How About That Commitment To Mediocrity

by Smitty

Update: crossed out a word, added a couple to the first sentence of the second para to avoid a friendly fire incident.

Insty links spaceflightnow.com discussing the possible abandonment of the International Space Station. The Russkies are having lift problems, which puts them ahead of the U.S., which currently ain’t got no sack whatsoever.

This is why I’m not sure it’s good not to be purely libertarian on the topic of space. I don’t know what the libertarian argument in favor of a space program is. As a conservative, one can ask if, unlike ObamaCare, space flight can be argued as a federal task. Space actually has significant national security impacts, and falls neatly under the federal task to provide such.

And have a space program we should. Its one of those national inspiration things that are cool, without explicitely making other countries look bad. We all benefit from the technology trickle-down, like the integrated circuit for the Apollo program.

Instead of pushing the edge, we get ObamaCare. Managing individual health is not a federal Constitutional task, irrespective of the mental gymnastics of the lawyers and judges. Beside being wrongheaded, and wasteful, socialist programs like ObamaCare insidiously divert resources from inspirational programs like space flight, and pour them down a mediocre money hole of health care. Instead of motivational pictures of the stars-and-stripes on the moon, we get a pallet of generic cough syrup that does little but provide jobs to some paper-pushers. Certainly doesn’t improve anyone’s existence.

Set low goals; fail to meet them. Thanks for nothing, Progressives.

“Act Now,” Says Lagarde, As In “Keep The Kabuki Caterwauling, Kids”

by Smitty via Drudge

“The standard old bits of farce are losing traction on the world stage,” she was not quoted as saying, “as more people have access to information. [NSFW] 73 percent of Americans are no longer able to suspend their disbelief for our merde.”
What she did say was:

She called for a “mandatory substantial recapitalization,” through private channels if possible, but otherwise through some form of public, Europe-wide funding, such as the European Financial Stability Facility.
Lagarde also warned advanced economies away from tightening their belts so fast that it imperils recovery.
“Put simply, macroeconomic policies must support growth,” the former French economy minister said. On Friday, she made the same point in a phone conversation with U.S. President Barack Obama, in which the White House said they agreed on the need for policies to spur job creation.

Translated out of Prog-speak, this means:

“Public officials must re-invigorate their dance routines, and shake their money-fabricators, to keep the audience focused on policy as the ultimate source of solutions. If the lumpen proletariat goes old-school and relies on archaic sources such as the private economy, capitalism, and individual industry to recover from the idiocies of globalization, then the very core of Progressive Theater itself could be threatened.

  • Bureaucratic slugs could find themselves exposed to the harsh light of competition.
  • People may realize that musicians using AutoTune are self-identifying as useless hacks.
  • Independent thought could break out, triggering a loss of faith in Holy Progress.

This possibility must, of course, be crushed like Gibson guitars.”

‘Self-Appointed Republican Elites’

Nothing says “grassroots populism” quite like a column in Politico:

A wave of fear has come over Washington — and it’s not the earthquake or the hurricane. Self-appointed Republican elites, fretting Hill Republicans and left-wing carnival barkers all have one thing in common: Perryphobia.
It’s an acute condition, with different manifestations. But it has the same root cause – arrogance toward Texas Gov. Rick Perry. . . .

A list of “Perryphobia” sufferers ensues and then . . .

Finally, and this is my personal favorite, we have those self-appointed Republican elites. You know the type: they wear the Adam Smith tie; yammer at us on FOX News all day; read the Journal with devotional religious fervor; skip church to watch “Meet the Press,” and make their living off the generosity of people they secretly look down on with benevolent disdain.

OK, so let’s skip down to the Politico columnist’s bio blurb:

Curt Anderson is a Republican strategist and a partner at OnMessage Inc., a GOP media and polling firm.

Anderson’s polling/PR/strategy firm is based inside the Beltway, in Alexandria, Virginia, and lists among its clients the Republican National Committee, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Republican Governors Association. Anderson is former political director of the RNC, worked on the Bush-Cheney campaigns in 2000 and 2004, and also worked on Mitt Romney’s 2008 campaign.

So if you’re looking for a grassroots anti-elitist who courageously stands up to the GOP Establishment, then obviously Curt Anderson’s your man.

Professional Republican consultants: Vox populi, vox dei.

Are You Smelling What He’s Stepping In?

by Smitty

The mighty Iowahawk:
The Politico link has some follow-up:

Kay Henderson has more on this, emphasis mine:

Another reporter pressed the issue, asking if Perry believes Medicare is “unconstitutional” as well.

“I never said it was unconstitutional,” Perry said. “I look at Medicare just like I look at Social Security. They’re programs that aren’t working and we ought to have a national conversation about it. You know, those that have said I’ve said they’re unconstitutional — I’m going to have them read the book. That’s not what I said.”

In his book, Perry called Social Security something akin to a “bad disease” that was created “at the expense of respect for the Constitution and limited government.”

The whole episode underscores how difficult “Fed Up!,” which strongly favors states’ rights and is getting picked over by reporters and opposition researchers alike, will be for Perry to explain on the trail.

Discussions of major changes to Social Security are alarming to seniors, and while there hasn’t yet been public polling data on how the “Ponzi scheme” point plays in Florida, there likely will be.

For Perry, saying a version of “that’s not what I said” is unlikely to do the trick.

I’ll grant our over-reaching federal government this much nuance: these leech-like socialist programs are legal, insofar as legislation was excreted, signed into law, and has passed SCOTUS muster when brought up for review.

