psych disability or who could easily qualify if their stable living/working situation were disrupted. Learn their specific weakness, manipulate them into a conflict, and stage managing them via a cutout persona that disappears once Frey’s objectives are met.
Frey’s behavior is either that of an extreme ideologue, willing to destroy the lives of anyone he can lure into his schemes, or he is an outright sociopath/psychopath.
If the Washington D.C. grand jury or Staten Island grand jury don’t put a stop to Frey’s dangerous, unethical, illegal conduct, either Jackie Lacey or Alan Jackson will have to deal with him after one of them is elected as the Los Angeles County District Attorney.
Have a good day, Deputy District Attorney John Patrick Frey.

Brett Kimberlin Will Have to Answer Questions Under Penalty of Perjury

As a definition of “more fun than a barrel of monkeys,” I think that will do, don’t you? Aaron Walker’s attorney Dan Backer has served interrogatories in Walker’s lawsuit against Kimberlin, Neal Rauhauser and Ron Brynaert:

Kimberlin has been served with discovery and has twenty-one days in which to comply.
And we won’t be revealing what we served on him just yet, but I have seen it. I chuckled at the sight of it. He’s going to hate every minute of this. He has plainly screwed with the wrong people.

Did I mention that Kimberlin is a convicted perjurer and so profoundly dishonest he can’t tell the truth to save his life? Did I mention that Walker is suing Kimberlin in Virginia, where the courts are unlikely to be sympathetic to a convicted terrorist like Kimberlin? Did I mention that both Rauhauser and Brynaert have failed to respond to Walker’s suit, so that Walker’s attorney is now moving for default judgments against them? There are just the Neutral Objective Facts, and it is also a Neutral Objective Fact that you can click here to contribute to help the Blogger Defense Team support Walker’s case against Kimberlin.

EXCLUSIVE: Kimberlin Associate Neal Rauhauser Accuses Brandon Darby of Fake SWAT Calls, ‘Obstruction of Justice’

A Democrat political consultant with ties to convicted terrorist Brett Kimberlin has accused Breitbart.com contributor Brandon Darby of making fake SWAT calls against conservative bloggers.

In a thousand-word document sent to government officials, Kimberlin associate Neal Rauhauser accuses Darby of conspiring with a number of others — including employees of Republican consulting firm Hynes Communications — in an elaborate criminal scheme involving illegal so-called “SWATting” incidents aimed at four conservative bloggers: Mike Stack, Patrick “Patterico” Frey, Erick Erickson of Red State and Aaron Walker. The document (see full text below) describes Rauhauser’s accusations that the SWATting calls are “tied to an extortion attempt by Mike Grimm, Congressman from NY-13, an obstruction of justice attempt intended to deflect attention from James O’Keefe, and the whole thing is being wrapped up by Hynes Communications in an attempt to create another ‘Bill Ayers’ for the 2012 election.”

Furthermore, Rauhauser forwarded to an associate of Darby copies of e-mails he sent to a Republican member of Congress. In the e-mails he sent to the office of Rep. Sandy Adams (R-Fla.) in June and July, Rauhauser charges that Darby and others were engaged in a “conspiracy to obstruct justice.” The full text of those e-mails is also appended below.

Darby has previously said he intends to sue Rauhauser, and called the accusations “absurd,” and said that Rauhauser sent these materials to a woman named in a Townhall magazine article Darby recently published. Darby said in a brief phone interview that shows Rauhauser’s attempts to “social engineer” people through defamatory communications.

Rauhauser’s accusations against Frey, a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney, are part of a pattern dating back to July 2011. Frey had written about the sex scandal that resulted in Democrat Rep. Anthony Weiner’s resignation from Congress. Rauhauser was obsessed with that scandal, and wrote a series of post at the liberal Daily Kos blog accusing Frey of being the mastermind of an elaborate conspiracy against Weiner.

Frey has written that he suspects Rauhauser, along with Kimberlin and former Raw Story editor Ron Brynaert, of complicity in the SWATing call made against Frey in July 2011. Frey says that a voice analysis expert has identified Brynaert as having made the false call that sent armed officers to Frey’s house.

Congresswoman Adams is one of 87 members of Congress, along with Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, who have urged the Justice Department to investigate the use of “SWATting” and other illegal harassment against political bloggers.

Kimberlin was convicted in 1981 of a weeklong bombing spree that terrorized an Indiana town and sentenced to 50 years in prison. After his release from federal prison in 2001, Kimberlin helped co-found two tax-exempt progressive non-profit groups, the Justice Through Music Project and the Velvet Revolution. Kimberlin has pursued legal charges against bloggers who wrote about his criminal past, accusing them of “harassment.” Rauhauser has worked as a political consultant for a number of Democratic candidates. Rauhauser has described Kimberlin as his “client” and has accompanied Kimberlin to numerous courtroom hearings.

