Pregnancy Is Not a Disease and Contraception Is Not ‘Health Care’

Why, therefore, does Obama want to make insurance coverage for birth control mandatory?

Virtually all health insurance plans could soon be required to offer female patients free coverage of prescription birth control, breast-pump rentals, counseling for domestic violence, and annual wellness exams and HIV tests as a result of recommendations released Tuesday by an independent advisory panel of health experts.
The health-care law adopted last year directed the Obama administration to draw up a list of preventive services for women that all new health plans must cover without deductibles or co-payments. While the guidelines suggested Tuesday by a committee of the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine are not binding, the panel conducted its year-long review at the request of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Maybe Mr. “Catholics for Obama” Douglas Kmiec can explain this to the idiots he duped in 2008. Meanwhile, this looks likes a good occasion to mention ForRepeal.com:

Smitty Home On R&R

by Smitty

Back on terra Americana at last! The wife has overhauled major chunks of the house, and it looks great. Also, being in a country with usable bandwidth is a refreshing change. Not to get too self-congratulatory here, but you really have to know too much to get any sort of blogposts going from Other Places.

Mrs. Other Smitty was gracious enough to pose for a Blogger Bump photo. The World’s Youngest Blogger is estimated to be arriving around the 25th, but we may, for various reasons, set about encouraging him to emerge somewhat sooner.

Thank you to the endless stream of well-wishers, in person and online. Heaven forbid I ever confuse myself with the People Who Matter. The blogosphere is just a self-selecting collection of people who understand American Exceptionalism and will not suffer the Progressives to offer inferior, unaffordable substitutes for liberty.

Restated: offer me no admiration; offer me action in support of the Constitution.

He Made It to the Third Sentence

David Brooks wrote two sentences before he lost me:

Over the past months, Republicans enjoyed enormous advantages. Opinion polls showed that voters are eager to reduce the federal debt, and they want to do it mostly but not entirely through spending cuts.
There was a Democratic president eager to move to the center.

Right. Obama — the guy whose pants creases David Brooks so admires — was “eager to move to center.”

Brooks then goes on to take cheap shots at Grover Norquist, Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, among others, and also includes this:

The talk-radio jocks are not in the business of promoting conservative governance. They are in the business of building an audience by stroking the pleasure centers of their listeners.

Whose “pleasure centers” is David Brooks stroking, huh?

Obligatory ‘Chris Matthews Says Something Stupid’ Video Post

Richard McEnroe at Three Beers Later called attention to this yesterday:

David Corn says “the Republicans have depicted themselves as hostage-takers who are ready to blow things up and the public doesn’t like this” — which is both untrue and stupid. Pat Buchanan then attempted to defend Republicans and the Tea Party movement.

This evidently inspired Chris Matthews to re-assert his claim to championship of the Liberal Stupidity Derby:

“The whole idea is to separate this idea of ideological warfare you [i.e., Buchanan] enjoy from the need to keep the government from default. You seem to be one of the happy Indians. By the way, the tea partiers, the original ones, dressed up like Indians and put on a little show. These guys are running around burning down houses. It’s a different kind of tea party,”

Whatever you think of the “Cut, Cap and Balance” bill that passed the House yesterday, it is at least something. Obama’s got nothing, and Obama’s spokesman Jay Carney says nothing is better than something.

‘The Undefeated’ Will Be Attacked With The Usual Non-Falsifiable Proposition

by Smitty

LEIPZIG, GERMANY Howard Towt identifies a direction that the country needs to move in: a dispassionate viewer of the discourse. As you read his review, he’s underwhelmed by The Undefeated.
Towt notes that TU is mostly built upon Going Rogue, which sold an awful lot of copies. If GR were fiction, there would be the question of the artistic tradeoffs of moving it to a screen. As we are talking about a political documentary, the proposition moves toward something like:

“They didn’t explain the background of the events sufficiently.”

We’ll see. Towt’s general criticism, as paraphrased above, seems non-falsifiable. That is, there was always more exposition that the film maker could have done. Except that you have to swing the editorial axe somewhere. The audience is near bursting with the run time as it is. Look for extended versions on sale, as Victory Films cashes in, with more fixes for the serious junkies out there.
More interesting to me is the second-hand smoke from the Democrat wife:

The film is inspirational, but my wife was completely put off by the whole experience. She sees Governor Palin as opportunistic and calculating, and thinks the governor is using politics as a “get rich quick” scheme. She believes Mrs. Palin is an inadequate mother to her children, and is a person who plays to a base of religious fundamentalists. Her take is that Sarah Palin as an affront to sensible women everywhere.
My wife is a testament to the power of our American culture. In a few short months, our culture has fashioned an extreme caricature of a female political figure, and has made it believable. Just three years ago, very few people outside of Alaska knew who Sarah Palin was. Now, a large number of Americans have been taught to despise her.

