June: Best. Month. Evah!

Yes, it’s official: At about 5 p.m. today, we recorded hit #146,806 for June, making this the highest-traffic month since The Other McCain switched to WordPress format in January.

The traffic has been great this month. The revenue? Not so much. Which means it’s time to remind our readers about the Coolest Swag Evah!

Here’s the design featured on the mug:

We’ve already received our initial order of six dozen mugs and, with the help of Mrs. Other McCain and our numerous children, I’ve begun packing up mugs and shipping them to our most reliable tip-jar hitters. Maybe some of you guys who’ve already received your mugs can testify in the comments to how wicked awesome they are.

Let me emphasize that no one can buy these mugs. These are gifts — just a small token of our appreciation for the readers who have contributed to keep the blog going. Also, my daughter’s getting married in two weeks, so there’s another reason to hit the tip jar.

American Imperialists 1, Third World 0

Why is Fox Sports hiring neurasthenic wienies like Jason Whitlock?

The World Cup narrows our view and, more than any other sporting event, baits us to give in to nationalism, jingoism and racism. It’s not the Olympics. Not everyone is invited. And no one pretends the month of World Cup play is a reason to celebrate and respect the world’s numerous cultures.
The World Cup owes much of its popularity to hate. It’s the anti-Olympics. It’s an excuse for bigots to mask their biases in sporting patriotism.

Screw you, you commie-loving pinko elitist. Let me tell you what’s going to happen: First, we’re gonna stomp Ghana so bad their children will be born cross-eyed. And then we’ll kick the crap out of whoever wins the Uruguay-South Korea game. After that . . .

Well, who cares? They’re all just a bunch of stinking foreigners anyway and we don’t even like this stupid sissy game.

We just like stomping foreigners. Because we’re red-blooded Americans.

USA! USA! USA!

P.S.: We’re greedy capitalists, too.

Sharron Angle 48%, Harry Reid 41%

Nevada is not wild about Harry, according to Rasmussen, and Professor William Jacobson observes:

What is amazing is that for the past two weeks Harry Reid has been pouring on the attacks against Angle, both through his own advertising, astroturfing, and through friends in the mainstream media and left-wing blogosphere.

Reid’s union-goon buddies are even using ads on conservative blogs to attack Angle.

Why isn’t it working? The Reid campaign has been pumping out opposition research on Angle, depicting her as a dangerous extremist — “she said this” and “she voted for that” and the predictable “she wants to take away granny’s Social Security check.”

The problem for Harry is that when people in Nevada turn on their TVs, they look at Sharron Angle and don’t see the person portrayed by the Reid attack. Instead, they see . . .

Sharron Angle.

She may not be the greatest living American political leader, but she doesn’t “fit the profile” of a scary kook. She seems like a nice ordinary woman — your Mom or your wife or your neighbor.

Most Nevada voters only recently learned Angle’s name as a result of her Cinderella upset of Sue Lowden in the GOP primary. What they’ve seen of Angle with their own eyes and heard with their own ears, they like, and so when she comes under attack, these voters ask themselves: “Why is Harry Reid saying those mean things about her? What is he so afraid of?”

Think: Charles Johnson vs. Pamela Geller.

At some point, the credibility and motives of the attacker become a legitimate subject of inquiry. People rightly consider this a question of character. Once the attacker is demonstrated to be a vicious bully, the details of his accusations become irrelevant. He loses the argument for a simple reason: Nobody likes a bully, especially a bully who picks on girls.

Meanwhile, Professor Jacobson reminds us that Harry Reid called General David Petraeus a liar. If John Cornyn and the NRSC knew what they were doing — strictly a hypothetical, of course — Reid’s attacks on Gen. Petraeus would already be the subject of a Nevada campaign ad.

SHARRON ANGLE FOR U.S. SENATE

VIDEO: Al Gore Sex Scandal

KGW-TV in Portland, Oregon:

The masseuse told investigators about an evening massage session during which Gore allegedly became enraged at times and tried to gain sexual favors from the woman.
“I was shocked and I did not massage beyond what is considered a safe, nonsexual area of the abdomen,” she said. “He further insisted and acted angry, becoming verbally sharp and loud.”
“I went into much deeper shock as I realized it appeared he was demanding sexual favors or sexual behaviors.” The woman said Gore grabbed her hand and shoved it toward his pubic area.
She alleged he later tried to have sex with her and began caressing her before she squirmed out of his grasp.

