Second Manassas in Kursk Oblast?

Oktyabr’skoe is a Russian village about five miles east of Rylsk, and about 25 miles north of the border with Ukraine. Thursday night, Ukraine hit a Russian truck convoy on the E38 highway in Oktyabr’skoe, possibly wiping out an entire battalion of reinforcements being sent to counter a Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk Oblast. Ukraine’s forces crossed the border Tuesday near the Russian town of Sudzha, and by Thursday were reportedly approaching Korenevo, about 20 miles to the northwest of Sudzha and 12 miles south of Oktyabr’skoe. While there is incomplete information about what happened at Oktyabr’skoe, it has been suggested that the Russian convoy was on its way to reinforce Korenevo, and was hit by rockets from a U.S.-supplied HIMARS battery. HIMARS has an extensive range, so it’s likely that the rocket salvo was fired from Ukrainian positions near Korenevo. Nevertheless, (a) this means the E38 east of Rylsk is effectively off-limits for Russia to send troops or supplies to the front, and (b) the Russians in Korevnevo are going to have to make do without that battalion the Ukrainians just wiped out.

It has been elsewhere been reported that Ukrainian forces are also threatening Lgov, a crossroads town about 25 miles east of Rylsk, so that Russia is dealing with a multi-pronged attack in the region.

All in all, I’m reminded of how Stonewall Jackson opened the Second Manassas campaign by making a flank march and falling on Pope’s supply depot at Manassas Junction. This forced Pope to retreat from the Rappahannock, and to send forces to find Jackson and bring him to battle. Jackson proved elusive, however, and hid his corps near Sudley Springs on the road between Warrenton and Centreville. The next afternoon, when a Union brigade came marching past, Jackson stuck them hard and soon had Pope’s entire army converge on his front. What Pope didn’t know was that Lee had Longstreet’s corp en route to join Jackson, and when Longstreet was finally ready to attack, Pope army was wrecked and beat a hasty retreat back toward Washington.

Similary, the surprise Ukrainian attack into Russia’s weakly defended Kursk Oblast has thrown the Russians completely off-balance. The Ukrainians have so far encountered only light resistance from local defense forces, and when Russia tried to move regular army reinforcements into the region, they got hammered. The Russians have no idea of what the Ukrainians are planning to do next — will they make a lunge toward Kursk city or, perhaps, make a thrust eastward from Sudzha? Like Jackson after raiding Manassas Junction, the Ukrainian forces can sit and wait to see what the Russians send after them, and strike those reinforcements the way they did at Oktyabr’skoe.

Everything that Russia sends to deal with the incursion in Kursk will be subtracted from the forces available in the Donbas region and elsewhere, so that as a diversion, the Kursk campaign doesn’t need to make any major territorial conquests in order to succeed from a strategic perspective. Wisely, the Ukrainians have said nothing about what their intentions or objectives are, but some commentators have suggested that they may have 25,000 or so troops committed to this adventure, which would be plenty enough to wreak havoc in the Russian interior unless and until the Russians can bring sufficient forces into the theatre to force a Ukrainian retreat. And every time Russia tries to move troops along those roads, they risk another Oktyabr’skoe-style catastrophe.

Ukraine’s counter-offensive has taken the strategic initiative away from Russia. There’s no telling how long this Kursk incursion will continue, but Russia’s likely to suffer serious losses while it lasts.

My Patriotic Duty: Posting ‘Material Which Incites Violence or Hatred’

The British Crown Prosecution Services posted a message warning to “THINK BEFORE YOU POST,” telling Brits that they could be prosecuted for “posting material online which incites violence or hatred.” This comes in the aftermath of rioting after three girls were stabbed to death, and eight others injured, in Southport, about 20 miles north of Liverpool.

Here’s the thing: This is all entirely the government’s fault.

After a 17-year-old suspect was arrested for the Southport stabbing attack, the police refused to publicly identify him. Given the pattern around such incidents in England, this led a lot of people to assume that the attacker must be a Muslim immigrant, and so some of the rioters targeted mosques or facilities for so-called “asylum seekers.”

Eventually, the situation was such that officials finally identified the attacker as Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, the son of immigrants from Rwanda. Rudakubana was reportedly born in Cardiff, Wales and, whatever his motive — other than Crazy People Are Dangerous — there is no apparent connection to Islamic radicalism. Therefore, the claim is being made, “misinformation” was to blame for the riots.

