Asking the Right Question

“Why are you apologizing all the time?” Sarah Palin asked her Israeli hosts, inspiring admiration and many further thoughts from Professor William Jacobson.
Oh, No They Didn’t!

But, alas, oh, yes they did: NPR let an unfunny Muslim “comedian” take a dishonest cheap shot at Michelle Malkin.
No matter how often we see it, there is always at least a slight shock when the oh-so-tolerent liberals take off the mask and reveal their sadistic tendencies.
Wolcottism
Posted on | March 21, 2011 | 16 Comments
Someone wrote a brief Onion-style satire in which residents of New Orleans expressed dismay that “Japanese were missing a golden opportunity” for looting in the wake of the tsunami there.
Little Miss Attila linked that without comment.
This compelled James Wolcott to cite Attila as an example of conservatives “transmitting in their usual racial code.”
Really.
You have to marvel at the extraordinary effort it took for a Vanity Fair columnist to reach such a farfetched conclusion about a blogger he’s never met, on the basis of her having linked a humorous item that ends with a reference to Charlie Sheen and the Wisconsin teachers union.
Wolcott does such things all the time. Evidently too busy to trundle his decrepit ass anywhere to do any actual reporting, he sits there, carping and sneering at, inter alia, Sarah Palin and her admirers.
It’s a newsworthy event when Wolcott manages to make it so far as a Manhattan bar, where all he can think about is “the psychopathology of certain rightwing blogs, especially those whose hosts have turned bitter and bristling with recriminations.” He’s obsessed with us, yet it is we who are diagnosed as suffering from psychopathology.
Project much?
In fact, nowadays Wolcott is America’s most eminent former TV critic moonlighting as a foreign-policy expert, approvingly quoting (with emphasis) Financial Times columnist Max Hastings: “The most powerful single strand in opinion throughout the Muslim world is bitterness about America’s continuing support for Israeli oppression of the Palestinians.”
The Jews! They’re oppressing Palestinians! And perhaps also secretly plotting to get James Wolcott bounced from his sinecure as a Vanity Fair contributing editor! Reckon that’s why Wolcott threw in an extra jab at “neocons” like Max Boot?
Note to Graydon Carter: Play him or trade him. Either put Wolcott on the next plane to Benghazi — send him where the action is, to do some honest-to-God journalism — or else cut him loose. To keep him there in Manhattan, festering like an infected boil, is ruining the man.
Does Mitt Romney Agree With Bill Maher?
Posted on | March 21, 2011 | 10 Comments
In case you missed it, hate-filled HBO “star” Bill Maher one-upped his own most tasteless anti-Palin slurs:
Question: Has Mitt Romney ever spoken out forcefully in Gov. Palin’s defense? Because some people have noticed the crickets chirping:
Joseph Fein, a party insider from the Los Angeles area, said some people feel they can’t trust Romney.
“Where was he when Michael Steele was being attacked?” Fein said. “Where was he when Sarah Palin was attacked? Romney not standing up was noticed.”
That’s from a Politico story about the notable paucity of 2012 contenders at the California GOP convention, and that quote is from our buddy at the Valley of the Shadow blog, who covered the convention all weekend.
The Triumph of Raaaaacism: Liberals Get in Touch With Their Inner Teabagger

