Death by Consultantitis (Cont’d)

An attack blog in Georgia goes after Republicans, and Dan Riehl reminds us:

I spent the past year telling Republicans they would lose seats on the margins from attacks channeled through a network of progressive blogs spanning all fifty states. But they were too busy gloating about their alleged dominance in new media thanks to Twitter accounts, Facebook pages and expensive new media consultants without a clue as to what’s actually happening on the ground.

Singling out the GOP’s reliance on New Media consultants — as opposed to actually supporting New Media — is crucial to understanding what Dan is driving at here.

In general, there has been a misallocation of resources by the people who write the checks and hold the purse-strings in Republican politics. Nothing illustrates the disconnect between money and brains in the GOP than a fact highlighted by Jimmie Bise: Charlie Crist raised $4.3 million in a single three-month period of 2009. Read more

OK, Jimmie Bise, Steven Crowder and Fingers Malloy Are Smart, But . . . Girls?

Posted on | September 30, 2010 | 43 Comments

All the ladybloggers are excited about Smart Girl Summit, which starts today at the fabulous Hyatt Regency in Arlington, Va.: Michelle Bachmann, Liz Cheney, Tammy Bruce, Anita Moncrief, Dana Loesch . . . I mean, wow, who wouldn’t be excited by such an all-star lineup of conservative women?

So I’m thinking, maybe I should write something about how all the ladybloggers are getting together for the big event, and I’m going down the conference schedule for Friday and . . . Hey, wait:

You see what I mean? This has become a disturbing pattern. It’s as if every time someone starts planning a major gathering of conservative bloggers, the planning process always begins with the same decision: “Whatever you do, don’t invite Stacy McCain.”

The first couple of times I got viciously snubbed like this, my friends assured me that I was just being oversensitive, perhaps even slightly paranoid. But it kept happening over and over, at conference after conference, until I began to notice subtle little hints that indeed I was not welcome.

So this time, I really wasn’t surprised to discover that the organizers of Smart Girl Summit felt that I had nothing worthwhile to say on the subject of “Using Humor to Maximum Effect.” What did surprise me was when I saw the logo on their Web site . . .  Read more

Guess Who Flew Into The Area For A Bit Of Campaigning Last Weekend?

by Smitty

not so much pig and man, but plenty of bearI’m not saying that “Gentleman” Jim Moran is, you know, incontinent at the thought of having a non-Ruling Class American tell him to stand and deliver for his two decades of largesse, but look what happened.
Jim Moran had to summon the infamous Anthropogenic Global Warming Climate Change Disruption fraudster, Nobel medalist, Academy awardee, renowned Doctor of Chakra-ology and Clinton Administration doorstop, Al Gore, to whip up the robots.
Fairfax Democrats were kind enough to link about three minutes of Saint Albert, but not actually make the video available at the link. OK, a YouTube search on “Al Gore Jim Moran” turned up what appears to be the clip, under some user name murray4pollution. Probably the same blokes at Fairfax Democrats, but not wanting to Gore up their regular account. Perfectly understandable.
I’m going to go out on a limb and venture that Patrick Murray has never endorsed pollution or polluting, and may be mildly surprised that someone would attempt to suggest he had.
In any case, here is the clip:
My informal transcript:

…he truly deserves it.
It’s a joy for me to be here and speak for him and to join with all of you in providing support for this campaign. And the reasons are many. I won’t go into all of them. But most of you know very well that Jim has done an outstanding job.
I’ve paid particular attention to his work on the environment and the climate crisis. And he’s been fantastic, and has taken tough decisions, courageous decisions, wise decisions, and has provided real leadership, and of course, he has worked his way up to the point now where he is in a position of real leadership. A member of the Steering and Policy Committee, part of the formal leadership. Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, and that’s a big deal, as all of you know.
And a very, very respected voice on issues from the environment and energy, to civil rights and equal justice for all Americans. And of course, that’s core to who we are as Americans. And each successive generation has its own new challenges to expand the tremendous dream and vision that led to the founding of this country in the first place. Jim has been true to the American spirit all the way along the line.
He’s also been very prescient. He was one of those who was calling for a reexamination of some of the practices that allowed the offshore drilling disaster in the Gulf of Mexico before that thing took place, and has been calling for more inspections and all the rest, and really has been a leader on protecting Virginia’s coast, cleaning up the Chesapeake bay, fighting for cleaner water, cleaner air, a better environment, a better future. These things are, of course, are really important.
And when you look at the contrast with the other side, his opponent is calling for, you know, doubling down on the hair of the dog that bit us, as Damon Runyon once wrote. More fossil fuels. Let’s just go back and. . .more drilling and more carbon pollution and pretend that’s going to solve the problem. And of course, it’s not.
Jim has also been very attentive to this district, and I don’t need to tell this crowd this, on all the infrastructure issues, and employment issues, and all of the major measures that affect the flows of revenue into this district. He knows how to get in there and slug it out and get the results for his constituents.

In summary, “Gentleman” Jim Moran is a tool, a tool’s tool, and a preferred tool for the extension of the vast Federal machine that has weakened the States, and brought you crippling levels of debt.
Employing Al Gore to raise support here is like Barney Frank reaching for Bill Clinton in Massachusetts. Well, maybe not reaching in quite the same way, but the desperation is clear; the Patrick Murray insurgency, along with the general anti-Democrat mood, has “Gentleman” Jim in fear.

PATRICK MURRAY for U.S. CONGRESS

Aside: then vs. now, via Flopping Aces. Al Gore’s 1992 attack on Bush41 for ignoring Iraq’s terrorist ties under Saddam. Oh, that zany Gore.

