Dreams of a Government Shutdown?

Republicans in the House have been pulling long hours to enact a continuing resolution that would extend funding for the rest of the fiscal year. And if they fail to get it passed before the current continuing resolution runs out, they plan to pass a stopgap short-term measure to prevent a government shutdown. Meanwhile, it appears, Democrats hope Boehner fails:

A high-ranking aide to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told chiefs of staff of Democratic lawmakers that a government shutdown is more likely than not, according to attendees.
Speaking at a regular meeting of the top aides to House Democrats, Pelosi’s floor director, Jerry Hartz, offered, unprompted, his assessment that the odds favor inaction before the government runs out of money, sources said.

This is almost certainly wishful thinking on Hartz’s part. Even the most ideologically rigid of Tea Party freshmen know the history of how Clinton (with the assistance of the media) demonized Gingrich’s Republicans over the 1995-96 shutdown, and are eager to avoid a repeat.

Furthermore, given their campaign mantra of “jobs, jobs, jobs,” the GOP freshmen want to be seen as working pragmatically on fixing the economy. It’s possible that the Democratic majority in the Senate could, by obstinate resistance, create a “no deal” standoff with House Republicans — but that wouldn’t cause a shutdown, just a resort to more short-term continuing resolutions while the impasse was negotiated.

And, at some point, President Obama might have the chance to cause trouble by wielding the veto. But again, that just takes us back to short-term continuing resolutions, and leaves Obama exposed to the accusation that he’s refusing to cut spending.

Some conservatives will be disgruntled by Boehner’s desire to avoid a dramatic showdown with Obama. For example, Ace of Spades was enraged by yesterday’s vote against an extra $22 billion in cuts, and Dave in Texas rages again today. But the GOP House leadership has to be thinking three moves ahead in this chess game, and a “reasonable compromise” now — however much it enrages conservatives — will put Boehner in a stronger position when he’s negotiating with the Senate and the President.

To my enraged and disgruntled friends: Chill.

Once they’ve got the continuing resolution in place for the rest of the fiscal year, House Republicans will immediately begin the budgeting process for the next fiscal year, and that’s when the real fun starts rolling. All you’ve got to do is wait a few weeks, OK?

At any rate, Pelosi’s fantasies of a government shutdown — giving her a chance to claim that House Republicans are a bunch of wild-eyed fanatical extremists — are almost certain to remain a fantasy.

Pelosi: ‘We Have No Regrets … Deficit Reduction Has Been a High Priority’

Exit, lying:

The facts:

When the Pelosi Democrats took control of Congress on January 4, 2007, the national debt stood at [$8.67 trillion]. The last day of the 111th Congress and Pelosi’s Speakership on December 22, 2010 the national debt was [$13.86 trillion] – a roughly $5.2 trillion increase in just four years. Furthermore, the year over year federal deficit has roughly quadrupled during Pelosi’s four years as speaker, from $342 billion in fiscal year 2007 to an estimated $1.6 trillion at the end of fiscal year 2010.

In E-Mail, Democracy for America Claims Credit for Bernie Sanders Filibuster

If you were wondering Friday why Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vermont Socialist, now apparently owns C-SPAN2, the answer — at least according to Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America (DFA) — is that he was following orders. This morning, Hasan sent this e-mail to DFA’s list:

It’s weeks like this that I’m reminded why I love working at DFA.
This week started off with a punch in the gut. The President had caved to Republican demands and agreed to extend the Bush tax cuts — not just to the middle class — but specifically to the very rich.
It was pretty awful news, but DFA members didn’t admit defeat. You told us that you were ready to fight — and fight we did.
On Monday, DFA members made over 12,000 calls to Congress demanding “No deal!” and joining thousands more calls made by members of MoveOn, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, CREDO Action, True Majority, and SEIU in a nationwide day of action.
On Tuesday, Senator Bernie Sanders on our DFA Live conference call with 5,000 DFA members committed to “do whatever it takes, including filibuster, to stop this deal.” Then, together with Sen. Sanders, we gathered signatures of over 50,000 Americans demanding Democrats in Congress reject the so-called tax “compromise.”
You know what? It worked.
On Thursday, House Democrats voted to reject the deal and Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she wouldn’t even bring it up for a vote. On Friday, Senator Sanders took to the Senate floor and held his own unconventional filibuster for hour after hour after hour. These bold leaders are showing everyone in Washington what it looks like when progressive Democrats stand up and fight for the middle class.
There’s no denying DFA members stood up, took action and delivered this week. You told us that you expected more from our leaders and together we delivered that message to Congress. You made them listen.
We’re not out of the woods yet. Corporate special interests are putting tremendous pressure on Democrats in Congress to cave and we need to keep fighting to make sure they stand strong.
I couldn’t be more honored to work with you every day. We can’t do the work that we do without you. Democracy for America depends on small contributions from members across the country to get the job done, so please contribute today so we have the resources to finish this tax cuts fight before Congress goes home for the holidays.
Please contribute $10 now and fuel our aggressive campaign to win.
Working together, we’re going to have a lot more weeks like this one.
-Arshad
Arshad Hasan, Executive Director
Democracy for America