First it was Michael Moore and now they’re all piling on. Ralph Nader says Obama should be impeached for war crimes, Josh Marshall says the president’s Libya policy is “a mess, poorly conceived, ginned up by folks with their own weird agendas,” and Andrew Sullivan . . .
Well, frankly, I’m beginning to feel a twinge of sympathy for Sully. Look at how all these smug people are cruelly mocking him:
You were played. I told you so at the time. The whole hope-and-change thing was an obvious con, and you were among the rubes who fell for it anyway. And yeah, I’m rubbing it in.
Sully’s perplexed and depressed and is clearly in desperate need of something to cheer him up. Read more
What Part of ‘Asserting Private Knowledge’ Is So Hard to Understand?
Posted on | March 21, 2011 | 126 Comments
One of the most dangerous things a journalist can do, in terms of libel, is to claim to have private knowledge of wrongdoing by someone. That is to say, don’t assert that a person is a drunkard or a wife-beater because of what you were told or claim to have witnessed privately. Unless you’ve got police reports of the person’s arrests for DUI or assault, making such an assertion in print exposes you to a world of legal woes.
Which brings us, alas, to Patterico’s long-smoldering blog war against Jeff Goldstein of Protein Wisdom. It flared up again when, as chronicled by PW commenters, Patterico made these assertions:
[N]obody has sent *me* any cease and desist letters lately. I’m told Jeff can’t say the same. . . .
To be clear: I have not seen the e-mails in question. I was merely told there were many of them, written at odd hours of the morning, they were rants, a letter was sent threatening action if they didn’t stop, they continued, but (i hear today for the first time) stopped soon after.
Not making it up. That’s what I was told. Some on the phone and some in e-mails. . . .
I am trying to persuade the person to release the e-mails and the cease and desist letter. The lawyer who sent it is apparently not thrilled about being dragged into this and is upset at me for having said anything. No decision will be made until after consultation with the lawyer tomorrow.
We have no idea what this is about, if it’s about anything at all. For his part, Jeff says he thinks he may be victim of identity theft and says he has received no cease-and-desist letter. But what manner of madness could have caused Patterico to make these comments? Read more
Rule 5 Sunday: Sweater Puppy Madness!

Having only today escaped from the friendly (but Intertubeless) confines of the local VA Medical Center, I am bemused to see that many of this week’s link submissions seem to revolve around the phrase cited above. Great minds thinking alike? Who knows? Maybe not, since Mind-Numbed Robot was Patient Zero of the Sweater Puppy Pandemic, followed mere minutes later by Three Beers Later. At this point, an odd temporal inversion caused this vintage video to appear before the latter post, followed in its turn by a Mamie Van Doren SweaterVision presentation. Last but certainly not least, Maggie’s Notebook presents Natalie Gulbis, who apparently wastes time on golf in between tasteful bikini outings, and the Kansas University cheerleaders, some of whom wear sweaters in a most pleasing manner.
Getting away from sweaters and their fillings for now, Fishersville Mike has news about Kaley Cuoco and her doings, with suitable illustration. Speaking of new movies, the POH diaries notes that Kate Beckinsale has one coming out as well.
Soylent Green has a hot babe in a cool straitjacket for your consideration, and quite the interesting spread for Feral Friday, to say nothing of these vernal vixens.
Speaking of things green, Nation of Cowards wishes to inform us that Karissa Shannon’s Bikini wishes us a happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Two birds, one stone: Jerseynut links back to ToM and celebrates Rule 5 simultaneously with this post on Khloe Kardashian.
Dustbury takes us back to the past and the prime of Miss Ann Sothern. Nice chassis, indeed! Also, the only funny line ever delivered during the Comedy Central Roasts and the gal what delivered it. Also, Chaz, the answer to Ms. Deschanel is always yes. How could you doubt it?
Proof Positive gets belated FMJRA credit for his link to last week’s Rule 5 Monday post before getting fresh Rule 5 cred with Maureen O’Hara and Gemma Atkinson
Who knew you could see NASCAR from the beach?
Because our trackback software apparently hates him, I make this feeble attempt to recognize Frequent Commenter & Linker Bob Belvedere by giving him the all-important cleanup spot in the lineup. This week, he treats us to Laura Richmond, NCAA Sweater Puppies, Leeann Tweeden of Red Eye, a fine collection of Rule 5 material, and finally, some St. Patrick’s Day Rule 5. Ladies and gentlemen, a hand for the master!
Thanks to all for their kind wishes regarding my recovery. Send your submissions for next week’s Rule 5 Sunday to Rule 5 Wombat.
SEIU Sued for ‘Harassment’
Posted on | March 20, 2011 | 6 Comments
Sodexo USA has filed the lawsuit in an attempt to halt the over-the-top harassment from SEIU, alleging that many of the acts are very serious and outside of the normal realm of union tactics, including acts of ” SEIU blackmail, vandalism, trespass, harassment, and lobbying law violations designed to steer business away from Sodexo USA and harm the company.” . . .
SEIU has been incessantly battering Sodexo since 2007, in its desire to unionize some of its nearly 400,000 employees, many of them hotel and food service workers. . . .

Read the whole thing at Big Government. Smitty has always said that a labor union is a mutiny awaiting its opportunity.
