CPAC 2023: Celebrity Sightings

Posted on | March 3, 2023 | Comments Off on CPAC 2023: Celebrity Sightings

Sarah Palin says, “Hi!”

NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland
Wandering through the exhibition space here at CPAC, we turned a corner and saw people standing in line. “What is this about?” my friend asked. “Book signing,” I guessed, without any idea what author might be up at the head of this queue. But then I looked and saw it was … her.

From the moment she was announced as John McCain’s 2008 running mate, Palin has been adored by grassroots conservatives. The first time I covered her, at a rally in Lebanon, Ohio (“Sweetheart of the Heartland,” Sept. 10, 2008), it was obvious that she had ignited a populist fuse which, it could be argued, ultimately elected Donald Trump in 2016.

So, while I am generally immune to starstruck celebrity fanboy behavior — a professional journalist shouldn’t act that way — I decided I needed to get in that line with the rest of the fanboyNMs. When I finally got to the front of the line, there was only time for a brief conversation, as other people were waiting their turn. But I did mention the time in 2010 I visited Wasilla and hung out with her family, including little Trig, and also that my old friend Lynn Vincent was her co-author on Going Rogue. Palin said, “Tell Lynn I said, hi!” And then I had to make way.

Roaming the corridors later Thursday, I bumped into my fellow American Spectator contributor Jeffrey Lord. Don’t know why I look so glum in the picture. Probably needed to visit . . .

The lobby bar — this is where the real action is at CPAC. Never mind all those politicians and pundits blabbing on the main stage, I must be among the genuine grassroots. Or, at least, my old buddies.

Stacey Lennox of PJMedia was telling me very interesting off-the-record stories about people who shall not be named. One thing about being a journalist is, you hear so many juicy stories that you can’t ever publish because you’re sworn to secrecy by your sources. I never burn a source, and my sources never burn me, because they know there’d be hell to pay.

Talk-radio star Larry O’Connor pretending he doesn’t know that crazy old guy, but me and Larry go way back to Tea Party days.

Superstar lawyer Ron Coleman has represented many conservatives in court. As for the question of whose beers those are, my attorney advises me I have the right to remain silent. The one thing I’m certain of is, I didn’t pay for those beers. Professional journalists always dodge the tab.

Townhall columnist Kurt Schlichter is a former Army officer and practicing attorney, but he’s never claimed to be a professional journalist, which probably explains why he got stuck with the tab.

Between uploading these pictures and doing some other work this morning, time has flown, but I have lots more photos piled up that I’ll be posting later. Meanwhile, I need to get showered and dressed for another day of covering CPAC with professional journalism. IYKWIMAITYD.

CPAC: Founding Fathers

Posted on | March 2, 2023 | 1 Comment

NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland
My old friend George Washington — James Manship, who has been portraying the Father of Our Country for more than 20 years — was among the familiar faces I encountered on the first full day of CPAC, but of course not the only old buddy who crossed my meandering path. Just moments ago, I was sitting in the lobby bar of the Gaylord hotel with Kurt Schlichter, Larry O’Conner and Ron Coleman, and have pictures to prove it, but don’t have time right now to post the pictures. So you’ll just have to take my word for it, for now, because it’s time for me to go get dinner with another buddy, and — OMG! — do I have stories to tell. But as I say, dinner awaits. Stacey Lennox of PJM just called me, so we’re on our way to a dining establishment that also serves excellent beverages, and my main goal is to bolt out of there shortly before the check arrives.

Y’all have fun in the comments. Will post more later.

Back to CPAC With the Big Yellow Button

Posted on | March 1, 2023 | 1 Comment

For something like 15 years, I never missed the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), covering it first for The Washington Times, then for The American Spectator. And by “covering it,” of course I mean hanging out with all my friends and filing late-night screeds of semi-incoherent gibberish. The liberal media always feasts on CPAC as an occasion to pursue their endless search for right-wing scandals and controversies, while most of the conservatives in attendance have a great time at the event that I long ago dubbed “Mardi Gras for the Right.”

