Kerry Patton, over at Breitbart.com, ought to know better: chess is not poker.

On February 16th, Director Clapper released yet another intelligence gap-laden threat assessment for the Senate Committee on Armed Services. In the thirty-one page threat assessment, not once does it mention the terrorist group Hezbollah or any of Iran’s asymmetric militant entities within the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) or Al Quds.
This comes during a time when Hezbollah operatives were recently arrested in Thailand. Last month, Hezbollah and IRGC operatives were arrested in Azerbaijan for plotting attacks against foreign targets. Inside the United States, one Iranian-controlled asset was recently arrested for plotting an assassination attempt against the Saudi Ambassador.

Read the whole thing if you like, but the gist is that Patton can’t grasp why the U.S. government would issue a “gap-laden threat assessment” to the public. As though our intelligence assets, like chess pieces, should be on the board, publicly visible.

Real world situations are more like five card stud. The cards are held close to the chest. Diplomatic calls for clarity are exceeded only by the clandestine instances of cheating; the integrity of international discourse, like resistance in parallel, is just a little lower than the lowest bastard on the scene.

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania
We got to our hotel here about 1:30 a.m., after a 35-mile drive from Steubenville, Ohio, scene of last night’s victory celebration for The Next President of the United States, Rick Santorum.

My 13-year-old son Jefferson accompanied me on this trip, wearing a T-shirt — “Bloggers Save the World Tonight,” which I brought home from the CPAC Blog Bash — underneath his Alabama Crimson Tide hooded sweatshirt. On the way from Steubenville, we went through the drive-thru at a McDonald’s which for some reason was out of their regular hamburger patties, and so we ordered the Angus Mushroom & Swiss burgers with two large orders of fries and two large sweet teas.

Jefferson pronounced his Angus Mushroom & Swiss “the best burger ever.” He has a habit of speaking emphatically.

I don’t know where he got that.

He’s pretty handy as an editorial assistant, the main duties of which are to pack and unpack my laptop, set it up and log in online wherever we are. I use a separate full-size keyboard and mouse with my laptop, mainly because I can’t stand the cramped feeling of typing on the laptop keyboard, where accidentally touching the thumbpad causes the cursor to skip around in annoying ways. Also, I type so hard — having learned on a manual typewriter — that I have a tendency to wear out keyboards pretty quickly. A replacement keyboard can be had for about $10 at Wal-Mart, and so I use that, but the hassle of packing and unpacking the extra gear is a task I’m happy to foist off on my 13-year-old son, who doesn’t mind being paid in cheeseburgers.

Jefferson can also be tasked to other duties. Last night, after my interview with Santorum strategist John Brabender, I downloaded the audio and assigned Jefferson to transcribe it while I made a run for supplies. (There weren’t enough electrical outlets at the media table, so I drove to Family Dollar and spent $9 on an 8-outlet power strip, and also bought a $1 pack of gum as “bonus pay” for my editorial assistant.)

He got about 250 words of the audio transcribed while I was gone, and I finished it up. When it was time for The Next President of the United States to give his Super Tuesday victory speech, I handed Jefferson the pink camera and told him to go get video clips. Read more

Even if Rachel Maddow were to bloviate for a thousand days straight trying to connect the dots between racism and that phrase, she would only have the historical fact that her daily beclownment strove foolishly for a thousand days. As with “gay marriage”, no amount of juxtaposition of two contradictory ideas can effect their harmonization.

Palin Helps Romney Win Alaska

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania
Mitt Romney has a powerful ally in his effort to win the Republican nomination: Sarah Palin, who told a Fox News reporter last night that she voted for Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich got 1,834 votes in the Alaska caucuses, giving the former House Speaker 14.2% of the vote, good for a fourth-place finish behind third-place finisher Ron Paul (3,105 votes, 24%), runner-up Rick Santorum (3,762 votes, 29%) and winner Romney (4,225, 32.6%).

Gingrich also placed fourth Tuesday in caucuses in North Dakota (962 votes, 8.5%) and Idaho (940 votes, 2.1%), and the primaries in Vermont (4,608 votes, 8.1%) and Massachusetts (16,756 votes, 4.6%). Gingrich placed third in Ohio (14.6%), Tennessee (24%), and Oklahoma (27.5%).

