KaplanGate: Is the Washington Post Covering Up Its Own Financial Scandal?

Rusty Weiss at Accuracy in Media examines the relationship between the Washington Post and Kaplan, a lucrative for-profit education firm owned by the Post‘s parent corporation:

[T]here is a longstanding history of allegations of fraudulent practices, with hundreds of millions of dollars of profits diverted to Kaplan executives. Perhaps it’s also Kaplan’s generation of such profit on the backs of poor students and returning war veterans, preying on their vulnerabilities only to later reward them with degrees of questionable value, massive student-loan debt, and little employment opportunity. Perhaps it is Kaplan’s curious hiring of lobbyists to influence legislation at the state and federal levels, including a former Obama staffer, Anita Dunn, just as the heat was being turned up on for-profit colleges to rein in out-of-control practices.

Ziegler: Breitbart Thought Matt Drudge Was ‘In the Tank’ for Obama in 2008

In a Wednesday talk-radio appearance, conservative filmmaker John Ziegler said that the late Andrew Breitbart told him that during the 2008 presidential election campaign, Matt Drudge altered content on his famous Drudge Report site in such a way that Breitbart believed Drudge was “in the tank” for Barack Obama.

Interviewed by Chris Daniel on California’s KMJ 580 AM, Ziegler said Breitbart, who for years served as an assistant editor at the Drudge Report, had privately confided that his efforts to post negative articles about Obama at the popular site were blocked by Drudge.

“Matt Drudge was totally in the tank for Obama, and he blocked Andrew Breitbart from doing anything about it,” said Ziegler, who directed the documentary film Media Malpractice about the 2008 election. “Andrew told me about this. The evidence is overwhelming, and I can and will prove it.”

Breitbart “had determined that Drudge was in the tank, that every time [Breitbart] put something up that was anti-Obama that Matt Drudge would at least move it down, if not take it off entirely, which he hardly ever did to Andrew,” Ziegler told Daniels in an exclusive interview Wednesday. “And then specifically the Reverend Wright story was completely muted because of Matt Drudge.”

Ziegler has posted an article on his Media Malpractice site detailing these allegations. Breitbart died last week of a heart attack at age 43.

Bill Quick and some people are arguing past each other on an important linguistic/cultural point:

Are you guys really this dense, or is it just that you can’t see past your own blinders – lefties don’t like racist terminology and usage, so you think you have to approve it, or pretend that it isn’t racist?
You have a right to say any dumbass thing you wish to – but you don’t have any right to a free pass on it based on some of the screwiest reasoning I’ve ever run across in supposedly intelligent people.
“Jig is up” is a usage of “jig” that is related to dancing, so naturally there is no possible occasion when the context of its usage could also have racist overtones even though it also has a vile and racist meaning.” Are you even listening to yourselves?

I have not been arguing that other people are incapable of re-purposing the symbol ‘jig’ to have racist connotations. And, certainly, with an imaginable suffix, it’s a racial epithet.

The point I’ve been getting at, and one of the major themes of Protein Wisdom for probably longer than I’ve read it, is that we are in an ideological war, and that this is precisely the sort of tool employed against us: taking a symbol, re-working the meaning, and then using that re-worked meaning as a weapon to beat us down.

Such is evil, demonic, and a ploy of Satan himself. We should (a) refrain from doing it ourselves, and (b) confront anyone using the tactic and say ‘No’.

Let jigs be jigs. And let crackers be something put on soup. And let me cheerfully laugh, and de-escalate the situation, if somebody uses ‘cracker’ on me to mean otherwise. For hyper-sensitivity, too, like turning up the gain on a control circuit amplifier, is still another de-stabilization technique of the Left.

Michele Bachman stands her ground against Piers Morgan. She stands judged as being ‘judgemental’ for daring to assert that the Postmodern narrative is wrong. But of whom? Doesn’t judging involve, you know, a case, i.e. a context with actual, specific people?

Loving my relatives and friends (that happen to be gay) does not, cannot constitute an endorsement of their bad ideas. Stating that I disagree with ideas they espouse is not a judgement of my relatives and friends (that happen to be gay).

This conflation of people and ideas as a form of rhetorical judo is utterly diabolical. If only Piers knew of the New Tone!

How Many GOP Delegates in Oz?

An important question, because Newt is not in Kansas anymore:

The Gingrich campaign is cancelling all Kansas events to focus on Mississippi and Alabama. KS caucuses Sat. Miss, Ala primaries Tues.

That’s via Twitchy, a new social-media site that I learned about via Bob Belvedere at Camp of the Saints, who got it from Michelle Malkin, who has hired many excellent people to run it. But never mind the celebration — back to the news, via the Washington Post:

Newt Gingrich is canceling campaign events scheduled for Kansas at the end of the week to shore up support in the Deep South. The former House speaker plans to pour his time and resources into Alabama and Mississippi.
“Everything between Spartanburg all the way to Texas, those all need to go for Gingrich,” said campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond.

Also more at The Hill. There’s trouble in Newtland, boys and girls. There are 40 delegates at stake Saturday in Kansas, but Newt is forced to forfeit that fight in order to defend his “home turf” in the Deep South. Why? Because Rick Santorum’s wins Tuesday in Oklahoma and Tennessee showed that Gingrich might be more vulnerable in the South than he had previously suspected.

Gingrich’s string of third- and fourth-place finishes Tuesday have not only marked him as the weakest candidate in the field, but have prompted questions about his motives for continuing his campaign. In an excellent post at Commentary, Bethany Mandel asks:

What price tag does Gingrich put on the free publicity he’s garnering while he remains in the race? Is it high enough to forfeit what he’s claimed is the Republicans’ only chance at victory in November?

Once people start talking smack like that about your campaign, the fundraising tends to dry up and — no matter how determined you may be to carry on — the financial issues become problematic. Meanwhile, Santorum’s starting to close the money gap with Mitt Romney:

So far in 2012, for every $1 that Santorum has raised, Romney has raised $1.31 ($13.5 million for Santorum, $17.7 million for Romney). For every $1 that Santorum raised in February alone, Romney raised $1.28 ($9 million for Santorum, $11.5 million for Romney). Moreover, February was not Romney’s biggest fundraising month, while Santorum raised more in February than he had in all previous months of his campaign combined.

Team Mitt says it would take “an act of God” for Romney to lose the nomination. I’ll keep an eye out for plagues of locusts, rivers of blood and, quite possibly, another earthquake in Vanuatu.

UPDATE: Holy Freaking Crap! No sooner had I posted this than I was informed on Twitter by Steve Eggleston that there has just been a 5.1 earthquake in Vanuatu. Watch out, Mitt!

Joe The Plumber, Coming To A Congress Near You?

Samuel “Joe” Wurzelbacher, an earlier recipient of a Fatwah Of Love (FOL), from the Left, will go against Marcy Kaptur in a new Ohio district this fall.

Wurzelbacher hasn’t exactly been embraced by the Republican establishment, largely because GOP officials regard the northeastern Ohio-based 9th District as tilting heavily Democratic and an unlikely November pickup. The National Republican Congressional Committee hasn’t bothered to add Wurzelbacher to its “Young Guns” program for top recruits. After Kaptur beat Kucinich, “Joe the Plumber” will now face the veteran Democrat in the fall.

Yeah, Joe can be relied upon to be even less disciplined than Alan West in his approach to dealing with our Ruling Class Overlords. Go, Joe!
