Still Trying To Help TrogloPundit Get It

by Smitty

TrogloPundit is confused by all of this Byzantine DC pettifoggery on the healthcare legislation, but we here at ToM are nothing if not helpful.
In this clip, the plan is for the legislation to be wheeled up to the castle-like Senate in a wooden cart. The House Democrats, it seems, refer to the Senate as “Frenchmen”. The rabbit decoration is all part of the gag, so that the Senators will be so busy laughing that they’ll play along with the House, sign whatever is put in front of them, and deliver the Grail needed to save the presidency.
Steny Hoyer does a fine job of explaining the plan.
Also, Harry Reid’s rather phallic headwear tops off the excellent costuming on display:

The FaceBook Page That Rocked The Teleprompter Weighs In

by Smitty

Stand strong together! The implications of Obamacare will reach into every aspect of our lives, from the value of our paycheck, to the quality of our health care, to the opportunities that will be stripped from Americans as we’re shoved under the enormous burden of more government growth and control. We must stop this now.

Secretly, BHO is thankful that she’s not calling for impeachment. Yet.

Left Field Possibility

by Smitty

Say this is all a giant mind-frak.
Say that BHO, surveying the wreckage of the steaming pile of manure delivered to his desk, decrees that it is too contentious, too perilous, and that Reid and Pelosi have done what they could, but that the legislation simply wasn’t up to signing standards.
Say he vetos it outright, or they schedule the final throes so as to support a pocket veto.
Given that some are already calling for impeachment, I’d say this is a non-zero possibility. Nevertheless, I’ll be reporting from the protest tomorrow, as wishful thinking won’t fix much.
Just sayin’.

Rep. Altmire, D-PA, ‘In The No’

by Smitty

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports Jason Altmire a no,

despite weeks of personal entreaties from President Obama and Democratic House leaders, he said today.

Altmire, D-McCandless, was considered an important swing vote for House leaders who are trying to attract 216 supporters for the signature domestic initiative of Obama’s presidency.

Altmire voted against a previous health care bill last year ,and as the climactic vote on this Senate bill approaches, he has been buffeted by protests for and against the plan, intense lobbying in Congress and two visits to the White House.

FireDogLake manages the pessimistic count for those in favor of continuing these United States, and says that the Wicked Witch of the West is five unnatural acts shy of victory, at 211.

Of Course The Democrats Wouldn’t Lie About A Memo About CBO ‘Estimate’

by Smitty

The CBO comes out with a preliminary estimate. This blog has obtained a conceptual view of the inner workings of the CBO’s toil:
The Democrats then took this explicitly labeled preliminary estimate, written about a jello-to-the-wall piece of legislation of un-Presidented complexity, and treated that estimate like gospel.
Now, a memo surfaced today claiming to be from the Democrats, with a detailed exposition about how to avoid talking about yesterday’s shenanigans, from Power Line:

Democrats are disputing the memo’s authenticity. That will give media outlets cover if they decline to report on it, at least until Sunday.

How does Power Line come by all this cynicism? Just because they’re

 • wrecking the Constitution,
 • being devious about the character of the CBO estimate, and
 • generally turning a tone-deaf ear to the will of the people

doesn’t mean the Democrats would put out a memo instructing people how to evade discussions of the CBO estimate.
We’ve simply got to have some faith in the majority party, people.

Worst. Congress. Ever.

The Federal Reserve: What, Me Transparent?

by Smitty (via Insty)

Taking one eye off the ObamaCare debacle for a minute, one of the things that is going to make restoring the Constitution to full vigor a challenge is the lack of reasonable monetary policy.
Bloomberg reports that Ben Bernanke, the dude behind the financial curtain, might have to let you know the details of robberies past:

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled today that the Fed must release records of the unprecedented $2 trillion U.S. loan program launched primarily after the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. The ruling upholds a decision of a lower-court judge, who in August ordered that the information be released.

The Fed had argued that disclosure of the documents threatens to stigmatize borrowers and cause them “severe and irreparable competitive injury,” discouraging banks in distress from seeking help. A three-judge panel of the appeals court rejected that argument in a unanimous decision.

