University Shuts Down Women’s Center After ‘How to Be a Lesbian’ Controversy

Controversy flared in March when it was reported that the University of South Carolina Upstate (USCU) Center for Women’s & Gender Studies would host Leigh Hendrix’s one-woman show, “How to Be a Lesbian in 10 Days or Less.” Now, USCU officials have announced that the Center for Women’s & Gender Studies will be closed:

The University of South Carolina Upstate eliminated the center that sponsored a gay culture symposium this spring as part of $450,000 in cost cuts for next year. School leaders said that sponsorship did not lead to the 15-year-old center’s demise. . . .
The decision to close Upstate’s Center for Women’s and Gender Studies on July 1 was not related to sponsoring a symposium this spring that examined “New Normals, Old Normals, Future Normals in LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) Community,” chancellor Moore said. The symposium scheduled a play, called “How to Be a Lesbian in 10 Days or Less,” that was canceled after an outcry . . .
Cutting the center will save $45,000 a year, a school spokeswoman said. The center’s director will return to the school’s full-time faculty.
“Not only is this decision not punitive or a response to external pressure, it is part of an effort to be consistent and systematic across academic affairs in how we administer and support various programs,” Moore said.
Women’s and Gender Studies is the only interdisciplinary minor at Upstate that has a dedicated center, the school said.

Despite official statements that the lesbian controversy was not a factor in the decision to close the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies at the USCU campus in Spartanburg, some faculty members told Charleston City Paper columnist Alison Piepmeier that USCU is now “a hostile environment,” a climate they find “terrifying.” Trudy Ring at the feminist site SheWired.com suggested “retaliation” motivated the decision.

The web page of the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies has no statement about the decision, nor have press accounts about the decision quoted the Center’s director, Professor Merri Lisa Johnson.

Professor Johnson is a self-described radical “queer feminist”:

The director of the University of South Carolina Upstate (USCU) Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (CWGS) suffers from a “serious mental illness” and in 2010 described herself as a “newlywed lesbian” whose partner was apparently her former student.
Professor Merri Lisa Johnson published a 2010 book about her struggles with borderline personality disorder. The description of her partner in that book appears to fit a young “butch” lesbian who graduated from USCU in 2008, two years after Professor Johnson joined the faculty of the school in Spartanburg, S.C. . . .
In her 2010 book, Girl in Need of a Tourniquet: Memoir of a Borderline Personality, Professor Johnson describes herself as a “psycho girlfriend” with a history of dysfunctional relationships with both men and women: “Johnson combines her late-in-life coming out story (between ages 31-37) with the story of what amounts to a nervous breakdown as the result of an affair with a married lesbian colleague.” That affair “prompted her to seek professional help,” apparently around the time Professor Johnson  left Coastal Carolina University to become director of USCU-CWGS in 2006. . . .
In an article last fall, Professor Johnson described her “queer feminist insistence on the importance, validity, and complexity of women’s pleasure” and her “Marxist feminist distrust of pleasure under patriarchy,” adding that “teaching Women’s and Gender Studies 101 since fall 2006 . . . has firmed up my radical side.”

Feminism’s hostility toward men and toward heterosexuality has often been expressed as lesbian advocacy:

‘Impeachable Offenses’: Obama Policy Releases Criminal Illegal Aliens

A new book exposes malfeasance by President Obama, and the administration’s defenders are trying to “kill the messenger”:

Houston immigration attorney Raed Gonzalez claims the controversy surrounding the Obama administration’s release of tens of thousands of criminal illegal aliens is just a “publicity stunt” generated by the authors of a book documenting the case for impeaching Obama.
Gonzalez has been the liaison between the Executive Office for Immigration Review, which administers the immigration court system, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Asked about the scandal on Fox News’ “Justice with Judge Jeanine,” Gonzalez told the audience, “I think all of you fell for the publicity stunt of Mr. Elliott and miss, miss, what was it, Brenda Elliot and Mr. Aaron Klein, with their book, ‘Impeachable Offenses,’ that came out a couple of weeks ago. And they were denouncing the Obama administration for releasing all of these people.” . . .
Recently reported information about the Obama administration’s release in 2013 of 36,007 criminal illegal aliens . . . originated with internal memos from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, or ICE, as cited in a report by the Center for Immigration Studies.
However, in “Impeachable Offenses: The Case to Remove Barack Obama from Office,” New York Times bestselling authors Klein and Elliott cite further ICE documentation showing the release of thousands more criminal illegals from 2009 to 2011.
“Impeachable Offenses” further documents that of the more than 7,000 criminals released in those years, some went on to be charged with 19 more murders, three attempted murders and 142 sex crimes after their release from jail by the Obama administration.
The statistics pose a grim outlook for the 36,007 additional criminal illegal aliens reportedly released last year by ICE.

