The WaPo Looks Really Bad Over Christine O’Donnell

WaPo,
As a subscriber, one hopes that the correct people are held accountable for this debacle:
http://patterico.com/2010/10/20/wapoap-caught-revising-the-o%E2%80%99donnell-story-without-issuing-a-correction/
Suggestion: man up, do the correct thing, and give Christine O’Donnell a proper interview, post-haste. The media, in general, is engaged in a McCarthyite war against a lawful candidate, and the WaPo ought to be extinguishing, rather than pouring gasoline on the fire.
Regards,
Chris Smith,

In a prompt reply, the WaPo noted that this is an AP story. Also, Ace lowers the boom on Ben Evans. Note to self: do not aggravate Ace.

Unnamed Senior Dems Admit Delaware Senate Race Will Be Close

by Smitty

Some more insight into why Obama Went Down To Delaware, courtesy of HillBuzz, emphasis mine:

Somehow, I turned the topic. . .to Christine O’Donnell’s Senate race in Delaware because the guy I was talking to did a lot of fundraising in New England during the 2008 campaign and I know he “gets” states up there better than I do, having never lived there.

He told me that Christine O’Donnell is going to get VERY, VERY CLOSE to winning in Delaware but he does not think she will win. But, he emphasized, “It’s going to be scary close for Coons”.

I then asked him if he thought Scott Brown would win in Massachusetts, and he said, “No, I was surprised. I thought Coakley would win but it would be close”.

So, I’m thinking Democrats are really very scared of O’Donnell.

They can’t make the mental leap to believe she could win. . .just like they couldn’t wrap their heads around Brown winning “the Kennedy Seat”. . .but they see that O’Donnell is “close” in the way Brown was “close” in his race against Coakley.

My gut tells me that “close” means O’Donnell will win this is support continues for her nationwide the way it did for Hottie McAwesome in his Senate race.

The Cocktail Party GOP establishment didn’t like Brown anymore than it likes O’Donnell. It’s doing about as much for O’Donnell as it did for Brown, which is pretty much jack squat.

I don’t have anything concrete on this, but my GUT tells me that if we keep working hard for her that she’ll win…and defeat not only Coons, but the Cocktail Party GOP establishment too.

Message to Cocktail Party GOP establishment: Progressivism is political disco, and if you want to go under the bus, just keep screwing in the vertical.

Just Watched Christine O’Donnell And That Other Dude Debate

by Smitty

Update II: Let us pray that enlightenment, or a ludicrous amount of pressure, finds Mike Castle. No one can make the old duffer do the graceful thing here: he has every right to be a cantankerous, Ruling Class putz and fail to support the American cause. I support and defend his constitutional right to vie for the Richard Cranium of the Year Award. Nope; can’t take that from the chap. Can’t coerce him to endorse Christine O’Donnell and try to help recover the country. Limited to strong encouragement on this one.

Update: debate available here.
C-SPAN streamed it, and has much other political coverage.
Christine generally turned in a great performance. Her weakest question was recent SCOTUS decisions which she opposed. Apparently she’s fairly in agreement with the Roberts Court.
I just haven’t got a nice thing to say about Coons. Pet, indeed: he seemed to have swallowed every Progressive notion hook, line, sinker, and half the pier. Delaware could elect the HuffingtonPost.com to the Senate with no appreciable difference. OK, Arianna’s digital rag doesn’t meet the age requirement, but still.
Christine sounded a solid candidate. Coons, a condescending tool. A look at history might reveal to Delaware voters that it’s been the tools that have dug our huge economic pit.
Meanwhile, The Other Smitty is deeply sad that no one is loving the theme song for the Friday POTUS visit, Obama Went Down To Delaware. Read, guffaw, link, in that order.
Brokaw is on C-SPAN now doing the CA Governor debate. But I simply cannot listen to the man: his diction is excruciating. Retirement, perhaps?

