Mississippi Update: Chris McDaniel Campaign Fights GOP Establishment
Posted on | June 1, 2014 | 36 Comments
HATTIESBURG, Mississippi
The final push of the Tea Party-backed fight to defeat Sen. Thad Cochran in the Republican primary brought big names to Mississippi this weekend in support of conservative challenger Chris McDaniel. Sarah Palin came to campaign for him Friday:
Had a great time today in the lovely Magnolia State rallying to elect Chris McDaniel to the U.S. Senate. It was wonderful meeting Chris’ beautiful family — and a special thank you to Chris’ son Cambridge for the gorgeous magnolia . . .
This Mississippi senate race is a clear case of We the People vs. the permanent political class in D.C. Many fellow conservatives like my friend Mark Levin have endorsed Chris because this is a crucial race for conservatives who know “the status quo has got to go” if we’re to get America on the right track. Chris is running for the right reasons with a positive conservative reform agenda to solve the problems facing our country. His priorities for government’s role in our lives are right on! Chris KNOWS we have to fight to put government back on our side, and he’s willing to fight for America as Mississippi’s new U.S. Senator!
The Mississippi primary is June 3rd, and the good people of the Magnolia State have the opportunity to remind America that we can and will restore our exceptional nation by electing conservative reformers like Chris McDaniel!
You can read more about Chris and support his campaign here: www.mcdaniel2014.com
– Sarah Palin
Matthew Boyle reports “a raucous audience of thousands” turned out for the Palin rally, where McDaniel took aim at the incumbent:
“Conservatives look at me for a moment, Republicans look at me for a moment: Name one fight that Sen. Thad Cochran has led against Barack Obama,” McDaniel said.
“Zero!” the crowd shouted, almost in unison. “None!” a woman near the front of the auditorium yelled.
McDaniel—feeding off the energy of the crowd—continued: “Sen. Mike Lee, he stands and fights for Utah. Sen. Rand Paul stands to fight for Kentucky. Sen. Ted Cruz stands to fight for Texas. Even a Governor from Alaska fights for us. It’s time for a son of Mississippi to stand and fight for us. I tell you, when Sen. Ted Cruz stood there that night and he laid his soul on the line for this government and for this country, we applauded him. When others joined him, Mike Lee and Rand Paul, we knew we had friends in Washington, D.C., finally. Reinforcements are coming.”
The thousands-strong crowd jumped to their feet to give McDaniel a standing ovation that lasted at least five seconds.
“Now it’s not that Sen. Cochran is a bad person,” McDaniel continued, cutting through the standing ovation. “I respect Sen. Cochran. I even like him, despite the attack ads. . . .”
Oh, yes: Attack ads — the Republican establishment is spending big money to smear Chris McDaniel, because destroying conservatives is what the Republican establishment is all about nowadays. Fortunately, conservatives are not easily deceived. The latest poll shows McDaniel with a narrow lead over the incumbent — 46%-44% — and Rick Santorum campaigned Saturday for McDaniel:
From the “sideline,” Rick Santorum had been keeping an eye on the U.S. Senate race in Mississippi and felt like State Sen. Chris McDaniel’s battle with six-term Sen. Thad Cochran looked like a fair fight.
“Then something happened here in the last few weeks that diverted attention away from that,” the 2012 presidential candidate said Saturday at a McDaniel rally in Diamondhead. “And when I saw that, I said you know what, they’re hiding the ball here. They’re hiding the ball and trying to make this race not about what’s important for our country and the next six years for the state of Mississippi, but they’re trying to make this about something else that has nothing to do with the two candidates.”
At that point, Santorum said he decided to jump in and back McDaniel with the primary just a few days out.
Yeah, the weirdest scandal in political history — caused by a blogger! — was an embarrassing distraction, but conservatives in Mississippi are still focused on “what’s important for our country,” and defeating Thad Cochran on Tuesday is the first step. How desperate is the incumbent? He’s running ads “explicitly calling on Democrats to cross party lines and vote in the GOP primary for Cochran.”
It’s time to beat these Establishment bastards. Beat the hell out of them. Tell ’em there is a limit beyond which we will not be pushed.
Got to be up early in the morning for a 4-hour drive to Tupelo.

