It is altogether fitting that we should celebrate the day of the Declaration, but who among us celebrates the dates of the great battles of the Revolution? How many even know the dates of Trenton, Saratoga, Brandywine, Kings Mountain and Yorktown? Wasn’t it true that the independence declared at Philadelphia was actually won by the common American soldiers who slogged through the mud and shivered in the snow and braved the British guns?

We know the names of Jefferson, Adams, Hancock and others who signed the Declaration — eloquently pledging their lives, liberty and sacred honor to the cause of independence — but independence was won by the courage and endurance of ineloquent men whose names we don’t know at all.

Probably a lot of them were named Smith. And also “Tommy Atkins.”

Yes, makin’ mock o’ uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an’ they’re starvation cheap . . .

An’ it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please;

Such are my thoughts on this Independence Day, while I sit at home with my family, and Smitty is deployed on the other side of the world, while his pregnant wife in Virginia prays for his safe return.

A New York man died Sunday while participating in a ride with 550 other motorcyclists to protest the state’s mandatory helmet law.
Police said Philip A. Contos, 55, hit his brakes and his motorcycle fishtailed. Contos was sent over the handlebars of his 1983 Harley Davidson and hit his head on the pavement.
He was pronounced dead at the hospital

I’m so glad that these Progressives are the smart ones, and I am the knuckle-dragger forced to rely on them to understand matters. The obfuscated Smitty approach to puzzling out why the Founders bothered with enumerating the powers of Congress, when GWICNP (pronounced ‘gwick-nip’) was all that needed to be said, clearly indicate why people like me should be whisked off to places like this.

E.J. Dionne can read the Declaration of Independence, whereas you are too stupid to do so for yourself — but don’t worry: E.J. will tell you what it really means, in his newspaper column.

Although you are too stupid to understand the Declaration of Independence (which is why E.J. thinks you need him to tell you what it means), perhaps you are not too stupid to understand why E.J.’s newspaper column isn’t really popular or influential.

That’s exactly 1,337 words, whereas E.J. Dionne’s column is 747 words. Most readers will find the Declaration perfectly comprehensible. E.J.’s column is equally comprehensible in declaring that all men are not created equal, and that’s why morons like us need liberal geniuses like E.J. to think for us, because we’re too stupid to think for ourselves.

Let me ask my fellow social conservatives a question: If you could figure out a sneaky but legal way to kneecap a left-wing organization, would you do it? And I’m not sure this is merely a hypothetical question.

2008 Madison Pride A Low-Key Affair
Madison — It was “Back To Basics” for this year’s Madison Pride with hundreds rather than thousands showing up for the 19th Annual Rally and March at the Capitol. Sunny skies and a few protesters greeted slightly over 200 people at the 11 AM rally here July 20.
Keynote speaker Congressional Tammy Baldwin reminded the crowd of the purpose of the rally. “We’re here to nurture the next generation of LGBT leaders,’ Baldwin said. “We’re here to offer hope to all LGBT people and our allies, that full equality is within our reach.”
Following the rally the crowd marched around the Capitol building. The local chapter of Dykes on Bikes added their thunder on the adjacent streets.
Most of the marchers then headed for a potluck picnic at Brittingham Park, which featured music by The Cowboy and the Frenchmen, appearances by various members of Lexi Ravyn Productions, team members from Madison LGBT sports leagues and other local talents.
Madison’s stripped-down pride celebration followed the discovery last March that Madison Pride owed thousands of dollars in unpaid bills for their 2006 and 2007 events. The board removed treasurer [NAME REDACTED] and began an investigation of the organization’s finances. No misconduct has been reported to date and no charges against [NAME REDACTED] have been filed. Organizers estimated they spent about $200 to put on this year’s event. Other area gay venues and groups – most notably Club 5, WOOF’s, A Room Of One’s Own book store and IndieQueer – sponsored parties, a boat cruise, a “Queer Spelling Bee” and other special events to fill the celebration void.

Show of hands: Who wants to pin a medal on “Name Redacted”? Because you gotta admit, that was pure genius.

Let it be noted that . . . er, sex industry professionals can indeed be victims of crime, but I’d hate to be the District Attorney presenting a case like this to a jury: “Yeah, she was a part-time hooker, and the defense is going to be able to show that the plaintiff told detectives a half-dozen lies, but you should believe her when she says that the wealthy and powerful Frenchman committed forcible sexual assault against her.”

I’m sure feminists will complain that this is unfair. But complaints about unfairness won’t change the fact that, if the facts are as the Post states, it would be extremely difficult to get a jury to convict DSK.
