TERROR IN FRANCE: POLICE KILL MUSLIM FANATICS IN STANDOFFS; UPDATE: HUNT FOR FEMALE TERRORIST BOUMEDDIENE

Posted on | January 9, 2015 | 43 Comments

Hayat Boumeddiene (left) and Amedy Coulibaly (right)

Events in and around Paris unfolded so rapidly Friday that news reports were still confused and tentative as night fell in France:

French police have released the names and pictures of two suspects wanted in connection with the killing of policewoman Clarissa Jean-Philippe in Montrouge and an ongoing hostage siege at a kosher supermarket in a Paris suburb.
The suspects, 32-year-old Amedy Coulibaly and 26-year-old Hayat Boumeddiene, are described as “armed and dangerous” and are being hunted by police for the killing of the policewoman.
Coulibaly is also believed to be behind the shootout and siege at a Jewish supermarket in Porte de Vincennes, in which two people have reportedly died and at least five people are being held hostage, including women and children.

Culibaly was reportedly killed by police, and the death toll of hostages at the kosher market is now reported at three. Boumeddiene is said to be at large. Coulibaly was reportedly an accomplice of the two brothers who killed 12 people in the Wednesday attack. Both of them were killed by police after a hostage standoff Friday:

The French police on Friday killed the two brothers suspected of massacring 12 people at a Paris newspaper on Wednesday and freed a hostage they had been holding unharmed, the authorities said. The police also killed another hostage-taker, described as an associate of the brothers, in a separate assault on a kosher supermarket in Paris.
Three hostages were killed and five injured at the market, although it was not immediately clear how many of those may have been shot in the final assault. Five hostages were reported to have been freed unharmed, a senior French police official said.
The assault against the two brothers, suspects in the attack on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, began shortly after 5 p.m. Explosions and gunfire were heard at a printing plant in Dammartin-en-Goële, outside of Paris, where the gunmen were holding a single hostage.

UPDATE: The suspect who remains at large:

The whereabouts of Hayat Boumedienne are unknown after police named her as an “armed and dangerous” suspect.
The 26-year-old is believed to have been in a relationship with Coulibaly since 2010 and reportedly lived in his apartment while he was in prison for his part in a plot to spring Paris metro bomber Smain Ait Ali Belkacem from prison.
According to Le Monde, Boumeddienne said they practised firing crossbows together in the countryside while visiting Islamic radical Djamel Beghal. . . .
Boumeddienne was previously interviewed by French anti-terror police in 2010, it was reported, but it was unclear whether any action was taken against her.

UPDATE: More information emerges:

Boumeddiene is linked to the Kouachis through Couliably, whom police believe became radicalized after meeting one of the brothers around 2005 while he was jailed for robbery.
Coulibaly was later arrested in 2010 in connection to plans to free a terrorist serving a life sentence for the Paris metro attack in 1995 and served a four-year prison sentence. After being released in 2014, he moved in with Boumeddine.
In 2010, during a visit to Djamel Beghal, a convicted al Qaeda terrorist under house arrest in southern France, Boumeddiene and Couliably took a series of photos together. When Boumeddiene was asked about the trip by police she claimed they were there for “crossbow practice.”

This is astonishing. All of these Muslim terrorists — Boumeddiene, Couliably and the Kouachi brothers — were known to French authorities and yet they were evidently permitted to loiter around in the suburbs of Paris, plotting their deadly attack? Really? Who is in charge of the French anti-terrorism unit, Inspector Clouseau?

What I Read On My Christmas Vacation

Posted on | January 8, 2015 | 31 Comments

— by Wombat-socho

It’s been a few weeks since I did a book post, so I’ll try and make up for it by covering a decent variety of stuff. First, I want to talk about John Ringo’s Ghost and Kildar, which are more technothrillers than SF. To put it briefly and bluntly, if you liked Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six but thought it needed more explicit sex (especially of the BDSM variety) then these are the books for you. I liked the main plotline well enough, but I’m not gonna lie – much as I skimmed through the intensive math in Cryptonomicon, I skipped the more pornographic parts of these novels.

Also outside the usual run of reading was M.C.A. Hogarth’s A Rosary of Stones and Thorns, which has a most unusual Five Man (sic) Gang trying to avert Armageddon. Reminded me of the Christopher Walken movie The Prophecy in a way, but it’s a very different story. Worth your time, and would probably have gotten a nihil obstat if Hogarth had bothered.

