Am I the Only One Who Remembers . . .

. . . how often we were told that the Catholic Church sex scandals had nothing to do with homosexuality?

Yeah, there was an endless parade of former altar boys coming forward to say they’d been molested by priests, but this was in no way related to the accused priests being gay, you see, and anyone who dared suggest such a thing was a homophobic hater.

We await similar lectures from the same people, telling us that the boy-buggering priest problem is completely unrelated to this latest news:

Kevin Gray, a priest at Sacred Heart Church in Waterbury, Connecticut, is expected to turn himself in after being charged with siphoning $1.3 million from church coffers to pay for his secret gay lifestyle. . . .

Details from the Waterbury (Conn.) American-Republican:

[P]olice say a months-long criminal investigation has revealed the 64-year-old Gray was leading an extravagant double life that his parishioners never knew about.
That secret life included male escorts hired in New York, $200,000 in restaurant bills — including dinners at Tavern on the Green — and hotel stays in the lap of Manhattan luxury, expenses amassed by Gray and paid for with the church’s money, police say. . . .
Police say for the past seven years he cut checks from the church bank account to pay for designer clothes by Armani and overnight stays at Madison Avenue hotels, among a list of other expenses.
Although police believe Gray told his congregation he was battling cancer, detectives have determined Gray has never had cancer.
“I think that’s how he explained his absence from the parish,” said Capt. Christopher Corbett, a police spokesman.

So, Father Gray was actually Father Gay. Evidently finding the Waterbury altar boys insufficiently attractive, Padre Poofter instead decked himself out in an Armani wardrobe, jaunting off to the big city where he wined and dined and snuggled up with rented gay lovers in Manhattan hotels.

And this, we will be told by our enlightened betters, is completely unrelated to anything else that might cross our minds in response to the terms “gay” and “priest” and “scandal.”

Just checked over at Andrew Sullivan’s blog to see if the lecturing had begun. He’s made himself the most famous Catholic gay man in the world and his reaction? Crickets chirping.

By the way, I understand that certain “progressive” Catholics are now organizing a summer program for teenage girls, to be supervised by Joren Van Der Sloot.

Lisa Murkowski’s Palin Problem

Joe Miller is the Republican primary challenger to Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who was rated No. 5 on the Human Events list of “Top 10 Senate RINOs” (and that was when Arlen Specter was still a Republican). The Aug. 24 Alaska primary is the subject of my latest American Spectator column:

Any disinterested political observer would be tempted to rate Murkowski a lead-pipe cinch for re-election. The incumbent has only one major problem, and that problem can be summed up in two words: Sarah Palin.
It was Palin, after all, who beat Frank Murkowski in the 2006 Republican gubernatorial primary. And if anyone doubted the sincerity of Palin’s “maverick” stance, those doubts ought to have been erased last month when the former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice-presidential candidate endorsed Joe Miller. . . .

‘I’ll Have What He’s Having’

OK, I poached the headline from Ace of Spades HQ and, since this video has already gotten more than 600,000 views, you may have seen it already. For those of you who haven’t, the summary: California hippie dude who calls himself “Yosemite Bear” gets insanely joyful at the sight of a double rainbow:

“What does this mean?” Dude: It means you need to cut back on your drug intake.

Perhaps you wondered about the 45% of Californians who think Jerry Brown should be governor again. Now you know.

UPDATE: “Do Marijuana Ballot Initiatives Help Democrats Win?” You don’t have to be on dope to vote Democrat, but it sure helps. (Via Memeorandum.)

Methodists Support Hamas

British Methodists have decided that Israel is evil:

The Methodists boycott no other country.
The fact that an institution professing allegiance to values of love, truth and justice should have succumbed to an agenda of hatred, hypocrisy and barbarism is sadly emblematic of the degraded spirit of our times, and of the moral inversions which blow through them.
But who, these days, can really be surprised about such happenings in modern Europe? . . .

Read the rest. Pamela Geller: “The evil that drove Europe to rid the continent of its Jews is alive and well.”

PROFITS BAD!

Making matters worse, businesses are already plowing fewer profits back into their own enterprises.
Over the past decade and a half, corporations have been saving more and investing less in their own businesses. . . .
The reason for all this saving in the United States is that public companies have become obsessed with quarterly earnings. To show short-term profits, they avoid investing in future growth. . . .

Can you guess where this argument is leading?

[C]orporate executives are being rewarded for myopia and speculation, undermining the very operation of capitalism. We need tax and regulatory policies to counter this destructive development, along with wider recognition that government deficits, when they counteract corporate savings, are necessary and salutary.

Much easier solution: If you don’t like how a corporation operates, don’t buy the stock.

Obama’s War on Food

Orit Sklar at Human Events explains how the Obama administration plans to decide what you eat:

In the current regulatory environment, one may be certain that “recommendations” aren’t mere suggestions. The latest example that calls for a healthy read between the lines is this week’s big unveiling of the Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) “Dietary Guidelines for Americans.”
Though presented as an objective analysis of the state of American health accompanied by “what’s good for you” solutions, it’s really a preview of how our bureaucratic betters intend to justify the coming invasion of our kitchens and our dinner plates. . . .

VIDEO: Rick’s Awesome Fireworks

This year, for the first year in . . . well, forever, I didn’t get to shoot my usual super-awesome Fourth of July fireworks show. Darling Daughter scheduled her wedding for this week, so I was forced to scrap my annual Alabama expedition. One day, I’ll find it in my heart to forgive her, but Sunday night I was profoundly depressed.

Anyway, my good buddy Rick — about whom I could tell you some hilarious stories — was able to shoot his customary super-awesome Fourth of July fireworks show and, now that I’m beginning to emerge from the depths of my daughter-induced pyro-deprived depression, I’ll share his videos with you:

This show was produced with consumer fireworks and, as I’ve often explained to friends, a well-organized consumer fireworks show is actually better than most professional shows. Why? One word: Proximity.

Professional shows require “set backs” of at least a hundred yards between the audience and the launch site, and the shells burst several hundred feet in the air. Bigger shells, but they’re seen at quite a distance. Whereas with consumer fireworks, the safety distance between shooter and audience is only about 50 feet, and most of the shells burst less than 100 feet overhead. As people have often said after seeing my shows for the first time, it feels like being inside the show.

Anyway, if you really know what you’re doing with consumer fireworks — as Rick does — it’s pretty doggone awesome, and completely safe. (Unlike the idiot who got his arm blown off in New York.)

So enjoy the videos, and if you want to cheer me up, contribute to Darling Daughter’s wedding fund. Proceeds in excess of the actual cost of the wedding will help ensure that next year’s Fourth of July is extra-awesome.