Gingrich’s vote total in Alaska was more than four times as large as Romney’s 463-vote margin over Santorum. In Ohio, Gingrich’s third-place total (175,375) was 16.7 times larger than Romney’s 10,508-vote margin over Santorum.

In related news, Texas Gov. Rick Perry — who quit the presidential race Jan. 19 and endorsed Gingrich — was still on the ballot in Ohio, as was former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who dropped out Jan. 16 and endorsed Romney. Between them, Perry and Huntsman got 13,843 votes in Tuesday’s Ohio primary.

UPDATE: This post seems to have stirred some anger from people who think that my summary of Neutral Objective Facts was intended as a personal disparagement of Sarah Palin.

Of course, I would have enthusiastically supported Governor Palin, had she seen fit to run for president — see my coverage of her Labor Day speech in New Hampshire — but she decided against it. Another source of anger about this post was expressed by my young friend Jamie:

How come you hate Newt so much?

I replied in the comments, but given the rage reaction this post seems to have provoked, I’ll quote my reply here:

I don’t “hate” him, Jamie. But as a presidential candidate, Newt is utterly implausible. There is simply no way in hell a twice-divorced Republican, married to his former mistress — with whom he had an extramarital affair in the midst of the Clinton impeachment scandal — is going to be elected president of the United States.
Not going to happen. Period.
Gingrich’s rhetorical skills are admirable, but his biography makes him unelectable. This is just the reality of politics, and people who would like to ignore Newt’s biography are simply deluded.
It’s not a matter of policy or ideology. I don’t accuse Newt or his supporters of being insufficiently conservative. They are, however, insufficiently realistic about what it takes to succeed in presidential politics, and their admiration for Newt the Great Debater is blinding them to the unavoidable obstacle to Gingrich’s candidacy. Newt is wasting time and money (and his supporters are wasting their votes) on a campaign that was doomed from the outset.
These are, I assert, Neutral Objective Facts. You may dispute the facts, but I guarantee you that Newt Gingrich will not win the GOP nomination.
Not this year. Not ever.

This is my summary of what is, rather than my personal opinion of what ought to be, and I understand that many people wish that Gingrich’s debate skills were sufficient to offset the liabilities of his biography, but they’re not.

It seems that the online world has become a place where we are so accustomed to people expressing opinions that we have become prone to regard simple statements of fact —e.g., “Newt Gingrich will never be elected president, nor nominated by the Republican Party for that office” — as if they were merely opinions, which might be argued out of existence.

Having supported a lot of long-shot underdogs over the years, I recognize why people might vote for a completely hopeless candidate like Newt. But when the hopelessness was so obvious before his campaign ever began, it ill behooves Newt’s supporters to disparage the motives of those who are guilty of no sin more grievous than stating Neutral Objective Facts.

10:55 EST  As I’m about to get some rest, Santorum clings to a ~2,500 vote margin. However, the message here is this: Americans love an underdog. Rick Santorum’s clear, genuine communication hearkens back to George W. Bush’s unfeigned character. Just about everything Romney has said thus far this campaign has seemed feigned. Maybe fellow Mormon Glenn Beck could give Mitt some authenticity lessons.

 10:10 EST Karl Rove won’t let Fox call Ohio for Santorum, due to large counties that are not fully in. Santorum has a 12K buffer. Anticipate Romney to close, but not clear he’ll close enough.

10:07 EST Gov. Palin on Fox. She points out that Romney’s just not generating voter enthusiasm. However, conservatives are going to fall in behind the nominee. Gingrich is welcome, according to Palin. Competition is good. “Boo hoo” on those arguing for less competition, she says. It doesn’t make sense for anyone to drop out, she thinks.

He spoke of an “enthusiasm gap” with Romney, who has outspent Santorum 6-to-1 in advertising in Ohio, and yet Romney will count himself lucky to win narrowly in Ohio. Brabender said it is important not only to look at who wins, but who places second. He suggested that outside of Georgia, Gingrich is unlikely to win anywhere else tonight, and will place third in many states. They are playing Dean Martin’s music in the gym.

