‘Huddled Masses’ Update: Why Is This ‘Crisis’ Costing New York Billions?

Posted on | August 14, 2023 | 1 Comment

Our moral and intellectual superiors:

New York City’s surging migrant population is set to double by June 2024 — meaning the city will be on the hook for 100,000 homeless immigrants — as costs are estimated to rise to a mind-boggling high of $12 billion over the next three years.
“We are past our breaking point,” Mayor Adams declared in a dire address at City Hall Wednesday, pleading with the feds and everyday New Yorkers to help mitigate the crisis.
The city currently spends a nightly average of $383 per 25,600 asylum-seeker households, including families with kids, adult couples and singles — for housing, food and other services, according to officials.
“With more than 57,300 individuals currently in our care on an average night, it amounts to $9.8 million a day. Almost $300 million a month and nearly $3.6 billion a year,” the mayor said.
“This is the floor, not the ceiling,” he warned, revealing the city’s current expenses could rise even further.

(Hat-tip: Sarah Hoyt at Instapundit.)

Apparently, no one else has bothered doing the arithmetic here. Saturday night on The Other Podcast, this topic was raised by John Hoge who had a post about a similar “crisis” in Massachusetts. The reason Democrat-controlled “blue” states are now caterwauling about their “crisis” is that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, whose state has been coping for years with the flood of illegal immigrants caused by the failure of the federal government to secure the border, decided to start sending busloads of these asylum seekers to the places where liberals vote for “sanctuary laws” and elect liberal Democrats who embrace such policies.

Yes, but what about the arithmetic? Adams speaks of “25,600 asylum-seeker households” costing the city $383 per day or, by another calculus, “57,300 individuals” who cost the city $9.8 million a day — which simple division tells me amounts to $171.03 per “individual.” Multiply that by 365 days of the year, and this means that New York City is spending $62,425.83 per year on each member of its “surging migrant population.”

Every man, woman and child of these “huddled masses” is consuming, at taxpayer expense, a sum nearly $10,000 a year greater than the median household income in Alabama. Of course, the migrants themselves get nary a nickel of that spending, which is funneled through a vast bureaucracy and into the coffers of non-profit social-service charities, so that what most of this money actually goes to is keeping sociology majors employed. Also, a lot of the money is paid to rent hotel rooms for the “57,300 individuals,” so that spending $9.8 million a day functions as a subsidy to hotel owners, and also guaranteeing employment for the hotel maids whose job it is to clean up after the “huddled masses.”

While it is not my habit to offer advice to liberal Democrats, perhaps Mayor Adams will heed this suggestion: New York City can help these migrants, and ultimately end the city’s refugee “crisis,” by the simple expedient of (a) giving money directly to the migrants, on condition that (b) they leave New York. Basically, offer them a free one-way plane ticket and guarantee them $3,000 a month for the first six months in their new place of residence, on condition that they never return to New York.

For a lump-sum expenditure of less than $20,000, you thereby save the taxpayers of New York $40,000 a year going forward. Oh, and I should add, that’s $3,000 a month for each member of the migrant household, including children, so that a family of four would get $12,000 a month for six months after their relocation from New York. And you know something, Mayor Adams? There are lots of places in this country — certainly Alabama is among them — where any family with a monthly income of $12,000 would be considered wealthy. Hell, these migrants could be living it up like the Kardashians, if only you’d do it my way.

Perhaps readers now understand why it’s not my habit to offer advice to liberal Democrats — my ideas are just too pure genius for them.

FMJRA 2.0: Time For New Water Coolers

Posted on | August 12, 2023 | Comments Off on FMJRA 2.0: Time For New Water Coolers

— compiled by Wombat-socho

This was a bad week for the Senators. It started well enough, as we took two out of three from the Angels in Anaheim, but then we went to Shea and got swept by the Day Traders, and came home to drop two out of three to the Hated Yankees. Our manager was Not Pleased, and barricaded himself in his office with a case each of Narragansett Beer and Moxie, after ritually smashing the water coolers to propitiate the baseball gods. We’ll host the Twins on Tuesday, and hopefully we’ll do better than we did last time. Still, we’re just a game behind the A’s and 2.5 up on the Twins, and the season is far from over.

When the ‘Investigation’ Is a Cover-Up

Posted on | August 12, 2023 | 1 Comment

First, the news:

In a dramatic shift, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Friday that Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss was being upgraded to a special counsel to investigate the Biden family finances.
The decision means the probe into Hunter Biden’s taxes and his father’s potential dealings with his foreign clients will carry into the 2024 election at the same time the president’s chief rival Donald Trump faces two federal indictments brought by the same department. The tax case is likely to be moved to Washington and Los Angeles, officials said.
Republicans, however, gave the announcement a cold reaction, saying Weiss was the wrong person for the job after offering Hunter Biden a prison-sparing plea deal that fell apart.
“This move by AG Garland is part of the Justice Department’s efforts to attempt a Biden family coverup in light of [House Oversight Committee’s] mounting evidence of President Biden’s role in his family’s schemes selling ‘the brand’ for millions of dollars to foreign nationals,” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer wrote.
Added House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan: “David Weiss can’t be trusted, and this is just a new way to whitewash the Biden family’s corruption. Weiss has already signed off on a sweetheart plea deal that was so awful and unfair that a federal judge rejected it.”
Garland said the appointment of Weiss to an independent prosecutor was in the “public interest,” required by department rules and requested earlier in the week by Weiss.

Ace of Spades points out that part of what’s going on here is that conferring Special Counsel status on Weiss is a way to block House investigators looking into the “sweetheart deal” plea bargain for Hunter Biden that Weiss himself orchestrated (likely under orders from, but certainly with the approval of, Attorney General Merrick Garland). More importantly, however, it’s a way for Garland to put a lid on the whole Biden family corruption saga until after next year’s election.