Craig McCulloch Is the Real Deal
Posted on | June 1, 2014 | 41 Comments
NEW ORLEANS
Last night, I attended an event for Craig McCulloch, a candidate for Congress in Louisiana’s 6th District. McCulloch is one of nine — yes, I said nine — Republicans running for this seat, whereas octogenarian sleazeball Edwin Edwards is the best the Democrats could come up with, in a district where more than 60 percent of voters are Republican.
The McCulloch event last night was held at a beautiful old terrace apartment overlooking Jackson Square, where I met not only the candidate and his wife, but also his sister-in-law and her husband. It was a wonderful party, and then McCulloch’s campaign manager said, “Have you seen the video?” Guys, trust me: You want to watch this three-minute video. You want to watch it full-screen, and then you’re going to want to send it to every conservative you know:
As I said last night: Mark Levin is going to love this guy. What Craig McCulloch says in three minutes is what Mark Levin has been saying for three hours five nights a week for at least the past five years. McCulloch is totally authentic: He’s a hometown boy who played quarterback in college and, while being treated for injuries, decided to become a physical therapist. He turned that career into a succcessful business and, as a medical professional, he knows how badly ObamaCare is impacting health-care in this country. But you can just read Craig McCulloch’s biography yourself, and decide for yourself what you want to do. Having met the man, I need no more persuading.
Shinseki Resigned? This Changes Everything!
Posted on | May 31, 2014 | 34 Comments
So Eric Shinseki resigned yesterday as Veterans Affairs Secretary and is going to be replaced by Acting Secretary Sloan Gibson. And lo, all over Facebook, Twitter, and the rest of the Intertubes there was much rejoicing, for Something Had Been Done. Now there’s a lot of discussion over who’s going to be Shinseki’s successor, because of course all we need is the right guy in charge over there, right? Somebody to clean house, exorcise the eeeevil culture of sinister ineptitude, and usher in a new dawn of caring, sensitive, timely care for all those who served, right? Maybe Jim Webb can clean this Augean stable! Or Mad Dog Mattis!

Yeah, right. In case you missed my previous post about the VA, I suggest you go back and read it. The problems with the VA don’t start with Obama -although he’s done precious little about the problem except hector Congress for more money and pissed it away when he got it- or with Bush, as some on the left are trying to claim*, or even with Bill Clinton, Bush The Elder, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon or LBJ, to name just the presidents whose administrations I personally remember. You think it’s actually going to make a difference who replaces Shinseki? The Rock has some advice for you.
The only things that will change the VA are an aggressive expansion of the program to take Medicare-eligible vets out of the VA system and hand them off to civilian healthcare providers, and giving the new Secretary the power to utterly purge the Veterans Health Administration of everyone connected with the current scheduling debacle. Both of these will be fought tooth and nail by the existing bureaucrats and their union, along with the Democrats in Congress who are their allies – and the Establishment RINOs who just want to go along to get along. Of the two, I think the former is more likely, since it doesn’t do much to imperil the bureaucracy in the short term and is the simplest way for the current Administration to look like it’s “doing something for veterans”. Ideally, we’d terminate the Veterans Health Administration with extreme prejudice** and give veterans who can’t afford medical care Tricare without co-pays, but in that world we wouldn’t have the Departments of Education, Energy, Homeland Security and other exrescences either. Small steps. Reduce the load on the existing system now, and make reform of the VHA the opening wedge for destroying the civil service – or at least ridding the Federal government of its employee unions. One thing’s for sure, changing the man at the top won’t make any more difference to the Department of Veterans Affairs than changing the figurehead on a sailing ship made to the way it handled.
*h/t Charlie Martin on Facebook.
**There are other parts of the VA that aren’t nearly so screwed up.

Conservative Intel sponsored the poll.
I’m optimistic because we’re seeing a grassroots tsunami rise up to #MakeDCListen: http://t.co/QNDkAICzei #RLC2014 pic.twitter.com/aGYd3tghHD
— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) May 31, 2014
And Senator Ted Cruz is the winner!
Further results:
1. Ted Cruz — 30.33 percent
2. Ben Carson — 29.38 percent
3. Rand Paul — 10.43 percent
more at the link.
Senator Rand Paul had won the last straw poll, in March.
Looking further down the report, blog favorite Allen West placed:
10. Paul Ryan — 2.05 percent
11. Allen West (write-in) — 2.05 percent
Interestingly, Governor Scott Walker was flying below the radar. One hopes the GOP capitalizes on this energy.
