It’s important to remember where this all began, eh?

That post from last September was the first time the name “Bill Schmalfeldt” appeared on this blog, and it had nothing to do with me or Lee Stranahan or John Hoge or Ali Akbar. No, it was because Bill Schmalfeldt was threatening to sue Aaron Walker, and Patterico was encouraging contributions to Aaron’s legal defense fund.

By that point Schmalfeldt had already been cyberstalking Walker for three months, because of Walker’s conflict with Brett Kimberlin.

For reasons that I’ve never entirely understood, Schmalfeldt subsequently shifted his focus, targeting Stranahan with absolutely vile attacks, until Stranahan pursued harassment charges. And then there were the bizarre ruminations described by Ken White of Popehat:

Last year, between Christmas and New Years, Bill Schmalfeldt posted a fantasy about mob violence and murder, enthusiastically imagining the death of Patrick Frey and me.

Go read the whole thing and ask yourself: How can someone like Bill Schmalfeldt claim to be a victim of harassment?

It’s important for anyone attacked by Bill Schmalfeldt to remember that the attack is never actually about you or whatever reason Bill offers for why he is angry at you. It’s always about Bill. Consider his response to a Facebook group of Wisconsin activists:

“Any time I’ve been in a bar fight, I’m generally the guy standing. I can’t do it physically any more, but if you dipshits really want to go to court with me, BRING IT. And send me pictures of your homes, because they will be mine. And your wives. They’ll be mine, too. Everything you own. Mine. Anything else you want to talk about, dickface?”

You stay classy, Bill Schmalfeldt!

That particular episode began with Schmalfeldt’s beef against a group of conservatives who opposed the union-backed recall effort against Gov. Scott Walker and other Republicans. But it turned into a ridiculous drama because Schmalfeldt’s deranged habits: “Billy is well known for harassment of others on social networking.”

See? This problem was “well-known” before I’d ever heard of Bill Schmalfeldt. Which brings us to today’s eruption of Schmalfeldtian madness.  There is an anonymous Tumblr blog that chronicles Schmalfeldt’s craziness. Schimalfeldt filed a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) complaint. This was the counter-notice:

My name is Ali A. Akbar. I’m the President of the National Bloggers Club. Part of my duty as President is to protect bloggers, including anonymous ones.
It was brought to my attention that Mr. Schmalfeldt has submitted a false DMCA notice against the blog billschmalfeldt.tumblr.com.
He’s a repeat offender at this. At least four of our members have been targeted by Mr. Schmalfeldt in the past. 100% of his DMCA takedown notices have resulted in zero court action. He’s simply trying to suppress free speech and keep citizen-journalists from writing about him.
In fact, DreamHost recently dropped him for copyright infringement. WordPress has dropped several images he’s uploaded too. This character has been banned from Twitter, Facebook, DailyKos.com, Examiner.com over a dozen times.
One blogger has a restraining order against Mr. Schmalfeldt as he is an adjudicated harasser according to the Maryland courts. His harassment of bloggers is that bad.

His attempt to terrorize my members isn’t working. . . .
Please make sure your legal department is aware of Mr. Schmalfeldt’s continued [misbehavior]. If they need anymore information about him — they need to go no further than typing his name into a Yahoo! search or even “Bill Schmalfeldt DMCA.”

That’s just it, see? Type the name “Bill Schmalfeldt” into any search engine, and you immediately realize he’s nuts.

There’s only one person on the planet who doesn’t realize this.

His name? Bill Schmalfeldt.

UPDATED: New Information Emerges on Navy Yard Shooting Suspect Aaron Alexis

About eight hours have passed since shooting began at the Washington Navy Yard, and information is still sketchy. Early reports that as many as three shooters were involved appear not to be true. Investigators are still seeking a possible second suspect, but it now appears highly likely that today’s carnage — which killed at least 12 victims and may have wounded about a dozen others — was committed by one man, Aaron Alexis, 34, of Fort Worth, Texas. He was shot and killed, and was identified by his fingerprints, the New York Times reports.

Motive for this massacre is unclear, and the FBI is leading the investigation now under way. My early caution about the need to be patient was unheeded by a certain notorious fool:

Alex Jones is an irresponsible menace — that is a confirmed fact.

UPDATE: The FBI is seeking information about the dead shooting suspect, Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth Texas:

Alexis was a Navy veteran who left the service in 2011.

UPDATE II: Networks raced to be first with the wrong name:

CBS News and NBC News retracted reports about the identification of the Washington Navy Yard shooter on Monday, just minutes after each network reported that the suspect in question was a Navy chief petty officer named Rollie Chance.
CBS’s John Miller reported that Chance was a suspect before 1 p.m. on Monday. NBC News later reported the same information and continued to do so past 1 p.m., even after Miller reported that the initial reports about Chance were wrong.
Finally, at 1:05 p.m., NBC political director Chuck Todd tweeted: “NBC News: we are now NOT reporting name of shooter; retracting that report. deleting those tweets.”