What Democrats are doing here, of course, is a variation of the Mueller “investigation,” altered to suit their new purposes. Remember what happened in 2017: Trump discovered after becoming president that the FBI had been doing surveillance on his campaign on the false pretext of “Russian collusion” (which pretext, of course, was manufactured by the Clinton campaign using the phony Steele dossier). So, Trump fires FBI Director James Comey and, when this provokes an outcry from Democrats, Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions recuses himself from the matter, and appoints former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate. OK, but . . . investigate what?

The real scandal in this was the “Russian collusion” hoax perpetrated against Trump by the Clinton campaign, in which the FBI played a crucial role (“Operation Crossfire Hurricane”), which was why Trump fired Comey. Instead of investigating that, however, Mueller’s investigation instead focused on trying to confirm the existence of “Russian collusion” — which proved impossible because, of course, there was no “collusion” — and also trying to prove that Trump’s firing of Comey somehow constituted “obstruction of justice.” But Trump was not the perpetrator of wrongdoing, he was the victim of wrongdoing, and the purpose of Mueller’s investigation was to conceal this truth.

In other words, the “investigation” was really a cover-up, and months passed while talking heads on MSNBC and CNN kept up their wild-eyed speculation about how “the walls are closing in” on Trump — speculation fed by leaks from Mueller’s team — keeping alive the myth of “Russian collusion” until after the 2018 midterm elections.

Mission accomplished.

Then, in March 2019, with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer now in control of Congress, Mueller releases his report, which disappointed all the cable-news talking heads by failing to confirm “Russian collusion.” The walls had signally failed to “close in,” but the Mueller had achieved his political purpose, namely to promote suspicion of Trump as a Kremlin dupe while concealing the Democratic Party dirty campaign trick behind that suspicion (and the FBI’s own role in that campaign trick).

Fast-forward to the present, and now we have a Special Counsel appointed in the Hunter Biden case who has a similar mission, namely to obstruct the House Oversight Committee’s investigation and deflect attention from the very real scandal by which the Biden family collected $20 million from Hunter’s foreign “clients.” Biden and his administration now have an excuse not to comment on anything related to Hunter because it’s “under investigation” and, the reader may be assured, there will be no leaks from Weiss’s office to the media to give fuel to speculation about the “walls closing in” on Joe Biden.

Anyone with two eyes and a brain can see what’s happening, but the media won’t tell the truth. And they wonder why we don’t trust them.

Anarcho-Tyranny in Seattle and L.A.

Posted on | August 11, 2023 | Comments Off on Anarcho-Tyranny in Seattle and L.A.

Stephen Green at Instapundit calls attention to a veteran Seattle police officer’s resignation letter:

“Their absurd policies have turned Seattle into a playground for anarchists and criminals, and they seem utterly unconcerned with the devastating consequences of their actions,” wrote Jessica Taylor, who joined the force in 1998 and resigned last week. “If you haven’t noticed, the criminals are running this city.”
Taylor refused to fill out a standard exit form and instead submitted the 15-page letter to chief of police Adrian Diaz, who she says “has brought this department and this city to its knees,” adding that the department “has transformed into a cesspool of corruption.”
Diaz and other city leaders prioritize “playing politics and pandering to radical ideologies rather than genuinely serving the city’s and its residents best interests,” Taylor said.
Taylor called Diaz a “vindictive, power-hungry individual,” telling him, “I wouldn’t trust you as far as I could throw you.”
The letter comes amid rising crime in the city, Newsweek reported:

A 2021 year-end crime report from the SPD shows that violent crime in the city rose by 20 percent, one of the highest levels in over a decade. At the same time, robberies rose by 18 percent and aggravated assaults by 24 percent. In 2022, the overall crime rate in the city grew by 4 percent compared to the previous year, with a 24 percent rise in homicide, a 4 percent rise in rape, and a 5 percent rise in aggravated assault, according to the SPD.

Nothing is more fundamental to the purpose of government than protecting the lives and property of citizens, and yet Seattle and other Democrat-controlled cities seem incapable or unwilling to perform this essential duty. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles:

Former L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva sounded the alarm Wednesday on the threat posted by dwindling law enforcement numbers, adding that it’s “no mystery” why the city is struggling to attract people to the job.
“You have a horrendous political climate where every politician was jumping over themselves in the summer of 2020 to denounce law enforcement, create a very hostile work environment [and] no one wants a job anymore,” he told “America’s Newsroom.” “Then you have weak leadership in law enforcement that double down on that because they’re the first to throw their own employees under the bus. Then they wonder why they can attract people to the job.”
The LAPD has shed over 1,000 sworn officers since 2019, according to department data. Meanwhile, crime is on the rise and arrests are declining. . . .
“The political establishment in L.A. decided, from 2020 on, ‘Let’s destroy law enforcement. Let’s bash them and shrink them because of the defunding efforts,'” Villanueva said.

Even if the district attorney wanted to send criminals to prison (which he doesn’t, because RAAAAACISM), L.A. now has such a shortage of officers that it’s becoming more difficult to apprehend criminals. The result is what the late Sam Francis described as “anarcho-tyranny”:

Francis’s term “anarcho-tyranny” refers to armed dictatorship without rule of law, or a Hegelian synthesis when the state tyrannically or oppressively regulates citizens’ lives yet is unable or unwilling to enforce fundamental protective law. Commentators have invoked the term in reference to situations when governments focus on weapon confiscation instead of stopping looters.

Just keep voting for Democrats, and see what happens.
