Our Criminal Media

Michelle Malkin rips into them good here:

With great fanfare and elite media sympathy, Jose Antonio Vargas publicly declared himself an “undocumented immigrant” this week. . . . In the felony-friendly pages of The New York Crimes — er, Times — the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist turned illegal-alien activist spilled the beans on all the illegal IDs he amassed over the years. He had documents coming out of his ears.
The Times featured full-color photos of Vargas’ fake document trove — including a a fake passport with a fake name, a fake green card and a Social Security card his grandfather doctored for him at a Kinko’s. He committed perjury repeatedly on federal I-9 employment eligibility forms. In 2002, while pursuing his journalism career goals, an immigration lawyer told him he needed to accept the consequences of his law-breaking and return to his native Philippines.
Following the rules would have meant a 10-year bar to reentry into America. Making false claims of citizenship is a felony offense. Document fraud is a felony offense. . . .

You should read the whole thing. The decision by the New York Times to publish Vargas’s column is a disgrace to the profession of journalism. In what alternative universe does it make sense to celebrate a man for committing forgery and perjury — crimes involving dishonest falsification — when that man is supposed to be practicing a craft devoted to truth-telling?

Please note that Vargas is a native Filipino, just like Michelle Malkin’s parents. But her parents obeyed the law — which, by the perverse logic of liberalism, somehow entitles liberals to shout “RAAAAACIST!” at their daughter. And the New York Times publishes a column by the admitted felon Vargas, but would never publish anything by Malkin.

KIA: Cars for Creeps? Company Claims Brazilian Agency’s Ad Was Unauthorized

Ace of Spades headlined this: “Kia Motors: Our New Cars Are As Hot As Sex With Very Young Children!” — which obviously isn’t a message the Korean automaker intended to send.

Jim Edwards of CBS business news headlined the story, “Kia’s Pedophile Ad Campaign Illustrates Everything Wrong With the Ad Business.” You will perhaps not be surprised that this ad campaign won an industry award . . . in France.

See the whole ad here. And see a second “Sleeping Beauty” ad here.

Aaron Worthing asks, “Can Someone Give Me a Non-Creepy Explanation For These Kia Ads?” Good question. The actual theme of the ad is: “A Different Temperature on Each Side: KIA Sportage With Dual Zone Air Conditioning.” But surely there was a way to call attention to the dual-zone AC feature without resorting to this kind of weirdness.

KIA claims it never approved or published these ads, and that the ads were created by a Brazilian agency without KIA’s authorization. In other words, the agency created the ads as a sort of mock-up specifically for the French competition. Edwards publishes the KIA statement:

Kia Motors America (KMA) has become aware of an offensive piece of advertising material that was created by an ad agency in Brazil that KMA has no business relationship with and has never worked with. This ad was not created in the U.S. by Kia Motors America or any of its marketing partners and does not reflect the opinions or values of KMA or Kia Motors Corporation. The ad is undoubtedly inappropriate, and on behalf of Kia Motors we apologize to those who have been offended by it. We can guarantee this advertisement has never and will never be used in any form in the United States, and our global headquarters in Seoul, South Korea is addressing the issue with the independent Brazilian distributor.

The agency apparently violated the competition rules, Edwards says: “This is a the second recent occasion in which a Brazilian ad agency has been caught entering an ad at Cannes that was not fully approved by a client.”

So it would appear that KIA is actually the victim rather than the perpetrator of this outrage, which leads us to other questions: Why did the agency think that this fake ad would be suitable for competition? And did the judges at the French competition really mean to encourage such themes in advertising?

Expecting the Unexpected

The media have nearly warn out an adverb — “Unexpectedly!” — in describing bad economic news in the past two years. So what should we expect when we read a sentence that begins like this?

“Few economists are predicting an
out-and-out return to recession, but . . .”

Which prompts concerns for the Lonely Conservative:

Um, are these the same economists who are caught by surprise week, after week, after week, when the miserable reports come out on new jobless claims?
I can see the headlines now: “Economists Caught Off Guard By Second Dip Into Recession.”

Apparently, CNN gave up on their usual “experts,” and resorted to wizards, necromancers and witch doctors. (And no, I don’t mean Tim Geithner and Ben Bernanke.)

But we don’t need crystal balls and Ouija boards to predict the economic future. If Greece goes belly-up, it’s doom.

Euro-Doom Looming?

The Standard & Poor 500 this week suffered its seventh week of losses in the past eight weeks, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average again closed below 12,000 on Friday. The problem? In a word, Europe:

“Everybody is trying to digest how the European debt situation is going to shake out,” said Jason Pride, director of investment strategy at Glenmede in Philadelphia, which manages about $20 billion. “They’re playing an expensive game of chicken with Greece because the downside of not passing a bailout for that country is effectively a financial system meltdown.” . . .

The outlook in Greece? Not so good:

A knife-edge vote in the Greek parliament on a new package of [spending] cuts is expected on Wednesday, with [socialist prime minister George] Papandreou desperately needing to convince his reluctant backbench MPs to approve the measures.
If Greece refuses to accept more austerity measures, the consequences for Greece, the EU and indeed the global economy could be dire.

“The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money,” Margaret Thatcher once observed, and for Greece, “eventually” is now.

The Beast of Babylon Wears Bangs: Amanda Marcotte’s ‘Pure Feminist Evil’

“I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication . . .”
— Revelation 13:3-4 (KJV)

Being a tolerant sort of person, I have sometimes entertained the thought that maybe Amanda Marcotte is merely misguided or ignorant, an idea I kicked around when she made a complete fool of herself over the Anthony Weiner scandal. But perhaps it is time to consider whether she is in fact deliberately and consciously evil.

To summarize the case briefly: 58-year-old Thomas Ball committed suicide a week ago by setting himself afire on the steps of a county courthouse in New Hampshire. As his last testament, he sent to the local newspaper a remarkable 10,000-word letter portraying himself as the victim of police, child-protective agencies and the court system. To this, Marcotte responded by describing the dead man as a typical “abuser” whose only desire was to “make [his] ex-wife’s life a living hell . . . in an effort to hurt the woman they’re fixated on.”

As one blogger observed: “It’s pure feminist evil. . . . A man whose life was destroyed by anti-family courts burns himself to death, but Marcotte thinks a woman is the hardest hit.”

Indeed, Marcotte’s attitude is “pure feminist evil”: No matter the facts of the case, in any male-female conflict, the man is always to blame (unless he’s a liberal Democrat like Anthony Weiner or Bill Clinton, in which case he must be worshipped without reservation). Marcotte once again demonstrates how feminist rhetoric about “equality” is actually a dishonest demand for hegemonic female supremacy, insofar as feminism is really anything more than a partisan political tactic to trick stupid women into voting for liberal Democrats.
