The Low-Hanging Fruit of Feminism

Posted on | February 9, 2015 | 98 Comments

Andrea Grimes (@andreagrimes) used to be a pro-life Christian, until she went to college: “Suddenly: I was the dirty, filthy slut. I was the horny bitch.” By 2009, she had apparently contracted human papillomavirus (HPV) which resulted in cervical dysplasia — “atypical squamous cells” — a potentially pre-cancerous condition that required $5,000 in treatment.

This biographical background about Andrea Grimes is prelude to this: Did you know Columbia University has something with the Orwellian name of “Office of Gender-Based and Sexual Misconduct”? I did not know this until I read Cathy Young’s article at the Daily Beast describing Paul Nungesser’s nightmare as the Columbia student accused of raping feminist Emma Sulkowicz. The Daily Beast article spurred a lot of screeching from feminists last week, with Julie Zeilinger ranting about “a disheartening ignorance . . . gender stereotypes . . . idealized virginal purity and simplified fallacies.” It seems that the one possible explanation no feminist can accept in cases like this is the most obvious explanation: “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.”

The source of that saying, William Congreve, was probably a sexist pig, but (a) he’s been dead nearly 400 years, and (b) it’s true.

It is possible (although not necessary) to speculate what actually transpired between Nungesser and Sulkowicz on the night of Aug. 27, 2012. Both parties agree that they had sex, but Sulkowicz claims Nungesser began “choking and hitting her and then penetrated her anally while she struggled and screamed in pain.” Nungesser says none of the choking, hitting or screaming occurred, and that everything was consensual, including the anal penetration. It was more than six months later, in spring 2013, that Sulkowicz went to the aforementioned Office of Gender-Based and Sexual Misconduct, claiming Nungesser had raped her. In between, however, there were friendly communications between Nungesser and Sulkowicz — reproduced verbatim in Cathy Young’s article — that certainly seem sufficient as exculpatory evidence, considering that there is absolutely zero evidence to support Sulkowicz’s version of the story. Furthermore, it appears that Sulkowicz decided to accuse Nungesser of rape only after Sulkowicz talked to a girl who had been Nungesser’s girlfriend during their freshman year. After comparing notes, we might imagine, the two of them concluded that Nungesser was a selfish creep and (this being the Rape Culture Era) that they were victims of sexual assault. Nungesser was ultimately exonerated, which feminists say is an injustice, but to repeat: There was zero evidence against him.

And now it’s time to hear from Andrea Grimes:

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: But what if she’s lying?
That’s the gist of yet another take on yet another high-profile rape case, this time in the Daily Beast, whose writer Cathy Young trotted it out as the least counterintuitive of all possible premises when it comes to sexual violence. . . .

(Much ranting about victimhood and then . . .)

But there is patriarchy. A perfect, many-armed monster, which lives and thrives in this perfect universe of its own design. And it wields the perfect weapon: rape culture.
The longer we wait for the perfect case to try in the court of public opinion, the more opportunities this many-armed monster has to craft its ongoing attack on justice, to perpetuate a culture of shame and skepticism that silences those who would challenge it.
The monster is smart, and it knows where and when to hide and when to strike. Of course it does. The world is its playground, its lair, a welcoming cavern outfitted with comforting amenities like the phrase, But what if she’s lying. . . .
The monster moves with a kind of vicious grace, countering every attack with cool, collected reserve. Just, you know, asking honest, innocent questions: Why was she wearing that skirt? What was she doing out so late? . . . Why did they have so much to drink? Why did they keep dating? What’s up with those text messages?
Couldn’t it all just have been … a misunderstanding?

You can read the whole thing, if you care to see what kind of paranoid rationalizations feminists use when “the perfect case” they were attempting to “try in the court of public opinion” turns out to be no case at all. Rape is a serious crime, a felony, and given what we now know about the Nungesser case, he could not possibly be convicted of rape in a criminal court. If he cannot be proven guilty of a crime, how can Columbia University justify disciplinary punishment against Nungesser for “Gender-Based and Sexual Misconduct” which he denies and which his accusers cannot prove?