There’s Crazy, and Then There’s Crazy

Posted on | September 29, 2010 | 11 Comments

How crazy was it that I got to hang out with Todd Palin and got Tweeted by Alyssa Milano in the same month? But I am, after all, a professional journalist and these gonzo adventures are just part of what I do for a living. (Hey, have you hit the tip jar yet?)

On the other hand, Shawn R. Christy has no such excuse:

Sarah Palin obtained a protective order Monday against an 18-year-old Pennsylvania man who sent her receipts from a gun purchase, along with a letter saying “he tried to follow the Bible but had evil and wickedness in him.” . . .
Palin’s friend, Kristan Cole, 48, filed for and received a similar protective order against Christy.
The 20-day protective orders Anchorage Magistrate Colleen Ray signed Monday prohibit Christy from following, approaching, confronting, watching or otherwise staking or threatening to stalk or assault Palin or Cole.
The protective orders say Christy has been stalking the families since 2009. Cole said she became concerned about Christy’s letters and e-mails for months, but it ended up in court yesterday after the man called her to say his plane had landed in Alaska. . . .

My advice to Shawn Christy: Start taking your meds again, at least until you get those obsessive delusions under control.

Assuming that you can, at some future point, attain some semblance of psychological normality, you might consider a career as a professional journalist, where you actually have a legitimate excuse to talk to important people. If, however, you continue to be batshit crazy . . .

Well, Keith Olbermann has managed to make a living somehow.

GOP SCANDAL: Which Senators Are Protecting Backstabber Lisa Murkowski?

Posted on | September 29, 2010 | 43 Comments

When she lost the GOP primary in August, she refused to concede, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee flew its top lawyer to Anchorage to advise her. When the absentee ballots were finally counted, Murkowski conceded the Republican nomination — but secretly continued her desperate intrigues to retain her Senate seat. In a shameful course of action that would make notorious Catilline blush, Murkowski’s Palin-hating henchmen John Bitney and Andrew Halcro first sought to get her the Libertarian Party nomination. Rebuffed by the Libertarians, the Bitney/Halcro faction then promoted Murkowski as a write-in candidate.

Despite Murkowski’s perfidy, in a secret meeting last week, Senate Republicans declined to strip her of her status as ranking member of the Energy Committee. And now National Review is asking the important question: Which GOP Senators are protecting Murkowski, enabling her to tell Alaska voters that her Senate seniority is an asset worth retaining?

The answer, so far, seems to be “some of the usual suspects”:

[Lindsey] Graham tells us that he is “OK” with Murkowski keeping her ranking status.

Worthless bastard.

Ann Coulter + Gays = MEDIA OUTRAGE!

Posted on | September 29, 2010 | 20 Comments

How dare she speak to gay people about “civil rights”! That’s the MSM take on Ann Coulter’s speech to GOProud, as the magnificent Lisa DePasquale reports:

I was fortunate to be a guest of Coulter’s at a New York City cocktail party where she gave a short speech and did Q&A with GOProud, a group of conservative-minded gays. Unsurprisingly, Coulter stuck to her principles by defending traditional marriage between one man and one woman. They were completely charmed and loved every minute of the repartee. What’s a reporter to make of a crowded room of open-minded conservatives with Ann Coulter at the helm? Lie, of course!
Politico reported that there was “nervous laughter” when Coulter addressed the frequent argument that gay marriage is a civil right and akin to denying blacks their rights. Coulter pointed out, both with truth and in jest, “Gays have the highest income of any demographic group in America. Blacks must be looking at gay rights activists in bewilderment thinking, ‘Why couldn’t we be oppressed like that?’” . . .

Read the whole thing at Human Events.

One of the points I have tried to make — more by example than by lecturing — is that it is possible to be opposed in principle to the Official Gay Rights Agenda™ without being “homophobic” (a term requiring scare-quotes due to its pseudo-diagnostic implications).

Too many well-meaning people are motivated by guilt or fear — and perhaps a desire to pose as morally superior to others — in expressing support for the Official Gay Rights Agenda™ (OGRA), just as many people are motivated by similar sentiments to support other pet liberal causes. Most who have doubts about such radicalism are intimidated into silence, and thus permit the OGRA radicals to believe they can win through suppressing dissent.

Back in the 1980s, for example, it became fashionable on elite college campuses to demand “divestment” from South Africa. Administrations at Dartmouth, among other schools, were besieged by smelly student protesters clamoring for the university to end any investment in any company that did any business with the apartheid regime.

To question the wisdom of such demands was equivalent, in the rhetoric of the protest pests, to being “pro-apartheid.” Pointing out that such an accusation was illogical — e.g., might it not be the case that an economic boycott would hurt the people it was intended to help? — only inflamed the rage of the protesters. It became obvious to rational critics that the entire point of the “divestment” campaign was for the Left to flaunt its obnoxious self-righteousness, without regard for the real interests of black South Africans.

“How dare you . . .?” This is how liberals always answer those who dare question the moral superiority of liberalism.

How dare you doubt that cramming poor people into public housing is a wise and humane policy? How dare you suggest that the Carter-era “deinstitutionalization” of mental patients did more to cause the homeless problem than did the policies Ronald Reagan? And how dare you question whether an all-or-nothing push for goverment-licensed same-sex marriage is necessary to the “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness” of homosexuals?

Ann Coulter is an intellectual daredevil, and she’s now on Twitter, where you should follow her immediately. Everyone is now breathlessly awaiting the moment when Keith Olbermann takes notice of Ann’s Twitter presence, igniting the final apocalyptic battle of Twittergeddon.

I’ll pop some popcorn . . .

(NOTE: Thanks to the commenter who pointed out that Coulter is an alumnus of Cornell University, where she wrote for the Cornell Review. I had originally described her as an alumnus of Dartmouth College, evidently having confused her with such prominent conservative Dartmouth alumni as Laura Ingraham and Dinesh D’Souza.)
