A Relevant Parable

Once on a snowy evening, a woman went for a walk and happened upon a snake. The snake had strayed from his nest before the winter storm hit and, unable to make it back underground in time, was now nearly frozen to death. Seeing its beautiful colors and having pity, the woman decided to rescue the snake. So she took it home and nursed it back to health, thinking to keep it as a pet.

And then one day, the snake bit her. As the fatal poison took hold, the woman cried out, “How could you do this, after I saved your life?”

To which the snake replied: “Lady, you knew I was a snake when you found me.”

Gateway Pundit reports that the last shred of Bart Stupak’s honor is essentially gone:

The Obama Administration will give Pennsylvania $160 million to set up a new “high-risk” insurance program under a provision of the federal health care legislation enacted in March.

It has quietly approved a plan submitted by an appointee of pro-abortion Governor Edward Rendell under which the new program will cover any abortion that is legal in Pennsylvania.

So, a Stupakian bargain is like a Faustian bargain, only everyone knows you’re a chump at the signing, and you don’t even enjoy a jolly hedonistic year and a day before the perfidy overtakes the fool:

As part of the agreement, the White House announced that President Obama would issue an executive order on abortion after the House approves the health-care bill assuring that no federal funds would be used to subsidize the procedure. That was enough to secure the support of a group of Catholic Democrats who represent the swing votes on the legislation.

How would Obama react to this turn of events in the hypothetical case that he (a) held a press conference, and (b) was called on this question by some reporter planted amidst the clutch of sycophants? “The policy was clearly misinterpreted,” or “the executive order no longer applies once the money is transferred to the state.”
What a sick, twisted, un-representative situation we find ourselves in. The following Nine Inch Nails cut is safe for work. I wonder to what degree it correlates to the monologue unfolding in the head of the POTUS:

Sex, Science, Monogamy and Survival

While checking in to see what Dave Weigel was doing at Andrew Sullivan’s “Daily Dish” — addressing the Trig Truther problem, among other things — I came across Chris Bodener’s latest post in a series, “The Evolutionary Case Against Monogamy,” which is every bit the bass-ackward exercise in Darwinian pretzel-logic that you might imagine.

Let’s begin with what should be an obvious question: Which requires more discipline to achieve, chastity or promiscuity?

We may consider it self-evident that virtue requires discipline, and discipline demands greater intellectual focus than does decadence. A major reason promiscuity has traditionally been stigmatized — and is still disdained by wise people — is that it is so frequently associated with other vices, including sloth and dishonesty. And this is true of societies as well as individuals. Ancient Rome declined in large measure because its leadership caste, once stubbornly attached to hardy virtue, became decadent and corrupt. Thorough knowledge of that history informed the concerns of the American founders most famously expressed by John Adams:

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Once we elevate our gaze above the level of mere mammalian biology (the mating habits of bonobo chimps, etc.) and study the actual history of human civilizations, we can see the folly of any argument that aims at the derogation of pre-marital chastity and marital fidelity. And the “evolutionary” argument is as easily disproven as any of them.

Humans are not mere beasts, and human survival is dependent on many factors absent in the animal kingdom, where instinct suffices. For mankind to propagate, advance and flourish — to succeed as a species — requires that the young be nurtured and taught the skills, habits and beliefs that have sustained their ancestors. While it is possible for individual humans to survive anarchy, violence and poverty, it is impossible for human society to progress under such conditions.

Progress requires a sense of permanence and continuity, the notion that there is a future for which we must prepare. The integrity of the family historically has been protected by law because peace, stability and order are necessary to the general advancement and improvement of mankind’s condition.

“The cultural achievement of a people can be correlated with the degree of sexual continence they observe; and indeed is directly based upon it. Societies . . . which place no restriction . . . upon the early satisfaction of the sexual impulses, are at a ‘dead level of conception’; they possess the power of reason but they do not apply it to the world of their experience; a sense of responsibility has no place in their social vision.”
— Raymond Firth, reviewing Unwin’s Sex and Culture (1934)

After a half-century of encroaching decadence in America, we now have many soi-dissant intellectuals about whom we might well say, “a sense of responsibility has no place in their social vision.” Their misanthropic contempt for our inherited traditions is not coincidentally related to their lack of concern for our legacy to the future:

“To live for the moment is the prevailing passion— to live for yourself, not for your predecessors or posterity. We are fast losing the sense of historical continuity, the sense of belonging to a succession of generations originating in the past and stretching into the future.”
—Christopher Lasch, The Culture of Narcissism (1979)

Faithfulness to ancient vows and a concern for long-term interests — not only one’s own interests, but the interests of one’s spouse, children and community — requires a larger vision than the puerile short-sightedness that would urge us to pursue the ultimately destructive impulses of selfish hedonism.

