‘Ghost’ Gets 28 Years in Federal Prison

Posted on | July 28, 2024 | 1 Comment

Darrick Dernard Bell was known by a dozen aliases, including “Ghost” and “Tone,” during the years when he made the Victory Inn in Detroit a “house of horrors” before his criminal operation was busted and the sleazy hotel was demolished in 2018. Bell had six prior felony convictions, including second-degree murder in 1996, and why he was ever released from prison is something of a mystery, except to note that Detroit’s last Republican mayor left office in 1962. Even in that very bad city, however, the Victory Inn was notorious:

The building fell under the local spotlight in January 2017, when about 150 people from multiple agencies executed a federal search warrant at the motel as part of an ongoing investigation. The raid, which occurred on Jan. 12, found human trafficking victims, drugs, drug paraphernalia, a gun, evidence of drug use and dozens of cell phones, a federal court document said.
“Several of those human trafficking victims spoke with law enforcement and confirmed widespread and ongoing prostitution and drug distribution from the Victory Inn,” the document said. . . .
According to Detroit police, the Victory Inn, which is flanked by a topless club and an adult bookstore, had been a longtime problem. In 2016, Detroit police made 115 runs to the motel, which saw two shootings, numerous aggravated assaults, robberies and two homicides in which the victims were traced back to the Victory Inn.

I’m old enough to remember when Hollywood made movies like Pretty Woman, which portrayed prostitution as glamorous, and I’m also old enough to remember when rock stars like Glenn Frey sang songs that depicted drug trafficking as an exciting adventure. The squalid reality at the Victory Inn ought to be turned into a movie, as a warning to anyone who might be deceived by such myth-making. When the feds raided the Victory Inn, they didn’t find Bell and he was a fugitive for more than two years before the U.S. Marshals caught him in July 2019.

Bell had cocaine and $12,000 in cash on him when they caught him at a cheap motel in Monroe, about 40 miles south of Detroit. While his accused co-conspirators pleaded guilty, Bell went to trial and was convicted on the drug charges, but the jury couldn’t reach guilty verdicts on the pimping accusations, an outcome perhaps based on the principle of “you can’t believe them lyin’ hoes.” So it would put me at risk of a libel suit were I to call Darrick Bell a pimp, but readers can draw their own conclusions. I’ll merely quote the U.S. Attorney’s Office:

Darrick Bell, the leader of a large-scale drug conspiracy that operated out of the former Victory Inn hotel in Dearborn, Michigan, was sentenced today to 28 years in prison based on his conviction on drug trafficking charges, announced United States Attorney Dawn N. Ison. . . .
Bell, age 55, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Mark A. Goldsmith.
The charges on which Bell was convicted stemmed from the operation of a large-scale drug operation Bell created utilizing the Victory Inn, a motel formerly located next to the main drag for prostitution on Michigan Avenue.
The trial, which began on April 12, 2022, and concluded on June 2, 2022, involved more than 20 witnesses, including several of Bell’s co-conspirators and victims, along with hundreds of exhibits. The jury convicted Bell on three drug-related counts. The jury acquitted Bell on one count involving sex trafficking and was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on the remaining four counts involving sex trafficking. . . .
There was often no vacancy at the Victory Inn because the rooms were full of women and victims living in unspeakable conditions as severe drug addicts. Bell would supply drugs to these women. The women would use the drugs, engage in commercial sex acts, and then would use the money from their dates to purchase more drugs. The women were trapped in a vicious cycle of addiction, which Bell exploited for financial gain. Bell and his co-conspirators would use violence or the threat of violence to ensure that the women continuously paid their ever-growing drug debt. This would include physically striking them or withholding drugs so they would go through excruciating withdrawal symptoms. In one instance, Bell shaved the head of one of the women.
“Today’s sentencing closes a chapter on the house of horrors that was the Victory Inn. Just as the motel was demolished, so too was the drug network Bell had organized and led for nearly a year. Bell’s rein and control over the women living at the Victory Inn was nothing short of abhorrent,” said U.S. Attorney Ison. “Bell’s attempt at evading justice for over two and a half years failed, and he will now spend the next 28 years in prison for his actions.”

“No Vacancy at the Victory Inn.” It’s not a romantic comedy. Julia Roberts and Richard Gere won’t be starring in that movie.

FMJRA 2.0: A Glimmer of Hope

After a couple of weeks getting their faces eaten by various teams, my Senators actually had a 3-3 week. It started badly with us losing two of three games to the Cubs at Wrigley, but we came home and won two of three against the A’s. We’re still a game behind Oakland at 47-65, at the bottom of the division, but even though we’re facing the Twins on Tuesday, we get the Expos next Friday, so we have a chance at another .500 week.

‘Return America to a Dark Past’

Posted on | July 27, 2024 | 3 Comments

1959 Chevrolet advertisement

One of the things every liberal must believe is Progress, a quasi-religious faith which G.K. Chesterton mocked as “people who prefer Thursday to Wednesday because it is Thursday.” The apostles of Progress would have us believe that 1959 — the year I was born — was a nightmare dystopia, despite those snazy new Chevy station wagons, and that if Donald Trump gets elected in November, we are all going back to 1959.

That was the message Kamala Harris shared in a speech to the American Federation of Teachers this past week:

THE VICE PRESIDENT: So, Project 2025 is a plan to return America to a dark past. Donald Trump and his extreme allies want to take our nation back to failed trickle-down economic policies —
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: — back to union busting —
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: — back to tax breaks for billionaires.
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: Donald Trump and his allies want to cut Medicare and Social Security —
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: — to stop student loan forgiveness for teachers and other public servants.
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: And I say to AFT: They even want to eliminate the Department of Education —
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: — and end Head Start —
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: — which, of course, would take away preschool from hundreds of thousands of our children. He intends to give tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations and make working families foot the bill. And he intends to end the Affordable Care Act. Now, think about that — to take us back to a time when insurance companies had the power to deny people with preexisting conditions. Remember what that was like?

