Soccer May Be Gay, But
At Least It’s Not Canadian

I don’t think Allahpundit is Canadian, but he does have a suspiciously extensive knowledge of Broadway show tunes hockey.

IYKWIMAITYD.

The other day, I put up a mocking headline:

World Cup Overkill: Associated Press
Writes 1,068 Words About 1-1 Tie

And proceeded to mock soccer, generally, which prompted commenter “gg” (whose IP address is in India) to respond:

“Wake up from your ‘me me me USA me me USA i can’t see ya!’ mentality. Not as if the rest of the world gives a damn about a stereotype Stupid American like you anyway.”

Yeah, pal? Well, obviously you give enough of a damn to argue with me, don’t ya?

So anyway, the Nation and NPR today decided to inform us that conservatives hate soccer because we’re racist, citing Glenn Beck and G. Gordon Liddy as examples. In point of fact, I played youth-league soccer when I was 12. I covered prep soccer as a sports writer in Georgia. My future son-in-law plays soccer and, believe it or not, I like soccer.

Shall I sing “Wilkommen” from Cabaret now? Or how about “I Feel Pretty” from West Side Story?

But affluent elite American soccer fandom of the type celebrated by the Nation/NPR piece has roughly the same relationship to merely liking soccer that knowing show-tune lyrics has to sodomy  — which is to say, none at all.

When I was in London in 2008, I spent a couple hours hanging out at a pub with a couple of blokes who were drinking away the afternoon in preparation for going to that evening’s Arsenal game/riot. Take away their Cockney accents, and these working-class guys might as well have been a couple of Bubbas gearing up for the Alabama-Auburn game.

They were, in a phrase, British rednecks.

And this is who soccer fans are, everywhere in the world except among the college-educated American elite.

In Rio or Rome, the soccer fan is a Regular José or a Regular Giuseppe. It is a low-brow, blue-collar sport, beloved by rowdy hooligans the way ghetto kids in America love the NBA or hillibillies in east Tennessee love NASCAR.

Out there, in the rest of the world crammed full of foreigners, amongst limeys and wogs, krauts and dagos and chinks — and especially beaners — futbol es muy macho.

By contrast, if an American is that kind of Regular Joe, he doesn’t watch soccer. He watches the NFL or bass fishing tournaments or Ultimate Fighting. In an American context, avid soccer fandom is almost exclusively located among two groups of people (a) foreigners — God bless ’em — and (b) pretentious yuppie snobs.

Which is to say, conservatives don’t hate soccer because we hate brown people. We hate soccer because we hate liberals.

American liberals love soccer not merely because it allows them to engage in displays of their imagined superiority — “Look at me! I’m a sophisticated cosmopolitan!” — but also because it’s usually the only sport they’ve ever actually played.

“Mom Wouldn’t Let Me Play Football” is a convenient shorthand that I’ve used to describe a category of person typified by, inter alia, David Brooks.

Another convenient shorthand: “Never Won a Fistfight.”

They’re pussies, in other words, and they grew up in those vanilla cul-de-sac suburban cocoon communities with “good schools” (hint, hint) where their neurotic mommies and wimpy dads never let them have a moment of leisure that wasn’t safe and supervised and reinforcing to their self-esteem.

Nerf World.

So they grew up sheltered and bookish and prone to whining about their allergies, part of a social group where this kind of childhood seemed perfectly normal, i.e., their fellow wienies with whom they associated in “gifted” classes and band and, above all, youth soccer league.

Soccer is a great sport for sheltered wienie kids, so long as they are in a league where all the other kids are sheltered wienies, too — as is the case in the vanilla cul-de-sac suburban cocoon community where these kids grow up. Why? Because youth soccer requires no athletic ability.

Neither size nor speed, neither strength nor agility — and certainly not eye-hand coordination —  is necessary to participate in the kind of soccer played by elementary-school kids in suburban U.S.A. All the really athletic kids are playing football, baseball or basketball.

Suburban youth soccer is a game for neurasthenic dorks.