If You Think Mitt Romney Is ‘Electable’ …

. . . just wait. Maybe you’re right. But if you’re right, why are liberals so eager to have Romney as the Republican nominee? Maybe you think George Stephanopoulos is stupid?

Rick Santorum will hold a party tonight in Steubenville, Ohio, which he and his supporters hope will be a “Super Tuesday” victory celebration. Yet the latest polls indicate that Mitt Romney could win the Ohio Republican primary and, coming on the heels of Romney’s narrow win last week in Michigan, a Buckeye State victory might be enough to effectively clinch the nomination as the GOP Establishment’s “It’s His Turn” candidate. Whoever wins the Ohio primary, however, the result of today’s vote will be actual news, in contrast to the ridiculous ginned-up controversy that has swirled around Rush Limbaugh for the past week. And the story of how “SlutGate” became such an all-consuming affair is worth re-examining chiefly because it demonstrates the operational methodology of what the late Andrew Breitbart called the “Democrat-Media Complex.”
Go back to Saturday, Jan. 7, when ABC broadcast from Saint Anselm’s College in Manchester, N.H., a debate among six Republican presidential candidates, with George Stephanopoulos and Diane Sawyer as moderators. After the first commercial break in the broadcast, seemingly out of the blue, Stephanopoulos posed this question to Romney: “Senator Santorum has been very clear in his belief that the Supreme Court was wrong when it decided that a right to privacy was embedded in the Constitution. And following from that, he believes that states have the right to ban contraception.… Governor Romney, do you believe that states have the right to ban contraception? Or is that trumped by a constitutional right to privacy?” . . .

That’s from my American Spectator column today, which suggests the possibility that clueless Republicans have been manipulated like puppets on the media’s strings. And by “clueless Republicans,” I mean the 31%-38% of Ohio GOP primary voters who, according to the Real Clear Politics average, are willing to nominate the man Team Obama wants to face in November:

Mitt Romney could all but guarantee he’ll be the GOP presidential nominee by winning Ohio on Super Tuesday. …
“Ohio is a state that [Rick] Santorum cannot afford to lose,” said GOP strategist Alex Castellanos, who worked for Romney in 2008 but is neutral in this race. “If Santorum loses Ohio, it’ll be practically impossible to stop Romney.”

Exactly. For all intents and purposes, Ohio is the nomination, an unfortunate reality for which we could blame many factors, if we wanted to engage in hindsight recriminations. But there’s no point today in scapegoating the Republicans who have heretofore unwittingly aided the candidate they claimed to oppose by supporting Not Romneys who were clearly doomed from the outset.

Maybe Santorum can win tonight in Ohio, and we won’t have to contemplate the likelihood of a Romney-led debacle in November. And maybe, as I said, you think Mitt is “electable.” Maybe you think you’re smarter than George Stephanopoulos and his ABC News colleague Claire Shipman and their good buddy Jay Carney.

Why, however, are all these liberals convinced that Mitt is such a perfect choice as the Designated Republican Loser for November? I hesitate to endorse their cynical logic, but does anyone else remember how our Designated Republican Loser in 2008 grinned all the way to the nomination after winning “Super Tuesday” with a semi-secret tailwind of anti-Mormon prejudice?

Yeah, maybe I’m the only one who remembers that, or maybe not. Crack Emcee at The Macho Response doesn’t seem to care much for the theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and I link his post not to endorse such anti-LDS views, but rather to remind you what kind of stuff is out there.

Maybe all you Republicans who think you’re smarter than George Stephanopoulos are now saying to yourself, “Wait a minute! Are you trying to tell us that the Democrats would be willing to exploit such religious bigotry merely to win an election?”