Exactly what system would this “dirty, filthy slut” Andrea Grimes wish to substitute for the due-process protections guaranteed by our Constitution to those accused of crimes? Exactly how is any male supposed to protect himself against the possibility of what we shall henceforth call the Sulkowicz Scenario, the casual sex partner who retroactively decides that an unhappy hookup was rape? Let us stipulate, arguendo, that Nungesser is a Bad Boyfriend and not very thoughtful or considerate as a sex partner. This does not make him a criminal, and trying to brand such a person a rapist is an act of spiteful vengeance.

Alas, if it weren’t for spiteful vengeance, there would be no feminist movement, inventing scapegoats — the “perfect, many-armed monster” of patriarchy — to exempt foolish women from responsibility for their own bad decisions. In the feminist worldview, all women are victimized by all men, so that the only question is how to inflict on men the punishment they deserve, for the crime of being male.

Does She Deny Being a Man-Hater?

Posted on | February 9, 2015 | 33 Comments

A curious omission in this Wilmington (Del.) News-Journal article:

When Ariel Friedlander decided to start a feminist club at her high school last year, some boys dismissed her as a man-hating lesbian and one girl threatened to excommunicate her friends if they dared to join.
A junior at the Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington, Friedlander was so frightened by the backlash that she created a private email list for interested students. When 30 showed up for the first meeting, she burst into tears from the positive response.
“It’s definitely been a big experiment,” says the visual arts major, citing a scarcity of similar groups at the high school level. . . .
In some high schools, girls and boys are gathering to screen feminist films, campaign against wage disparities and bring attention to sex trafficking, slut-shaming and rape jokes populating social media. . . .
Women’s empowerment is a “hot topic and the kids are paying attention,” says [Archmere Academy history teacher Kristen] Witte. . . .
There is also growing emphasis on “intersectional feminism,” which evaluates women’s rights in the context of LGBT rights, rights for minorities and the disabled.
“Every generation is facing these issues, though they may be slightly different,” says [program director Ashley] Steimer-King of Girls Learn International. . . .
Cab Calloway’s Feminist Club plans to host a tampon drive for homeless women and a clothing drive for transgendered women and men. . . .
Sexism didn’t disappear when women earned the right to vote, notes Friedlander. The group held an Equality Bake Sale on Newark’s Main Street last November, selling desserts for 77-cents each to women and $1 to men. The effort highlighted the gender pay gap.

Read the whole thing and notice that at no point is Ariel Friedlander quoted as denying that she is a man-hating lesbian.

Queering Valentine’s Day

Posted on | February 9, 2015 | 132 Comments

Two years ago, self-proclaimed “Queer Feminist” Sara Alcid complained about the heteronormativity of Valentine’s Day:

“Heteronormativity and gender roles also rear their ugly heads on Valentine’s Day. Gifts for ‘him’ or ‘her’ are clearly divided and marked and it’s almost impossible to find cards that represent queer couples. . . .
“It’s not hard to see why Valentine’s Day is problematic for many feminists. Celebrated traditionally, Valentine’s Day magnifies many of the very systems of domination that we work to critique and dismantle.”

Yes, it’s tragic that advertisers and greeting card companies aim their marketing efforts at the normal 98% of us, rather than pander to the 2% niche market of LGBT-OMG-BBQ-WTF.

In Canada, feminist Kayla Spagnoli — who was an organizer of SlutWalk Ottawa — is fighting against heteronormativity:

Pink Triangle Services has graciously let us use a board room at their office to host a feminist mixer to get together to make Valentine (or Anti-Valentine) Day cards.
We will be supplying card stock and supplies, as well as lots of non-hetero-normative, queer and non-binary card ideas! There will also be tea and candy.
This event is *FREE* but we are asking for a $5 donation if you are able to help cover some supplies and to give back to PTS.
PTS is a safe space*, we are asking everyone to be kind and considerate of the other attendees ie: ask for proper pronouns. Please no strong perfumes. There are non-binary washrooms available. There is an elevator if needed. PTS office is on the 2nd floor of the building.
PTS is having their Women’s Night who will also be welcomed to join.
Everyone is welcomed! Please spread this event.
#FemMixer #Ottawa
*friendly reminder that safe space is not the same as an empowered space.

Gee, Stacy, how do you find these kooks?”