Past that, it’s long since time that we call the bluff on the Ruling Class cretins. The unicorn math doesn’t work outside the Beltway. The more Perry tells the truth, the more he paves the way for truth to leak into the settling pond of our current political discourse. (Readers who have been to Kandahar know what I mean.)

This blog strongly approves of any candidates with the guts to call ‘nonsense’ on the steaming pile of unsustainable crap comprised of our federal entitlement programs.

The interesting question raised by the Politico article is whether the Boomers are sufficiently enslaved by entitlements. Are they indoctrinated into beliefs about ‘rights’ to Social Security and Medicare that have become velvet handcuffs over time, so that the Boomers can be manipulated into turning against a candidate like a Perry, or a Cain, or a Santorum, who has the courage to speak the truth? I wish that ideas of liberty and American Exceptionalism were sufficiently strong to make that a silly question, but they are not.

O’Rourke famously noted that 2010 was not an election; it was a restraining order. 2012, therefore, will be liberty on trial, prosecuted by a Progressive werewolf in bespoke and Gucchis. Will conservatives rally around a McCotter, or even Palin? Or will they be deceived and support Romney, whose hair is perfect?

SOTD: Hammer To Fall

Obama Beats the Hurricane?

He saved America!

“I want people to understand that this is not over,” President Barack Obama said Sunday evening from Washington. “The impacts of this storm will be felt for some time, and the recovery effort will last for weeks or longer.”

Wait — “not over”? But by the time it finally came ashore in New Jersey, it wasn’t even a hurricane anymore:

It was raining in Manhattan on Sunday morning, and the dogged correspondents in their brightly colored windbreakers were getting wet.
But the apocalypse that cable television had been trumpeting had failed to materialize. And at 9 a.m., you could almost hear the air come out of the media’s hot-air balloon of constant coverage when Hurricane Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm.
Not everyone was willing to accept this turn of events. When the Weather Channel’s Brian Norcross told MSNBC that forecasters had been expecting the first hurricane to make landfall in New York City since 1893 — “and it didn’t happen” — anchor Alex Witt was openly skeptical.
“Really, Brian?” she asked.
Hadn’t Irene technically still been a hurricane when it came ashore in New York an hour earlier? “Can’t we still go with that?”
No, Norcross said.

Now do you see what all that TV hurricane hype was about? Global warming causes a hurricane to hit New York City — a horrific, historic disaster — and then Obama triumphantly leads the relief effort. It was a Hollywood-perfect narrative arc.

Unfortunately, the storm didn’t cooperate:

The three-day count of deaths related to the storm rose to at least 16 in six states . . .

The category “storm-related deaths” is quite flexible — at least one of them was a guy who had a heart attack while working to nail boards over his windows. And then there was that Florida surfer . . .

Well, dead is dead. But 16 deaths? Every year, more than 30,000 Americans are killed in auto accidents — nearly 100 a day on average. And the world-historic cataclysm requiring a “recovery effort [that] will last for weeks or longer”? Give me a freaking break.

The Pagan Temple observed last week that my choice of Rihanna pics for one of the “Live At Five” posts was less than optimal, and posted what he felt was a better one. Judge for yourself, and enjoy the video. Randy’s Roundtable has the incandescent Tamarra Hey and Holly Weber, and the eye of Polyphemus lights this week on Miranda Kerr. The Rio Norte Line picks up the slack in the SF babe department with Sucker Punch‘s Jamie Chung, while the Pegu Blog returns after a long absence with a little something for the ladies. Over at Reaganite Republican, it’s the second installment of Hot Romanian Chicks – and yes, I know Stacy already did a post on it, but it’s in my in-box and I’m linking it.

A View From The Beach has Milla Jovovich (did you know she has a singing career?) and Kate Winslet – Live Action Heroine! Jake Finnegan’s Burkalesque Babe this week is Katy Perry, and Dustbury this week features Vicky Leandros and Florence Welch of Florence And The Machine.

Soylent Green kicks off the week with Morena Corwin as the Monday Motivationer, provides some titillation on Tuesday, Jessica Burciaga on Hump Day, something about physicals on Thursday, the justly celebrated Corset Friday, and a greeting to Russian Go(oglers).

Proof Positive this week has Clair Cooper, Vintage Babe Yvonne Furneaux, and Miss Turkey in the weekly “Sex In Advertising” feature.

The Camp of the Saints directs our attention to Carla Ossa, who is indeed awesome; also, the Rule 5 News and Carol Ficatier. Maggie’s Notebook observes the passing of Tropical Storm Irene by posting a lot of Olivia Munn in swimwear. Very nice.

The DaleyGator’s DaleyBabes this week include Halle Berry, Catherine Oxenburg, Jamie Alexander, nude Ukrainian feminists, Asian Babe Wednesday, Katerina Graham, Autumn Reeser, and Piper Perabo

We had several late submissions this week; normally I would have gone ahead and done them, but this isn’t a normal weekend. Al Gore: If You Disagree With Me About Global Warming … RAAAAACIST!

Could he possibly get more pathetic than this?

When Bogusky questioned the analogy, asking if the scientific reasoning behind climate change skeptics might throw a wrench into the good and evil comparison with racism, Gore did not back down.
“I think it’s the same where the moral component is concerned and where the facts are concerned I think it is important to get that out there, absolutely,” Gore said.

Sister Toldjah says “the science, no matter what Al Gore says, is far from settled and that we should avoid implementing sweeping policies until we know much, much more. By which time, I suspect, we’ll recognize them for the poisonous cures to a problem that does not exist that they are and can toss them onto the intellectual trash heap with the ‘flat earth’ theories and Piltdown Man.”