Yes, ma’am, I remember those dark days before the “Affordable Care Act,” before — [ checks calendar ] — March 23, 2010.

“Grandpa, what was it like to live in ‘a time when insurance companies had the power to deny people with preexisting conditions’?”

Well, sonny, lemme tell you, it was plenty rough. Back in those days, people had to pay their own bills, so they worked what were called “full-time jobs,” instead of hustling as DoorDash drivers or peddling naked selfies on OnlyFans. Yes, I remember when gas was less than $3 a gallon and interest on the national debt was less than a trillion dollars a year . . .

Perhaps you see my point:

Eleven days ago (see “The Paranoid Temptation,” July 16), I pondered what we were being told about the then-recent assassination attempt against Trump:

So the son of two mental health professionals gets his hands on an AR-15, climbs onto a roof 130 yards from the Republican presidential nominee, and comes within a fraction of an inch of splattering Trump’s brains all over the place. Nothing suspicious at all about that.
Have you considered the possibility that you’re not paranoid enough?

Many more strange events have since transpired. On July 17, President Joe Biden canceled his schedule in Las Vegas and flew back to Delaware, after it was reported he had tested positive for COVID-19, a virus most Americans have forgotten about. So, the Republican challenger survives an assassination attempt on Sunday (July 13), and four days later, the incumbent Democrat has a sudden health crisis. Nothing suspicious at all. Random coincidence — a flock of black swans, as it were. . . .

That’s from my latest Substack column, and I hope everybody signs up for a free email subscription. You can also pay for a subscription ($5 a month, $30 a year) which might come in handy when I finally get around to creating content behind a paywall, which I haven’t done yet.

What’s the Substack policy on naked selfies? Never mind. I’m sure nobody would pay for that . . .

Living in Interesting Times

Posted on | July 25, 2024 | 2 Comments

Early this morning, I found myself researching the British industrialist and politician Joseph Chamberlain, whose son Neville became the Prime Minister ruined by appeasement. It was apparently from Joseph Chamberlain that his other son, Austen (Nevill[e’s half-brother) derived the idea of “may you live in interesting times” as being, as is often said, an ancient Chinese curse. Whatever the origins of the phrase may be, certainly we are now living in interesting times, although as Sarah Hoyt notes, bizarre and weird are suitable synonyms for “interesting.”

Wednesday night, our alleged president gave a prime time televised speech from the White House in which, amid much slurring and stumbling, he avowed his devotion to “the sacred cause of this country . . . the cause of American democracy itself.” Was this a tautology or a non sequitur? Forget it, Biden was rolling:

The cause of American democracy itself. We must unite to protect it.
In recent weeks, it has become clear to me that I need to unite my party in this critical endeavor. I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future, all merited a second term. But nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition.
So I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. It’s the best way to unite our nation. I know there was a time and a place for long years of experience in public life. There’s also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices, yes, younger voices. And that time and place is now.

What do you notice about that? First, that it’s an outright lie — Joe did not “decide to pass the torch.” That decision was imposed on him by the big-money donors and Democratic Party power brokers who, after his June 27 debate debacle, spent three weeks organizing a pressure campaign to boot Biden off the ticket. Second, at no point during this speech did Biden actually explain why this decision was made:

So, Biden has to drop out because his record is so good? His record is so good that the only way to unite everyone is for him to drop out.
The most popular, noble, and spectacular president ever just has to pass the torch to a new generation.
Um, what? That makes no sense. That does not explain why he had to drop out. .

Go through the whole transcript of the speech and see if you can find anything other than this vague “sacred cause of democracy itself” stuff as a justification for Biden’s withdrawal from the campaign. But giving the American people an honest explanation wasn’t really what this speech was about. It was actually a 10-minute campaign speech, and the TV time allotted to it ought to be counted as an in-kind contribution from the networks, none of which offered anything other than undiluted praise for the speech. The premise — that “American democracy itself” is at stake — is never questioned by the TV talking heads, all of whom apparently share Biden’s belief that “American democracy” will abruptly end the next time Republicans win an election. As for the “new generation” to whom Biden has “decided to pass the torch,” that would be 59-year-old Kamala Harris.

Since Biden ended his reelection bid on Sunday, as Matt Vespa says, there has been “a gaslighting operation, unlike anything we’ve seen, where the establishment media is re-writing history,” including the attempt to deny that Harris was ever appointed as Biden’s “border czar.” In fact, Harris “was tapped by President Biden to handle the migrant crisis” in March 2021 and while “border czar” was not her official title, it was widely used in media reports at the time.

It is truly Orwellian, the revisionism that the media are now doing in their effort to sell Kamala to a resistant electorate. By the way, MSNBC and CNN will tell you that it’s sexist and/or racist to refer to Kamala by her first name, even though such familiarity is commonplace — Bill, Joe, Bernie, Dubya, etc. — in political discussion. Furthermore, you will be told by the media, the way you pronounce her name may be racist, if you say “ku-MAH-luh” instead of the preferred “KAH-muh-luh.”

Be patient, my friends. After Nov. 5, you can just call her loser.

The less said about the Senators’ miserable week, the better.
Son of Silvercon II was a lot of fun, even if we didn’t get the attendance we hoped for. Going to do a longer writeup on the Friends of Fission-chan blog later and link it up. I cannot for the life of me remember why I didn’t mention it last week and give people a heads-up that the FMJRA and Rule 5 Sunday would be omitted/delayed.