Obama Went Down To Delaware

by Smitty

Obama going to Delaware on Friday? Via AmericanGlob, Rush says it’s all panic.
Allahpundit likes the WaPo analysis:

Obama isn’t just visiting; he is also bringing Vice President Biden, who formerly occupied the Senate seat and has already campaigned on behalf of Coons.

Democratic officials insisted the stop isn’t all about celebrating their luck with the O’Donnell nomination. “There’s nothing you can bank on in this cycle,” one strategist said, requesting anonymity so as to discuss political developments more candidly. “Christine O’Donnell came out of nowhere in the primary.” At the same time, the strategist said, the visit gives Obama and Biden a chance “to go help out a guy who’s going to be a United States senator.”

“Given the map out there, there’s a finite number of places Obama can go, and this is one of them,” the strategist said.

So it could be a feel-good, pick-me-up Friday trip to a state whose race is deemed both high-profile and safe.
No one else seems to be picking up on the possibility that O’Donnell is a Sarah Palin surrogate, a stand-in for the grizzly noir causing bedwetting in a Democratic master suite near you, if you hang your fedora near the Potomac.

A: Ludicrous Attacks From The Left

Q: What Do Christine O’Donnell And Pamela Geller Have In Common?

Via Salon, Kristen Wiig’s faux campaign ad from SNL this weekend:

I’m not sure, but the fact that SNL spent precious airtime on this could mean:

  • They’re reaching out to conservative viewers.
  • Their idea pool is completely empty.
  • Supporters of the Bearded Marxist really have a lot of loot to waste, and think that this will somehow help.

CHRISTINE O’DONNELL for U.S. SENATE

At least this attack features Wiig, is mercifully brief, and can be viewed as humor without too much effort.
Undaunted American patriot Pamela Geller, on the other hand, received the full Duranty treatment from the scurrilous New York Times:

Just to show how avid and careful they were in their quest for the facts, they have me video blogging from an Israeli beach. Won’t Fort Lauderdale be surprised to find out that the Zionist war machine is now occupying Florida beaches? Richer still was their reference to “arching her bikini-bared back provocatively.” Please. I was submerged in the water with my kids in the background. Talk about easily titillated! I never arched my back except to swim away. They’ve been spending too much time with the Taliban. And they fault me for equating Palestinians with Hamas. The Palestinians elected Hamas, but who cares?

I’ve met Pamela. Certainly, she’s as human as the rest. Yet I think she deserves a medal for her efforts to bring consciousness to a sleeping country. If you haven’t already, buy the book she co-wrote with Robert Spencer.

EXCLUSIVE: Christine O’Donnell Hits Democrat Chris Coons on Taxes Again

In her second statewide campaign mailing, Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell reinforces her message about Democrat Chris Coons’ record of raising taxes in New Castle County: “When it comes to politicians getting their hands on your tax dollars . . . no one does it better than Chris Coons!”

While O’Donnell’s two TV ads have employed an upbeat theme — “I’m you!” — this is the second mail piece by the Republican campaign to highlight Coons’ record on tax issues.

When Will Christine O’Donnell TV Ads Hammer ‘Baldy the Tax-Hiking Wanker’?

Woke up this morning to discover that last night’s post about Christine O’Donnell’s new ad was the top item at Memeorandum, with links by Da Tech Guy, Left Coast Rebel, Gateway Pundit and, of course, not Allahpundit. Yet I will quote He Who Linketh Not:

Not a syllable is breathed here about policy, party affiliation, or conservatism; it’s a straightforward “everyman versus the establishment” appeal which, thanks to O’Donnell’s poise and the direct, soft-spoken conversational appeal to the camera, ends up being quite arresting.

RightKlik at Left Coast Rebel sees the ad as a familar product of its creator, Fred Davis. Our MSNBC-watching friend Pete Da Tech Guy reports:

The Morning Joe crowd is laughing their heads off. I’m sorry they have no clue. If I’m O’Donnell I’m playing the clip of them laughing at her at every rally there is. That clip of the Morning Joe team laughing at her is a fundraiser waiting to happen.