Brandon Darby Swatting Calls
There are four false police reports I find particularly interesting, because they seem to be tied to an extortion attempt by Mike Grimm, Congressman from NY-13, an obstruction of justice attempt intended to deflect attention from James O’Keefe, and the whole thing is being wrapped up by Hynes Communications in an attempt to create another “Bill Ayers” for the 2012 election.

Mike Stack – Montgomery Township, June 23rd 2011:
Stack was used to push the message that a New York Democrat was going to have a sex scandal starting around the beginning of May 2011 and he was left holding the bag for what happened to Anthony Weiner. He was a liability after Weiner’s June 16th resignation, particularly since the news came out June 18th that the “teen girls” Weiner had been talking to were entirely fabricated. The false report seems calculated to shut him up.
A false report was made and the voice of the source seems to be Brandon Darby. This YouTube video is a composite of three false report calls and interview audio of Darby.
[EMBEDDED YOUTUBE VIDEO]
The underlying motivation for the Weiner stalk/smear is his reporting of Grimm’s extortion attempt in the fall of 2010.

John Patrick Frey – Los Angeles, June 30th/July 1st 2011:
Frey engaged former Raw Story editor Ron Brynaert in a call that straddled the midnight hour June 30/July 1. During this time there was an alleged false report made on him, again the voice is Brandon Darby. Frey banned Lee Stranahan from his blog, patterico.com, within about 36 hours. It should be noted that Darby and Stranahan own http://darbystranahan.com. Frey has been a vocal defender of James O’Keefe.
The best source for picking this apart is Lane Lipton aka @qritiq. She’s dug deeper into the details of the event’s timeline, Frey’s shifting, implausible explanations, and his use of an audio forensics expert to try to pin it all on Brynaert.
My read is that Darby and Stranahan did this on their own initiative, Frey was furious about it, but that he realized he was in deep and attempted to help with the cleanup by shifting the blame to Brynaert. Ron can’t make a false report call to save his life – he had a mental breakdown in the fall of 2010 and is incapable of remaining lucid during phone calls – I spoke to him once, and it was 30 seconds of me trying to answer questions and five minutes of him yelling at me.

Erick Erickson – somewhere in Georgia, May 27th 2012:
Erickson wrote about swatting, motivated by a conflict between Brett Kimberlin and Robert Stacy McCain. He also happened to contact his local sheriff’s department and warn them that such a thing was likely. A false report call, again the voice of Brandon Darby, was made. He tweeted about it, two minutes later he had a short blog post about it, and then he was off and promoting the smear – claiming that this was done by Brett Kimberlin or an ‘associate’ – an un-subtle way of saying ‘Neal Rauhauser’.

If I were investigating this, which I am, I would be focused on Hynes Communications in general and James Richardson in particular. This company, now Romney’s online rapid response vendor, seems a very likely candidate as the architect behind what has been directed at Kimberlin. Specifically:

• James Richardson is a Hynes Communications staffer
• James Richardson is a former contributor to Red State, Erickson is founder
• GA Senator Saxby Chambliss has been pushing for investigation into swatting
• Richardson and Brandon Howell run GeorgeTipsheet.com
• GeorgiaTipsheet.com has a Capitol Hill source -Dome Confidential
• We’re working on the assumption Dome Confidential = Chambliss staffer
• O’Keefe was funded by American For Prosperity
• Darby and perhaps Stranahan were funded by Americans For Prosperity
• O’Keefe money/front man is Erick O’Keefe of Sam Adams Alliance
• Emily Zanotti is a Hynes Communications staffer
• Emily Zanotti was formerly the online strategy person for Sam Adams Alliance

There are plenty of non-trivial business, personal, and financial links between a small group of people.
They’ve got a history of criminality involving complex deception.

Aaron Walker, Manassas Virginia, June 25th
Walker was outed as the operator of the Islamophobic Everyone Draw Mohammed blog January of 2012, he was arrested for assaulting Brett Kimberlin on January 9th at a contempt hearing for Seth Allen, whom either he or Frey had been guiding to smear Kimberlin. He was arrested again for a peace order violation in June, and this triggered the massive “Everyone Blog About Brett Kimberlin” smear, publicly announced by Lee Stranahan and promoted by Ali Akbar/National Bloggers Club.
I have some information regarding connections between Hynes Communications, Romney online rapidly response, and Ali Akbar, founder of the National Bloggers Club. The public information about ties are tenuous, but the tight coordination seen between NBC and Saxby Chambliss’s office makes this all very interesting.
It should also be noted that Walker is another former contributor to Frey’s blog, also banned under mysterious circumstances.
We don’t have audio of the call but I know it did occur – I’ve spoken to the officer who responded. I am presuming we’re going to find Brandon Darby’s voice again.