Go watch 7- or 8-year-olds play youth-league soccer somewhere in an upscale American suburb and what do you see? Twenty dorky white kids running around willy-nilly while the two kids with anything approaching genuine athletic aptitude score all the goals.

In America, if you’re too clumsy for baseball, too short for basketball and too weak for football, soccer is your game.

Like I said, I spent one spring/summer playing in a YMCA soccer league when I was 12. The explanation is this: Robbie Brown played linebacker on my youth football team, the Sweetwater Valley Red Raiders, for which Robbie’s dad was an assistant coach. Robbie’s dad got the idea that soccer would be good conditioning for football — lots more running than baseball — and so Robbie was going to be on this team, and the word went around to the other parents of the Red Raiders: Hey, if your kid isn’t playing baseball this year, put ’em on this soccer team.

So there were about four of five of us football kids who played on this team in the Marietta YMCA league, and our coach was a German guy named Hans or Karl or something like that.

We sucked.

The coach’s kid was the only member of the team who had ever played soccer before. Me and my handful of football buddies began the season clueless and ended it only slightly less so, while the rest of the kids on the team were of the “Mom Wouldn’t Let Me Play Football” variety.

I can’t remember if we lost every game, but we sure didn’t win more than one or two. We sucked bad.

We did run a lot that summer, though. We ran and ran and ran some more. Hans or Karl was a firm believer in running and so, after soccer ended in July, those of us who played football were in fine condition when the Red Raiders started practice in August. That having been the real purpose of our soccer season, it was a success.

Playing YMCA soccer against those Marietta kids could never be mistaken for the kind of futbol es muy macho experience that produces World Cup champions. While I am unfamiliar with the U.S. team roster, I would hazard a blind guess that a majority of them are immigrants or the sons of immigrants, and not the products of suburban Everybody-Gets-A-Trophy youth-league soccer.

So that’s my soccer story. I’ve got one good friend, the son of Scottish immigrants, who loves soccer in a Regular Joe kind of way. And my daughter’s fiancé — the Romeo of the Pampas, the Latin Lothario — is all ¡Va La Argentina! about the World Cup.

That kind of sincere fandom is one thing. But the affectations of pretentious liberals . . . well, let’s let Ace of Spades explain:

I think I know the reason, and this is the political reason — the real political reason — the right rejects soccer. . . .
Because many conservatives suspect that progressives elevate soccer above other sports for culture war-type reasons, we dig in our heels and say silly things about soccer just to repudiate the left’s own attempt to fight the culture war via a silly pastime.

Read the whole thing.

Like Ronald Reagan Said

Remember this guy from the Doug Hoffman NY-23 campaign?

Yates Walker? Sound familiar? Perhaps you remember him from an article in the The American Spectator:

Yates Walker ate breakfast in the Blue Moon Café on Main Street in Saranac Lake, New York, on the morning of November 4, and delivered an after-action report on the battle that had just been fought in the upstate 23rd District.
“We took a CPA from 9 percent to 46 percent in two and a half weeks,” said Walker, a young veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division who had been hired 18 days earlier to work on Doug Hoffman’s congressional campaign staff. “I couldn’t be prouder.”
He fell 5,000 votes short of defeating Democrat Bill Owens, but Hoffman’s surprising surge in the closing weeks of the three-way special election in upstate New York had, in Walker’s words, turned the bespectacled accountant into “an electric symbol of conservatism.” . . .

Not bad for a last-minute deadline blitz in the Buffalo airport. And maybe if you remember Yates Walker, you also remember the first time you ever heard of filmmaker Ladd Ehlinger Jr.:

I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats

In which case you may also remember when I was a guest on Ladd’s radio show during my April visit to Huntsville, Alabama.

Perhaps, then, you may be asking yourself, whatever happened to those guys? Yates Walker became campaign manager for Rick Barber — whose campaign I covered during a February trip to Alabama — and it just so happens that Ladd Ehlinger recently produced an ad for the Barber campaign:

Which I posted Sunday night in the Hot Air Green Room, and which became an overnight viral YouTube sensation and so, when Allahpundit blogged about it today maybe you’d think . . .