No, actually, government secrecy was to blame. If the police had merely released the name and mugshot of the suspect, at least the public would have known that he wasn’t named “Mohammed” or “Abdul,” which was a conclusion many people quickly leapt to, based on recent history of such stabbings not only in England, but all across Europe. And just because it appears the attacker was a deranged teenager — apparently motivated by mental illness, rather than radical ideology — does not mean that complaints about immigration policy are irrelevant or misguided. The cultural dislocations involved in relocating Third World migrants to England (or France, Belgium, Canada, America, etc.) often result in situations like this, where the children of immigrants become alienated or hostile. Even if the immigrants themselves are grateful toward their host country, and eager to have their children take advantage of the available opportunities, the younger generation may not share that attitude, and may not be able to handle the pressure to adapt and assimilate.

It’s not “racist” or “anti-immigrant” to mention this phenomenon, which is widely acknowledged by social workers who deal with immigrant populations, and equally known to advocates of immigration. From a conservative perspective, of course, this problem points toward a simple conclusion about immigration: NUMBERS MATTER.

Assimilation is easier when immigrant populations are relatively small, and the larger the immigrant population, the greater the likelihood of violent conflict. If you have a town of 10,000 people, the arrival of one family of immigrants from Guatemala or Ghana is not going to have much impact on the social fabric; whereas the arrival of 500 or 1,000 immigrants is a whole ’nother thing. When you have mass immigration — which is what England has been dealing with for decades — the potential for trouble rises to a near certainty. Government officials don’t want to tell the truth about the results of their policies, and so a culture of secrecy arises, eroding public trust and leading to exactly the kind of situation that produced riots in the wake of the Southport stabbings.

“UK Authorities Monitoring Social Media, Arresting People for Misinformation,” was Mary Chastain’s headline at Legal Insurrection, which immediately caused me to wonder, “How can I get myself arrested?” Or at least, get me banned in Britain.

‘Sundown Joe’ and World War III

Everybody got a laugh Friday when, after an airport photo-op with hostages recently returned from Russia, Joe Biden wandered away and climbed the steps of the empty plane. Media “fact-checkers” instantly went into spin mode, claiming that what we saw with our own two eyes — an old man exhibiting dementia symptoms — didn’t really happen.

The problem with the media’s political make-believe games is that the president’s duties as Commander-in-Chief cannot be wished away, at a time when events in the Middle East are at a perilous turn:

The U.S. military is repositioning assets and moving additional forces into the Middle East and Europe to defend against a potential attack on Israel by Iran, U.S. officials said.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the deployment of additional Navy destroyers and cruisers, both with offensive and defensive ballistic missile capabilities, as the Pentagon also takes steps to beef up land-based missile defense, Sabrina Singh, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said in a statement Friday evening. An additional squadron of fighter jets also will be deployed to the Middle East to reinforce defensive air support, she said.
The statement did not identify which vessels and units will be involved, but says they will be added to the “broad range of capabilities the U.S. military maintains in the region.”
Austin also has ordered the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier, and its associated escort ships to ensure that an aircraft carrier remains in the region, Singh said. Another carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, was in the Gulf of Oman on Friday and accompanied by several other warships after they recently moved out of the Persian Gulf, a U.S. official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. The shift leaves open the possibility that they will move to Israel if they sail west around Yemen toward the Red Sea.
The moves come after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, and Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah vowed to retaliate after the killing this week of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and a senior Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr. . . .
The events have brought the region closer to full-blown conflict than perhaps at any point since the Gaza war began 10 months ago with a bloody cross-border attack by Hamas.
Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and a group of militias in Iraq and Syria all receive weapons and training from Iran, part of a vast anti-Israel, anti-U.S. network Tehran has supported for years.
U.S. officials had revealed little until Friday evening about how they were preparing for the possibility of an attack, but the White House said Thursday night that President Biden had spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and affirmed his commitment to Israeli security “against all threats from Iran, including its proxy terrorist groups Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.”
“The President discussed efforts to support Israel’s defense against threats, including against ballistic missiles and drones, to include new defensive U.S. military deployments,” said a brief statement summarizing the two leaders’ call.
The recent bloodshed follows a sprawling drone and missile attack by Iran on Israel in April in which the U.S. military intervened, taking down numerous drones and missiles as Israeli forces intercepted others. Iran launched that attack after an Israeli airstrike on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria killed two Iranian generals and other Iranian military personnel.
“As we have demonstrated since October and again in April, the United States’ global defense is dynamic and the Department of Defense retains the capability to deploy on short notice to meet evolving national security threats,” Singh said in her statement on Friday. “The United States also remains intently focused on de-escalating tensions in the region and pushing for a ceasefire as part of a hostage deal to bring the hostages home and end the war in Gaza.”

