Is It Really Just Mitt, Or Is The Entire GOP Necropolis Facing Rejection?

by Smitty

Byron York in The Examiner is worth a full read:

Romney stages perfect events. For example, on the eve of the primary, Romney’s rally in North Charleston was perfect from a production point of view: stage just right, big flags, big Romney signs, smooth introductions from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, all topped off by a showy entrance by Romney, who arrived in his big campaign bus that drove right into the room.
It was perfect in every sense but engaging with the voters. Romney’s stump speech was a clipped — some would say dumbed down — list of generalities, concluding with this: “I love this land, I love its Constitution, I revere its founders, I will restore those principles, I will get America back to work, and I’ll make sure that we remain the shining city on the hill.” Romney offered his supporters very little to chew on. In this primary race, voters are hungry for substance, and Romney didn’t give them much.

So, the media and GOP-elite anointed candidate is 1 for 3, and the media darling, Huntsman, is long gone. Sure, the Tea Party favorites like Bachmann, Perry and Cain are also extinguished, but what does that 1 for 3 record say for all of the Really Smart Guys of the Rove set?

I submit that maybe it isn’t just Mitt getting the Trump treatment here. Rather, faced with an informed set of voters, it’s the entire GOP elite that is looking as chumpy as BHO. It’s not just Romney looking a teeny bit cannibalistic over the ‘shining city’ phrase. This GOP had better wake up and join the Tea Party, STAT.

Meanwhile, over at Power Line, Scott Johnson doesn’t see the positives:

As of this morning, Romney’s campaign is reminiscent of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign. She had the air of inevitability and the financial wherewithal for a long national campaign. By contrast with Newt, however, Obama also had an excellent campaign team with a superior strategic vision of the way through the nominating process. I find it hard to believe that Newt can improvise his way to the nomination. But to quote Mitt this past Thursday: “Maybe!”
Romney has been helped along so far by the division of the conservative Republican vote among the various conservative non-Romneys in the race. Santorum will persist, but conservatives harboring the non-Romney animus will coalesce around Newt. To the extent that Newt has now emerged as the conservative alternative to Mitt, Mitt has a serious race on his hands; we have a race on our hands.
What now? Newt seems to me an implausible presidential candidate. I thought he had exhausted his political capital among conservatives in a remarkably short period of time more than a decade ago. I was wrong. He is not a popular guy among the American people, who already have a strong impression of him. Americans view him even less favorably than they do Obama. I understand the result last night, but it’s hard for me to see how this story has a happy ending — for us, if not for Newt.

Of the four GOP men standing, three of them have variously reached out to the Tea Parties. Paul has always postured himself as the fiscal responsibility outsider, Santorum is the everyman who does his own taxes and can’t afford a full sweater, and Newt is the master of forgotten history.

So instead of bemoaning the death of The Ruling Class, country club GOP knobs represented by Mitt, let’s just admit they are done, cut off the rot, and have the GOP continue to re-connect with America.

I don’t grasp why this is so hard, other than forcing the Karl Roves of the world to wash their hands a bit more, but it can be done.

Update: Dondero at Libertarian Republican serves up the Mitt aftershock:What else would we expect Romney to say, exactly? “I went down to the pet store, got a small animal, and killed it with my bare hands in frustration.”

Update II: Legal Insurrection:

the hyperbole being expressed by Romney supporters in the media and inside the party has crossed over from argument to fearmongering.

Or is it the death wail of the GOP elite?

Update III: linked at Daily Pundit:

Would we had more intelligent men who can talk about and explain that history in clear, concise, compelling terms, and thereby bring the torch of liberty lit by our Founders and Framers in long-forgotten eras and places to a new set of hands better able to hold it aloft than the faltering claws of the anti-American gang currently waging war on every aspect of America.
Yes, America, ask what your birthright really is, what it truly means to be an American what sort of sacrifices were made by those who came before you to ensure that being an American has always meant you were better than any other nation of people ever to walk the face of this planet.

Our candidates have ultimately been a mirror of our own failings.

As I’ve admitted already, I did little more than vote, in my rational ignorance, until around January 2008, when Liberal Fascism went off with all the subtlety of a grenade.

Christine Pelosi: Supreme Court Decision Permits Corporations To Broadcast Legislation In The Radio Frequency Spectrum, Threatening Female Health

by Smitty

For heaven’s sake, lady, get an editor:

On this second anniversary of Citizens United, the court decision equating corporations with people, American women must join together to combat its nefarious effects on our lives and ourt[sic] families. In the past two years, Citizens United has allowed corporations to flood the airwaves and the corridors of power with anti-women legislation restricting women’s health, worker’s rights, and voting rights. We must fight back.

The Lefty butt-hurt over Citizen’s United can only be seen as a propaganda hedge against Obama’s defeat in November. In addition to the obligatory raaaaacism charge, the evil corporations with their Orbital Legislation Broadcast Lasers are going to blow away Barack, women, workers, and voting rights. Don’t you know.

As an American citizen, I think we are more threatened by Princess Pelosi herself. Past elected Democrats, unions are the next greatest threat. For those unaware, a union is a corporation without a product. Unions produce not-work, in a fashion similar to that of organized crime. The threat of not-work is used to extort dues from workers and benefits from companies. These monies and favors are then used to buy politicians in a non-virtuous cycle. In the Navy, we called a union a ‘mutiny’.

Besides unions, Hollywood is a bigger threat than corporate ads permitted by the Citizens United decision. It makes me angry to have an hour and a half of my life stolen by a bunch of anti-American, Communist drool buckets, so I don’t have specific complaints to offer. Yet I perceive that Hollywood has had an input into the confusion rampant in our society today.

