HOLY COW! Republican AZ-7 Challenger McClung Now in ‘Dead Heat’ with Grijalva
Posted on | October 10, 2010 | 30 Comments
BOSTON — Just got back from Sean Bielat headquarters, where one volunteer said she’s starting to sense a “Scott Brown feeling” about the campaign against Barney Frank. Logged onto my e-mail and saw a tip to a Politico article about a race on the other side of the country:
Add Rep. Raul Grijalva to the growing list of Democratic worries this election season.
Party operatives say there’s increasing concern that the Arizona Democrat’s reelection bid could turn into a “sleeper” race for Republicans after Grijalva — responding to enactment of a tough new immigration law — called for an economic boycott of his own state amid a housing crisis and record unemployment.
Four Democratic sources from different parts of the country said that there is new attention to a race that was long considered in the bag.
And a recent poll, obtained by POLITICO, found that Grijalva and Republican challenger Ruth McClung, a real-life rocket scientist, were in a dead heat, even though Washington prognosticators have declared the deep-blue seat safely Democratic.
As they work to buttress their majority against a coming Republican storm, Democrats can ill afford to spend time or resources defending incumbents in seats where they should have a clear advantage. But the Grijalva seat potentially being in play is a sign of the increasingly expanding Republican playing field for the midterm elections. . . .
Read the whole thing. Folks, I cannot begin to explain how huge this is. The headline might as well be, In hoc signo vinces.
A couple weeks ago, when I first blogged about Ruth McClung’s campaign in AZ-7, it was basically as favor to an Arizona friend. Here was an excellent candidate running a g0od grassroots campaign and, as always, I love a scrappy underdog. Grijalva’s stupidity in calling for a boycott of his own state was so remarkable as to deserve another mention.
There was a chance for an against-the-odds upset but, honestly, I never expected to see a poll three weeks before Election Day showing a dead heat in AZ-7. Look at the data: Grijalva’s negatives are 47% against a positive of 39%, while Grijalva’s “deserves re-election” number is a mere 36% against 50% for “give new person a chance.” This is an incumbent in serious trouble.
To have these kind of results, when McClung reported a mere $16,000 cash on hand in early August — incredible!
Go give Ruth McClung $20 — do it now — but then come back while I tell you what this one poll, in one deep-blue district, means for the larger picture Nov. 2. Read more
A: Ludicrous Attacks From The Left

Q: What Do Christine O’Donnell And Pamela Geller Have In Common?
Via Salon, Kristen Wiig’s faux campaign ad from SNL this weekend:
I’m not sure, but the fact that SNL spent precious airtime on this could mean:
- They’re reaching out to conservative viewers.
- Their idea pool is completely empty.
- Supporters of the Bearded Marxist really have a lot of loot to waste, and think that this will somehow help.
CHRISTINE O’DONNELL for U.S. SENATE
At least this attack features Wiig, is mercifully brief, and can be viewed as humor without too much effort.
Undaunted American patriot Pamela Geller, on the other hand, received the full Duranty treatment from the scurrilous New York Times:
Just to show how avid and careful they were in their quest for the facts, they have me video blogging from an Israeli beach. Won’t Fort Lauderdale be surprised to find out that the Zionist war machine is now occupying Florida beaches? Richer still was their reference to “arching her bikini-bared back provocatively.” Please. I was submerged in the water with my kids in the background. Talk about easily titillated! I never arched my back except to swim away. They’ve been spending too much time with the Taliban. And they fault me for equating Palestinians with Hamas. The Palestinians elected Hamas, but who cares?
I’ve met Pamela. Certainly, she’s as human as the rest. Yet I think she deserves a medal for her efforts to bring consciousness to a sleeping country. If you haven’t already, buy the book she co-wrote with Robert Spencer.

A SEAL funeral features something unique:

Susan Katz Keating attending the funeral of Brendan Looney at Arlington on the 4th of October. She captured the moment with her powerful photograph above and her haunting words: “Until the day I die, I never will forget the sight and sounds of 82 SEALS removing the Tridents from their uniforms and one by one, pounding them into the coffin with their fists. Brendan Looney, RIP”
The USNI Blog post continues:
In April of 2007 1st Recon Battalion’s Lt. Travis Manion was killed on patrol in Iraq. He was buried near his hometown in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Three years later, on the 21st of September, Travis’ best friend, Navy Special Warfare’s Lt. Brendan Looney was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. Now these two best friends, college athlete standouts, Naval Academy roommates and American warriors have been laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery, together.
I don’t even begin to qualify physically to go to BUDS. While the physical conditioning and training level would be fun and exciting to attain, you simply have to feel a calling to something like the SEALs, something I never truly have.
When you are around these special forces types of various flavors, the ones to respect the most are the ones who say the least. The SEALs tend toward silence.
Democrats, Unions Bankroll 527 Group Attacking Massachusetts Republican
Posted on | October 10, 2010 | 4 Comments
BOSTON — Charles Baker is the Republican candidate challenging Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick. Lately, Baker has been targeted by attack ads from a group called “Bay State Future,” headed by Barbara Weniger. But this group is actually a front for Democrats and labor unions:
The more than $2 million worth of negative ads, aired by Bay State Future to help Patrick win reelection, were bankrolled by the Democratic Governors Association, with help from the Massachusetts Teachers Association and Local 1199 of the Service Employees International Union. . . .
In reports to the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance, Bay State Future lists the Democratic Governors, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and the SEIU local as sources of the funding . . .
Read the whole thing. The “Bay State Future” ads accuse Baker of favoring “tax loopholes that encourage companies to ship jobs overseas,” an accusation against Republicans that is being repeated all over the country this campaign cycle.
This charge is aimed at the Bush tax cuts, which Democrats say gave special treatment to transnational corporations. But Democrats have controlled Congress since January 2007 and have held the White House for nearly two years and have never attempted to repeal those provisions. Why? Because the Bush policy was smart; without it, transnational corporations would be penalized for doing business in the United States.
So if any Republican takes the Americans f0r Tax Reform pledge against new taxs, Democrats say this amounts to being in favor of shipping jobs to China — an absurd and outrageous lie that ignores the realities of both tax policy and trade policy. Rob Eno at Red Mass Group says:
During these final 23 days of the election it is helpful to remember that the Democratic Machine will do anything to hold on to power. They’ll cheat, they’ll steal, and they’ll outright lie. It is up to us to call them out on it.
Damn right. And it’s the Democratic governor Deval Patrick who is really killing jobs in Massachusetts by raising taxes that hurt business.