So, the things you are seeing here are:

• Grimm extortion attempt reported, Weiner set up in response
• O’Keefe grand jury in New Hampshire, lots of antics because I carried documents for the AAG on the case into a hearing in New Jersey.
• Hynes Communications attempting to solve several problems at once, turning Brett Kimberlin into Bill Ayers for 2012, protecting Eric O’Keefe/Sam Adams Alliance, etc.
• Frey faces a civil suit from Nadia Naffe, witness to O’Keefe’s behavior, and I’m the one who got her the lawyer handling the case.
What happened to Stack was real from what I can see. What happened to Frey was a soft pitch from Darby, and Frey either knew before it happened, or they informed him right after the fact. Erick Erickson’s event is clear and intentional fabrication and I want to know what role James Richardson and Emily Zanotti of Hynes Communications played in it.
I am assuming that Walker’s false report call was also Darby – they have pointedly not released audio.
Given the timing, immediately after a hearing against Brett Kimberlin, this is fabricated even if they did manage to get someone other than Darby to make the call.

RAUHAUSER E-MAILS TO OFFICE OF REP. SANDY ADAMS

Congresswoman Adams recently led a group of 87 House offices in signing a letter regarding the hazard of “swatting”. You should take a close listen to this video.
You’ll hear the voice from the one legitimate swat call, which targeted Mike Stack in Montgomery Township, New Jersey. The call to John Patrick Frey was likely prearranged in order to cover up the first event and the call to Erick Erickson was certainly a fabrication intended to wind up public outrage and distract from the true source of this behavior.
[EMBEDDED YOUTUBE VIDEO]
The rest of the voice in the video is Brandon Darby. This man was an FBI informant from 2005 through at least 2008, and currently works with a man named Lee Stranahan they have a web site http://darbystranahan.com.
Lee Stranahan is a former contributor to John Patrick Frey’s site, http://patterico.com, but he was banned from writing there July 2nd, 2011. This was roughly a day after Frey’s own false police report event.
The details we have shared with the FBI and the local jurisdictions affected by these false reports are a bit dense for an introductory email, but the executive summary is that these men may have successfully pulled your office and 86 others into a conspiracy to obstruct justice.
I can forward you the rest of the information if you’d care to see it, I’m a D.C. area resident, and I’d be happy to meet with you and a few other staffers somewhere quiet so you can review the particulars before your boss gets drawn in any deeper. It’s best we move quickly on this a New York Times reporter has the story, and the the guy who made that video is part of a grassroots group that swings a lot of weight. It’ll break soon, Darby and Stranahan know this and they are already publicly blamestorming, having lost the support of “Brooks Bayne” in a messy online spat yesterday, and I’m sure more of the network of promoters will bail immediately when they understand what they’ve been duped into doing.
I have some other business on Capitol Hill later today I’ll just pass by your office, and if you’re available maybe we can discuss this in a quiet corner of the Longworth cafeteria.

I spoke with a lieutenant at one of the police departments in New Jersey moments ago, and he’s sent me on to a detective who’s handling the case. It’s a bit of a muddle, there were three jurisdictions involved in the response. I don’t envy your comm director it’s a messy situation if it does prove out that the whole thing is another complex fabrication from the Breitbart camp.

Is there a specific contact at the Department of Justice who is working on the swatting problem? This comparison of the swat callers voice and Brandon Darby seems very clear to me.
[EMBEDDED YOUTUBE VIDEO]
We’ve already given this, along with the background, to the effected municipalities, the FBI, the New York Times, the Orlando Sentinel, and I’ve taken the liberty of passing it to the Democratic party chairs in Brevard, Orange, Seminole, and Volusia counties.
I look forward to hearing back from you with the name of a specific person at the DoJ that you’ve identified as being responsible for following up on this very serious problem.

Just writing to let you know that I think we have found the right FBI agent regarding the false police reports that were directed at Mike Stack, John Patrick Frey, Erick Erickson, and Aaron Walker. They have heard the audio comparison of the caller to Brandon Darby’s voice and I received a “can’t comment on current investigations” response, but the manner in which it was conveyed indicates to me that there *is* a current investigation.
I am sure we’ll all be relieved when this dangerous practice is brought to a halt, and it’s a bit of a shocking twist that it’s a highly visible conservative activist who is behind it, don’t you think?

NYMag Plays The Race Card On #YouDidntDoThat

by Smitty

Raaaaacism, like flatus, is often closest to the emitter:

The key thing is that Obama is angry, and he’s talking not in his normal voice but in a “black dialect.” This strikes at the core of Obama’s entire political identity: a soft-spoken, reasonable African-American with a Kansas accent. From the moment he stepped onto the national stage, Obama’s deepest political fear was being seen as a “traditional” black politician, one who was demanding redistribution from white America on behalf of his fellow African-Americans.