You have to dive headfirst into the craziness, my friends. So I was searching Twitter for “heteronormativity” — one of the buzzwords of Women’s Studies, an academic swamp crowded with lesbian radicals — when I discovered Ms. Spagnoli boasting of her success in promoting her queer Valentine’s Day event on social media:

Curiosity led me to discover (a) she and her twin sister Jenna have a site called Feminist Twins, (b) Kayla was raised Catholic, (c) she’s bisexual, (d) she is a mortician and (e) she’s been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD).

Before we get to the mental illness, let’s hear about the sex part:

i had sex last night . . .
it was my second date. i knew by the first i would have sex with him.
there alot of different things I want to talk about here, its hard to narrow it down … slut shaming, growing up catholic, love, mental illness, feminism, body positivity … I don’t really know where to start. . . .
I get really moody and unstable when I get in relationships so why can’t I just date and not force myself to feel like I HAVE TO FIND [MR … maybe MS] RIGHT RIGHT NOW!?! . . .
Anyways, we will see where this goes. I don’t think he is “the one” . . .
The thing that makes me the saddest is it took a stranger (well not a complete stranger) and NOT A boyfriend to help me see how people can have [actually] good, [actually] consensual sex. I guess that speaks volumes about the a–holes I have been dating.

So (a) she’s a bisexual feminist, (b) she’s a SlutWalk organizer and (c) she’s been dating a–holes and having bad sex.

Did I mention she’s crazy? Because I covered the 2013 D.C. SlutWalk, and the vibe of serious mental illness was so heavy I think half of them had gotten day passes from St. Elizabeth’s so they could participate. It takes a special kind of crazy to march topless through the streets of Washington, D.C., waving signs and chanting slogans about rape. The solution to that kind of problem isn’t equal rights, it’s Thorazine.

It was a lesbian friend who first told me about the prevalence of borderline personality disorder in the lesbian community. This bit of trivia I filed away in my mind, half-forgotten, until I encountered Women’s Studies professor Lisa Johnson, who organized a pro-lesbian event at her university. In 2010, Professor Johnson published a book, Girl in Need of a Tourniquet: Memoir of a Borderline Personality, describing herself as a “psycho girlfriend” with a history of dysfunctional relationships with both men and women.

Yes, this makes perfect sense to university administrators: Give the “psycho girlfriend” a Ph.D. and put her in charge of your Women’s Studies program so she can host the performance of an event for students called, “How to Be a Lesbian in 10 Days or Less.”

This is not to suggest that all lesbians are crazy. Certainly, few of them are crazy enough to be professors of Women’s Studies, a field pioneered by genuine lunatics like Mary Daly and Joyce Trebilcot. Back in the day, my freelance research in the effects of hallucinogenic drugs led to some serious craziness, but if I’d started babbling about the gender binary and the heterosexual matrix, or ranting that “destruction of the incest taboo is essential to the development of cooperative human community based on the free-flow of natural androgynous eroticism,” the way Andrea Dworkin did, I’d probably be doing the “Haldol Shuffle” in a psychiatric unit somewhere. (As opposed to being a professional blogger, a career that requires complete sanity.) You need a Ph.D. and faculty tenure before you can get paid to spew the kind of deranged gibberish taught in Women’s Studies classrooms, so the amateur feminist nutjobs on Tumblr are frequently disappointed that few people appreciate their volunteer craziness. Kayla Spagnoli recently got a clue:

“Thinking about shifting my activism from feminism to mental illness. It’s been a long time coming. Jason has always wondered why I gave so much to a movement that has always lashed back. It makes sense.”

Follow that clue, Kayla. And stay away psilocybin.

After I engaged Ms. Spagnoli on Twitter, feminists rallied to her defense. This replicates a pattern I observed in 2013:

What you discover is that radicals have two discourses: The exoteric discourse, used when speaking to outsiders, is about “choice,” “equality,” “health,” etc. The esoteric discourse, used among fellow radicals, is an entirely different vocabulary: “Smash patriarchy,” destroy “heteronormativity and gender roles” and “systems of domination.”
And when you pull back the exoteric mask to reveal the esoteric truth of radicalism . . . well, that’s intimidation, you haters!

Feminist ideology is not merely anti-male and anti-heterosexual. The feminist movement is anti-fact and anti-truth.

We are not deceived, because we are not insane.

