Matt Welch: Meh

by Smitty (h/t Insty)

It’s something of a tangent from Welch’s main point over at Reason, but his characterization of conservatives as unsophisticated is exactly that:

Speaking only for myself, I don’t see libertarianism moving rightward, I see rightward moving libertarian. Which is to be expected, what with the whole not-having-power thing (as Kilgore points out, the Democrats’ wilderness years included such incongruities as Markos Moulitsas penning “libertarian Democrat” manifestos).

I submit that there’s a longer-term trend afoot which is overlooked here. The chief metric is the debt, but there is an increasing realization that the Constitution needn’t mean a government homogeneous from top to bottom; one can argue a libertarian Federal government and free up room for 50 vibrantly different States covering the Red/Blue spectrum.

Common sense hints that the wrong-headedness of Socialism in the Blue states is going to kill those States over time, but shouldn’t them godless Blue State Commies welcome their Darwinian recompense? No. No, they don’t: they just reach for more wallets.

Many libertarians already treat the Tea Party movement (and more than that, Sarah Palin) with 10-foot tongs, and it won’t take many more Joe Farah/Tom Tancredo Tea Party-branded speeches to expose many of the conservative/libertarian cracks that were so evident during the Bushitler years.

So, any tinfoil hat fringe whacko racist goober must be conservative, because libertarians cannot, by definition, be nutcases? To those libertarians I’d say “Thank you sir, may I have another?”

As for welfare and all that, again this is just me talking, but I have never for one second in my life used or thought the phrase “welfare queen” to mean anything besides one of those Evil Corporations my liberal pals are so afraid of. I don’t give one shit about ACORN, wouldn’t vote for Sarah Palin at gunpoint, and don’t look down the rostrum at that nice Center for American Progress colleague fretting about their private thoughts.

And if Governor Palin’s actual platform, when published, veers libertarian, what then? The endorsement of Rand Paul–what does that mean? Nice to know that you’ll vote for Hillary in 2012, just to save yourself from Governor Palin’s atrocious accent. Accents matter, you know.

What I do care about, regardless of who’s president, is human freedom and prosperity. And I strongly and consistently suspect that when the government accumulates more power, I and everyone else (except those wielding it) have less of which I seek. Republicans diss libertarians when they’re in power, and Democrats diss libertarians when they’re in power. Their changing attitudes toward our little (albeit growing) tribe is mildly interesting, but it’s about as newsworthy (and painful) as a dog biting a chew toy.

The truth behind this statement is that Republicans and Democrats are both conferences of the Progressive Political Football League. Kudos to Ron Paul for fighting the good fight, but the simple matter is that Americans of any stripe have been totally asleep at the switch for a century.
Possibly we can focus on a united, Constitutional, strongly libertarian front to set about fixing matters.  Some of your allies may be given to outbursts of religious, super-rational altruism as they set about rejecting the Divine Federal Government.  This does not make them Untouchables.  It’ll be OK, Matt.

Obviously, the Solution to Our Nation’s Most Pressing Problems Is . . .

. . . more Ann Hathaway boobies. That seems to be the agenda at Classic Liberal, at least, and who are we to argue? Even though Anne’s breasts have ceased to be Catholic, they nevertheless continue to exercise a miraculous influence:

What other problems could be solved by Anne Hathaway’s perky breasts? I’m pretty sure they could have prevented Lawrence O’Donnell from melting down on MSNBC:

We expect VodkaPundit to contend that the demonstrable awesomeness of Anne Hathaway’s sweater puppies is equalled or exceeded by Christina Hendricks’ thoracic magnificence.

Fortune Musters J’Accuse, Re-ignites Al’s Trousers

This week’s FMJRA salutes Real Men of Bear Pig.

“Real Men of Bear Pig…”

Trading up the the authority of my old job, plus sympathy from dupes over a setback in 2000, for a couple of awards and a lucrative perpetual guilt machine that blew up in your face in the last 90 days, culminating in a Copenhagen farce, and chased by a record-braking blizzard, a winter even you can’t flee, which hit hard your old digs, back when you were merely held in semi-contempt for hanging around Bill Clinton.

Instapundit Interviews Les Phillip

This was sort of a carom shot of my Alabama trip. My Monday American Spectator column included two paragraphs about Les Phillip, who is running for Congress in Alabama’s 5th District. Friday night, after the state GOP meeting in Montgomery, Ali Akbar and I hung out with Phillip — who smokes cigars — on the veranda of the lobby bar at the Renaissance Hotel. (Photo here.)