Here’s a couple of screen shots from the DFA Web site to show how they’re promoting this “no deal” message:

So Hasan and DFA are taking credit for the Berniethon, the result of which will be . . .?

We don’t know yet. It is entirely possible that Democrats — who just suffered their biggest mid-term debacle since 1938 — will force so many changes to this compromise that Senate Republicans will be justified in saying, “No deal.”

And then everybody will get a tax increase on January 1.

Happy New Year!

What will then happen — as soon as the incoming House GOP majority is sworn in as the 112th Congress — is that Speaker Boehner and friends will pass a straight-up bill renewing the Bush tax cuts and making the old rates retroactive to Jan. 1. The Senate will then be forced to choose between passing this straight-up bill (not a compromise, no union-approved porky “sweeteners” for Democrats) or allowing the continuation of the higher tax rates. And every day the Senate delays passing that bill, more tax money will be drained from American paychecks, helping to prevent economic recovery.

All of which is to say, “Way to go, DFA! Way to ‘stand strong’ for your own political suicide! We’ll call your bluff and see how you like it in the 112th Congress, when John Boehner is ramming the GOP agenda down your throats!”

Remember when Obama said middle-class tax cuts were being held hostage by Republicans? No, it’s Democrats who are doing that, and Arshad Hassan just sent the ransom note.

Some people are too stupid to understand either economics or politics. We call these people “Democrats.”

I repeat: Thank you, Vermont!

‘President of the Back of the Bus’

In order to keep the leadership perks for herself and fellow big-shot honky Steny Hoyer, Nancy Pelosi created a meaningless “No. 3” position for James Clyburn. Michelle Malkin’s snarktastic reaction:

Imagine if the Republicans created a figurehead position out of thin air to keep “the black guy” from making waves and challenging the two white people at the top. MSNBC would have their lead story for the next week.
The new as-yet untitled position (I assume “President of the Back of the House Bus” is not under consideration) Pelosi is creating for Clyburn will at some point be known as “We lost because of him!”

(Via Memeorandum.) How is Nancy’s “Liberal Honkies in Charge” plan going to help Democratic turnout in 2012? Do you suppose Charles Lollar might get some of Steny Hoyer’s voters thinking twice?

Nancy Pelosi Tries to Evade Responsibility for Historic Defeat of House Democrats

At last count, losses for House Democrats appeared to total at least 63 seats, pending absentee ballots in some races and possible recounts in others. Among the defeated Democrats were such long-serving incumbents as Rick Boucher (14 terms, VA-9) and Paul Kanjorski (13 terms, PA-11), who had survived even the 1994 “Contract With America” GOP landslide.

But don’t blame Nancy Pelosi:

“We didn’t lose the election because of me,” Ms. Pelosi told National Public Radio in an interview that aired Friday morning. “Our members do not accept that.”
Instead, the California Democrat attributes the loss of at least 60 seats to high unemployment and “$100 million of outside, unidentified funding.” . . .
“The reason they had to take me down is because I’ve been effective in fighting special interests in Washington, D.C.,” Ms. Pelosi said, citing the health insurance and financial services industries. “I’m effective. They had to take me out. I’m also the most significant attractor to support for the Democrats.”
“So, I’m not looking back on this,” Ms. Pelosi said. “They asked me to run, I’m running. We don’t let the Republicans choose our leaders, and again, our members understand, they made me a target because I’m effective, politically and policy-wise.”

She’s so “effective,” isn’t she?

Yeah, you’re “effective,” all right. And the effect is a cataclysmic policy disaster for the nation and a political disaster for your party. (Exactly as predicted: “Democrats in the Deathmobile,” American Spectator, March 19, 2010.)

