Perverts, Degenerates and Sociopaths

Sue Lyon in Lolita (1962)

S.J. Reidhead has an excellent examination of the characteristic problems of pro-pedophile apologists in the “Free Kate” movement, an inevitable consequence of the arguments that the Hunt family has made in defense of the accused sex offender Kaitlyn Ashley Hunt.

From the beginning, both Kaitlyn’s parents have been dishonest about the case for the simple reason that, if they had been honest, the response would have been: “She ought to take the plea bargain.” The creation of a false narrative of victimhood was the only way for them to gain widespread sympathy. Once the truth about the case became public (the facts have been compiled at Support Honesty), the “Free Kate” movement lost mainstream support, and what was left was a hard core of fanatics, many of them evidently suffering from emotional disorders.

Meanwhile, however, S.J. Reidhead writes:

If you start surfing the internet, you will find that there are numerous articles popping up, along with sites, saying that the whole problem of pedophilia is hysteria.

This argument — that pedophiles are so rare that only “hysterics” worry about them — is often accompanied by pious lectures about the importance of understanding these pedophiles we shouldn’t worry about. And occasionally you find them citing “studies” which, upon further investigation, were authored by notorious pedophiles. Read more

Crony Journalism at Think Progress?

Posted on | June 22, 2013 | 28 Comments

Aleister at American Glob publishes “An Illustrated Guide To The Dishonesty Of Think Progress” with a link to an intriguing article at The Nation (of all places) which describes “a secret group of corporate donors” that would appear to function as a nexus between (a) businesses reliant on funding from the federal government’s “green energy” programs, and (b) the Center for the American Progress, which does not disclose the conflicts of interest behind its advocacy on behalf of “green energy.”

I used to know a guy who focused on the Center for American Progress as a key element of what he called “the institutional Left.”

Damn, I miss that guy.

The Eliminationist Rhetoric of @QueerSpring2013, Twitter Psychopath UPDATE: The ‘Pomosexual’ Mandela?

Posted on | June 21, 2013 | 94 Comments

If you recall the reaction to passage of Proposition 8 (see my 2008 article “Gay Rights, Gay Rage”), you know that the more militant members of the gay rights movement are some of the most hate-filled lunatics in human history. Pol Pot looks reasonable by comparison.

One such deranged monster uses the Twitter handle @QueerSpring2013, whose profile announces a radical agenda:

REFUSE TO ACCEPT AUTHORITY OF
HETEROSUPREMACIST APARTHEID LAWS
DENYING LGBTIQ HUMAN RIGHTS

Right: All hitherto existing human society has been an unjust and oppressive tyranny of “heterosupremacist apatheid,” of which this pseudonymous online ranter is the enraged victim. From this sense of victimhood is derived a self-righteousness that “liberates” the radical from all social norms, empowering them to attack any opponent By Any Means Necessary. A few samples of the resulting discourse:

QS2013 first showed up in my timeline attacking critics of the “Free Kate” movement (because if you don’t believe in the right to have sex in school toilet stalls with 14-year-olds, you’re a hater). And the goal of QS2013 is not to engage these critics in debate, but rather to silence them, to abolish dissent, to shut down the online voices of anyone who thinks Kaitlyn Hunt should stand trial in Florida.

The essence of QS2013’s argument: Decent law-abiding people have no rights, as “rights” are reserved entirely for criminal perverts.

Have a friendly chat with @QueerSpring2013 on Twitter.

UPDATE: Nothing is more predictable than that radicals will costume themselves in the “civil rights” wardrobe, without any thought to the appropriateness of the comparisons they invoke:

“Pornosexual”? Yeah. While advocating legal sex with 14-year-olds, it’s important to declare your enthusiasm for pornography.

UPDATE II: Thanks to the reader who scrutinized this and realized that the word is actually “pomosexual” — “pomo” being the ancient Greek word for lunatic. No, I’m kidding: “Pomo” is shorthand for postmodern, but most postmodernists are lunatics who spend a lot of time jacking off to porn, so it really means the same thing.

UPDATE III: Rather appropriate:

Stereotype: Neurobiology Majors Just Can’t Resist Those Sexy Seventh-Graders

Posted on | June 21, 2013 | 41 Comments

It’s a familiar problem in every college town: How to keep the neurobiology majors from banging middle-school girls.

Oh, sure, the nuclear physics department always has its share of jailbait-chasers and more than a few chemical engineers have a taste for the young stuff, but every university administrator knows this: Nine times out of 10, if the parents of some hot-to-trot pubescent townie call the cops to complain about their 12-year-old getting boned by one of your Dean’s List students, it’s gonna be a neurobiology major.

It’s one of those stereotypes that just happen to be true. That’s why, as soon as Evil Blogger Lady told me that a 22-year-old University of Washington senior had been arrested for having sex with a 12-year-old, I knew it was going to be a neurobiology major:

A university senior accused of having sex with a 12-year-old girl told police the runaway was “dressed provocatively” when he met her near the University of Washington campus. Omar Abdelbadie, 22, was charged with second-degree child rape for the June 10 incident in which prosecutors say he smoked marijuana and had sexual intercourse with the girl he met after midnight in Bellevue’s University District.

When he says the girl was “dressed provocatively,” he means she was dressed like a seventh-grader, because he’s a typical neurobiology major, to whom a training bra is provocative. The headline at CBS News:

Omar Abdelbadie, Univ. of Washington
neurobiology student, accused of raping girl, 12

Our courageous news media are warning America’s parents about the danger posed to their daughters by these brain-science types.

Some people have accused Pamela Geller of fomenting hate and bigotry against neurobiology majors. IYKWIMAITYD.

In Praise of Conor Friedersdorf

Everyone who’s raised a child, or housebroken a puppy, knows the importance of rewards and punishments.* So it is with young pundits who show the occasional flashes of conservative or libertarian leanings: we must fisk them, or at the very least point and laugh, when they write something stupid for public consumption, but by the same token we must link and give praise when they write something worth reading. This is how we get to today’s reflection on a post by Conor Friedersdorf** at The Atlantic, notorious haven of half-bright intellectualoids of the “progressive” persuasion. Conor has been (deservedly) mocked on this blog for thinking he is smarter than he actually is and making noises about being conservative when in fact his writings would lead one to suspect that his politics are somewhere between Chris Christie and Megan McArdle, and I am being generous here.

Conor does a fine job of fisking epically stupid pieces by Jonathan Chait and Julia Ioffe (BIRM) who through the magic of advanced cognitive dissonance technology manage to claim that Rand Paul is some kind of Objectivist monster who hates personal freedom even while acknowledging that Paul has been on the right side of every fight this year over the First, Second and Fourth Amendments. “Everything is wrapped in paranoia,” Conor correctly observes. Read the whole thing; it is refreshingly free of backhanded slaps at the GOP and conservatives, and even if fisking Jonathan Chait is like shooting fish in a barrel with an automatic shotgun, it still needs doing, especially in the pages of websites like The Atlantic, which still makes some pretense of being politically neutral.

Tip o’ the Wombat’s fedora to Instapundit for linking the article and inspiring this.
*Actually, I’m beginning to suspect a lot of parents don’t know this, judging from the number of rotten little kids I’m exposed to when I go out in public.
**Yes, one “n” in “Conor”.