In summary, Christine, expressions of free speech sponsored by corporations just really aren’t a big deal. Is it the words themselves, or the fact that you Lefty creeps can’t control them that you find so worrisome?

Aside: or is this just a subtle attempt to make Meghan McCain look  a genius by comparison?

Is The Propaganda Business Flattening?

by Smitty

via Althouse

Angry over the Obama administration’s siding against SOPA and PIPA, [Former Senator Chris] Dodd says openly that the money the Democratic party regularly counts on Hollywood for might not be there this election cycle. One view is that Hollywood considers that it bought something very specific with it’s money, and it’s angry it’s not getting it. Should Obama be worried about this? Perhaps not. The guys from Freakanomics say that our assumption that money is the most important factor in deciding elections is a fallacy.

I’ll join the schadenfreude chorus on this one. It’s really hard to tell which has more static head: the Democrat party, or Hollywood.

Of course, if history rhymes, the second Obama administration will nationalize Hollywood. So that we can not drive to the movies in cars we’ve bought but don’t receive. There, we can buy tickets to movies we’ve already paid for that elaborate upon our stupidity.

What Does This Sentence Mean?

“Base hostility will now be exacerbated by Mitt Romney’s backers now undoubtedly making a conscious effort to prop up Rick Santorum to shut down Newt Gingrich.”
— Erick Erickson, Red State

Last night I found myself talking to Caleb Howe, who said how much he hated the argument that a vote for Candidate X is actually a vote for Candidate Y. You see how Erickson deploys exactly that argument in claiming that supporters of Rick Santorum are closet Romneyites.

This would have been news to the Santorum supporters who gathered last night at the Citadel to hear the man they think should be the next president of the United States. There were a lot of home-schoolers and pro-lifers and national security hawks at the Santorum event, and I wonder what they would have made of arguments like this:

“People are mad as hell they are about to be stuck with another boring, moderate, uninspiring choice that has at best a 50/50 shot at losing to the worst president since Carter. They are flocking to Newt not because they think he’s a great guy, but because right now, he’s the only one fighting for conservatism . . .”
— Erick Erickson, Red State

Really? “The only one fighting for conservatism”? Somebody needs to tell this to Newt Gingrich, who praised Rick Santorum in his victory speech Saturday night. And somebody also needs to tell Rick Santorum, who released his Sunday and Monday campaign schedule for Florida a half-hour after the polls closed in South Carolina:

Sunday, January 22:

2:00pm ET:  Senator Santorum will hold a campaign rally at Wings Plus in Coral Springs, FL.
Location: Wings Plus
9880 West Sample Road
Coral Springs, FL

8:00pm ET: Senator Santorum will appear on “Huckabee” on FOX News.

Monday, January 23:

1:30pm ET: Senator Santorum will hold a “Faith, Family and Freedom” Town Hall in Lady Lake, FL.
Location: American Legion Hall
699 East Lady Lake Road
Lady Lake, FL

9:00pm ET:  Senator Santorum will participate in the NBC News/National Journal debate in Tampa, FL.
Location: University of South Florida
Tampa, FL

While nobody has appointed me the Omniscient Arbiter, authorized to write articles titled “What It Means,” I can summarize what one of Santorum’s supporters told me last night about what he expects: Newt and Mitt are going to attempt to destroy each other, and all the while Santorum will keep on campaigning, arguing that he is the “conviction conservative,” steadily accruing support from those conservatives who don’t like either Newt or Mitt.

The Santorum supporter who told me that is a fine young Christian man, and so I did not bluntly express to him what I see as the basic problem with the Gingrich campaign: Sooner or later, people will figure out that Newt is a selfish, arrogant asshole.

And people don’t like selfish, arrogant assholes.

BHO SOU: “Building An Economy `That’s Built To Last` [Until 07 November, 2012]”

by Smitty

The Hill relays, with some help in brackets by me, the news that #OccupyResoluteDesk used the weekly address to sound even more ominous, this time about

asing tourist visa rules to attract more foreign tourists, as the latest example he has taken to boost the U.S. economy.
It was also the latest example where Obama acted without Congress as part of the White House’s “We can’t Wait [to sieze more power]” campaign.
“As I’ve said before, I will continue to work with Congress, states, and leaders in the private sector to find ways to move this country forward [past the cliff edge],” Obama said. “But where they can’t act or won’t act, I will [deftly shifting from a Nicholson Joker to a Ledger Joker in my inimitable fashion].

Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas throws down a gauntlet in advance:I hope that Rep. Alan West gives the GOP response to the SOU, and I hope that West goes completely medieval.
Hot Air notes that BHO’s 2011 Gallup numbers really suck some pond water.

We’ll know more about that as this year unwinds, but unless there is a dramatic economic improvement, those numbers aren’t coming up.

I don’t know about actual economic improvement, but I certainly expect to have something quantitatively eased in the back door of Wall Street, to pump up the Dow like a shot of Botox in Nancy Pelosi, in time for maximum November benefit.

‘Churchill’ Gingrich?

by Smitty

IBD:

A great debater. Politically polarizing. Prone to great error, but also prone to spectacular success. Steeped in history. Politically brilliant. Unorthodox. Audacious.
All these qualities were once used to describe Winston Churchill. Today, you might use the same words to describe Newt Gingrich. Sound absurd? Not when you think about it.

Read the whole thing. The two points unmade in the article are that NY-23 would be Newt’s Gallipoli, and a tough pill for Tea Party types to swallow in supporting him.

The real humor would be in the presidential debates, when Newt starts quoting Churchill at length to the blatantly anti-British #OccupyResoluteDesk. The thought of watching BHO’s eyes narrow and jaw tighten makes one smile.