This is predictable, and let them laugh. Dave Weigel has observed that liberals seem obsessed with O’Donnell “because at the end of the day they expect to beat her.” Their expectation may yet be disappointed and, meanwhile, O’Donnell is drawing media fire that might otherwise be directed at other Republicans. Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit notes a non-coincidence:

We haven’t seen the state-run media attack anyone so viciously since Sarah Palin came on the national scene in 2008.

This is not a coincidence because O’Donnell was the knockout blow in a rapid one-two combination — following Joe Miller’s Alaska triumph over Lisa Murkowski — aimed at the GOP Establishment by Sarah Palin, Tea Party Express, Mark Levin, and others who have sided with grassroots conservatives in this year’s primaries. After Miller beat Murky, the Establishment saw this punch coming and still couldn’t beat O’Donnell.

Knowing that O’Donnell represents the more powerful populist side of the Republican coalition — the one with the votes — the media are endeavoring to destroy her, to tell their audience: “See? We told you. They’re all a bunch of kooks.” Or, more to the point, a bunch of clowns.

If I had to offer one criticism of the O’Donnell campaign, it would be that they seem to be moving too slow. Three days after the Sept. 14 primary, Byron York called attention to the vulnerability of Democrat Chris Coons:

Coons, 47, is the top executive of New Castle County, home to a majority of Delaware’s population. From a Republican perspective, there’s one really important thing to know about his time in office: In 2004, when Coons first ran for the job, he promised not to raise taxes. Since then he has raised taxes not once, not twice, but three times.
Coons inherited a surplus. Celebrating victory on election night in 2004, he said his “top priority would be to continue balancing the budget without increasing property taxes,” according to an account in the local News Journal. Yet in 2006, he pushed through a 5 percent increase in property taxes. In 2007, he raised property taxes 17.5 percent. In 2009, he raised them another 25 percent.
Coons wanted to raise other taxes, too. He proposed a hotel tax, a tax on paramedic services, even a tax on people who call 911 from cell phones.

A week ago, the O’Donnell campaign sent out this mailer:

Having some relevant experience with video production, I bet it wouldn’t take 48 hours for anyone with access to Final Cut Pro to turn those basic facts into a hard-hitting 30-second ad. And had I been in charge of the O’Donnell campaign, saturating the Delaware TV market with that attack ad would have been Priority One. Yet here we are three weeks after the primary, and it hasn’t been done yet. So where is the attack ad making that argument?

“Chris Coons: He’s bald. He raised taxes. And he masturbates way too much.”

Make him deny it!

What Did I Tell You About Her?

Christine O’Donnell’s first TV ad of the general election campaign:

The American Spectator, July 27:

“[C]onservatives in Delaware have the benefit of backing an indisputably telegenic candidate. O’Donnell . . . has the kind of 100-watt smile that lights up a room.”

With a smile like that, she’s awfully hard to hate. The Castle campaign tried to demonize her and it backfired. Maybe Baldy the Tax-Hiking Wanker will have better luck. I doubt it.

She may not be a witch, but you can’t deny she’s got magic.

Photoshop by Carol at No Sheeples Here.

UPDATE: My filmmaker friend Ladd Ehlinger Jr. hates the ad — absolutely hates it. But he’s looking at it from a filmmaker’s point of view, whereas Ace of Spades sees the human side:

She has a useful amount of sadness in her, of whippedness, that pushes the right emotional button. She was beaten up — hard not feel sympathetic for someone beaten up.

Exactly. My point, however, is that TV is about images.

Forget the words. Just turn off the sound and look at it. The moment she flashes that first smile, the average person likes her. They can’t help it. It’s an autonomic response.

Whether “I like her” translates into “I want her to be Senator,” I can’t say. But we’ve recently elected a president whose chief politic assets are a resonant baritone voice and a vague resemblance to the Allstate man, so I think it unwise to underestimate the superficiality of voters in the Age of Image.

UPDATE II: Three Tweets:

As with everything else about O’Donnell, this simple ad seems destined to be controversial. If she wins on Nov. 2, all the criticism of her and her campaign will be forgotten. Victory has that effect in politics.