Professor Reynolds highlighted Phillip when he linked the column. So, Tuesday night I’m driving home through a blizzard when my cell phone rings and it’s Ali, calling from Phillips HQ in Madison, Ala.: “Glenn Reynolds is on the phone with Les right now!” And today his column appears in the Wall Street Journal with this:

One of the less-noted aspects of Mrs. Palin’s speech was her endorsement of primary challenges for incumbent Republicans, something that is already underway. Tea partiers I talked to hope to replace a lot of entrenched time-servers and to throw a scare into others.
One primary challenger is Les Phillip. He is running against Republican Parker Griffith in Alabama’s fifth congressional district. Mr. Phillip, a black businessman and Navy veteran who immigrated with his parents from Trinidad in his youth, got his start in politics speaking at a tea-party protest in Decatur, Ala., last year.
“Somebody had to speak,” he told me, “so I stepped up.” He did well enough that he was invited to speak at another protest in Trussville, Ala., after which things sort of snowballed. Of the tea partiers, he says, “Their values are pretty much mine. I live in a town in North Alabama where there are plenty of blacks driving Mercedes and living in big houses. Only in America can someone come from a little island and live the dream. I’ve liked it, and that’s what I want for my children. [But] I saw the window closing for my own kids.”
Mr. Phillip has gotten tea-party endorsements, as well as one from Mike Huckabee. The Republican establishment is siding with Mr. Griffith, who only recently switched from Democrat to Republican. That support is perhaps understandable as realpolitik, but it’s not the sort of thing that sits well with tea partiers, who think that too much realpolitik is what rendered the Republican Party corrupt and ossified over the past decade.

Read the whole thing. In another one of those small-world coincidences, Professor Reynolds also mentions Angela McGlowan, whom I profiled in a 2007 feature article for the Washington Times when she published her book Bamboozled., and who is now running for Congress in Missisissippi’s 1st District.

A little humor: At one point during our conversation Friday, I made a reference to which Les responded, “I know. I Googled you.”

Lies! All lies!

Professor Is Denied Tenure, Opens Fire in University Faculty Meeting, 3 Dead

Unusual and tragic violence:

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) – Police said a female member of the UA-Huntsville faculty shot and killed three co-workers on campus.
Sources close to the investigation identify the suspect as Dr. Amy Bishop.
Police also have the alleged shooter’s husband in custody. He has not been formally charged with anything.
University spokesman Ray Garner said the three killed were G. K. Podila, the chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences, and two associates, Maria Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson. . . .
Authorities said Bishop, during a Biology faculty meeting, learned she would not receive tenure. She then pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Wow. Denied tenure = murder rampage? There’s more from the New York Times:

“She began to talk about her problems getting tenure in a very forceful and animated way, saying it was unfair,” the associate said, referring to a conversation in which she blamed specific colleagues for her problems.
“She seemed to be one of these persons who was just very open with her feelings,” he said. “A very smart, intense person who had a variety of opinions on issues.”

Obviously, I’m expected to add some snark here, but there’s three people dead and so I’m not feeling particularly snarky.

Keith Olbermann Once Again Displays His Astonishing Lack of Self-Awareness

He begins by chastising Rush Limbaugh for having a huge ego — never mind that Rush’s audience on is at least 20 times as big as Olbermann’s, or that Olbermann is a 24K-gold-plated narcissist — and ends by predicting that Michelle Malkin will die in obscurity:

Olbermann’s career is one of the most spectacular failures in TV news history. There is no opportunity so ripe that he can’t find some way of squandering it. Even in the Smug Lefty Rodeo competition that is MSNBC, he’s rapidly losing out to Rachel Maddow. Think about that epitaph, Keith:

Here Lies Keith Olbermann, Who Was
Even Less Popular Than Rachel Maddow

Just sayin’ . . .

Would You Hire The Head Alcoholic From Your Local AA Chapter To Manage The Adult Beverage Store?

Rick Moran gives a great apology for Representative Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) plan, as reviewed in Forbes by Bruce Bartlett to do something, anything, about the federal debt. Working off the dead horse by the end of the next 70 years is indeed noble. Continue reading Would You Hire The Head Alcoholic From Your Local AA Chapter To Manage The Adult Beverage Store? →