With the D.C. area in the grip of a draconian COVID-19 lockdown, CPAC decided in 2021 to move the conference to Orlando, and did it again in 2022, so that I’ve missed the event the past two years. But as soon as I finish this post, I’ll be packing up my laptop and heading off to National Harbor for CPAC 2023, and covering it in my usual gonzo manner. You wouldn’t believe what I’m paying for a hotel room, which is the main reason I’ve brought back the Big Yellow Button. Even though the PayPal contribution button is always on the page, sometimes I enlarge it for the benefit of near-sighted readers who may not have noticed it before.

Our usual request for tip-jar hits is $17.76. A 150-mile road trip to D.C. is quite expensive under Bidenflation, so if you want to chip in $4 for a gallon of gas, that would be appreciated. If you’re in the patriotic spirit, you might want to pay tribute to such great Americans as Andrew Jackson or even Benjamin Franklin, IYKWIMAITYD.

Helping defray travel expenses for my return to CPAC may be sufficient cause for most readers to kick in a few bucks for the trip, but as usual the most urgent thing is, keeping my wife happy.

Mrs. McCain likes it when the blog actually produces revenue, and keeping her happy is Job One, so once again I ask readers to recall the Five Most Important Words in the English Language:

HIT THE FREAKING TIP JAR!

Good-Bye, Mayor Frogface! Lightfoot Places Third in Chicago Reelection Bid

Posted on | March 1, 2023 | 1 Comment

The pioneering Amphibian-American got less than 20% of the vote in her effort to win another four years in office to wreck Chicago:

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot lost her bid for re-election Tuesday, ending her historic run as the city’s first Black woman and first openly gay person to serve in the position.
Lightfoot, a Democrat, failed to get enough votes in the nine-person race to move on to an April 4 runoff election, according to projections by The Associated Press.
Paul Vallas, a former CEO of Chicago schools, will face Brandon Johnson, a Cook County commissioner endorsed by the Chicago Teachers Union.
Ideologically, the choice between Vallas and Johnson is stark. Vallas ran as a moderate law-and-order candidate, while Johnson ran on an unabashedly progressive agenda.
But Chicagoans sent a message that they wanted change, rejecting both an incumbent mayor and a sitting congressman. Lightfoot is the first incumbent elected Chicago mayor to lose re-election since 1983, when Jane Byrne, the city’s first female mayor, lost her primary.
Lightfoot conceded defeat Tuesday night at her party in downtown Chicago, saying, “Obviously we didn’t win the election today, but I stand here with my head held high.”

Frogs everywhere — to say nothing of toads, newts and salamanders — are still proud of Mayor Frogface, who inflicted the kind of vengeance on humans that amphibians have long craved, turning Chicago into a racially-divided hive of Fear and Loathing where 737 people were murdered last year and more than 3,600 were wounded by gunfire.

You may be surprised — but probably not very surprised — to discover what factors Lori Lightfoot blames for her historic defeat:

Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot blamed racism and her gender for her landslide defeat in her re-election bid, as Chicagoans weary of the rising crime on her watch celebrated her fall from “political rock star to rock bottom.”
“I’m a black woman in America. Of course,” she replied when asked by a reporter if she had been treated unfairly.
But she called being Chicago’s mayor “the honor of a lifetime.”
“Regardless of tonight’s outcome, we fought the right fights and we put this city on a better path,” Lightfoot said, as she urged her fellow mayors around the US not to fear being bold.
Amid heavy criticism for the crime wave, homelessness and other troubles plaguing the city, the mayor had also injected race into the run-up to the election.
“I am a black woman — let’s not forget,” Lightfoot, 60, told the New Yorker in a piece that ran Saturday. “Certain folks, frankly, don’t support us in leadership roles.”

Prior to being elected mayor in 2019, Lightfoot had never previously held elective office, but instead had been appointed to various government jobs — assistant U.S. attorney, president of the Chicago Police Board, etc. — by Democrats eager to fulfill their “diversity” quotas. And her upward ascent continued until finally, she found herself in a position where real-world consequences mattered. At which point, she became a victim of oppression, because all those RAAAAACISTS in Chicago voted against giving her another four years of letting their city go to ruin.

Eighty-three percent of Chicago voters are racists, apparently.