Damn right they would — and will. If they can’t beat Romney with the “greedy Wall Street 1-percenter” class-warfare argument, the Democrats will not hesitate to Do Whatever It Takes to Win. Read more

How Feminism Actually Works

“The quintessential example of this is of course Ted Kennedy, whose career stands for the proposition that you can allegedly assault women and even leave a woman to die and be reelected for eternity so long as you vote the right way.
“That is to say, for all of the left’s bleeding-heart smugness about ‘good intentions,’ they’re remarkably bottom-line on this: So long as you support abortion and the rest of their packet on social issues, your actual intent when calling a woman a ‘mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick’ is irrelevant. It’s an irrebuttable presumption of feminism, a de facto ‘get out of misogyny free’ card.”

This goes toward confirming my repeated (and strangely controversial) analysis of feminism as a phenomenon deeply rooted in the radical-egalitarian worldview of the Left.

No matter how much historical fact I pile up in support of that analysis, Joy McCann will inevitably come back at me in a raging fury for having trod upon whatever sort of “mainstream feminism” she believes Christina Hoff Sommers has rescued from the leftist ash-heap. But the fact that the Left never stopped defending the contemptible Ted Kennedy — a man who was permitted to shamelessly abuse his inherited privilege simply because of his political posture as a defender of the downtrodden — and that Kennedy was especially a hero to feminists, would seem to demonstrate the validity of my analysis.

Feminism’s embrace of the vile Kennedy very much resembles the way the Left celebrates such monsters as Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, et al., who have ruthlessly slaughtered innumerable innocents in pursuit of the Dictatorship of the Proletariat. That the Left’s heroes butcher (actual) peasants and workers as an alleged means of advancing the (theoretical) rights of peasants and workers is one of those contradictions that the Left can never explain to the satisfaction of any honest observer.

The first successful Marxist revolution resulted, within 15 years, in the totalitarian dictatorship of Josef Stalin, whose bloody personal despotism exceeded every evil deed attributed to the tsarist regime during the entire history of the Romanov dynasty. The most loyal and heroic leaders of the Bolshevik revolution were marked down for especial humiliation by Stalin, forced to “confess” in show trials to crimes they had never committed, and then executed as “enemies of the people.” Meanwhile, many millions of peasants were liquidated in a terror-famine deliberately induced for the purpose of crushing rural resistance to the Stalinist agenda.

Western ap0logists for the Soviet experiment, even when they could bring themselves to admit the nightmare reality wrought by adherents of Marxist-Leninist philosophy, always insisted that these evils were not intrinsic to the philosophy. What was happening in Russia — or China, or North Korea, or Cambodia, etc. — was not “true socialism,” the apologists said, but was always explained away as the result of bad leadership or unfortunate historical circumstances.

However heinous might be the acts of flesh-and-blood socialists, their crimes could never be counted in the ledger against socialism as an egalitarian ideal.

You might have thought these idealists would have been disabused of their illusions in 1939 when Stalin made his deal with Hitler to divvy up Poland, and Communists in the West, who had spent years loudly clamoring for a “popular front” against fascism, suddenly began denouncing as “warmongers” anyone who proposed aiding Hitler’s adversaries. But the idealists learned nothing from that experience, and have learned nothing  in all the decades since.

Likewise with feminists. However cruel or selfish actual flesh-and-blood feminists might be, their misdeeds are never accepted as evidence of the wrongness of feminism as an ideal.

Ted Kennedy, Bob Packwood, Bill Maher, Alec Baldwin, Keith Olbermann — there is a long list of men who have been embraced as heroic defenders of “women’s rights,” but whose personal behavior toward women has ranged from exploitative to abusive to arguably criminal.

And is there no one in the feminist movement who will admit that the deaths of 40 million innocents — aborted babies whose historical misfortune it was to be conceived in The Age of Choice — is rather a steep price to pay for “equality”? Or are we not supposed to blink at this ghastly carnage, once it has been draped in the sacred mantle of “women’s rights”?

Never mind, I guess. Start talking like that and they’ll write you off as a religious extremist, even while they continue offering up their bloody sacrifices at the smoldering altar of Moloch where they gather to sing worshipful hymns of praise to their idol, Equality.

We are still two months away from National Offend a Feminist Week, but it is perhaps not too early to offer this definition:

Misogynist: A man who disagrees with a feminist.