Read the whole thing. Gonzalez is using a favorite liberal tactic: Trying to divert attention from a story by referring to the allegedly malicious motives of the people reporting or promoting the story. To say that Klein and Elliott are conservatives, or to say that attention to the criminal alien scandal helps Klein and Elliott sell books — well, these things may be entirely true, without changing one iota the basic facts of the story, or the policy issues involved, or the political impact of the story.

It’s like when the Left screams “Koch money!” as if the funding of any particular project by the Koch brothers immediately discredits that project. This is just a distraction tactic, and when Democrats use these tactics, they should be called out for it.

Also, you should probably buy Impeachable Offenses: The Case to Remove Barack Obama from Office by Aaron Klein and Brenda Elliott. If the Left hates it this much, it’s got to be pretty awesome.

Democrat Debbie Wasserman-Schultz Recycles ‘War on Women’ Theme

The DNC chairwoman issued a statement on Women’s Health Week in which she evidently presumes that (a) abortion is essential to “women’s health,” (b) opposition to abortion is an “extreme agenda,” and (c) all women think ObamaCare is awesome:

[A]t the state and national level, Republicans have repeatedly taken actions that restrict access to health care for women and families. Yes, they’ve voted more than 50 times to repeal or undermine Obamacare, but their disregard goes beyond even that. Just last week, the RNC passed a resolution that makes their restrictive and extreme women’s health agenda one of their focuses going into the midterm elections. . . .
When the RNC backs extreme policies like that, there are real-world consequences for women. In my home state, Florida Republicans including Gov. Rick Scott are taking constrictions on women’s health to a new level. The state legislature recently passed two new restrictions that will interfere with a woman’s right to make her own medical decisions with her doctor, and instead inserts the GOP’s extreme agenda into these very private discussions . . .
If Rick Scott signs these bills — and I’m sorry to say that I’m confident he will — my home state will be the next in a long line of states to roll back the clock on women’s rights. It is senseless and it is wrong. This National Women’s Health Week, I’m standing with Florida women.

Let the Politics Commence

Sunday afternoon, our family attended a nice party to celebrate our son-in-law’s graduation from law school. It was a nice opportunity for me to hassle my daughter and her husband about the need to provide me with grandchildren, and also to tell some of my favorite lawyer jokes, but it was just fun. No need to bring politics into it. My son-in-law is more liberal than me, but then again, everybody is more liberal than me. Why argue about politics at a graduation party?

Students at Haverford College seem to feel differently:

In a surprising move, a commencement speaker at Haverford College on Sunday used the celebratory occasion to deliver a sharp rebuke to students who had mounted a campaign against another speaker who had been scheduled to appear but withdrew amid the controversy.
William G. Bowen, former president of Princeton and a nationally respected higher education leader, called the student protestors’ approach both “immature” and “arrogant” and the subsequent withdrawal of Robert J. Birgeneau, former chancellor of the University of California Berkeley, a “defeat” for the Quaker college and its ideals.
Bowen’s remarks to an audience of about 2,800 that gave him a standing ovation added a new twist to commencement speaker controversies playing out increasingly on college campuses across the nation. Bowen faced no opposition, but chose to defend a fellow speaker who was targeted, calling the situation “sad” and “troubling.”
Rutgers University also held commencement on Sunday without former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who withdrew after professors and students there protested her appearance for her role in the Iraq war. Smith and Brandeis, too, saw the loss of speakers this year.
At Haverford, the controversy arose over Birgeneau’s leadership during a 2011 incident in which UC Berkeley police used force on students protesting college costs. A group of more than 40 students and three Haverford professors — all Berkeley alums — objected to Birgeneau’s appearance and receipt of an honorary degree, noting that many of them had participated in Occupy protests as well and wanted to stand in solidarity with Berkeley students.
They wrote a letter to Birgeneau, urging him to meet nine conditions, including publicly apologizing, supporting reparations for the victims, and writing a letter to Haverford students explaining his position on the events and “what you learned from them.”
Bowen – who made clear he took no position on Birgeneau’s handling of the Berkeley student demonstration — blasted the Haverford protestors’ approach.
“I am disappointed that those who wanted to criticize Birgeneau’s handling of events at Berkeley chose to send him such an intemperate list of “demands,” said Bowen, who led Princeton from 1972 to 1988 and last year received the National Humanities Medal from President Obama. “In my view, they should have encouraged him to come and engage in a genuine discussion, not to come, tail between his legs, to respond to an indictment that a self-chosen jury had reached without hearing counter-arguments.”

Deranged Cyberstalker Bill Schmalfeldt Explores New Frontiers of Failure

It’s been three weeks since we checked in on the antics of Bill Schmalfeldt, the brain-damaged troll whose harassment of Brett Kimberlin’s enemies led him into an bizarre obsession with John Hoge, my co-defendant in the perjuring bomber’s vexatious lawsuits.

Read that sentence again, please.

If you’re a regular reader, it all makes sense, but if you were somebody just randomly browsing the Web and encountering this for the first time, you would have some questions: Who is Brett Kimberlin? Why do I call him “the perjuring bomber”? Why do I call Bill Schmalfeldt a “brain-damaged troll”? Who is John Hoge, and why are both of us being sued by Kimberlin? It’s a long, crazy story that I’ve been involved in for two years now, and it is important to acknowledge up front that the latest weirdness by Bill Schmalfeldt is occurring way off there on the obscure online fringes of Weirdoville.