So if you’re watching NBC or CBS, you’re trusting unreliable sources. Whereas I’m always 100% right, except when I disagree with my wife.

UPDATE III: Deanna Boyd of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports:

Nutpisit Suthamtewakul, owner of Happy Bowl Thai in White Settlement, said Alexis was “my best friend.”
“He lived with me three years,” Suthamtewakul said Monday afternoon. “I don’t think he’d do this. He has a gun, but I don’t think he’s that stupid. He didn’t seem aggressive to me.”
Upon learning of his death, Suthamtewakul said, “ ‘Wait, he’s dead? I call him, but he doesn’t answer phone.”
Alexis had been in the Navy from 2007 to 2011 and was most recently stationed at Naval Air Station Fort Worth, according to Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Blansett, a Navy spokeswoman in McLean, Va. . . .
Alexis also worked at times as a waiter and deliveryman at Happy Bowl, customers said.
Alexis had recently visited Thailand and had been to Japan with a computer defense contractor, where he worked in information technology, said Sandy Guerra-Cline, a customer at Happy Bowl and copy editor at the Star-Telegram. . . .
Alexis, whose most recent address was 7940 White Settlement Road in Fort Worth, had not lived there for six to eight months, said his landlord, Somsak Srisan.
“Oh boy, I can’t believe this,” Srisan said. “He was always very polite to me.” . . .
A friend said Alexis loved Buddhism.
“He loved to go to temple, go to meditate in Thai and English,” the friend said. “He could do both of them.”
Alexis had previously lived in Flushing, N.Y., from 2000 to 2002. It is unclear where he lived from 2002 until he moved to Fort Worth.

Alexis was evicted from an apartment complex in Fort Worth after an incident where he fired a gun through the ceiling of his apartment.

Some of the commenters have pointed out that Alexis is black and have speculated about the possibility that race played a factor in the Navy Yard Shooting. There is no evidence of this, nor of any other motive — so far. Most likely, we could speculate that this is a “disgruntled former employee” situation. That is just speculation, however, and there is certainly no reason at this point to suggest that racial hostility or any political ideology influenced the shooter.

#NavyYardShooting Patience, Please: Don’t Let Media Reports Confuse You

We’ve seen this pattern over and over, from 9/11 to the Boston Marathon bombings: New breaks, cable TV and online sources fill up with “confirmed” reports and various thinly-sourced rumors that later prove to be false or irrelevant. The urgency of media trying to be first to report new tidbits of information in real time creates a blizzard of confusing and contradictory “facts” which may not be facts at all.

What is important as a news consumer in such a situation is to be patient, to realize that what’s happening at the scene is going to happen independent of what is said on cable TV or on the Internet. We cannot influence events, and yet the BREAKING NEWS banners on cable TV make us feel a sense of involvement, so that you may get emotionally distraught simply because you don’t know what is actually happening.

Patience. By this time tomorrow, the identity of the shooter or shooters, the motive, and the names of the victims will all be known.

Weird things happen when you make a hobby of writing about crazy people. Matt Ross at Conservative Hideout is now being harassed by supporters of accused Florida sex offender Kaitlyn Hunt because Matt obtained information of interest to law enforcement.

This is how it is, see. Wackos never expect to be held accountable. They feel entitled to cause trouble for everyone else, but then lash out insanely at anyone who causes them trouble. The “Free Kate” movement has demonized the parents who reported Kaitlyn’s crimes, they’ve vilified the sheriff’s office and the prosecutor, they’re actively seeking to undermine Florida’s age-of-consent laws, but when anyone criticizes them — well, how dare you? They’re always the victims.

Speaking of which, Bill Schmalfeldt started Tweeting out threats, and got his Twitter account suspended (again). He’s always the victim, see?

Where’s Joe McCarthy when we really need him?

Protests against General David Petraeus Monday by CUNY students were organized by an ad hoc committee that includes several Communist groups.
A leaflet for the protests, which refers to Petraeus as a “war criminal” and “mass murderer,” says that the events were organized by the Ad Hoc Committee Against the Militarization of CUNY and were endorsed by the Internationalist Group, Workers Power-US, and IGNITE.
These groups are explicitly Communist in nature. Workers Power states that it is a “revolutionary, communist organization . . . in the tradition of Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Trotsky.” The Internationalist Group uses the hammer and sickle alongside its articles. IGNITE is a self-described “communist youth league.” . . .
Erick Moreno, a senior at Queens College and a member of Students Without Borders, a group that endorsed the protest, confirmed that the leaflet came from the committee, which he said serves as a “united front of student, faculty, and community organizations that are taking on the task of promoting this campaign to oust General Petraeus from CUNY as well as ROTC and military contractors from the CUNY system.” . . .

(Via College Insurrection.) A cruelly ironic question: How is it that the United States “won” the Cold War, yet anti-American Marxism is now the default doctrine of our nation’s colleges and universities?