I’ve remarked on David Drake’s habit of reforging historical events into SF novels, and he’s done it again with Into the Hinterlands, a quirky biography of a George Washington analog set in a future dominated by a decadent Terra and her first-generation colonies. Drake and British SF author John Lambshead do a good job of showing Allen Allenson’s life on the frontier, and anyone familiar with Washington’s youth can pick out the major events that shaped the man who would lead the Continental Army and later, the United States as its first president – but those events are for the sequels to this. Decent brain candy, especially if you like history.

Back in the days of the Cold War, Jerry Pournelle edited a series of anthologies called There Will Be War, which combined SF with non-fiction articles and occasional poetry. Vox Day and Tom Kratman have done much the same with Riding the Red Horse, a collection of SF and non-fiction that examines terrorism and the rise of Red China to superpower status in the same way Pournelle’s anthologies examined the Cold War with the old Soviet Union. I’m only partway through it so far, but I think I’ve read enough to say this is just as good as the Cold War version.

Still working on Paul Cornell*’s London Falling, which reminds me somewhat of Charles Stross’ Rule 34, except instead of post-modern SF what we have here is supernatural horror, and instead of the mildly annoying office politics in Stross’ novel, the Metropolitan Police in Cornell’s tale are out for blood. Also unfinished, but still recommended for those that like their urban fantasy dark and gritty.

Muslim Fanatic Defends Savage Murders by Fanatical Murderous Muslim Savages

Posted on | January 8, 2015 | 150 Comments

Muhammad was a bloodthirsty polygamous warlord and also the prophet of a religion that commands the murder of non-believers:

USA Today caused a stir [Wednesday] night when they published a column from Anjem Choudary, whom they describe as “a radical Muslim cleric” from London specializing in shari’a law. . . . Choudary blames France for not protecting “the sanctity of a Prophet,” and says we should not expect anything else other than murder from Muslims when that doesn’t happen . . .

Most people don’t know what Islam actually teaches, and those who tell the truth about Islam are often denounced as warmongers, bigots and even “racists.” Islam is a religion not a race, of course, and Muslims of every race murder non-believers of every race. Some of the most dreadful savagery committed in the name of Islam has been perpetrated against Africans. The claim that critics of Islam are “warmongers” is even more absurd: Islam is at war with us, whether we fight back or not.

The most influential Muslim leaders are determined to annihilate every Jew in Israel and, because the United States is Israel’s strongest ally, America has been branded “The Great Satan.”

Nothing we say or do as Americans — no policy of our government — can ever appease our Islamic enemies. Even if we were to abandon our alliance with Israel, the resulting slaughter of every Jew in Israel would only be the prelude to our own slaughter. Islam commands this, it requires this, and we should be grateful to the editors of USA Today for allowing Anjem Choudary to tell us the truth:

Contrary to popular misconception, Islam does not mean peace but rather means submission to the commands of Allah alone. Therefore, Muslims do not believe in the concept of freedom of expression, as their speech and actions are determined by divine revelation and not based on people’s desires.
Although Muslims may not agree about the idea of freedom of expression, even non-Muslims who espouse it say it comes with responsibilities. In an increasingly unstable and insecure world, the potential consequences of insulting the Messenger Muhammad are known to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
Muslims consider the honor of the Prophet Muhammad to be dearer to them than that of their parents or even themselves. To defend it is considered to be an obligation upon them. The strict punishment if found guilty of this crime under sharia (Islamic law) is capital punishment implementable by an Islamic State. This is because the Messenger Muhammad said, “Whoever insults a Prophet kill him.”
However, because the honor of the Prophet is something which all Muslims want to defend, many will take the law into their own hands, as we often see.
Within liberal democracies, freedom of expression has curtailments, such as laws against incitement and hatred.
The truth is that Western governments are content to sacrifice liberties and freedoms when being complicit to torture and rendition — or when restricting the freedom of movement of Muslims, under the guise of protecting national security.
So why in this case did the French government allow the magazine Charlie Hebdo to continue to provoke Muslims, thereby placing the sanctity of its citizens at risk?
It is time that the sanctity of a Prophet revered by up to one-quarter of the world’s population was protected.

Damn your honor and damn your Prophet, you murderous savages.