Well, certainly there would be no basis for inferring that there were anything other than coincidental associations involved. These things just happen, y’know?

“You can accomplish much if you don’t care who gets the credit.”
— Ronald Reagan

Credit? Nah. Some cash might be nice, but I don’t need any credit. However, if you don’t want to give me cash, maybe you should give some to . . .

Hope and Change (and Hateful Stereotypes) Liberals Can Believe In

Obama Oddly Unpopular
in Former Slave States

— Josh Marshall, Talking Points Memo

Yeah, thanks Josh. I live in Maryland, a “former slave state” where Obama got 62% of the vote. But never mind that. What does affluent Ivy League a–hole Josh Marshall have to say about Alvin Greene winning the Democrat primary in the “former slave state” of South Carolina?

C’mon, Josh, tell me: Is it OK for white Democrat Vic Rawl to assert that the election of a black Army veteran in a “former slave state” is somehow illegitimate?

What if a Republican in a “former slave state” had questioned Alvin Greene’s “mental status,” Josh? What would you say then?

And while we’re at it, Josh, what about the recent outbreak of political violence from that “former slave state” of North Carolina?

“It’s wrong to accuse liberals of not having standards. They have exactly two — one for them, and one for everybody else.”
— Robert Stacy McCain

Remember: There are 5 A’s in “raaaaacism.”

Rep. Bob Etheridge: ‘Who Are You?’

A Democrat in a Republican-leaning North Carolina District, Etheridge was leaving a fundraiser with Nancy Pelosi when two college kids with a video camera asked him a simple question: “Do you fully support the Obama agenda?” Madcap hijinks ensued:

A “macaca” moment for the Democrat. His Republican challenger is Renee Ellmers.

UPDATE: Department of Unflattering Headlines:

That last headline is from Dave Weigel, who writes:

“So who are the students? I don’t know. The National Republican Congressional Committee tells me they didn’t send them, and ‘DCCameraGuy’ has yet to respond to my e-mail. But without any name or organizational support, just by riling up a member of Congress, the students have created the first conservative meme of the week.”

Just a blind guess: These kids are probably from the Leadership Institute, which trains conservative students in political strategy and tactics. Campaign video “trackers” have been standard operating procedure for Democrats since 2006, at least. What’s strange is Etheridge’s assertion: “I have a right to know who you are.”

Well, does he?

UPDATE II: Instapundit has background, and Dan Riehl highlights Etheridge’s “F” grades on 2nd Amendment rights.

Checking Etheridge’s Wiki, there doesn’t seem to be anything particularly controversial in his past. He’s just a Blue Dog dinosaur, a fossil of the Clinton era elected to Congress in 1996. It’s amazing he’s survived this long, given how he flipped out the first time he was confronted by opposition video trackers.

Wonder how many other Blue Dog Democrats would react the same way to a simple question, e.g., “Rep. John Barrow, why are you trying to keep a progressive black Democrat out of Congress?”

UPDATE III: Etheridge has apologized and the DCCC is “out for blood.”

UPDATE IV: Comment from Renee Ellmers:

“If a teacher or principal treated a student this way it would raise serious questions and he would be suspended. This kind of behavior is equally unacceptable in a Congressman.”

Read the whole thing at Right Wing News.

UPDATE V: Ann Althouse highlights Dave Weigel’s commenter “Bob”:

What [Etheridge] has is the dangerous notion that he’s exempt from the laws of the District of Columbia and from the dictates of a civil society.

Weigel is intrigued by the unwillingness of the students to identify themselves. Dave’s getting a lot of flak from conservatives for his coverage of the incident, although in his defense I’d say that the questions he’s asking — Who are these kids, who are they working for and why was Etheridge their target? — are legitimately newsworthy.

No one is likely to discover the answer to those questions any time soon. Mike Flynn hasn’t returned my calls today, but if Flynn knows the identity of these kids, he’d be a fool to burn his source. I just got off the phone with my source, the “black ops” guy — who was not involved in this operation — who pointed out that (a) by maintaining their anonymity, the kids preserve their ability to do future operati0ns, and (b) on the video, Etheridge appears to have had a few cocktails, so he probably won’t be able to ID the kids.