Actually, President Obama’s voice is one of his better qualities. He consistently achieves a pleasant tone and cadence while serving a bunch of statist idiocy. To the tune of the Flintstones theme:

Race card. Meet the race card.
It’s the modern Commie’s favorite trope.
From the mouth of the Left,
It’s used like you’re a clueless dope.

Let’s ride with the family down the street.
The ACORN auto’s really sweet.

When you’re with the Flintstones
You’ll have a racially-guilted doo time.
A quota doo time.
You’ll have a gay old time*.

*In a future when all are legally required to co-star on an unspeakable 15 minute reality show to prove they’re not homophobic.

I realize that, to these flailing Lefties, playing the raaaaace card is the only way they can get electrolytes back into #OccupyResoluteDesk’s flagging campaign. It’s certainly easier than admitting the Progressive project is completely out of gas.

Jonah Golberg:

Jonathan Chait’s entry into the “if it’s bad for Obama, it’s racist” games is a keeper. What I love about this stuff is that liberals tend to insist how racism is not only repugnant to them, but alien to them. And yet, they continually demonstrate a sensitivity and acuity for spotting it that even real racists seem to lack.

We really need Amanda Marcotte to spin some theory that buggy makers in Lancaster County, PA are driving all this racial tension, due to hatred of the internal combustion engine.

Still more at VodkaPundit, also, Memeorandum and His Mexi-badness:

Notice also that [Chait] inadvertently confirms the conservative criticism that it’s the liberals who are race-obsessed. In a melanino-centric politics, all events, people and ideas have to be translated through dark brown-colored glasses. Thus, conservatives criticize Obama for being essentially socialist, extremist, radical, and statist, which are all supposed “dog-whistles” for race. But when Chait expressly says that “the core of Obama’s entire political identity” is a political fear of being seen as a black politician, this is intellectual brilliance!

Or auto-moronic asphyxiation–you make the call.

Also, Breitbart:

Sorry, Jonathan, but the only one “blatantly lying” here is you. And your vile race-baiting is equal parts hilarious, maddening, unAmerican, and just plain pathetic.

Barack Obama Is the Antichrist — and Other Neutral Objective Facts

“I agree with the late Hunter S. Thompson that a lot of what passes for ‘objective journalism’ is bullshit. . . . The reason so many Americans hate the news media is because so many supposedly ‘objective’ journalists are transparently dishonest in what they’re doing.”
— Robert Stacy McCain, April 16, 2009

The futile pursuit of that elusive phantom, “objective journalism,” may be more than a mere waste of time, but also a disservice to readers:

A new experimental study . . . finds that opinionated reporting is better at motivating the politically unengaged than objective reporting.
For years, much of the media has assumed that objective education, alone, was enough to promote a healthy democracy. What traditional media failed to realize is that a good chunk of the population needs a reason to care in the first place. “News articles that are written through the eyes of a mere observer, without a perspective or slant, can foster political disaffection among citizens,” explains author Minha Kim of Sungkyunkwan University.

An “experimental study”? The science is settled! The study itself appears to be motivated by left-wing sentiment, but makes valid points:

In situations where news consumers have well-established knowledge of important issues and converse frequently with fellow citizens, objective reporting actually promotes the legitimization of political actions, resulting in stronger participatory intentions on the part of the news consumer. An obvious limitation of journalistic objectivity is that a journalist must take on the role of a disengaged third person, but the willful ignorance of such a practice is not supposed to be the goal of the public journalist. Instead, objectivity needs to be distinguished from social detachment, and it is the latter rather than the former that a journalist needs to overcome. Although it is true that objectivity and social detachment overlap each other to a certain extent, a careful examination of the desirable journalistic role allows the two to be distinguished from each other.

Of course, this study doesn’t really tell us anything that students of Gonzo journalism didn’t already know. Outside of hard-core political junkies, nobody gets much excited about political news reported with bland even-handed neutrality by a bunch of faceless nobodies.

Grant that somebody has got to perform the thankless task of filing that toothlessly objective Associated Press story about the State of the Union speech, and we would be shocked if we picked up our local paper and saw an article like this on the front page:

PRESIDENT’S SPEECH REACHES HISTORIC
NEW LOWS IN SHAMELESS DISHONESTY

By Helmund Gormworthy
ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Obama’s annual State of the Union speech was a gigantic lie from start to finish, as he told one fib after another in an increasingly desperate effort to hide the multiple failures of his administration.
“My fellow Americans,” Obama began, in an obvious attempt to conceal his Kenyan ancestry, before proceeding to tell Congress a series of big fat whoppers in a deceitful lecture that continued for more than an hour before concluding with a trite and transparently insincere, “God bless America.”
During the course of his 72-minute speech, the president told 64 outright lies and more than three dozen half-truths, according to an analysis provided by the Republican National Committee.
“Frankly, the overwhelming stench of bullshit nearly made me vomit,” Speaker of the House John Boehner said afterwards. “This was the most heinously dishonest speech I’ve ever been forced to sit through. Not even Bill Clinton told this many outrageous lies.” . . .