Fair enough, Mrs. Towt, but the last non-opportunistic and non-calculating U.S. political figure was. . .George Washington, maybe?
Can we get past Pavlovian training on both the Left and Right? If we’re worried about whether a candidate is black, or attractive, or equestrian, or pedigreed, or loquacious, we risk being lost in the superficialities that are at the root of the present crisis.
Now, I don’t want to badmouth Mrs. Towt, but I do know a couple of Leftys. I’m confident that they are, for all their purported liberality, incapable of any fair appraisal of Governor Sarah Palin. I had to move away from one of these Lefty chicks melting down at a breakfast table at the mention of her name a couple of months back, at Bagram. Admittedly, I’ve seen similar visceral (albeit non-racist) reactions to the sitting POTUS. I do think that the policies espoused of one of these figures are mostly daft, but I can’t understand directing emotion at the person, except as an admission that Alinsky was correct. Personalizing everything makes radicalism possible.
But really, let’s remember that this is not just a documentary; it’s not just a chance to line Sarah Palin’s wallet; it’s a running plebiscite on the screw-us quo of American politics. The Ruling Class Overlords on the Right and Left have been pissing down your back and telling you it’s raining for a century now. The GOP Ruling Class Overlords have been playing a nominally more Federalist hand over the last century; Governor Palin is cheerfully breaking that off where they sit.
It’s hyperbole to say that, if the people blow off this movie, and she sits out the 2012 campaign, that we’re doomed. We can’t have a meaningful Constitution if the salvation of the country boils down to any one person, family, clique, or union.
But the list of other hopefuls with significant charisma is painfully short.

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz Is ‘Vile … Despicable … Coward,’ Says Allen West

About time someone said it:

From: Z112 West, Allen
Sent: Tuesday, July 19, 2011 04:48 PM
To: Wasserman Schultz, Debbie
Cc: McCarthy, Kevin; Blyth, Jonathan; Pelosi, Nancy; Cantor, Eric
Subject: Unprofessional and Inappropriate Sophomoric Behavior from Wasserman-Schultz
Look, Debbie, I understand that after I departed the House floor you directed your floor speech comments directly towards me. Let me make myself perfectly clear, you want a personal fight, I am happy to oblige. You are the most vile, unprofessional ,and despicable member of the US House of Representatives. If you have something to say to me, stop being a coward and say it to my face, otherwise, shut the heck up. Focus on your own congressional district!
I am bringing your actions today to our Majority Leader and Majority Whip and from this time forward, understand that I shall defend myself forthright against your heinous characterless behavior……which dates back to the disgusting protest you ordered at my campaign hqs, October 2010 in Deerfield Beach.
You have proven repeatedly that you are not a Lady, therefore, shall not be afforded due respect from me!
Steadfast and Loyal
Congressman Allen B West (R-FL)

The Lonely Conservative has video of the obnoxious speech in which Debbie Wasserman-Schultz violated decorum by speaking ill of a member not present:

UPDATE: And in a column at Red County, Rep. West says: “I must confess, when I see anyone with an Obama 2012 bumper sticker, I recognize them as a threat to the gene pool.”

UPDATE II: Dave C. at Point of a Gun reminds us that Wasserman-Schultz campaigned against West last year.

UPDATE III: Linked by Donald Douglas at American Power — thanks!

GOP Dept. of Media Relations

Doug Ross of ABC News gets roughed up by Michele Bachmann’s security:

Ross dashed after Bachmann, repeatedly asking whether she had ever missed a House vote due to a migraine. She ignored him. Ross pursued her into a parking area behind the stage. Her aides grew alarmed. When Ross made a beeline for the white SUV waiting to carry Bachmann away, two Bachmann men pounced on him, grabbing and pushing him multiple times with what looked to me like unusual force. In fact, I have never seen a reporter treated so roughly at a campaign event, especially not a presidential one.

Not since Dede Scozzafava called the cops on John McCormack of the Weekly Standard has any Republican campaign so badly mishandled the press.

Sometimes I’ve offered advice to Republicans on how to deal with the press, but they always ignore me and instead pay big money for advice from “media strategists” who’ve never worked a day in a newsroom.

I try not to think about that. It gives me headaches.

UPDATE: Old Line Elephant responds to the “incapacitated by migraines” story, noting that Bachmann doesn’t seem to have missed a lot of votes. Bachmann issues a statement noting that millions of other Americans also suffer from migraine headaches.

UPDATE II: The New York Times has an excellent source:

“She would not in any respect meet the definition for not having capacity in one of these episodes,” Dr. Lucas Bachmann, the candidate’s son and a medical resident at the University of Connecticut, said in a telephone interview. “She is probably not going to run a mile, but in terms of being able to engage, she can comprehend and assess information — without a doubt.”