UPDATE VI: Wow, this is the second time in three weeks I’ve been mentioned by Allahpundit:

Not a single word is devoted to the idea that asking a question of a congressman shouldn’t mean walking away with his palm print on your neck. . . .
Breitbart and Michael Flynn say they have no idea who shot the video; assuming that the students were indeed Republican “trackers,” paid to shadow Democrats in hopes of capturing a gaffe on film, I wait with bated breath for an explanation as to why these guys are illegitimate but the guy who caught George Allen’s “macaca” line on tape is A-OK. As for why they’re anonymous, R.S. McCain offers a persuasive theory: Given the viciousness of the DNC in trying to make this a story about them, wouldn’t you want to stay anonymous too in order to avoid reprisals?

Hmmm. Staying anonymous “in order to avoid reprisals”?

Banks Failing, Taxes Increasing

The FDIC is already $20 billion in the hole and the news just keeps getting worse:

Regulators on Friday shut down a bank in Washington, bringing to 82 the number of U.S. bank failures this year.
Seattle-based Washington First International Bank, with $520.9 million in assets and $441.4 million in deposits, was closed by the Washington Department of Financial Institutions, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. as receiver of the failed bank. . . .
With 82 closures nationwide so far this year, the pace of bank failures is more than double that of 2009, which was already a brisk year for shutdowns. By this time last year, regulators had closed 37 banks. The pace has accelerated as banks’ losses mount on loans made for commercial property and development. . . .
As losses have mounted on loans made for commercial property and development, the growing bank failures have sapped billions of dollars out of the deposit insurance fund. It fell into the red last year, and its deficit stood at $20.7 billion as of March 31.

And guess what? Congress is planning to increase taxes on real-estate partnerships “which own most of the commercial buildings in many U.S. markets.” Yeah, that’ll help.

Optimism, Inc.

Wall Street analysts consistently overestimate the profit potential of companies:

Some economists look at the global economy and see troubles — the European debt crisis, persistently high unemployment worldwide, and housing woes in the U.S. Stock analysts as a group seem unfazed. . . .
Caterpillar, a multinational that gets much of its revenue abroad, is expected to boost its net income by 47 percent this year. Analysts have also hiked their S&P 500 profit estimate for 2011 to $95.53 a share, up from $92.45 at the beginning of January, according to Bloomberg data. That would be a record, surpassing the previous high reached in 2007. . . .
If the analysts are correct, the market would appear to be attractively priced right now. . . .
If history is any guide, chances are good that the analysts are wrong. According to a recent McKinsey report by Marc Goedhart, Rishi Raj, and Abhishek Saxena, “Analysts have been persistently over-optimistic for 25 years,” a stretch that saw them peg earnings growth at 10 percent to 12 percent a year when the actual number was ultimately 6 percent. “On average,” the researchers note, “analysts’ forecasts have been almost 100 percent too high,” even after regulations were enacted to weed out conflicts and improve the rigor of their calculations. . . . [I]n most years analysts have been forced to lower their estimates after it became apparent they had set them too high. . . .

Read the whole thing. The problem with “rosy scenario” forecasts is the gap between exoteric and esoteric knowledge.

It’s like Enron executives who were steadily cashing in their stock options even while they were telling the world and their own employees that everything was just fine, as the company teetered on the brink of collapse. The executives had esoteric knowledge, known only to a handful of insiders, which was obviously much different than the exoteric knowledge available to outsiders.

Think about this in terms of the “jobless recovery.” We are told that various indices show the U.S. economy is experiencing real growth and yet the employment rate remains high — officially 9.7% in May.

Why aren’t companies hiring? Could it be the gap between esoteric and exoteric knowledge? The executives and managers who the decisions that affect hiring at companies know how much money is available to meet payroll. If businesses are not hiring, despite all the economic “good news” being touted to the public, could it be that they know something that the analysts don’t?