Is it necessary for the U.S. to deploy aircraft carriers, etc., “to defend against a potential attack on Israel by Iran”? Isn’t Israel capable of handling its own defense? Haven’t they shown themselves self-sufficient in this regard, in many conflicts over the past seven decades?

Excuse me if I get annoyed by American political leaders — not just Joe Biden and the Democrats, but also many Republicans — who seem to think they are obliged to be constantly meddling in the Middle East, as if the Israelis are incapable of self-defense and thus require the U.S. to act as Big Brother to protect them from bullies. This attitude is actually harmful to Israel, since it feeds into a perception widespread among Israel’s enemies that Israel is essentially a U.S.-controlled puppet.

As for the Biden administration’s avowed focus on “de-escalating tensions in the region,” Noah Pollak has relevant thoughts:

All year, Biden, [Secretary of State Anthony] Blinken, and [National Security Advisor Jake] Sullivan lectured and threatened Israel that the only acceptable way to prosecute the war was precision targeting of terrorist leaders that avoided civilian casualties. This week, Israel eliminated two terror leaders in precision strikes. And now Biden is lecturing and threatening Israel for “escalating.” This is a game Israel cannot win, because every time Israel acts, the Democrats change the rules so they can accuse Netanyahu of breaking them. This is Calvinball as foreign policy, fueled by the left’s hatred of the Jewish state. Anything short of national suicide earns the condemnation of the Democrats.

Where is the evidence that Blinken or Sullivan (or anybody else in the Biden administration) are better qualified to judge Israel’s interests than the Israelis themselves? Where is the proof of their superior wisdom on Middle East policy as compared to, e.g., Benjamin Netanyahu?

So here we are, on the brink of a potentially apocalyptic war, with the President of the United States in a mentally-impaired condition while decision-making authority is being exercised by a bunch of arrogant “experts” who never won an election — not even to a county commission seat, much less to any position of executive authority — and we’re just supposed to accept this as normal? Hurry up, November 5!

What Part of Genesis 12:3 Do I Need to Explain to These Crazy Jew-Haters?

While I don’t have any advanced credentials in theology, I would say “don’t f**k with the Jews” is a fair colloquial translation.

Yesterday, my brother was skeptical of the Iranian claim that it was an Israeli missile attack that took out Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, and it turns out that Kirby’s skepticism was justified, because those crafty Jews are even craftier than any Iranian could imagine:

Ismail Haniyeh, a top leader of Hamas, was assassinated on Wednesday by an explosive device covertly smuggled into the Tehran guesthouse where he was staying, according to seven Middle Eastern officials, including two Iranians, and an American official.
The bomb had been hidden approximately two months ago in the guesthouse, according to five of the Middle Eastern officials. The guesthouse is run and protected by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and is part of a large compound, known as Neshat, in an upscale neighborhood of northern Tehran.
Mr. Haniyeh was in Iran’s capital for the presidential inauguration. The bomb was detonated remotely, the five officials said, once it was confirmed that he was inside his room at the guesthouse. The blast also killed a bodyguard.
The explosion shook the building, shattered some windows and caused the partial collapse of an exterior wall, according to the two Iranian officials, members of the Revolutionary Guards briefed on the incident. Such damage was also evident in a photograph of the building shared with The New York Times.
Mr. Haniyeh, who had led Hamas’s political office in Qatar, had stayed at the guesthouse several times when visiting Tehran, according to the Middle Eastern officials. All of the officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to share sensitive details about the assassination.
Iranian officials and Hamas said Wednesday that Israel was responsible for the assassination, an assessment also reached by several U.S. officials who requested anonymity. The assassination threatened to unleash another wave of violence in the Middle East and upend the ongoing negotiations to end the war in Gaza. Mr. Haniyeh had been a top negotiator in the cease-fire talks.
Israel has not publicly acknowledged responsibility for the killing, but Israeli intelligence officials briefed the United States and other Western governments on the details of the operation in the immediate aftermath, according to the five Middle Eastern officials. . . .

