Never Take Advice from Your Enemies

For example, Harry Reid:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday urged Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to ditch members of the Tea Party and cut a deal with Democrats to avert a government shutdown.
Reid insisted it is those GOP internal divisions that are threatening to shut down the government after April 8, in less than two weeks.
“For the sake of our economy, it’s time for mainstream Republicans to stand up to the Tea Party and rejoin Democrats at the table to negotiate a responsible solution that cuts spending while protecting jobs,” he said.

First point: No Republican is “threatening to shut down the government.” The House of Representatives is controlled by Republicans. The Senate is controlled by Harry Reid and it is he who, by rejecting the House budget plan, is trying to force a shutdown, which he clearly hopes to blame on the GOP.

(Question: Are reporters at The Hill professionally obliged to report Reid’s dishonest rhetoric in this credulous manner, as if they were stenographers or publicists at a p.r. firm? The Hill‘s Erik Wasson “reports” three entire paragraphs quoted directly from Reid’s press release and it is not until the eighth paragraph of Wasson’s article that he begins to permit the GOP to respond.)

Second point: Republicans are doing a piss-poor job of explaining the shamelessly deceptive game being played by Reid and the Democrats, who are not being directly called out on their use of the federal budget as a political hostage. Every day, in every statement, in every public appearance, Republicans should point out that the current negotiations are the result of Nancy Pelosi’s failure, when Democrats held an insuperable majority in the House, to pass a budget for Fiscal Year 2011. Had Pelosi and the Democrats done their job last year, we would not be in our current “crisis” mode, and any attempt to scapegoat the GOP for this situation is nothing but a damned lie.

Third point: If Boehner lets Reid get away with this kind of stuff — driving a wedge into the GOP House caucus — it is Boehner, and not Reid, who is to blame.

The overwhelming Republican victory in 2010 was a clear mandate for reducing the out-of-control deficit spending that has been a deliberate part of the Obama administration’s misguided Keynesian economic policy. In the current budget negotiations, Reid and the Democrats are trying to “win” retroactively an election campaign they lost.

These are self-evident political facts, which are not complex or “nuanced,” and which any taxpayer can easily understand. If Boehner, Cantor and other GOP leaders are unable to articulate these facts, if they let themselves be bamboozled into arguing policy in the phony terms dictated by Democrats, then they do not deserve to be called “leaders,” and deserve the defeat into which they seem to be stumbling.

UPDATE: More stenography from Erik Wasson of The Hill:

Senate Democrats and the White House on Monday were working to finalize a new counteroffer to the GOP on 2011 spending cuts.
The counteroffer would cut an additional $20 billion from 2011 spending on top of the $10 billion already cut by two short-term continuing resolutions enacted this month, sources close to the talks said.

Today is the first time I’d ever noticed Wasson’s byline (he joined The Hill staff in November) and, as in the previous Harry Reid story, here Wasson offers eight consecutive paragraphs of Democrat talking points before making an “oh-by-the-way” gesture toward letting Republicans reply.

Good Tactically, But What Of Strategy?

by Smitty (via Insty)

So the GOP is serving up paper cuts on the deficit dragon, and some think that’s OK, for example Fred Barnes in the WSJ:

There’s every reason to believe the incremental strategy would continue to succeed. Democrats are flummoxed by it. They’d like to block more cuts, but they’ve been unable to explain why spending reductions of a few billion dollars at a clip are unacceptable. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid tried, only to embarrass himself by saying Nevada’s cowboy poetry festival might be jeopardized. Mr. Obama has prudently declined to wade in.

There is good news in keeping a finger pointing to one of the major albatrosses about the Presidential neck. What’s unnerving, though, is the lack of a major counter-proposal to the overall big, fat, bloated albatross nest that is Washington DC.
Leadership has to point to an albatross eradication program to eliminate these birds in a systematic way.
The Left is quite justified in thinking the GOP is merely stoking anti-albatross emotions, plucking that chicken-like bird for party gain, if you will, if the GOP leadership doesn’t demand significant, no-kidding changes. GOP weenies, stand by for a rough primary if you don’t get real busy, real soon.

Yemen: This Is Not Good News

Associated Press:

Islamic militants seized control of a weapons factory, a strategic mountain and a nearby town in the southern Yemen province of Abyan Sunday, said a witness and security officials, as a political stalemate in the capital causes security to unravel around the country.

Of course, if you are concerned by such developments, this is just proof that you’re an Islamaphobic bigot. You know, like Herman Cain.

Herman Cain Refuses to Be Intimidated by Political Correctness

When Think Progress accuses him of “bigotry,” you know that’s got to help him in the GOP primaries:

There is this creeping attempt, there is this attempt to gradually ease Sharia law and the Muslim faith into our government. It does not belong in our government. This is what happened in Europe. And little by little, to try and be politically correct, they made this little change, they made this little change. And now they’ve got a social problem that they don’t know what to do with hardly.

A statement that has the virtue of being absolutely true. I’m sure Mark Steyn, Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, Melanie Phillips and many others who have written about the Islamicization of Europe will applaud Cain’s courage in describing the problem so forthrightly.

UPDATE: The Underground Conservative:

When we have a circuit judge in Florida announcing that he will rule on a case using sharia law rather than state law or the U.S. Constitution, we have a problem.

All the more reason to join the grassroots online army at Citizens for Cain.

Definition of ‘Misogynist’

A guy who thinks feminists are funny when they’re angry.

And of course, they’re always angry, aren’t they? “Dilbert” cartoonist Scott Adams mocked them for fun:

This weekend the top twitter meme in the solar system, at least for a few hours, involved Feminist blogs calling me an ignorant, misogynist asshole.

Adams explains that what seemed to be an over-the-top putdown of women on his blog was, in fact, a satire of the thinking of the so-called “men’s rights movement.” What he accidentally proved — as if we needed more proof — is the well-known fact that feminists can’t take a joke. The joke they couldn’t take was this:

The reality is that women are treated differently by society for exactly the same reason that children and the mentally handicapped are treated differently. It’s just easier this way for everyone. You don’t argue with a four-year old about why he shouldn’t eat candy for dinner. You don’t punch a mentally handicapped guy even if he punches you first. And you don’t argue when a women tells you she’s only making 80 cents to your dollar. It’s the path of least resistance. You save your energy for more important battles.

This paragraph, as such, is offensive. But when you consider that it was part of a post in which Adams addressed himself to the “men’s rights movement” — making it clear that he has no interest in joining their disgruntled Beta-male drum-circle whinefest — perhaps you can begin to see that the joke is not actually at the expense of women.