You see my point, perhaps. What we are becoming accustomed to in the New Media age, however, is selecting our news from a vast smorgasbord of choices that didn’t exist 40 years ago, when the average person could choose from one local newspaper and three broadcast TV channels. Today there are not only multiple cable-TV news outlets — Fox, MSNBC, CNN — but also talk radio and a bewildering profusion of online sources, many of them strongly opinionated or at least quite selective in terms of their coverage.

I take it for granted that anyone reading this blog is a highly engaged news consumer, who is also gathering information from many other sources, and this assumption frees me from the burden of reporting everything in an entirely balanced way, as though my lack of objectivity might unfairly prejudice the reader’s viewpoint.

The larger the outlet, and the more it strives to be a “one-stop” outlet for news, the greater the danger that the biases of the editors and reporters might distort public perception.

This is why the biases of NBC Nightly News (about 8 million viewers) matter more than the biases of Fox News (about 3 million viewers for The O’Reilly Factor), especially because no one who tunes in to watch Bill O’Reilly is misled into thinking that he is strictly neutral in his viewpoint. I’ve repeatedly pointed this out: The combined audience for the “Big Three” evening news broadcasts is six or seven times larger than the Fox News audience, so why the Media Matters obsession with the alleged evils of right-wing bias at Fox?

What must be fought against is the journalistic herd instinct, the phony manufactured “consensus” of the Conventional Wisdom. The phenomenon we call “liberal bias” is merely one variety of this problem: Most news reporters and editors are liberal Democrats and therefore, however much they may pretend to be providing Neutral Objective Journalism, their coverage will necessarily reflect certain biases of their herd, for example in regard to the evils of homophobia, the dangers of global warming and the benefits of socialized medicine.

Those of us who don’t share those biases, and who wish to counteract the incessant yammering from vendors of Conventional Wisdom, are freed from any need to pretend that what we write is “balanced” to the point of being neutral. This doesn’t free us, however, from the need to provide readers with facts. Expressing our opinions is only helpful insofar as we are giving the reader access to facts they might not see in the mainstream media. One of my beefs about coverage of the 2010 mid-term elections is that it tended to downplay the sheer size of the Republican victory:

Buerkle’s victory brings to 63 the number of House seats gained by Republicans in the mid-term election. That’s the GOP’s biggest net gain in any election since 1938, and gives Republicans 242 House seats — the most they’ve held since 1949. Their majority is bigger by 12 seats than the one captured by Newt Gingrich’s GOP in 1994.

Nearly two years later, most people still don’t realize that the Republican victory in 2010 was actually bigger than in 1994, and I believe this lack of public awareness explains the persistent obstructionism — the do-nothing inertia — of Harry Reid’s Senate Democrats. Media talking heads keep whining about the alleged unwillingness of Republicans to “compromise,” but why should they compromise with the vastly unpopular liberal agenda of Democrats who just got embarrassed by one of the most lopsided electoral ass-whuppings in American history?

For essentially the same reason, I think the mainstream media are underrating the prospects of a landslide win for Mitt Romney in November. Defeating an incumbent president is, historically, a very difficult task. If you exclude LBJ’s decision not to seek re-election in 1968, only three times since 1932 has an incumbent president been defeated: When Jimmy Carter beat Gerald Ford in 1976, when Ronald Reagan beat Carter four years later, and when Bill Clinton beat George Bush in 1992. But all three of those elections occurred when the economy was bad, and this year the economy is much worse than it was in 1992, if not (yet) quite as bad as it was during the 1970s era of “stagflation.”

So when I went to an Obama campaign event in Virginia, which is supposed to be a crucial “swing state” this year, and found hundreds of fired-up Tea Party protesters outside the event, it struck me that the Conventional Wisdom might be completely wrong: Maybe Virginia will be safely Republican in November, and the public perception of Obama’s economic ineptitude will be so widespread that, rather than Obama hoping to win “purple” states like Colorado, Nevada and Iowa, the Democrats will find themselves fighting desperately to avoid defeat in previously “blue” states like Michigan and Pennsylvania.