You can read the whole thing, but wow! So apparently, Israel was able to (a) identify the guest house where the Hamas leader stayed during previous visits to Tehran, (b) somehow smuggle a bomb past Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, (c) confirm that Haniyeh was there Tuesday night and (d) KABOOM!  That’s some really amazing clandestine work.

So Far, Israel Has Neither Confirmed Nor Denied It Assassinated Hamas Leader

There is no doubt that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is dead. He was killed in Tehran after attending the inauguration of Iran’s new president. However, the claim that Israel is behind Haniyeh’s death is being made by Iran, while the Israeli government has so far been silent.

My brother Kirby pointed this out to me. Why should we assume that Iran is telling the truth about this? How could Israel have accomplished this in the Iranian capital? Isn’t it possible — says Kirby, who pays more attention to this stuff than I do — that Haniyeh had enemies? Enemies inside Hamas? Enemies in Hezbollah? Enemies in Iran?

Kirby suspects, or at least he’s not rulling out, that this assassination could be a “false flag” operation, intended to create a pretext for Iran to attack Israel, and all I can say to such suspicion is, I don’t know.

Here’s what we do know, from the Jerusalem Post:

Khaled Mashaal was tapped to be the new Hamas leader on Wednesday, replacing Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran early Wednesday morning.
Hamas sources said Mashaal is expected to be chosen as the paramount leader of the terror group to replace Ismail Haniyeh, who was eliminated in Iran in the early hours of Wednesday.
Senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya, who is based in Qatar and has headed Hamas negotiators in indirect hostage deal talks with Israel, has also been a possibility for the leadership as he is a favorite of Iran and its allies in the region.
Mashaal became known around the world in 1997 after Israeli agents injected him with poison in a failed assassination attempt on a street outside his office in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
Mashaal, 68, became Hamas’s political leader in exile the year before Israel tried to eliminate him, a post that enabled him to represent the Palestinian Islamist group at meetings with foreign governments around the world, unhindered by tight Israeli travel restrictions that affected other Hamas officials.
Mashaal’s relations with Iran have been strained due to his past support for the Sunni Muslim-led revolt in 2011 against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Mashaal has been a central figure at the top of Hamas since the late 1990s, though he has worked mainly from exile.
Born in Silwad near the West Bank city of Ramallah, Mashaal moved as a boy with his family to the Gulf Arab state of Kuwait.
At the age of 15, he joined the Muslim Brotherhood, which became instrumental in the formation of Hamas in the late 1980s during the First Intifada.
Mashaal became a schoolteacher before turning to lobbying for Hamas from abroad for many years. He was in charge of international fund-raising in Jordan when he escaped assassination after being injected with poison in the street.
Jordan eventually closed Hamas’s bureau in Amman and expelled Mashaal from the Gulf state of Qatar. He moved to Syria in 2001.
Meshaal ran Hamas from exile in Damascus in 2004 until January 2012, when he left the Syrian capital because of President Assad’s fierce crackdown on Sunnis involved in an uprising against him. Mashaal now lives in both Doha and Cairo.
His abrupt departure from Syria initially weakened his position within Hamas. Mashaal himself told Reuters that his move affected relations with Hamas’s main paymaster and weapons supplier – Iran.
In December 2012, Mashaal paid his first visit to the Gaza Strip and delivered the main speech at Hamas’s 25th anniversary rally.
Friction between Mashaal and the Gaza-based Hamas leadership surfaced over his attempts to promote reconciliation with President Mahmoud Abbas, who heads the Palestinian Authority.
Mashaal then announced that he wanted to step down as leader over such tensions and, in 2017, was replaced by his Gaza deputy Haniyeh, who was elected to head the terror group’s political office, also operating overseas.

So there’s all kind of intrigue involved in the sudden change of Hamas leadership in the wake of Haniyeh’s death and, as I pointed out, Israel so far has had no comment on this incident, which could be to the next World War what the assassination of the Austrian archduke was to the First World War. Gavrilo Princip could not be reached for comment.