Not a good weekend for Yr. Humble Editor, who spent most of it in bed and probably should have done the same on Friday. It was probably just a cold, but it kept me from accomplishing anything on the blogging front.

This week’s leadoff pic is from the screwball anime comedy Amazing Nurse Nanako, a wacky combination of I Love Lucy and The X-Files featuring the ridiculously-endowed and none-too-bright Nanako. Amusing comedy even without the fanservice.

Is she a maid? A nurse? Who cares?

As usual, many of the following links are to pictures normally considered NSFW. Exercise discretion in the clicking.

Average Bubba leads off this week with a link to feminist music and Rule Five Friday, followed by Randy’s Roundtable with Kenda Perez, titbits from Goodstuff, and Ninety Miles From Tyranny with Morning Mistress, Hot Pick of the Late Night, and Girls with Guns. Animal Magnetism returns with Rule Five Friday and the Saturday Gingermageddon, Loose Endz has The Man Who Drew Candy-O, and First Street Journal takes us to Jordan.

EBL’s thundering herd this week includes Caitlin Stasey, Kayla Jean Mueller, Russell Wilson’s Super Bowl Problem, Keira Knightley, and Fifty Shades of Dakota Johnson.

A View from the Beach brings us An Oldie but Goody – Christie Brinkley, “Cotton Eyed Joe”, North Sea Jazz, Someone is Unhappy with the Result, How About a Little Vatican Rule 5?, Hail to Thee our Alma Mater, Superbowl XLIX Live Blog, and Superbowl Sunday Warmup.

The Tragedy of Lesbian Divorce

Posted on | February 8, 2015 | 116 Comments

Whatever happened to old-fashioned lesbian family values?

Rosie O’Donnell and her wife, Michelle Rounds, have split, and O’Donnell will leave “The View” next week to concentrate on her family’s well-being, Page Six can exclusively reveal.
Sources close to O’Donnell told us that she and Rounds, her wife of three years, have been living apart for months, and that O’Donnell feels she must leave the ABC daytime show to focus on her five kids.
Rosie’s rep, Cindi Berger, confirmed the marital split, as well O’Donnell’s departure from “The View,” in a statement Friday night: “I can confirm that Rosie and her wife Michelle split in November. Rosie has teens and an infant at home that need her attention. This has been a very stressful situation. She is putting her personal health and family first. ABC has been wonderfully understanding and supportive of her personal decision to leave ‘The View.’ Next week will be her last.”
O’Donnell, 52, married her second wife Rounds in private in June 2012. In 2013, they adopted a baby girl, Dakota. She has four other older kids.

Notice that this is O’Donnell’s second lesbian wife. Her first marriage to longtime girlfriend Kelli Carpenter ended in 2007. Carpenter now has her own second wife, and the four O’Donnell-Carpenter children seem closer to Kelli than to Rosie. Nobody in the world of media is allowed to say a word about the unnatural weirdness of all this — two boys and three girls without fathers, one of them (Kelli’s youngest) conceived by artificial insemination — because equality!

This is the Feminist Dream Life™ of women free from the heteronormative oppression of male supremacy, and we are all required to believe that it’s a utopia of undimmed bliss. Nor are we permitted to point out that some women who once lived as lesbians are now happily married to men, because this contradicts everything we are supposed to “know,” about both (a) the alleged permanence of homosexual identity and (b) traditional marriage as patriarchal slavery for women.

Meanwhile, we learn that angry lesbians are not ratings gold:

The collapse of Rosie O’Donnell’s two-year marriage had nothing to do with her quitting the troubled daytime chat show, The View, show insiders have disclosed.
In fact, her sudden departure was prompted by rows with producers and other staff, who are said to be delighted she is leaving.
O’Donnell is being seen as the key reason for the show’s collapsing ratings, which had led to serious concerns over falling advertising revenue. . . .
ABC insiders now acknowledge it was a disastrous error to bring O’Donnell back to the show.
They say that far from her suggestion that her marriage had become troubled recently, it was already on the rocks when she was signed for The View.

Anyone who has observed Rosie O’Donnell over the years recognizes that she is the source of her own problems. Her “humor” (such as it is) emerges from a bitter and resentful heart. She hates happy people, envying them for experiencing a joy that she can never feel, and she refuses to accept that she is responsible for her own unhappiness.