“Truth is great and will prevail if left to herself . . . she is the proper and sufficient antagonist to error, and has nothing to fear from the conflict, unless by human interposition disarmed of her natural weapons, free argument and debate, errors ceasing to be dangerous when it is permitted freely to contradict them.”
Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, 1786

OFFICIALS IDENTIFY THREE ISLAMIC TERRORISTS IN FRENCH ATTACK

Posted on | January 7, 2015 | 25 Comments

Three French-born Muslims — Said Kouachi, 34, Cherif Kouachi, 32, and Hamyd Mourad, 18 — have been identified as the terrorists whose rampage in Paris killed 12 and wounded 11 others:

After a long day of rapidly changing information, U.S. counterterrorism officials said Wednesday night that they cannot be certain of the status of the three suspects in the Paris attack on Charlie Hebdo magazine. Information from French sources has been contradictory, they said.
Earlier Wednesday, two senior U.S. counterterrorism officials told NBC News that one of the suspects in the attack had been killed and that two others were in custody. However, the officials later said the information that was the basis of that account could not be confirmed.
Authorities earlier identified the three men as Said Kouachi, 34, and Cherif Kouachi, 32, French nationals who are brothers, and Hamyd Mourad, 18. Late Wednesday, French police released photos of the brothers and asked for public help in finding them, and French authorities said the youngest of the three suspects had surrendered to police.
An official who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to publicly discuss the investigation told The Associated Press that the men were linked to a Yemeni terrorist network. Cherif Kouachi was convicted in 2008 of terrorism charges for helping funnel fighters to Iraq’s insurgency and sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Twelve people were killed in the attack by gunmen, armed with AK-47s, who attacked the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a publication that has enraged Muslims for publishing cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
A source familiar with the investigation told NBC News on Wednesday night that two officers who had been assigned to protect Charbonnier for the past several years came down from an upper floor and intercepted the gunmen. Both officers were shot, however, and one died at the scene. The other was wounded and is expected to survive.
The men targeted those magazine employees who had created or published cartoons showing Muhammad — asking for their victims by name, the source said. They executed editor and cartoonist Stephane Charbonnier, popularly known as Charb; Bernard Maris, a Bank of France economist who was a columnist for the magazine; and three cartoonists.

Uncertainty about the status of these suspects — which of them are in custody, whether one has been killed — should be cleared up within a few hours. It is astonishing that one of these monsters was previously convicted on a terror-related charge, yet served only 18 months in prison.

UPDATED: MUSLIM TERRORISTS ATTACK MAGAZINE OFFICE IN PARIS, KILL 12; AL-QAEDA IN YEMEN?

Posted on | January 7, 2015 | 124 Comments

At least 12 people were reportedly killed when Islamic terrorists with AK-47 assault rifles attacked the Paris offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo today:

One of the men was captured on video shouting “Allah!” as four shots rang out. . . .
“This is a terrorist attack, there is no doubt about it,” President Francois Hollande told reporters after rushing to the scene of the attack. . . .
Sirens could be heard across Paris as Prime Minister Manuel Valls said security would be ramped up at transport hubs, religious sites, media offices and department stores. . . .
Late last year, a man shouting “Allahu Akbar” (“God is greatest”) injured 13 by ramming a vehicle into a crowd in the eastern city of Dijon. French officials say several attacks were prevented in recent weeks and Valls has said France had “never before faced such a high threat linked to terrorism.”

This is the same magazine whose offices were fire-bombed in 2011 for publishing cartoons about the Prophet Mohammad. The terrorist gunmen are reportedly still at large.

UPDATE: “We are all Charlie now.”

If only the National Rifle Association hadn’t stopped France from closing the “gun show loophole” . . .

UPDATE II: An interesting claim:

Two terrorists shouted that they were from al Qaeda in the Yemen before they launched the brutal attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris.
Cédric Le Béchec, a 33-year-old estate agent who witnessed the attack on the satirical magazine, said the men told bystanders to inform the media that they were from the terror group.
He said that the men arrived in a black car, stopping in the middle of the street. One of them was carrying a rocket-propelled grenade. They were dressed in black military-style clothing.
Mr Le Béchec said that before launching the assault, the attackers approached another man in the street saying, “Tell the media that this is al-Qaeda in the Yemen.”

It is never wise to jump to conclusions based on early reports in a breaking news situation like this. But if this report is accurate, why do Yemeni Muslims hate French journalists?

That is to say, of all the places in the world where these terrorists could have struck, why Paris? Was this simply a target of convenience, some place nearby where these Muslims lived? I have no idea what the French policy is vis-a-vis Yemen, but this attack would seem to invite the question of whether Islamic terrorists give a damn about any nation’s policy. Muslims want to kill us all and destroy our civilization, and we should never make the mistake of thinking that our government policy is to blame for Islam’s murderous hostility toward us.