I’m not saying that will happen, but it could happen, and the only reason most in the media are ignoring the possibility of a complete Democratic meltdown this year is that the Conventional Wisdom blinds them to evidence that might indicate that possibility. They haven’t even acknowledged the significance of the Republican landslide in 2010, and seem to have in mind that this was a trivial aberration.

Everybody seems to be taking for granted that this is going to be another election decided by a few percentage points in the popular vote and a slight tilt in a few key “battleground” states and who knows? They’re probably right. But if things start shifting toward a GOP landslide, don’t let the mainstream media tell you this is a shocking and unexpected development, because there are plenty of little clues that this is well within the range of possible outcomes, although not what you’d call a “likely scenario.”

The prejudice of political pundits is to keep their predictions strictly within the realm of the most likely scenarios, which is why really important shifts in the electoral landscape are always a shock to the people who manufacture and consume Conventional Wisdom. Back in March, I warned that if Romney got the nomination and polls showed Obama losing ground, the media would start playing the Mormon card, so I was scarcely surprised to see Brian Williams raise the issue during his interview with Mitt.

That’s a legitimate issue for a Republican, whereas no one in the media can be permitted to mention the 20 years Obama spent in the pews of Jeremiah Wright’s anti-American church.

Such are the parameters of public discourse as established by the Conventional Wisdom, and we aren’t supposed to notice the resultant artificiality of our political conversation.

Only by stepping outside that consensus to call attention to the overlooked facts — or to provide an interpretation of facts that doesn’t fit neatly within the consensus — is it possible to see anything other than what the Conventional Wisdom machine dispenses. If it were indeed a fact that Barack Obama is the Antichrist foretold in Bible prophecy, for example, you’d never see that reported on NBC News. The appearance of apocalyptic omens from the Book of Revelation would not be headlined as such in the New York Times.

Did Someone Say ‘Beandogs’?

Nice Deb invokes the magic word to describe the harassment of The Lonely Conservative, and let’s notice something in the list of methods:

They’ve told me to slit my own throat. They’ve called me every foul name you can think of. They’ve insulted my husband, accused me of molesting my children and threatened to report me to my local school board. They impersonated my husband and contacted a local divorce attorney. They tried to have pornographic sex toys catalogues sent to my home. They have sent emails on my behalf to my elected representatives advocating for policies I disagree with completely. . . .They’ve called my home using Caller ID spoofing software or websites. They’ve let me know they know where I live.

Caller ID spoofing? They know where you live? Gee, that sounds kinda familiar, doesn’t it?

“One of the things they’ve done to people who have worked with me in the past, including an L.A. prosecutor, is to ‘SWAT.’ That means that they’re spoofing phones, pretending to be somebody else’s phone, calling 911, and saying ‘I killed somebody’ and then the person’s home is met with the guns drawn, the SWAT and the helicopters, in a horrifying act. It’s happened twice: once in New Jersey, once in Los Angeles . . .”
— Andrew Breitbart, Feb. 29, 2012

Targeting someone for harassment using deceptive means to conceal participants’ online identities? Perhaps “to engage them with a synthetic presence”? Hey, that sounds kinda familiar, too!

In 2010, Rauhauser was involved in a scandal known as “TwitterGate.” Using a Twitter account called @WingNutWatch, Rauhauser was accused of having “organized a group of E-Thugs meant to harass, threaten, provoke, disparage, intimidate, verbally assault, berate & employ hate-speech against those not in agreement with his brand of politics,” to cite blogger Patrick Read’s September 2010 description. . . .
On Aug. 31, 2010, the same day he declared his intent to go after “right wing cells,” Rauhauser created a sock-puppet account he called “WingNutWatch,” which then acted as a sort of Twitter ringleader for the effort he described. It took less than a month, however, for Greg Howard, Patrick Read and @ZapEm to document the malicious actions of Rauhauser and his “beandogs,” resulting in the “WingNutWatch” account being shut down by Twitter.

Not only has Neal Rauhauser personally engaged in this kind harassment — go read Patterico’s 3,000-word account of how Neal used his “Gaped Crusader” persona for that purpose — Rauhauser has advocated such harassment and instructed others in these methods. Go read what Rauhauser wrote about “persona management” (how to protect a secret online identity), and then read Rauhauser’s account of how he joined forces with a “very big dog from Anonymous” in a plan to attack Brett Kimberlin’s enemies. Now, go read Rauhauser’s strategy to attack conservatives online in two posts (using his alias “Stranded Wind”) at the site Open Left:

Those two posts laid out the basic game plan of “TwitterGate,” an orchestrated campaign of harassment that erupted in September 2010, mere weeks after Rauhauser was a featured speaker at the DailyKos “Netroots Nation” conference.