Never Trumper Max Boot’s Ex-CIA Wife Arrested as Illegal Foreign Agent

The best week ever continues to get even better:

Sue Mi Terry, a former CIA analyst and a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, is accused by federal prosecutors of acting as a secret agent for South Korea.
Terry, whose husband Max Boot regularly falsely accused former President Trump of being a Russian asset, reportedly used her position and access to U.S. officials to provide sensitive information to South Korea in exchange for luxury items and other lavish benefits, according to the indictment, New York Post reported. The allegations state that from Oct. 2013, Terry engaged in activities that compromised her role as an independent foreign policy expert.
Prosecutors claim she disclosed U.S. government secrets and influenced policy decisions to favor South Korea. In return, she allegedly received goods such as a $3,450 Louis Vuitton handbag and a $2,845 Dolce & Gabbana coat, along with dinners at Michelin-starred restaurants, New York Post stated.
One of the key incidents cited in the indictment involves Terry passing notes from a confidential meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken about North Korea to a South Korean intelligence contact immediately after the meeting. Additionally, she reportedly facilitated interactions between South Korean spies and congressional staffers under the guise of social gatherings, the outlet added.
Despite these dealings, Terry never registered as a foreign agent with the Justice Department. She was previously warned by the FBI in 2014 about the potential for foreign influence targeting. After being charged with failing to register as a foreign agent and conspiring to act as one, Terry was released on a $500,000 bond, according to the New York Post.

Let’s be clear: South Korea is an ally, not an enemy. But acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, while pretending to be “an independent foreign policy expert”? That’s a felony, and Max Boot’s wife has been doing it for 10 years — “allegedly,” I hasten to add.

So while self-proclaimed super-patriot Max Boot was (falsely) accusing Trump of being Putin’s stooge, Max’s ex-CIA wife was peddling influence to foreigners in exchange for Louis Vuitton bags. Perfect!

The Warning From Sweden

Sweden has a population of about 10.5 million, or about the same as the state of North Carolina. Twenty years ago, you had to seek out “far right” sources (which, of course, I did) to learn anything about the problems caused by immigration in Sweden. Many of the atrocity tales came from the city of Malmö which, for some reason, was a magnet for Third World immigration and Malmö became notorious as a “no-go zone” ruled by violent foreign gangs. After the surge of migrants circa 2015, however, a taboo topic that was once relegated to obscure right-wing blogs has recently become the subject of mainstream journalism:

“Everyone feels at risk,” declared Charlie Duxbury of the neo-liberal POLITICO website [in October 2023], as he reported that a fourth bombing had occurred in his area of Stockholm since the start of the year. In total, there have been at least 134 bombings across Sweden in 2023, compared to 90 for the entirety of last year. Meanwhile, there have been 289 shootings since the start of the year, following 391 in 2022. . . .
The scale of immigration to the country, which soared in the wake of the 2015 European Migrant Crisis, has meant that now at least one-fifth of Sweden’s population are foreigners.

After a string of bombings this February, Breitbart reported:

Since the police began keeping such statistics in 2018, there have been at least 650 recorded bombings in Sweden.

In terms of gun violence, Sweden has become the Chicago of Europe, so to speak: “Twenty years ago, crimes involving firearms were almost non-existent [in Sweden]. Yet in 2022 the gun murder rate in capital Stockholm was around 25 times higher than in London.” How much has migration transformed Sweden? Among its vastly expanded foreign population, Sweden in 2022 had about 150,000 immigrants from just three African countries — Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia:

“People from Somalia made up the largest group of foreign-born citizens from Africa living in Sweden in 2022, with nearly 70,000 people. Eritreans and Ethiopians made up the second and third largest group, respectively, meaning that a high number of the foreign-born born population from African countries come from the Horn of Africa. This is a region characterized by famines, terrorism, and authoritarian rule over the past decades, resulting in a high number of refugees.”

This is to say nothing at all of the many thousands from Sudan (8,372), Nigeria (8,272), Congo (6,684), Gambia (5,940), Uganda (5,781), Kenya (5,419), etc., and never mind the Turks, Iranians, Afghans, etc.

The political impact has been profound, as Stefan Hedlund, a professor at Sweden’s Uppsala University, wrote in February:

There was a time when Sweden was looked upon by American liberals as an inspirational example of the Scandinavian welfare state. . . .
Present-day Sweden carries the dubious distinction of having the highest rate of gangland killings in Europe. It boasts the lowest average age of serious offenders, with children in their low teens being arrested for murder. Increasing segments of suburbs are officially classified as “especially vulnerable areas,” where it is “hard, bordering on impossible” for the police to operate. In layman’s terms, these are no-go zones, where local clans rule and where first responders will not enter without flak jackets and police escort.
An early warning was provided in 2017 when United States President Donald Trump made a quip about rioting in Sweden: “You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this!” Who indeed? At the time, such comments were met with disdain and ridicule. Today, it is not so funny anymore.
Sweden has transitioned from being a model of inspiration to becoming a warning example. As gangland violence is spreading across borders, its Scandinavian neighbors experience growing fears of ending up in what is known in Denmark as the “Swedish condition.”
Defying an old taboo, the Swedish government has called on the military to assist the police. . . .
While the deterioration in physical security is causing Swedish nationals with entrepreneurial skills to leave the country, it is also becoming increasingly difficult for industry to recruit high-level talent from abroad. These problems are amplified by a deterioration in the quality of education that has resulted from increasing ethnic disorder and outright violence in schools. . . .
The main cause of the crisis is a combination of an open-door migration policy with no accompanying policy to help the newcomers integrate. The consequence has been the emergence of neighborhoods where almost all residents are immigrants, where unemployment rates are very high and where the children of immigrants go to schools where no other children, often not even teachers, are proficient in Swedish. This has served as an incubator for crime, as gangs take over where society fails. . . .
Out of a population of 10.61 million in 2022, a total of 2.14 million were registered as foreign-born, more than double the number in 2000. That comes to just over 20 percent. If a broader definition is used, to include those who are born in Sweden with two foreign-born parents, the number rises to 26 percent. . . .
The reason why the problem has been allowed to get out of control is that so many representatives of the media and of the political establishment have for so long been cocooned in naive views of criminal dangers, leading to extremely lax legislation and enforcement, and of dangerous strains of Islamism, leading to a profound inability to scale up defenses against the current wave of radicalization. Those chickens are now coming home to roost. . . .

Sweden’s once left-wing government is now controlled by a center-right coalition with the support of the far-right Sweden Democrats party, which got 20.5% of the vote in the 2022 parliamentary elections. In order to appease (and possibly co-opt) the Sweden Democrats, the governing coalition has begun taking measures to crack down on crime and discourage further immigration, to the dismay of Sweden’s elite.

“The Sweden as we know it is dying,” Karlstad University Professor Tobias Hübinette said last year, lamenting the evaporation of his country’s left-wing policy traditions, and blaming Swedes for seeking to avoid the dangerous foreigners: “Sweden is perhaps more segregated than any other country in Europe. In cities like Göteborg, Malmo and Stockholm, everybody sees it: the white Swedish population does not live in the same area as the immigrants.” Segregation in Sweden?

Maryland Sheriff Blasts Biden: ‘We Are 1,800 Miles Away from the Southern Border Here in Harford County and the American Citizens Are Not Safe Because of Failed Immigration Policies’

Rachel Morin, a 37-year-old mother of five, was found murdered in August 2023 on a hiking on a trail near Bel Air, Maryland. That’s north of Baltimore, up near the Pennsylvania border, in Harford County, a Republican bastion that hasn’t voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964. On Saturday, the county’s Republican sheriff, Jeffrey Gahler, held a press conference at which he announced that the suspect in the case — linked by DNA evidence — had finally been arrested. And buddy let me tell you, Sheriff Gahler unloaded:

“Just before midnight [Friday] our time, police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, assisted by our federal partners, located and arrested Rachel’s murderer, Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez. So far we have learned that the suspect . . . is a 23-year-old citizen of El Salvador who illegally crossed the border into the United States in February of 2023. We all suspect that perhaps Rachel was not his first victim, and it’s my understanding that this suspect, this monster, fled to the United States illegally after committing the brutal murder of a young woman in El Salvador a month earlier, in January of 2023. Once in our country, and likely emboldened by his anonymity, he brutally attacked a 9-year-old girl and her mother during a home invasion in March of 2023 in Los Angeles. . . .
“It has been a fear of mine that, once we identified this suspect, the result would be exactly this, and I want to now direct these comments to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and to every member in both chambers of Congress: We are 1,800 miles away — here in Harford County — we are 1,800 miles away from the southern border here in Harford County and the American citizens are not safe because of failed immigration policies.
“This is the second time in just two years that an innocent Harford County woman has lost her life to a criminal in our country illegally. Let me repeat that: Eighteen hundred miles from the southern border and this is the second woman in our county to be killed by an illegal alien. In both cases, they are suspects from El Salvador with ties to criminal gangs. Should not be happening.
“Victor Hernandez did not come here to make a better life for himself or for his family. He came here to escape a crime he committed in El Salvador. He came here and murdered Rachel and, God willing, no one else. But that should have never been allowed to happen.”

 

That’s going to leave a mark.