Liberal Decides It’s OK to Hint Politicians May Be Hiding Their ‘True’ Religion

No, not Barack Obama. Nikki Haley:

By no means am I questioning their right to convert or their sincerity. . . . I think, instead, that if Haley felt compelled to revise her campaign materials this way, it says a lot about what’s still acceptable to the voters she’s courting.

Neela Bannerjee at Slate scrupulously avoids the Jake Knotts “Nikki the Secret Sikh Raghead” route — Bannerjee is herself of East Indian heritage — but why is it necessary to dwell on Haley’s Sikh ancestry?

Assimilation to a big amorphous “American” identity has been, historically, a slow process for immigrant groups, one that occurs over the course of three or four generations. And some people never discard their hyphenated history. More than 150 years after the Potato Famine, for example, Irish-Americans still tend to be chauvinistic about their heritage — quite proudly Irish, and also often Catholic in the same chip-on-the-shoulder way, as if it would be a personal insult to mistake them for a Methodist or a Lutheran.

Defining oneself as distinct from the Vanilla-American — that stereotypical Wonder-Bread-and-Miracle-Whip WASP — has become a sort of geneaological parlor game since the 1960s. Nowadays, even the blandest of Anglo-American yuppies seem to feel obligated to put an ethnic asterisk beside their ancestry, as if to signify that they’re down with the whole multicultural-diversity agenda.

Sheriff Bart in Blazing Saddles: “My grandmother was Dutch.”

Well, OK. If someone wants to trot out their family tree to make a point, I’m fine with that and will happily share my own pedigree, all the way back to the 18th-century South Carolina forebear through whom I am a distant cousin of that worthless a–hole Republican who lost the election to Obama. (End my family’s shame: Vote for J.D. Hayworth!)

Notice, however, that liberals only want to interrogate the religious and ancestral loyalties of Republicans. Democrats are off-limits.

Anyone who so much as mentions Barack Obama’s middle name is automatically presumed to be a racist Birther wackjob, but the editors at Slate have no problem letting Neela Bannerjee devote 670 words to examining Haley’s Sikh-to-Christian conversion with the suggestive headline, “Nikki, aka Nimrata,” complete with this kind of helpful information:

Punjabis like Haley are often lighter-skinned than the world’s notion of what Indian looks like.

Oh, yeah, and Bannerjee brings up Bobby Jindal for good measure, because it’s always vaguely suspicious to liberals if a Republican isn’t 100% Premium Saltine cracker.

White Guilt, American Shame

If you’ve read Shelby Steele”s book White Guilt, you understand that liberals are engaged in a multi-level strategy to define “Republican” and “conservative” as negative identities by employing a sort of racial jiu-jitsu:

  • Whiteness is bad — If your ancestors arrived with the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, you should be ashamed of yourself, you imperialist oppressor. Not only are white people genetically predisposed to genocidal racism but they are also, at the same time, effete and inauthentic. Ergo, if you’re white, the only way you can purge yourself of this congenital blood-guilt (and implicit lack of ethnic coolness) is through displays of empathy and solidarity with the downtrodden brown masses.
  • Assimilation is bad — Perhaps you are fortunate enough not to be descended from those wicked Dead White Males who raped the continent and annihilated its indigenous peoples. It is therefore necessary that you distinguish yourself as Something Else. You must emphasize that you’re Czech or Greek or Polish because to identify as a regular Vanilla-America would be to implicate yourself in the historic hatefulness of slaveowners like George Washington, Injun-killers like Andrew Jackson and Jap-haters like Harry Truman. Immigrant and their descendants must therefore cling tightly to their hyphens, lest they assimilate themselves into complicity in America’s criminal past.
  • America is bad — Given that its founding, expansion and ascent to superpower status were works of unmitigated White Evil, America can only be “good” insofar as there is Hope that we can Change it into something it never originally was. Only by committing yourself to the Progressive mission of remaking White Evil America into a force for World Peace and Social Justice can you redeem yourself as a sophisticated, enlightened and well-meaning person — a cosmopolitan, a bien-pensant.
  • America’s allies are bad — And, by the logical observse, America’s enemies are good. We must therefore abrogate the “special relationship” with England, embrace Castro’s Cuba, and take up the cause of Good Brown Palestinians at the expense of White Evil Israel.
  • Conservative Republicans are the ultimate bad — To reject the liberal worldview is to repudiate what Thomas Sowell has so aptly described as The Vision of the Anointed. Conservatives thus reveal themselves to be benighted — ignorant and probably also malevolent — by suggesting that the United States is a good country whose Constitution, cultural heritage and traditional institutions are worth defending and preserving.