In celebrating such unhappy people as role models for youth, the media elite have helped promote a Culture of Despair.

“Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools . . .”

Marcusean Intolerance

Posted on | February 7, 2015 | 22 Comments

Students of radicalism know that “political correctness” is not a joke, but is a totalitarian tactic of Cultural Marxism, which originated with the theoretician Georg Lukacs, but is especially associated with intellectuals of the Frankfurt School including Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, Erich Fromm, and Herbert Marcuse.

Marcuse has sometimes been called the “Father of the New Left,” his books Eros and Civilization (1955) and One-Dimensional Man (1964) credited with inspiring the so-called “counterculture” of radical youth in the 1960s. However, it may be that Marcuse’s most lasting contribution to progressive politics was his 1965 essay “Repressive Tolerance,” in which he sneered at “abstract tolerance and spurious objectivity” and coined the phrase “totalitarian democracy” to describe Western society. Marcuse claimed that “the concentration of economic and political power . . . in a society which uses technology as an instrument of domination” means that “effective dissent is blocked.” He claimed that it was possible to determine “the most rational ways of using [economic] resources and distributing the social product,” that “it is also possible to identify policies, opinions, movements” to accomplish this goal. However, he insisted, it would be necessary to suppress opposition to these “rational” socialist policies:

Liberating tolerance, then, would mean intolerance against movements from the Right and toleration of movements from the Left.

This was plainly a call to suppress dissent. Marcuse insisted that “progress” — i.e., a socialist policy to redistribute “resources”– required silencing opponents of such policies. Marcuse was arguing for tyranny in the name of liberation.

Marcuse’s influence still echoes half a century later, even influencing awards in the field of science fiction and fantasy:

Even if social-justice radicals were only a threat to right-wingers, that would still be a problem in need of a solution. The breadth of perspectives accommodated by sci-fi has historically been one of its greatest strengths, allowing it to reach ever-wider audiences throughout the decades. The great dystopian writers of the early-to-mid twentieth-century included socialists like George Orwell, liberals like Aldous Huxley, and of course the objectivist libertarian Ayn Rand. . . .
Wherever they emerge, social-justice warriors claim to be champions of diversity. But they always reveal themselves to be relentlessly hostile to it: they applaud people of different genders, races, and cultures just so long as those people all think the same way.

Facts Are the New Hate

Posted on | February 7, 2015 | 65 Comments

In Canada, a group called “Emerging Leaders” proclaims its mission to create “a more vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic . . . community for the future” in London, Ontario. If you suspect “vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic” are just a roundabout way of saying flamboyantly gay, you’ve probably heard about the survey these Emerging Leaders conducted “to examine attitudes in London’s queer community and understand its demographics.” Their theory is that “a key to shifting from London’s declining manufacturing economy into a diverse, innovative, knowledge sector economy” is to make their town as queer-friendly as the Castro district of San Francisco during the annual Gay Pride Parade.

Alas, the Emerging Leaders survey of the local “LGBTQ community” found that “only 16.1% of respondents fully agree that they feel safe and able to express their sexuality while walking in public in London.” This allegedly hostile climate of homophobia, said the Emerging Leaders, is “troubling,” and they urged “improving tolerance of London’s queer community . . . through increasing the opportunities for LGBTQ community members to meet in public spaces.”

Whether or not turning Ontario into the Queer Capital of Canada actually would be good for the economy, you can understand why some skeptics might object to this idea, especially as it involved depicting the area’s non-queer residents as dangerously violent bigots. In response to the Emerging Leaders survey, local conservative radio talk show host Andrew Lawton posted this information to his Facebook page:

Number of sexual-orientation motivated
hate crimes in Canada per year: 185
Number of HIV/AIDS infections from
men having sex with men in Canada per year: 1450
Who is the real enemy?

Apparently, these are Facts You’re Not Allowed to Mention in Canada, and Lawton was forced to issue an online apology.

Alas, the local Diversity Fascists were not sufficiently appeased, and station manager Nathan Smith suspended Lawton’s program:

Perhaps, in the politest, most civil way possible, it would be a good idea to remind AM980’s Nathan Smith that until Andrew is reinstated, listeners will stop buying products and services advertised on the station. It might also be a good idea to remind some of the station’s advertisers of that.
