Prayers for Andrew Lawton

He is that rara avis, a Good Canadian:
There has been no major news in the last couple days about Andrew, who remains in stable (but critical) condition and in a medically-induced coma. Doctors have taken him off one medication and have reduced others and he’s tolerating the new regimen well, which is a small bit of good news. His family has no timetable for when he might be well enough to come out of the coma, but we continue to pray for the soonest recovery he can make.

You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught

“One has to belong to the intelligentsia to believe things like that: no ordinary man could be such a fool.”
— George Orwell, “Notes on Nationalism”
“In the hands of a skillful indoctrinator, the average student not only thinks what the indoctrinator wants him to think . . . but is altogether positive that he has arrived at his position by independent intellectual exertion. This man is outraged by the suggestion that he is the flesh-and-blood tribute to the success of his indoctrinators.”
– William F. Buckley Jr., Up From Liberalism (1959)
“In my experience, it’s very difficult to discuss an issue with someone who has their mind already made up.”
— Anna Tarkov, “Got raped? It’s your own fault, you filthy whore.”
Some prejudices are the result of ignorance. Others are the result of what can only be described as indoctrination. And in a politically correct age, the rigid mental categories involved in feminism are an expression of such a prejudice. Once these categories become fixed in the mind, every phenomenon must be interpreted within that rigid framework.
Education properly ought to teach a respect for facts — facts are stubborn things, as John Adams observed — and a respect for facts ought to make us skeptical of mere theory. Skepticism will increase, the more we observe facts that don’t fit the categories involved in the theoretical abstractions promulgated by the intelligentsia. Sooner or later, the accumulation of contradictory facts must convince a reasonable person that the theory they have been “carefullly taught” is false.
“As for RSM, I respectfully disagree. He is a misogynist through and through. Misogyny, as you’re probably familiar, is a cultural hatred of women simply because they are female. It can be manifested in many different ways from off-color jokes to pornography to believing women should feel ashamed of their bodies. A misogynist might still have functional friendships with women or be married or have daughters. It doesn’t change the fact that he hates women.”
— Anna Tarkov, “Got raped? It’s your own fault, you filthy whore.”
That’s two panels from today’s “Day by Day” comic strip by Chris Muir and, by all means, read the whole thing.
UPDATE: In the comments, Sissy Willis quotes Thomas Sowell on the 2006 resignation of Lawrence Summers as president of Harvard University:
“Even if every conclusion with which students are indoctrinated were true, unless those students develop their own ability to weigh opposing arguments, these conclusions will become obsolete as new issues arise in the years ahead. These ‘educated’ people will have developed no ability to analyze opposing sides of issues.
“Students are getting half an education at inflated prices and learning only how to label, dismiss and demonize ideas that differ from what they have been led to believe. Their ‘educated’ ignorance is a danger to the future of this country.”
Summers, a liberal Democrat in good standing, made the mistake of publicly suggesting that perhaps the relative rarity of top women research scientists was the result of something other than sexist discrimination.
Some thoughts are impermissible among the intelligentsia.
More Assange-Related Feminist Meltdown

