Ryan was campaigning again in Columbus, Ohio, today:

“Just down in Florida yesterday, Vice President Biden was making up all new falsehoods about Social Security and taxes. They’re trying to scare people for political gain. That’s unfortunately the kind of campaign that we’re seeing, as I said, from a President without a record to run on. Let me be very clear: There is only one person in this race threatening the health and retirement security programs of our seniors, and that is President Obama. There is only one person in this race insisting on raising taxes and that is President Obama. In fact, Joe Biden himself voted to raise taxes on Social Security benefits. And as a Senator, President Obama voted to keep those tax increases in place three times. I want to be very clear about this. Mitt Romney and I will never waver in our commitment to our seniors. Our plans actually save these programs. They make no changes for people in or near retirement. And they strengthen Medicare and Social Security for a generation. You know why we do this? Because it is a promise that was made. It’s because people organized their retirements around these promises. They paid their taxes when they worked. And now these benefits are due to them. And shame on the politician who wants to use this issue to try and scare seniors, when those of us are trying to fix this problem for my generation and my kids’ generation, and your kids. We will win this election. We will save Medicare and Social Security. And we will make sure that these promises are kept for future generations.”

Perhaps more importantly, Ryan dropped into a sports bar in Columbus to join Ohio State fans cheering on their Buckeyes:

Dressed in a jacket with Ohio State colors of scarlet and gray, Ryan greeted a crowd of diehard Ohio State fans at the Varsity Club, a bar located just 500 yards away from the stadium. It was not only game day, but also parents’ weekend and the bar was teeming with students and more than a few parents, all dressed in scarlet and gray T-shirts, sweatshirts, and jerseys.
It was mostly a receptive audience to the GOP vice presidential nominee and he took photos and shook hands, introducing himself as “Paul” to the packed bar who greeted him with, “Paul Ryan is here!”

Do You Believe the Ohio Polls?

A recent series of three polls — by the Washington Post, Quinnipiac and Fox News — show Mitt Romney getting blown out of the water in Ohio, and those of us who are skeptical about these numbers (c’mon, 10 points?) are being derided as “poll denialists.”

It is worth pointing out that these polls were all taken in the immediate aftermath of the “secret video” uproar, and all of them are now at least five days out of date. The Fox poll was taken Sept. 16-18, the WaPo poll was taken Sept. 19-23 and Quinnipiac’s poll was taken Sept. 18-24.

There has been no new public polling since Monday, which is significant in that Paul Ryan and Romney spent three days this week campaigning in Ohio — Lima, Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, Cleveland and Toledo. We must ask: Do polls matter more than the campaigns themselves? Do the national media control the narrative to such an extent that 4,000 people turning out for Romney in Toledo can be dismissed as irrelevant? Is all the grassroots effort by Americans for Prosperity moot?

We’re still four days away from the first debate, Wednesday in Denver, and yet we are being told that Obama’s headed for a landslide victory in Ohio, and thus re-election Nov. 6.

Really? Reports of declining Democrat registrations don’t justify even a tiny smidgen of doubt about this allegedly foregone conclusion? Let’s consult another poll:

A new survey by Gallup asked Americans how much trust and confidence they have in the mass media — newspapers, television and radio — when it comes to reporting the news fully, accurately and fairly: a great deal, a fair amount, not very much, or none at all. The result shows that “trust” disappeared long ago. Trust becomes disgust.
Gallup has been taking this measurement over the past decade or so, and the erosion of trust has been consistent and steady since at least 1998. Twelve years ago, 53 percent of Americans told Gallup that they had “a great deal” or at least “a fair amount” of trust in the media. By this year, only 40 percent of Americans put their trust in newspapers, television and radio to tell them what’s going on in the world. A remarkable 60 percent said they had “not very much” trust or “none at all.”

How do underdog candidates — and let’s admit Mitt is the underdog at this stage of the campaign — cut through the media filter? On Wednesday, for the first time, Americans are going to get a chance to see Romney and Obama on the same stage, head-to-head, and if you think that debate is going to be a walkover for Obama, you don’t remember the Jan. 26 debate in Jacksonville, Fla., where Mitt fatally lacerated Newt Gingrich.

Keep in mind that Romney doesn’t have to be declared hands-down winner of that debate in order to “win.” All he has to do is to “look presidential,” avoid gaffes and get in a couple of good zingers and everything that happened before will be forgotten.

Should that happen — if Mitt scores at least a draw in the first debate — the narrative changes and, by the time Paul Ryan meets Joe Biden in the Oct. 11 vice-presidential debate, we’ll be hearing about a race that is a neck-and-neck horse race.

Yet there are those Ohio polls, and there are those who are willing to take the polls as evidence that the campaign is all but over. Doug Ross lists some of the improbable beliefs necessary to buy into this argument:

[Y]ou have to believe that the Tea Party never organized or simply disappeared into thin air
[Y]ou have to believe that Obama’s act of adding $6 trillion — 60 percent — to the national debt, which has resulted in the country’s first credit downgrade, is wildly popular . . .
[Y]ou have to believe that the 2010 tidal wave election never happened

You don’t believe that, do you? No, of course not.