Thanks, Fed. You throw the economy and the dollar under the bus to save your cronies. Are said cronies even in the US? One sort of hopes we’re going to find out, but there is precious little precedent for accountability where the Fed is concerned.
See Ron Paul’s End the Fed. It is just 3 years, 9 months until the centennial of the Federal Reserve Act 2012 candidates worthy of support should be talking about how they are going to replace an un-elected, unaccountable, opaque organization which says quantitative easing where honest people say ‘stealing’, with an organization more in keeping with the Constitution, that document under such heavy assault just now.
In fact, I daresay that, had the Internet existed 100 years ago, the Federal Reserve Act would be greeted will all the lusty cheer afforded ObamaCare.
Meanwhile, I’ve got to make some signs for the rally tomorrow on Capitol Hill. Twice in a week! Hail to the Community Organizer in Chief, and an agenda that mobilizes America, albeit against some highly unsavory legislation.
All joking aside, the Federal Reserve, augmented by the 16th Amendment, forms a chief enabler for our delinquent Federal government. A major agenda item for the national come-to-Beavis meeting triggered by this atrocious Congress/Administration is a plan to restore the meaning of the Bill of Rights, which was to protect the private citizen from Federal over-reach.

Report: How Southern Poverty Law Center Smeared Immigration Group

Jerry Kammer of the Center for Immigration Studies describes how the SPLC, the National Council for La Raza and the open-borders group America’s Voice combined in a campaign to drive the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) out of the immigration debate:

The Southern Poverty Law Center’s December 2007 announcement that it had decided to designate the Federation for American Immigration Reform as a “hate group” was a dramatic move by the Alabama-based organization, which claims to be “dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry.”
The designation placed FAIR, one of the most prominent organizations that favor reduced immigration and oppose a sweeping legalization of illegal immigrants, on an SPLC list occupied by notoriously bigoted groups of racist skinheads, neo-Nazis, and the Ku Klux Klan. . . .
The SPLC’s move was not an act of conscience. Nor was it the bark of a public-interest watchdog. It was a publicity stunt in the service of the National Council of La Raza, which was about to launch a campaign intended to drive FAIR from the arena of public debate on national immigration policy. . . .
The campaign’s strategy was to portray FAIR as an extremist organization, so tainted by hatred and racism that it should be excluded from the public discussion of immigration. La Raza president and CEO Janet Murguia personally led the attack. Appearing on the Lou Dobbs show in early 2008, she cited the SPLC’s designation and declared, “FAIR is a known, documented hate group.”
Another NCLR ally in the campaign was a new organization called America’s Voice, whose work to influence public opinion on immigration policy is being funded by a $6 million grant from the Carnegie Corporation, a philanthropic foundation. America’s Voice is directed by Frank Sharry, who for 17 years was executive director of the National Immigration Forum, which bills itself as “the nation’s premier immigrant rights organization.” Its board of directors includes representatives from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, United Food and Commercial Workers Union, the National Immigration Law Center, and the American Nursery & Landscape Association.
As reported in the Carnegie Corporation’s magazine, America’s Voice was launched as a “communications effort designed to more directly challenge those who oppose immigration reform.” The organization sponsored full-page ads that touted the SPLC’s “hate group” declaration in Politico and Roll Call, Capitol Hill newspapers that are widely read by congressional staff and other members of the Washington political establishment.
“The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) is Designated a HATE GROUP by the Southern Poverty Law Center,” said the ad, using red capital letters to highlight “FAIR” and “HATE GROUP.” It added, “Extremist groups, like FAIR, shouldn’t write immigration policy.” . . .

That’s from a 28-page report (PDF), which also includes this:

Laird Wilcox is the principal donor of the files, journals, and books in the massive Wilcox Collection of Political Movements in the Spencer Research Library at the University of Kansas. . . .
Wilcox, who was a student radical in the 1960s and now calls himself “a classical free-speech liberal,” has observed the SPLC for years. “They want to marginalize certain points of view in our society, and they do it by acting like a kind of certifying agency that decides who is extremist and who isn’t,” he said. . . .
Wilcox says compliant, unquestioning reporters have been key to the SPLC’s efforts. “The media has just rolled over for them,” he said. . . .
The Des Moines Register has been particularly sympathetic to the SPLC and La Raza. It quoted one immigration advocate who criticized radio hosts for participating in an event sponsored by FAIR. “It’d be the same thing if the radio talk show hosts had agreed to a radio event hosted by the KKK,” she said. Such slanted coverage has been helpful to the SPLC’s campaign to smear FAIR and, by extension, other organizations that favor reduced levels of immigration. . . .