The point is that Rauhauser is not just some random guy on the Internet, but has been a ringleader in fomenting the kind of viciousness that has been directed at The Lonely Conservative and others. When the people running the astroturf boycott against Rush Limbaugh’s advertisers feared their group had been infiltrated, they got Neal Rauhauser to “dox” the suspected spy:

Rauhauser . . . mused about exposing the man to harassment by sending his personal information to online groups.
“I have been sorely tempted to point him out to various actors — a guy like this, he could really produce some high quality entertainment for 4chan, Something Awful, Encyclopedia Dramatica, etc.,” Rauhauser wrote in his e-mail reply to [“Stop Rush” leader Matt Edelstein].

This is who Neal Rauhauser is. This is what Neal Rauhauser does.

He targets people for harassment and incites others to join his attacks on his targeted enemies, which he calls “high quality entertainment.” Having advocated such attacks, and having boasted of his skill at concealment and deception, Rauhauser cannot complain that he is wrongly suspected of complicity when the sadistic methods he has previously employed and endorsed are used to harass an innocent woman like The Lonely Conservative.

Remember that, when describing his plan to harass conservatives online in August 2010, Neal Rauhauser explained that his strategy was intended to provoke them into doing something that would provide the basis of civil or criminal prosecution:

We’re dealing with people who have likely had no interaction with the court system beyond a traffic ticket; the potential for a pro se litigant to force them into expensive, long distance, lengthy, discovery laden litigation doesn’t seem to cross their minds.

So there is profound irony in observing that Rauhauser is one of three defendants (along with Brett Kimberlin and Ron Brynaert) named in a Virginia lawsuit Aaron Walker filed in January:

Something tells me that twelve ordinary Virginians are not going to be very tolerant of this convicted domestic terrorist’s antics.

Probably not.

UPDATE: Linked by William Hoge — thanks! — and welcome, Instapundit readers! Zilla Stevenson has an honor roll of bloggers who have rallied to support and defend The Lonely Conservative.

BTW, Aaron Walker e-mails to say that the way I quoted him, it accidently implies that Rauhauser is the “convicted domestic terrorist” whose “antics” will be heard by a Virginia jury.

Of course, that description by Walker actually references Brett Kimberlin. However, the two appear to have become quite nearly inseparable, and every time Kimberlin shows up in court, Neal is part of the Brett’s entourage.

UPDATE II: Ace of Spades wrote this on May 22:

It is very easy to decide “this isn’t any of my trouble” and permit vicious behavior.
Easy. Perhaps understandable.
But hardly ethical. And certainly not heroic.
Who wants to get involved? Easier, and surely safer, just to duck one’s head and hide, and hope the danger visits someone else.
Perhaps the alligator will prefer to eat someone else first. Perhaps his belly will be full.
And why should you stick your neck out?

Here we are nearly two months later, watching as the alligators chomp on The Lonely Conservative’s leg, and it infuriates me. Because I know damned well this kind of harassment could be prevented, if law enforcement and political leaders were really determined to stop it.

Because Liars Hate Truth

Neal Rauhauser was a speaker at the 2010 Netroots Nation conference

“Facts don’t matter, that’s the perception of the situation, and the world is going to act on that basis.”
— Neal Rauhauser, “Gaped Crusader,” Nov. 26, 2011

“Neal’s antics were sufficiently disturbing enough to result in a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation. What the psychiatrist found was a man who was deeply disturbed, possessed of the worst narcissism he’d ever seen. Neal had reactive attachment disorder. He was sociopathic, and his behavior resulted in Neal facing various difficulties socially and professionally.”
— Screed of Momus, June 23

“Soliciting assistance in his plots — recruiting a gang of followers — functions psychologically as a means for Rauhauser to validate his grandiose narcissistic conception of himself as a heroic leader.”
— Robert Stacy McCain, June 15, 2012

In a phone conversation last night, regarding the outrage that prompted me to invoke the dreaded War Oath of Clan Cameron, a friend mentioned the possibility that Neal Rauhauser, who has in the past boasted about his pistols, might resort to violence.

“He’s a punk!” I shouted into the phone. “He’s a liar and a coward! Punks like that don’t scare me one bit. A man who is honest and brave is the man to be feared. Never be afraid of a lying coward.”

Rauhauser is obsessed with deception and secrecy — for evil men prefer darkness to light — and schemes to harm anyone who tells the truth about him. He has devoted nearly two years to an insane campaign of vengeance against Greg W. Howard, Patrick Read and “Zapem,” who exposed Rauhauser’s role in the 2010 TwitterGate scandal.

The liar knows in his heart he is wrong. Neal’s ferocious rage against his enemies can only be understood as an expression of his own cowardice in refusing to admit the truth about himself.

Nobody trusts Neal Rauhauser. Even his “friends” like Brett Kimberlin and Matt Edelstein distrust Rauhauser, with whom they associate only because his skill at deception is useful to them. They do not trust him, because they fear he might some day turn against them.