Those who resort to anthropological or biological justifications for promiscuity are transparently attempting to provide a patina of scientific authority for an ideology of selfishness, urging us to adopt habits incompatible with our survival as a civilization. If we imitate the sexual habits of bonobos, we can’t complain if the result is a Culture of Savagery, characterized by inhuman cruelty.

When we see authors calling for “a more flexible approach to sexual fidelity” in the name of science, we ought to be as skeptical of their science as we are of their motives. Personally, I wouldn’t trust such people any farther than I could throw them, and the fact that Andrew Sullivan relies on such “scientists” . . . Well, that’s not exactly a strong recommendation, is it?

At any rate, monogamy is very directly related to my own personal survival. You see, Mrs. Other McCain has a kitchen full of knives, and I’ve got to sleep sometime.

If We Can Beat Barbara Mikulski . . .

. . . we can beat anybody:

Maryland has a fiscal conservative Republican candidate who can win the race in November for U.S. Senate against Democrat incumbent Barbara Mikulski and his name is Jim Rutledge. . . .
If Jim Rutledge wins the Republican primary election on Sept. 14, HE is the candidate who can beat Barbara Mikulski in the general election on Nov. 2.

Cynthia Yockey provides this video of Rutledge’s speech at the July 3 Tea Party in Bel Air, Maryland:

If he’s good enough for Cynthia, he’s good enough for me!

JIM RUTLEDGE for U.S. SENATE

UPDATE: Rutledge will have a happy hour meet-and-greet Thursday at the Dark Horse Tavern in Bel Air. And while Cynthia is most impressed with Rutledge’s economic conservative message, let’s point out that he’s also solid on the Second Amendment and he also believes in the “unalienable” Right to Life.

UPDATE II: What does Rutledge need? A real P.R. genius:

Click here and re-Tweet that message. If Sarah Palin endorses Rutledge, that’s game, set, match in the GOP primary.

Americans Realize It Won’t Work

The failure of Obamanomics becomes obvious:

A pair of new polls find that with less than four months until the midterm elections, Americans’ confidence in President Obama’s handling of the economy continues to crater.
A new Washington Post/ABC News poll finds that just 43 percent approve of Obama’s handling of the economy, with 54 percent disapproving. . . .
These results are further confirmed by a CBS News poll, with 40 percent saying they had confidence in Obama, and 54 percent saying they did not.

Nancy Pelosi thinks unemployment checks create jobs, but the real job-creators know better:

Confidence among U.S. small businesses fell in June to the lowest level in three months as projections for profits, sales and economic conditions weakened, a private survey found.
The National Federation of Independent Business’s optimism index decreased to 89 from May’s 92.2 reading that was the highest since September 2008, the Washington-based group said today. Seven of the index’s 10 components dropped, led by a decline in the economic outlook six months from now. . . .
The report shows employment stalled last month while executives planned to trim investment and inventories as they waited for demand to strengthen.
“Headwinds for the economy are still strong, making forward progress difficult to make and to hold,” William Dunkelberg, the group’s chief economist, said in a statement. “The small business sector is not on a positive trajectory and with this half of the private sector missing in action, the poor growth performance is no surprise.”

The FDIC closed another four banks Friday — bringing the year-to-date total to 90 — and, while the stock market is currently riding a week of gains, major investors say long-term prospects are worsening:

Investors have turned bearish in their outlook for the global economy and corporate earnings, according to the BofA Merrill Lynch Survey of Fund Managers for July.
The survey shows a net 12 percent of respondents predicting the global economy will deteriorate in the coming 12 months, the first negative forecast since February 2009. . . . .
“July’s survey echoes the sentiment that investors expressed during the recession in early 2009,” said Gary Baker, head of European Equities strategy at BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research.

It Won’t Work. It Still Won’t Work. It’s Still Not Working.

UPDATE: From the comments: “George Steinbrenner dies and the markets go up about 170 points. Coincidence? I think not.”

The De-Crackerization of California

Adios, gringos!

California’s white population has declined since 2000 at an unprecedented rate, hastening the day when Hispanics will be the state’s largest population group, according to newly released state figures. . . .
By 2008, whites made up 40 percent of Californians, down from 47 percent at the turn of the century. . . .
Hans Johnson, a demographer at the Public Policy Institute of California, said white women in recent decades have tended to pursue higher-education degrees and stay in the workplace, leading them to have fewer children. The white population is now “below the replacement” level, Johnson said. “They’re simply not replacing themselves.”

Or just chill out and wait for the crackers to kill their own babies.