Moe Tkacik is a female writer for the Washington City Paper who wrote an article mocking the rape charges against Julian Assange. She included the names of his accusers, Anna Ardin, 31, and Sofia Wilen, 26.
The names of Assange’s accusers are not secret. The Sydney Morning Herald and umpteen jillion liberal blogs have named Ardin and Wilen. But evidently the combination of (a) mocking the rape charges, (b) naming the accusers, and (c) being a woman made Moe Tkacik a perfect scapegoat for feminist blogger Sady Doyle, who sent 37 Tweets to Tkacik including this one:
“@MoeTkacik ‘OH GOD.’ You’re so funny & ironic & over it! Oh, except for the fact that two women MIGHT GET MURDERED. Whoops? #MooreandMe.”
Uh, yeah. And the people threatening Ardin and Wilen are . . . ?
Yes, that’s right: Anti-American leftist moonbats!
Has Sady Doyle ever written a word condemning the anti-American leftist moonbats who made death threats against Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter? I’m going to guess “no.”
Every conservative who has ever been in an argument with the Left (a group that includes Doyle, Assange, Assange’s accusers, and the people making death threats against Assange’s accusers) is familiar with their typical mode of discourse: You have the right to your opinion, unless you disagree with them, in which case they start TYPING SCARY THINGS IN ALL CAPS LIKE THIS!
And because Sady Doyle is a feminist, she enjoys using liberated words like “c*nt” and “b*tch” and “sh*t” and “f*ck” — sometimes IN ALL CAPS!
Anyway, Donald Douglas at American Power is all over the story of Doyle’s campaign to get Tkacik fired, and addresses Doyle:
Moe’s road kill on the superhighway to the feminist utopia. Deal with it.
Global Warming Update: Blizzard Edition
Posted on | December 25, 2010 | 15 Comments
Chattanooga gets its first White Christmas in more than 40 years:
We don’t get a lot of snow where I live, but today we’re getting blanketed. The last time we had a white Christmas (with any accumulation) was in 1969. That was several years before I was born.
So naturally, that got me thinking about the looming global warming crisis.
CNN reports on your holiday Gore-cast:
Snow fell in parts of the southeast Saturday, the leading edge of a powerful storm system that has prompted blizzard warnings in New York City and Boston and threatened to cause major travel headaches at the tail end of the holiday week.
The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for the New York City metropolitan area, from northeast New Jersey through Newark and New York, and including the entirety of both the Long Island and Connecticut coasts of the Long Island Sound. That warning is in effect between 6 a.m. Sunday and 6 p.m. Monday.
Forecasters predict between 11 to 16 inches of blowing snow in much of that region, bringing visibility to near zero at times. Sustained winds as strong as 30 miles per hour could hit Sunday night, with gusts up to 55 mph in parts of central and eastern Long Island.
And, starting at noon Sunday and extending through 6 p.m. Monday, a similar warning is out for all of Rhode Island and most of eastern Massachusetts.
Y’know, when liberals decided to politicize the weather, we should have seen this coming. Jammie Wearing Fool catches liberals arguing that the snowstorm is somehow the result of man-made environmental damage:
The gulf stream is blocked with the oil spill that BP created. This has been confirmed by several scientist here in the US. It will have a devastating effect on the US east coast and parts of Europe, including the UK for years to come.
What special kind of stupid is required to believe that an oil spill could “block” the Gulf Stream? In any controversy, you’ll seldom be wrong if you’ll follow this two-step plan:
- Find out what side the liberals are on; and
- Get on the other side.

. . . I’m pretty sure “anal cancer” would be near the top of your list:
U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of Gardasil (human papillomavirus vaccine) has been widened to include prevention of anal cancer and associated precancerous lesions, the agency said in a news release.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with about 90% of the estimated 5,300 cases of anal cancer diagnosed in the United States each year, the FDA said, citing statistics from the American Cancer Society. More women are diagnosed than men.
The latest approval for Gardasil covers people aged 9 to 26. The vaccine was previously approved for the same age group to prevent cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancers in females, and for genital warts among both sexes …
Hmmm. The story said nothing about how people get this nasty carcinogenic virus in their anuses. It’s just so mysterious . . .
WikiLeaks: The Movie?

“How long will it be before Hollywood makes a movie glorifying Wikileaks ringleader Julian Assange?
“Not long! Hollywood, after all, has a long and sordid history of making movie heroes out of left-wing villains, con men and charlatans.”
— John Guardiano, “Coming Soon to a Theater Near You: Assange, The Movie”
What we need is an Army of Photoshoppers to do movie posters for the Assange biopic, perhaps cleverly parodying various other movies.
How Narcissists Govern: Obama Bans Word ‘Triangulation’ at White House
Posted on | December 25, 2010 | 15 Comments
As if, by banning this Clinton-era phrase, he can avoid the political necessity of imitating Clintonism:
Despite all his time studying the Clinton administration, Mr. Obama told his aides that he had no intention of following the precise path of Mr. Clinton, who after the Democratic midterm election defeats of 1994 ordered a clearing of the decks inside the White House, installed competing teams of advisers and employed a centrist policy of triangulation. In fact, several advisers confirmed, the word “triangulation” has been banned by Mr. Obama because he does not believe it accurately describes his approach.
Obama’s correct. To accurately describe his approach would require three words: “One-term president.”

‘Good Tidings of Great Joy’
Posted on | December 25, 2010 | 7 Comments
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
— Luke 2:8-14 (KJV)