Like Goethe’s devil cited by Marx in the Nineteenth Brumaire, Progressives believe “everything that exists” — in the sense of anything a conservative would recognize as distinctly American — “deserves to perish.” Because conservatives oppose this crusade to destroy America, and because Republicans are de facto the conservative party in American politics, to be a conservative Republican is to define oneself, in the eyes of the Left, as the Enemy of All That Is Good and True.

Angry Mobs of Enlightened Liberals

That reference to Goethe and Marx, by the way, was borrowed from David Horowitz. In 2007, when Horowitz appeared at George Washington University, I watched in fascination as a small crowd of student protesters outside the auditorium chanted: “Racist! Sexist! Anti-gay! David Horowitz go away!”

It so happens that Horowitz isn’t remotely racist or anti-gay. Although I’ve never really seen him address feminism in any direct fashion, I suppose that by the term “sexist” the students meant to suggest Horowitz was against abortion — and I’m pretty sure he’s pro-choice.

The reality of who Horowitz is and what he believes, you see, was entirely irrelevant to the slogans chanted by those GWU students. They have been indoctrinated to believe that all genuinely decent people are obliged to fight relentlessly against racism, sexism and homophobia (which, as they’ve also been taught, are the bedrock principles of the GOP) and because David Horowitz is a Republican, he automatically represents these Bad Republican Things.

David Horowitz is the son of Communist Party members, still fundamentally committed to many of the same liberal ideals that motivated those slogan-shouting students. Yet his knowledge, beliefs and experiences have led Horowitz to identify himself as a Republican and to ally himself, generally, with conservatives. In answer to the old radical slogan that Pete Seeger turned into a folk anthem — “Whose Side Are You On?” — Horowitz answers, “Not yours, pal.”

Not only does this apostasy provoke the Left to shout false accusations of hatefuless at Horowitz, but it also grants them license to dismiss him with a single word:

“Jew.”

Yes, that’s it! He’s a necon, a Zionist imperialist, a hypocritical special pleader whose opinions on every issue foreign and domestic are merely the external manfestations of his ethno-religious chauvinism. The Left is only too happy to suggest you can’t trust a word David Horowitz says because he is a Jew.

Kenyan Savior vs. Punjabi Menace

No one may do to liberals what liberals do to Horowitz without being condemed as a hatemonger. Critics of Chuck Schumer must be careful never to make any reference to Schumer’s Jewishness. No opponent of Loretta Sanchez can suggest that her Hispanic ancestry somehow explains her political commitments. And don’t even think about criticizing Al Sharpton.

A sort of ideological force-field surrounds liberal ethnic loyalties, so that while Barack Obama may invoke his Kenyan paternity as a political asset — and what else is the authorial teleology of Dreams From My Father? — no opponent is permitted to invoke this factor as a potential liability. The liberal worldview confers upon Obama the presumption of victimhood and then waits vigilantly for opportunities to denounce the presumed victimizers, i.e., Evil White Republicans.

Nikki Haley’s Punjabi ancestry and Sikh upbringing are not similarly off-limits to liberals, because liberals carry with them the presumption of goodwill. If liberals can caricature David Horowitz as a crafty scheming Jew — which is what a liberal means when he calls Horowitz a “neocon” — then it is perfectly fair game for a liberal to suggest that Nikki Haley is a phony sellout trying to pass herself off as a white Christian.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: It’s wrong to accuse liberals of not having standards.

They have exactly two — one for them, and one for everybody else.