It’s not BREAKING URGENT NEWS, in other words, and the essential triviality of Bill Schmalfeldt is something I understand, even if Bill doesn’t understand it himself. OK, so . . .

Bill Schmalfeldt has been self-publishing “books” about his demented misadventures. While I haven’t paid any attention to these, I think Bill is basically collecting up his own blog posts into “books,” which would probably be of interest to no one, except perhaps to a Maryland court — Exhibit A, as it were, in the case to have Bill Schmalfeldt permanently committed to a state psychiatric hospital. Let’s let Bill tell you what has resulted from his kooky publishing venture:

They killed “My Slow, Journalistic Death.” Because I used a sentence from WJJ Hoge’s blog.
They killed “Intentional Infliction”. Because “Paul Krendler” claims he sold the rights to a blog to WJJ Hoge.
They killed “WJJ Hoggy Tells You How to Smack Around a Handicapped Liberal (and get away with it).” Because Robin Wesley Causey claimed a copyright he doesn’t own.
And now, “Cyber Ins@nity” has been tossed off of the lists at Lulu.com. They won’t tell me why, except that someone claims it “invades” his or her privacy.

In other words, Bill Schmalfeldt’s book publishing career has been about as successful as his “journalism” career, which is to say it’s been a laughable failure, because Bill is a brain-damaged troll.

However, because he is unable to acknowledge his ineptitude or to take responsibility for his own failures, every time Bill Schmalfeldt fails, he blames his enemies, demonizing them as scapegoats, and then doubling down on failure. Later, rinse, repeat.

(The nice nurses at the psych ward are nodding in agreement.)

Bill has inflated the importance of his own (self-inflicted) problems and blames these problems on Hoge and on various commenters at Hoge’s blog — Paul Krendler, Robin Causey, etc. — and has taken to “doxing” these people (publishing their personal information) and, by using such materials in his “books,” Schmalfeldt has stirred up trouble for himself with these online self-publishing services.

Who is Nancy Gilly? Is she indeed @LibraryGryffon? And why would anyone other than Bill Schmalfeldt care? Bill’s complaints are as nonsensical as his helpless obsession with the “Wonderful Wizard of Hoge,” but this is how pathology becomes identity: Believing himself to be a victim, Schmalfeldt makes his victimhood the basis of his identity, and then interprets everything in that context. But because his victimhood is delusional — his misfortunes are in fact the result of his own actions — his self-created persona of “Victim Bill” is simply a symptomatic manifestation of his derangement.

In the latest episode, Bill Schmalfeldt went chasing after the identity of that elusive phantom “pemason54,” to no avail:

Of course, I have the IP addresses of all the comments that have come in under the name pemason54. The IPs trace to three sets of locations. Two are in adjacent towns in a state on the east coast. The third traces to various locations east of the Mississippi River belonging to a mobile phone carrier.

The Progressive Spirit Is Breaking

Michael Goodwin at the New York Post gets it wrong in “The American Spirit is Breaking“:

There are many examples that say our spirit is breaking if not already broken. One involves a Wall Street Journal report that, six years after the housing bubble popped and sank the economy, federal officials want to lower mortgage standards again so more people can buy houses that they can’t afford. Been there, done that would seem to be the logical response, but the idea is gaining momentum because so few people can legitimately qualify for credit that the only way to spur housing growth is to junk the standards.
The same thing is happening in schools. Americans overwhelmingly agree that our educational system, once the envy of the world, is now lagging.

The American notion of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is still chugging along. A century of decay in our self-appointed and vastly over-rated elite has wrought significant debt and damage, sure.

The question is whether the basic “In God we trust” ethic has been catastrophically supplanted by “In the State, its ‘experts’ and the pagan, hedonistic, fruitless, and ultimately destructive pleasures they peddle, we trust, despite repeated backstabbings”.

The effects have been devastating, sure: to go the Apollo moonshot to an appalling President who can’t launch a website, in a mere half-century, is a downer. But my contention is that #OccupyResoluteDesk is not a representative sample. It would be better to argue that the variance across a population the size of America is so vast as to make the notion of an “American spirit” too nebulous to pursue.

I hope that the smarmy blue state Progressive spirit is breaking. There is significant risk that the final Progressive implosion will bury the conservatives in humus. Irrespective of that, the basic, God-fearing “American spirit” has by no means been completely vanquished by the Progressive lust for Hell. Let not your heart be troubled. Pray that wisdom find these Progressives, that they repent, even as we put the heat on them in primaries and elections, and kick their foolish selves out of office.

These Progressives have been lying about the ‘recovery’ for long enough. Lies are tactical, like elections. Truth has a strategic character to it, and is going to outlive these lies. Could take a few years. Have faith. In what matters.