Indeed, his allies must constantly fear that he is even now deceiving them, accumulating evidence to be used against them in a future betrayal. Rauhauser’s habitual boasting has repeatedly brought him disgrace, and his attempts to impress others by naming his influential “friends” inevitably result in embarrassment for anyone who fails to keep away from him.

Darcy Burner made the mistake of befriending Neal Rauhauser, a friendship she is at pains to conceal now that she’s running for Congress and Rauhauser has been exposed as “The Gaped Crusader.”

Why does Rauhauser persist in his evil deceptions? Because there is always some new fool he can deceive, and even crude ruses give him the sadistic pleasure of thinking his lies have triumphed — however briefly — over the truth. Patterico explains one of Rauhauser’s methods:

Trickery works. People don’t expect every comment left as “Patterico” on a random website to be a trick by a Rauhauser-style scumbag dirty trickster.

By their “accuse the accusers” strategy, Rauhauser and Kimberlin have succeeded in deceiving fools, but the wise are not so easily deceived. And while the threats and tricks of Kimberlin and Rauhauser have inspired some to fear them, there are still honest and brave men in the world who consider it dishonorable to fear a lying coward.

Saturday in Centreville, I had dinner at Five Guys with Aaron Walker and his wife. Brett Kimberlin and Neal Rauhauser have endeavored to destroy Walker’s career and dishonor his name. Unfortunately for them, Aaron has survived and his name is now celebrated for his courage in standing up to these evil men.

At one point during our meal, Aaron’s wife threw her arms around his neck and declared that he is her hero.

No one will ever say that about the “Gaped Crusader.” Neal Rauhauser is no one’s hero, and no honest woman can admire a lying coward.

How’s Your Gaelic, Neal Rauhauser?

In the past week or so, readers may have noticed that I’ve relented in my non-stop blogging about convicted terrorist Brett Kimberlin and his demented associate Neal Rauhauser. On July 5, when Judge Rupp’s ruling restored Aaron Walker’s First Amendment rights, I figured this ended the original emergency that drew my attention on May 17. My family and I are now safely relocated, and it seemed a good time to return my attention to the presidential campaign that I had been covering before this emergency arose.

However, I did not for a moment suppose that Kimberlin, Rauhauser and their surrogates would cease their evil machinations. This expectation was fulfilled today when I was contacted by a blogger friend, who reported that she had received an utterly vicious e-mail sent by someone impersonating a mutual acquaintance, conveying vile falsehoods attributed to me.

That mutual acquaintance is clearly not amused, and the question of who perpetrated this mischief can perhaps permit some speculation.

Means, motive and opportunity, if you get my drift.

Who had a motive to do this evil deed? Who described himself as a “hacker” and boasted of his connection to the hacker group “Anonymous”? Who is a self-proclaimed expert in “persona management” and other means of online deception? Who has written at length about his fascination with Maltego software as a tool for mapping online connections? Who therefore would have sought to exploit such connections in this way?

Let me make clear that I do not accuse Neal Rauhauser of committing this crime. He might very much wish me to make such an accusation, thus allowing him to deny the accusation, demand “proof” of his guilt — which I don’t have — and thereby portray himself as a victim of defamation, harassment, blah, blah, blah.

Nevertheless, I hold Neal Rauhauser personally responsible, based on his own well-documented record of advocating, intructing others in, and personally engaging in such malicious online behavior.

Perhaps my suspicions are misplaced. Perhaps this particular act was committed by some random a–hole unconnected to Neal Rauhauser.

Whatever. It makes no difference to my resolute determination to see him brought to justice for his sociopathic behavior, which he had been directing at other innocent people even before I ever heard the name “Neal Rauhauser”. There is good reason to believe Neal has committed numerous sins against the innocent that will never be proven against him, his deceptions permitting him to evade responsibility. When the hammer of justice comes swinging down on his head, let no one pity him.

All this I say as preamble to the following:

  • If any of my friends should receive communications conveying negative information about me, be advised that I am apparently the target of a dishonest smear campaign. Others who have written about the Kimberlin/Rauhauser saga report that they have experienced similar smears. Be on the alert for any such deception.
  • Understanding that attacks like this may be an attempt to distract me from my regular work, I intend to continue focusing on the presidential campaign, reporting on further developments in “The Kimberlin Files” only as time permits.
  • This story is not over, and no one should mistake a momentary period of quiet for the end of the story.

Finally, I had hitherto resisted the temptation to do something I’ve only ever done once before. After what happened today, I resist no longer, and invoke the dreaded War Oath of Clan Cameron:

Chlanna nan con thigibh a so’s gheibh sibh feoil!

Good luck with the translation, Neal.