Frankly, despite all the certainty of the pollsters and pundits, I don’t think most people in Ohio (or anywhere else) are paying much attention to the campaign at this point. In the parking lot of this McDonald’s in Galion, there is not a single car with a bumper sticker for either Obama or Romney and, driving around the state this week, I haven’t seen a lot of yard signs.

Obama may be ahead in Ohio right now, but the campaign is far from over, because many voters haven’t yet made up their minds. The attempt by the Obamaphile media to create the appearance of an early decision — with the help of the polling firm of “Madoff, Marist, Quinnipiac and Ponzi” — ought to be rejected as the propaganda ploy it really is.

Understand that most Ohioans are currently more concerned with Ohio State football (the Buckeyes beat Michigan State 17-16 today) than they are with the upcoming election. These sensible Midwesterners, who two years ago elected Republican John Kasich govern0r and Republican Rob Portman to the Senate, are unlikely to buy into a lot of media hype going ’round.

This Lawlessness Should WARN All Americans About Second Obama Term

Insty helps us get to some interesting details about the “Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988“.

. . .a United States labor law which protects employees, their families, and communities by requiring most employers with 100 or more employees to provide sixty- (60) calendar-day advance notification of plant closings and mass layoffs of employees.

Now, this administration has been unable to get a budget passed, and, having blown off its own Simpson-Bowles Commission, has the DoD on the brink of sequestration cuts.

The terrifying truth has the administration wetting itself:

But the Friday guidance from the Office of Management and Budget raised the stakes in the dispute, telling contractors that they would be compensated for legal costs if layoffs occur due to contract cancellations under sequestration — but only if the contractors follow the Labor guidance.
The guidance said that if plant closings or mass layoffs occur under sequestration, then “employee compensation costs for [Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification] WARN act liability as determined by a court” would be paid for covered by the contracting federal agency.

Let me see if I grasp this: OMB is telling employers that, as long as they toe the OMB line, the employers can blow off the law, and the government will have their six.  Is it legal to encourage lawlessness like this?

This should be referred to the Court of Public Opinion for a vote in November. Americans, if you can’t read between the lines here, and see the danger, what more is there to say? Based on this, and the pattern of behavior in which these shenanigans fall, I reasonably expect that BHO is going to quantitatively ease himself into an open-ended term. The 22nd Amendment isn’t going to get any more respect than the WARN Act from this creep.

She tapped her iPod to life, screen light reflecting off of a face with more metal in it than shrapnel in that of a soldier in close proximity to an IUD burst. “Here’s this rumor that Mitt Romney was actually fathered by a Vulcan. Can we protest that, or would xenophobia contradict the call for open borders? It’s easy to be against everything when you’re small, but when you’re a big-time activist, you can find you’re protesting yourself.”

Things had been hard for If since splitting with Edina “Butch” MacTungsten. “We got in a tremendous fight over Rachel Maddow, and whether characterizing an obvious joke as a gaffe was a new form of stupid”, she said, running a tattooed hand across her shaved scalp, straightening her mohawk. “Oh, well. I’ve got to get on the road to my next paid protest. I’ll be glad for this election to get over, so that I can get back to serious work, like protesting Dick Cheney’s Pacific Ocean Trash Vortex.”

First Task Of A Romney Administration Is Going To Be Restoring Integrity To Gov

Nothing else the government tries to do really matters if no one believes a godforsaken thing escaping the Beltway orifice. The Lonely Conservative points to Hugh Hewitt pointing to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (which acronym seems more straightforward without the ‘L’) magically locating 386,000 jobs since March. Over six months, the number had slipped by a third of a million, in a way that unexpectedly, helps #OccupyResoluteDesk look better. How could anyone doubt this?

Then there is the official deflation of the inflation statistics. The following chart shows today’s inflation calculated with tree different methodologies. ShadowStats.com holds inflation at 9% via the 1980 methodology, 5% using that of 1990, vs. the 2% leg pull now offered. For a quick bit of spreadsheetery, the good news is that BLS might hit 0 sometime in a second Obama administration:

Add to the unemployment and inflation debacles the over three years now since there was a budget, and “Zimbabwe” Ben Bernanke’s QEternity demolition of the currency, and the message is clear: Romney needs to articulate to the American people just how thoroughly jacked up our entire government stands.

It’s a time for candor, not deceit. Resolve, not platitudes. During the debates, Romney should appeal to the intellect. When BHO tries to paint Romney as alarmist, Mitt should straight up play the “Bless your heart” card, and point out that the country cannot continue on this course. No need for rancor, reprisal, or recriminations: just a sane approach.

There is an amazing tendency for people to grow up and behave rationally when treated like adults and presented with facts. In contrast, our government increasingly has treated the people as children, and isn’t honest about the disastrous results.
