Good to Be Back Home

It was cold here in the hills of western Maryland last night and it would be insanely expensive to keep the house comfortably warm with electric space heaters. Therefore we snuggled up: Me, my wife and our two youngest children slept four in a bed.

We woke up to find that the number had been raised to five by the addition of Marley the Dog, who had crawled into bed during the night and was sleeping across our feet. We didn’t complain, as the extra body heat was welcome.

What can we say about Charles Johnson’s increasingly desperate efforts to simulate relevance?

We will now examine (a) what happened, (b) what Charles Johnson wants us to believe happened, and (c) what the discrepancy between (a) and (b) tells us about Charles Johnson’s pathetic idiocy.

OK, what happened: Fox News posted a story on its Web site about the death of singer Whitney Houston. This story attracted worldwide attention, and it appears that many people commenting in that (unmoderated) Internet venue said very ugly things about the recently deceased singer, making cruel remarks about her notorious struggles with drug addiction and employing racial epithets.

It now appears that Fox has closed commenting on the story and removed all the previous comments. However, as of 9 p.m. Sunday the story had been shared 2,400 times on Twitter and “liked” 14,000 times on Facebook,  suggesting that it quickly reached a very broad readership.

Was this particular Fox story linked by Drudge or other major Web news aggregators? Were similarly derogatory comments were posted on Whitney Houston’s death at other news sites with unmoderated commenting policies?

I just throw those questions out there, as alternatives to the Charles Johnson Unified Field Theory of Every Damned Thing in the World:

There’s a real sickness running rampant in the right wing; the Fox News comment thread on Whitney Houston’s death is yet another disgusting deluge of outright racism.

“Right wing” + “Fox News” = RAAAAACISM!

Question: Do we know anything about the ideology or political affiliations of the people who left the scurrilous comments on the Fox News site?

Answer: No, we do not.

Once an item goes “viral” online, you cannot possibly generalize about the people commenting in an unmoderated format. For all we know, Fox News was the victim of a targeted effort by the Left — a category that arguably now includes Little Green Footballs — to create the appearance that Fox viewers are racists.

LGF’s Kilgore Trout once attempted such a dishonest trick aimed at Hot Air, and while I cannot state as a fact that the LGF crew is up to its old agitprop trickery, neither can I rule out the possibility. What I can say with certainty is that Johnson has clearly attempted to smear Fox News (and by extension, the “right wing”) by blaming them for these comments.

As to the attitudes reflected in the comments cited by LGF: Lots of white people in pop music — e.g., Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Keith Moon of The Who, John Bonham of Led Zeppelin — have died as a consequence of substance abuse. Anecdotal examples are not proof of an ethnic trait, and even if statistical evidence demonstrates a correlation between a behavioral trait and an ethnic group, we should be cautious about asserting any particular axis of causality.

The Irish have a reputation for alcoholism, and perhaps deservedly so. But it is very difficult to say, for example, that stupid Micks are prone to drunkenness (a) because they’re Micks or (b) because they’re stupid.

Furthermore, while it might be observed that Ireland has produced a lot of stupid drunks but precious few nuclear physicists, if we generalize too broadly from that example, stupid drunken Micks might take exception to our observations about the correlation between the stupidity and drunkenness of his type. And then some smelly ignorant Paddy O’Sheeney at the end of the bar will likely give us a demonstration of the tendency toward brutish violence for which that damned race of wretched drunkards are so universally notorious.

Therefore, I urge you to refrain from expressing offensive ethnic stereotypes about the Irish. However, you can insult the Frogs without fear, as the French are most famous for the cowardice of their men and the promiscuity of their women.

HAGERSTOWN, Maryland
Back home from CPAC with about 300 business cards, two days’ growth of beard, and a voice hoarse from rocking out with Chris Cassone at Friday’s “Unsustainable Bar Tab” reception. Also, I’ve got beaucoups of photos and videos that I was unable to upload during the conference due to frustration with bandwidth issues. (Wombat suggests that it was my equipment rather than the WiFi connection that sucked. However, it is a curious fact that as soon as I hooked up the trusty Toshiba Satellite to my home network, it worked perfectly.)

Smitty previously noted that Rick Santorum has taken his first lead in a national poll — you can see the full breakdown at Public Policy Polling (PDF file) — and I would further suggest that you keep an eye on polls in Michigan over the next week or so. The current Real Clear Politics average has Santorum in fourth place, but all of the polls included in the RCP average date back to late January/early February, before Newt Gingrich’s embarrassment in Nevada, and before Santorum’s Tuesday hat trick in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri.

Sources close to the Santorum campaign say they’re going to challenge Romney in Michigan, which may seem like a kamikaze mission in Romney’s home state, but Santorum believes his message can win over blue-collar voters in the industrial Midwest — a belief that would appear to have been ratified in Minnesota and Missouri. Although the odds are long, Santorum will campaign hard in Michigan, which holds its primary Feb. 28, knowing that if he can upset Mitt there . . . well, game on.

Money? Extrapolating from early reports and cryptic hints from sources close to the campaign, I believe Santorum raised $5 million online last week, and when I talked Saturday morning to a top official with Santorum’s direct mail team, his comment was, “I can’t wait until Monday.” The boost Santorum got from last week’s hat-trick would obviously take a few days to produce a response from folks whose contributions involve checks sent by snail mail, and his team expects a huge influx of such contributions to come pouring in Monday and continuing through the week. A little nap with the World’s Youngest Blogger after church on Sunday. Frequent commenter and very old friend Jeff had dropped Da Tech Guy by somewhere around midnight. We rolled out around 0630 to get Pete to Mass at the Basilica, while I went to my heretical little Baptist house of worship, bringing up #Occupy in the context of Romans 13 in Sunday school.

Rick Santorum Takes First National Lead

Santorum leads Mitt Romney 38 percent to 23 percent in the new poll, while Gingrich is in third place with 17 percent.

The two crucial points here are:

  1. Keep up the doubt about Rick Santorum. We must accept whatever our Ruling Class Overlords tell us. Pay no attention to these numbers.
  2. Continue to heap abuse upon Stacy McCain. He likes it. His quest for recognition of his skill and acumen is purely superficial; and attempt to hide his masochism.

ProEnglish Is Sensible

It is one thing to celebrate diversity; to enjoy and study foreign languages and cultures. It is quite another to weaken the cohesiveness of the country, decrease efficiency, and bloat bureaucracies with government positions that add no economic value to the country.

I enjoyed a short chat at CPAC with Robert Vandervoort of ProEnglish, who touts Rep. Steve King’s bill to address the issue.