Given that the entire rationale of the Democratic Party is that no one should ever be responsible for their own lives — if you drop out of high school, get hooked on drugs and spawn a brood of impoverished fatherless children, you’re a victim — we should not really be surprised that Nancy Pelosi can’t even take responsibility for leading her party to its worst defeat since 1938.

The Democratic Party is in a ditch, and Nancy Pelosi’s just sittin’ up there, sippin’ on a Slurpee.

(Via Memeorandum.)

UPDATE: Mark Hemingway:

At this point suggesting that Democrats were buried under an avalanche of “outside, unidentified funding” is just an outright lie:

Overall, Democratic candidates in the 63 races that flipped to the GOP had $206.4 million behind them, a tally that includes candidate fundraising and spending by parties and interests. That compares to only $171.7 million for their GOP rivals.

Also, note that Democrats out-raised and outspent Republicans in every category this election cycle.

The Democratic Party doesn’t believe in these right-wing things you call “facts.” Hater!

UPDATE II: Nice Deb, “Democrats in Chaos.” including this very relevant quote from Byron York:

“In the course of the Obama administration we have seen examples of Democrats in the White House, Congress and across the government pursuing ideological goals that are not only not based on facts and science and argument but actually fly in the face of facts and science and argument.”

Meanwhile, the laughable results of ObamaCare.

Arguably The Most False Analysis Of The 2010 Election

by Smitty

A stunning case of cranial rectalitis on display. OK, the venue, Salon, is anything but unexpected, but William Saletan just couldn’t be further off base without exiting the ballpark. Empasis mine:

I’m not buying the autopsy or the obituary. In the national exit poll, voters were split on health care. Unemployment is at nearly 10 percent. Democrats lost a lot of seats that were never really theirs, and those who voted against the bill lost at a higher rate than did those who voted for it. But if health care did cost the party its majority, so what? The bill was more important than the election.

I realize that sounds crazy. We’ve become so obsessed with who wins or loses in politics that we’ve forgotten what the winning and losing are about. Partisans fixate on punishing their enemies in the next campaign. Reporters, in the name of objectivity, refuse to judge anything but the Election Day score card. Politicians rationalize their self-preservation by imagining themselves as dynasty builders. They think this is the big picture.

They’re wrong. The big picture isn’t about winning or keeping power. It’s about using it.

Sure, if your name is Vladimir Putin.
Now, for the American readership, let us remind ourselves that power corrupts, and the Constitution is a minimalist approach to lending just enough sovereignty and to a Federal government to secure life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for everyone.
Saletan and company do not grasp that the Internet has changed everything. Vulgar displays of power (Pelosi) are last year’s fashion news. Her continued presence in the House promises to be the negative advertising that punts another 60 Demo-Commies in 2012.
Welcome to the Post-Progressive Era, America. Saletan: you can keep your head parked in twilight, or let the truth that technology is now fulfilling the promise of an informed electorate dawn on you; it really makes no difference either way.

BUMPED: New Dennis Campaign Clip, Plus, Next House Located For Nancy

by Smitty

Update: It looks like FilmLadd strikes again, this time reprising A Few Good Men. Before anyone gets all nitpicky about the smoking materials, your attention is drawn to this link, which implies that Nancy is OK with a blunt, as long as no one is dressed in S&M garb, not that I have personal experience of either, mind you.

Possibly I should feel bad about ripping the record of the Speaker of the House so badly on Twitter:

Indeed, as her car runs out of gas, and the battleship runs aground, and there are no rabbits remaining in the hat, and the other shoe drops, and the hotel is sold off of her end of Pennsylvania Avenue, and she’s forced to mortgage the property, and even sell it to some Chinese player, this Helpy Helperblog would like to suggest a consolation prize: Continue reading BUMPED: New Dennis Campaign Clip, Plus, Next House Located For Nancy →

Pelosi: Raising Money for Democrats More Important Than Her Voters

Explaining why she has refused to debate her Republican challenger, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that raising money for Democratic candidates “across the country” is a higher priority for her.

A video posted at Republican John Dennis’s Web site, shows Pelosi being asked, “”Would you be open to debating your Republican opponent John Dennis in San Francisco?”

Pelso reponds: “Let me tell you what my priorities are. My priorities are to elect a Democratic Congress. In order to do that, it is essential for me – time is money for me. [Traveling] around this country, to amass the resources to put my candidates on TV. Whether I get a bigger majority or not in my district is not the point.”

Dennis first requested a debate with Pelosi a month ago, and recorded a humorous video about her refusal to debate:
