If Obama Has Lost Garance …

Posted on | April 6, 2013 | 27 Comments

Garance Franke-Ruta is a serious lefty writer, and also a friend of mine, and she gets all critical theory in analyzing President Obama’s declaration that Kamala Harris is the “best-looking attorney general,” saying that the president’s error was “in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power.”

As a journalist, I must note that Obama’s remark was factually inaccurate: Pam Bondi is much better-looking than Harris.

Permit me also to observe that the widespread outrage over the president’s compliment could be interpreted as further proof of Rush Limbaugh’s Undeniable Truth of Life #24: “Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women access to the mainstream of society.”

This great truth has been misunderstood as “sexist” or “misogynistic,” an accusation that is only true under the definition of those terms as describing any man who disagrees with a feminist.

Is life unfair to unattractive women? Yes. No one can argue with that. But life is also unfair to short guys — studies show that taller men have higher incomes, so that their competitive advantage in the Darwinian mating pool yields compound interest: Women prefer taller men and richer men, and the fact that taller men are also generally richer . . . well, unfair, eh?

Alas, the Marxoid practitioners of critical theory have shown little interest in the grievances of runts, even as the patriarchal oppression of women has spawned an entire industry: Women’s Studies departments at universities, a vast library of feminist literature, and terroristic militants who enforce a de facto policy of excluding from public life anyone who questions the basic premises of feminism.

Compelling critics into fearful silence is, after all, why the coven of witches at Harvard insisted on destroying Larry Summers — to make of him a scarecrow example, to warn others that any speculation about “innate differences” between men and women will not be tolerated in the corridors of elite academia, where young geniuses are indoctrinated to accept without question the egalitarian dogma of the One True Faith.

In this environment — one in which the slightest skepticism toward the One True Faith is viewed as heresy — even the President of the United States can be compelled to apologize for what was intended as a jocular compliment.

Well, I could write thousands of words about this and not finish, but it’s not yet National Offend a Feminist Week (which this year will be May 6-12). However, I would like to tell a brief story to help explain Garance Franke-Ruta’s grievance.

Last Monday, I covered a candidate forum in Hilton Head, S.C., featuring Mark Sanford and Curtis Bostic. The forum was held at a restaurant, Aunt Chilada’s. When it was over,  I decided to have lunch at the bar. There were three blue-collar workers, employees of an industrial air-conditioning contractor, also having lunch at the bar.

These guys were flirting with the young barmaid — “chatting her up,” as the Brits would say — and the barmaid didn’t seem to mind in the least. She bantered with the guys, volunteering the fact that she was a college student who also worked nights at another bar, and suggesting they stop by to see her there, too. The barmaid didn’t impress me as particularly beautiful. She was, however, young and slender and, for a bunch of guys who spend their days with a bunch of other guys sweating on construction sites to install HVAC systems, the chance to talk to this college-age girl who, working for tips, had an obvious incentive to be friendly, was not a chance to be missed.

Were those guys “sexist”? Were they engaged in harassment? Was this what lawyers would call a hostile work environment?

Bullshit.

It was just guys being guys — authentic, normal, natural — and if the barmaid wasn’t offended by their attentions, why should anyone else be offended on her behalf?

Feminists don’t generally inhabit the milieu of barmaids and blue-collar guys. Feminism flourishes in the white-collar world of office life, and especially in the world of intellectuals, the only place such a War Against Human Nature can avoid contact with the stubborn realities of life.

Garance Franke-Ruta is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard, not a would-be school teacher working as a barmaid to pay her way through state university. Like all intellectuals — and certainly, any political journalist qualifies as an intellectual to some degree, under Friedrich Hayek’s definition of that term — Garance expects to be judged by the quality of her work, and is offended by the idea that “the system of beauty” might intrude itself into her sphere of activity.

But it inevitably does, doesn’t it?

Even in the world of progressive journalism — yea, verily, even among feminists themselves — a certain career premium is afforded to the pretty “lipstick feminist,” the telegenic “It Girl” who can manage to be sexy even while she’s denouncing the Damned Misogynistic Patriarchy.

Can you say “Naomi Wolf,” boys and girls? It certainly did not hinder her career as a feminist intellectual to be green-eyed and dimpled, and there are many other progressive females who have learned that good looks can be advantageous to their advancement as feminist spokespersons. And I suppose there are scores of highly qualified left-wing women intellectuals who watch MSNBC every day and see Krystal Ball making an idiot of herself and wonder, “What’s she got that I ain’t got?”

Well, a six-figure salary at MSNBC, for starters.

And if you don’t understand why feminism can never rid the world of that kind of blatant unfairness, ladies, you obviously haven’t been paying enough attention to what Rush Limbaugh has been trying to explain to you all these years.

Feminist are so cute when they’re angry. And they’re always angry.

Long Overdue Brutal Honesty

Posted on | April 5, 2013 | 14 Comments

Some helpful background:

James Lohr, who has the words “Hard” and “Luck” tattooed where his eyebrows would be, was taken into custody early Friday in Colorado Springs. He was wanted for questioning in the slaying of Department of Corrections Director Tom Clements. . . .
Lohr has been wanted in Las Animas County in southeastern Colorado. He was arrested for violating a protection order in Trinidad on Dec. 1, 2012, after police found that he’d been drinking with friends at a tattoo shop. According to court documents, drinking was a violation of a protective order against him, and he was arrested. Lohr then failed to appear in court in that case Feb. 20, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. . .
Lohr has a criminal record going back to 1992. In 1996, after he pleaded guilty to burglarizing a home, court records show he was ordered to have no contact with his estranged wife after she told police he repeatedly broke into her home and stole items to pawn.
In 2006, Lohr was charged with burglary with a weapon and assault causing serious bodily injury. Court records show those charged were dismissed because of a lack of evidence.

Burglary and assault and violating parole are not “hard luck.”

Also, getting tattoos on your face? That’s not “hard luck,” either, unless you attribute your hopeless stupidity to “hard luck.”

Next time someone expects you to feel sorry for criminals — as victims of society — just keep this idiot in mind.

Classic: Anti-Gun Pennsylvania Mayor Drunkenly Seeks Oral Sex — at Gunpoint

Posted on | April 5, 2013 | 34 Comments

James Schiliro, mayor of Marcus Hook, Pa., was one of the few Republican members of Michael Bloomberg’s “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” group. Now, however, Schiliro has been scrubbed from the group’s Web site. Gee, I wonder why?

The mayor of Marcus Hook was charged [March 21] with holding an acquaintance hostage during a drunken encounter at his home last month that allegedly ended with the mayor’s firing a gun into the floor.
During the encounter, Mayor James D. Schiliro repeatedly offered to perform a sex act with the 20-year-old male, according to police. . . .
Schiliro, 38, was arraigned Thursday before District Judge David R. Griffin, who set unsecured bail at $50,000. Schiliro was charged with recklessly endangering another person, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, furnishing alcohol to a minor, and official oppression. . . .
According to court records, on the night of Feb. 21 Schiliro sent a text message to the man, whom he had known for several years.
He later ordered a borough police officer to pick the man up in Trainer and take him to Schiliro’s home in a police vehicle. While there, the man said, he was given what he believed were three glasses of wine.
According to the man, Schiliro, who was intoxicated, asked repeatedly whether he could perform oral sex on him. . . .
According to court records, Schiliro waved three handguns during the encounter. At one point, he put a gun to his head and said “he didn’t want to live anymore,” according to court documents.

Remember, these are only allegations, and I especially caution against generalizing from this example to presume that all Republicans who support gun control are dangerous cocksuckers.

At least, not literally . . .

UPDATE: My apologies to New Jersey residents for mistakenly placing the Pennsylvania town in your state. Corrected.

UPDATE II: Welcome, Instapundit readers! And in the interests of bipartisan non-judgmentalism, I’ll quote this Reddit commenter:

Did SiteMeter Commit Suicide?
UPDATE: It’s Working Again, But Unfortunately, My Traffic Sucks

Posted on | April 5, 2013 | 26 Comments

As of right now, it’s dead. Donald Douglas at American Power and Doug Ross at Director Blue both report that the best, easiest-to-use traffic analytics site failed to renew its domain registration, an error that would require a special kind of stupidity.

Let’s all say a prayer that they can get it fixed, because without SiteMeter, I feel like I’m blogging blind.

People talk about other analytic software as being technologically superior, but here’s the thing: SiteMeter allowed sites to make their traffic data public in real-time. This permitted apples-to-apples comparisons between sites, which was especially helpful information for entry-level bloggers trying to figure out how to grow their traffic.

You could not only know what your own site traffic was at any time, but you could also see who had more or less traffic, and whose links were driving traffic to other sites. Some bloggers (foolishly, IMO) set their SiteMeters to private, as if they were embarrassed to reveal their traffic data, or as if they failed to understand the value of transparency. “No shame in my game” has always been my attitude, and I simply can’t understand why anyone would attempt to conceal their traffic data as if it were a proprietary trade secret.

Constantly checking SiteMeter is a deeply ingrained habit for many of us, an addiction classified as a symptom of Blogger Mood Disorder by Professor William Jacobson,  (See also “Site Meter Envy” and “Sitemeterenfreude.”)

There was a time when Technorati was also useful as an analytic tool for bloggers, but they “improved” it until they ruined it,  and if SiteMeter has now managed to commit online seppuku, this would represent a real loss to the blogging community.

UPDATE: Linked by Ed Driscoll and Charles G. Hill and now — without explanation — SiteMeter is working again, which is depressing, because my traffic sucks so far today.

Ignorance is truly bliss sometimes . . .

Teen Sex News: Federal Judge Orders ‘Morning After’ Pills for Underage Girls

Posted on | April 5, 2013 | 16 Comments

Poster for 1967 film, Teenage Mother

It is illegal to have sex with minors, but because perverts can’t help themselves, the federal government will now be their accomplice in getting rid of the evidence:

A federal judge ruled Friday that the government must make the most common morning-after pill available over the counter for all ages, instead of requiring a prescription for girls 16 and younger. . . .
Edward R. Korman of Federal District Court, ruled that the government’s refusal to lift restrictions on access to the pill was “arbitrary, capricious, and unreasonable.”
Judge Korman ordered the F.D.A. to lift any age and sale restrictions on the pill, Plan B One-Step, and its generic versions, within 30 days.
“More than 12 years have passed since the citizen petition was filed and 8 years since this lawsuit commenced,” the judge wrote. “The F.D.A. has engaged in intolerable delays in processing the petition. Indeed, it could accurately be described as an administrative agency filibuster.”

Reuters quotes Nancy Northup, president of the abortion-lobby group, Center for Reproductive Rights: “Women all over the country will no longer face arbitrary delays and barriers just to get emergency contraception.” And by “women all over the country,” of course, she meant jailbait girls who don’t want their Moms to find out they’re screwing around.

In 2011, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius explained why the Obama administration did not approve non-prescription sales of Plan B to teenagers:

“The average age of the onset of menstruation for girls in the United States is 12.4 years. However, about ten percent of girls are physically capable of bearing children by 11.1 years of age. It is common knowledge that there are significant cognitive and behavioral differences between older adolescent girls and the youngest girls of reproductive age. If the application were approved, the product would be available, without prescription, for all girls of reproductive age.
“Because I do not believe enough data were presented to support the application to make Plan B One-Step available over the counter for all girls of reproductive age.”

What Sebelius did not say — but which everyone who has studied the matter knows — is that providing this drug to minors without parental permission would abet the criminal exploitation of girls. It’s the same issue with abortion for minors: In many cases, teenagers who become pregnant are in relationships with adult men; a trip to the abortion clinic is a way to eliminate the DNA-testable evidence of such crimes.

Steven Ertelt at LifeNews.com reports:

Jeanne Monahan, Director of Family Research Council’s Center for Human Dignity, told LifeNews after the [2011] decision: “A decision to make Plan B available for girls under the age of 17 without a prescription would not have been in the interest of young women’s health. Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was right to reject the FDA recommendation to make this potent drug available over the counter to young girls. In her own words, the research submitted to the FDA did not include data for all ages for which the drug would be used.”
“Additionally, young people have approximately half of the sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) nationwide, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The availability of Plan B over-the-counter for all ages would have bypassed necessary routine medical care for sexually active girls. And a study released in 2010 revealed that adolescent use of Plan B was correlated with an increase in unplanned pregnancies and a high STD rate,” she said.
“There is also the issue of sexual abuse and exploitation. The average age of a girl who is sexually trafficked in the U.S. is 13 to 14. There is a real danger that Plan B could be given to young women, especially sexually abused minors, under coercion or without their consent. Interaction with medical professionals is a major screening and defense mechanism for victims of sexual abuse,” she continued.

Obviously, the “pro-sex feminists” are all in favor of providing abortion-inducing drugs to middle-school girls: “Whoo hooo! Now this just makes common sense . . . . I think this deserves a 30-second dance party” — and that’s a direct quote, you misogynistic patriarchal anti-sex theocrats.

The Left views anything that undermines traditional morality as a good thing, even if the result is increased misery. Teenage sex? Good. Teenage abortion? Better. And nothing is more important to the Left than destroying marriage:

More American couples are now living together — and having children — without marriage, and most cohabiting couples break up without marrying, a new federal study finds.
Fifty-five percent of women have been in an unmarried cohabitation relationship with a man by the time they are 25 years old, according to “First Premarital Cohabitation in the United States: 2006–2010 National Survey of Family Growth” (click here to see the PDF document). The study by researchers Casey E. Copen, Kimberly Daniels and William D. Mosher was published Thursday by the National Center for Health Statistics.
“Instead of marriage, people are moving into cohabitation as a first union,” Copen told USA Today. “It’s kind of a ubiquitous phenomenon now.” . . .
The study found that cohabitation was particularly common among women with less education, and among Hispanics. For women without a high-school diploma, 76 percent had cohabited by age 25, compared to 36 percent of women with a college degree.

Also, from the study, this interesting fact: “By age 18, 9% of women aged 15–44 in 2006–2010 had ever cohabited.” In other words, nearly one out of every 10 underaged girls in America is now shacking up.

And the liberals call this Progress.

UPDATE: As to where this kind of Progress is leading, Rusty Shackleford was shocked to discover that the age of consent in Mexico is 12: “Can that be true? It just seems so hard to believe.”

You can look it up for yourself.

‘New Motherf–king Tone’ Update, and Also: New Commie Wonkette Editor

Posted on | April 5, 2013 | 24 Comments

Gay-rights activists are among the most hateful people in the world. Remember the Prop 8 reaction in 2008?

Taking to the streets in furious indignation, activists created an “enemies list” of those who had contributed to support the measure, targeting them for boycotts and protests.
The elderly co-owner of a Mexican restaurant, who had given $100 to support the referendum, was driven to tears as she confronted “60 members of Los Angeles’ LGBT community” who demanded an apology and an equal contribution to a proposed effort to repeal the referendum. . . .
One activist who helped compile the enemies list told Time magazine: “My goal was to make it socially unacceptable to give huge amounts of money to take away the rights of one particular group, a minority group.” Of course, the restaurant owner’s $100 contribution to the “Yes on 8” cause was not “huge,” but the principle is the same.
As the California activists spewed their fury — allegedly vandalizing Mormon temples, making terroristic threats toward Catholics, and hurling racial epithets at African-Americans (who voted 3-to-1 in favor of Prop 8, according to exit polls) — their vitriolic rage highlighted how the progressive rhetoric of “rights” undermines and destabilizes political consensus.

Homosexuality has gone from being “the love that dare not speak its name” to being “the political agenda that won’t shut up,” and its enthusiasts — 3.4 percent of the U.S. population, according to a Gallup poll last year — seem determined to make up in angry outrage what they lack in numbers. Tim Graham calls attention to one Daily Kos diarist’s self-righteous rant:

Do you not remember who you motherf–kers are? . . .
You no good low-rent gaggle of hateful self-serving bigot-for-hire whiny a– titty babies.
Entire election cycles were gleefully covered in slick wall-to-wall homophobia and hatred.
Remember that sh-t? Good. Now go f–k yourselves. Here. Here’s a ratty leather glove covered in rusty spikes. No. No. Here’s two. You can all go bend over and collectively fist each other in a frenzy until all the pain equals all the hate and the stupid you have given us for ages in spades. You all made your bones stoking and exploitating hate. . . .
Eat all your sh–t and feel some real f–-king shame.
Calling you ‘Bigots’ to your collective faces is just a really, really good f–king start.

Isn’t it time for Mary Katharine Ham to do a sequel to this video?

Some of you young people might not believe it, but there was a time when being gay was mostly about sex. Also, disco.

Then, during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, being gay became mostly about blaming Republicans for AIDS. Nowadays, being gay seems to be mostly about wishing violent death on Republicans.

How homosexuality changed from being a personal preference to being a political identity is deserving of an essay or even an entire book, but nobody’s offering to pay me to write either. Still I can’t help but wonder: Is hating Republicans really that much more fun than sex and disco?

Speaking of fun and hate, M. Joseph Sheppard is a blogger I’ve sometimes linked and vice-versa, and he cited me as an authority on the “Red Diaper” milieu that produced Obama’s top political advisor David Axelrod. There is a backstory: It seems that Wonkette got a new editor, Rebecca Schoenkopf, a self-declared “Commie,” and Sheppard was having some kind of tiff with the aforesaid Commie who — in “punching down” at her stubborn nemesis — threw in the accusation that Sheppard is “constantly citing white supremacist Robert Stacy McCain as some kind of moral authority.”

Sheppard brought this to my attention on Twitter, and when I checked over at Wonkette, I noticed they had moved on from punching down at Sheppard (and his “white supremacist” friend) to calling Michelle Malkin an “anchor baby.”

Because they’re all about racial equality, you see.

And then I immediately hit Joe Sheppard’s tip-jar for $20, and now recommend that everybody else do the same.

Anybody who pisses off a Commie that much deserves it.