Some reporters had the original 2006 police report three years ago:

Police say that, back in 2007, they released the initial three-page report regarding the incident after receiving a public records request from the Portland Tribune. An article on the newspaper’s web site Wednesday indicated that the paper chose not to report the story at that time, in part due to the woman’s desire to remain anonymous.

A 73-page follow-up police report from last year.

UPDATE: Really, I’m kind of surprised that Instapundit missed a chance to employ this headline: “They told me if I voted for John McCain, police would ignore sexual brutality against women . . .”

The Flemish Menace Returns!

Yes, it’s true. Those dangerous “ultra-nationalists” who inspired Charles Johnson’s insane fears — Belgium Uber Alles! — recently popped up on the political radar again, as Jesse Walker of Reason magazine reports:

In last week’s Belgian elections, the secessionist New Flemish Alliance emerged as the largest party in Parliament; if the group achieves its agenda, Flanders will soon be independent of Belgium . . .

The rhetoric of the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (NVA) is less strident than Vlaams Belang, but the ultimate agenda is the same:

Today, Flanders — tomorrow, the world!

Iron My Shirt, Megan McArdle!

She’s a newlywed, but I doubt her husband (Reason magazine’s Peter Suderman) would dare say that to her. Nevertheless, the World’s Tallest Female Blogger seems to be taking a wifely interest in household appliances:

Yesterday, The Washington Post told the sad story of the last ironing board factory in the United States. To protect the jobs of 200 workers, imported Chinese ironing boards are hit with tariffs from 70 to 150 percent.

She goes on to discuss the idiocy of protectionism, which is only one of numerous governmental hindrances imposed on the U.S. economy in the past century.

The attempt to substitute political interference for the efficiencies of market competition always yields bad results. Unfortunately, by the time the effects become apparent (e.g., the bankruptcy of General Motors) the complex causes can be difficult to unravel. Rather than undo the damage of bad policies by repealing them, a society that has become habituated to thinking of government as its economic savior will typically respond by attempting to implement new regulations or subsidies.

It should at least arouse public curiosity that U.S. manufacturers of common household wares cannot compete with foreign manufacturers at a time when nearly 10 percent of Americans are officially counted as unemployed, to say nothing of the so-called “discouraged” workers who’ve stopped looking for jobs. Millions of American workers are available, but are in essence priced out of the worldwide labor market by U.S. government policy.

As Thomas Sowell has observed, what counts with liberals are the good intentions of their policies, rather than the actual results. Acting as if the Law of Unintended Consequences could be repealed, liberals repeatedly make the same fundamental policy error of assuming that economic interventions will have exactly the desired effect, and no other.

Trying to stimulate the housing market, federal policy inadvertantly pushed new home sales to a record low last month. And as the example of ironing-board tariffs illustrates, policies aimed at “protecting” American jobs have similarly self-defeating effects.

Good intentions pave the road to a well-known destination. If you need directions, just ask Megan McArdle to iron your shirt.

I’m sure she’ll be happy to tell you where to go.

UPDATE: About 10 seconds after I posted this, I noticed that what I’d thought was a post by Megan was actually a guest-post by Katherine Mangu-Ward. But I’m sure she’d also be happy to tell you where to go.

Holy Crap! Oregon Prosecutor Confirms National Enquirer Al Gore Sex Scandal

This morning, I treated it as a joke, but it turns out to be a legit news story:

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office confirmed today that a woman who alleged unwanted sexual contact by Al Gore reported it to police in 2006, and the prosecutor’s office was briefed by the Portland Police Bureau in late 2006 and January 2007.
“We were told the woman was not willing to be interviewed by the Portland Police Bureau and did not want a criminal investigation to proceed,’’ Multnomah County District Attorney Michael Schrunk said, in a prepared statement.
Today, as the National Enquirer reported that it had interviewed a Portland masseuse who complained of unwanted sexual contact by the former vice president at the Hotel Lucia on Oct. 24, 2006, the district attorney’s office was notified that the Portland Police Bureau had conducted a further investigation of the allegation in 2009.

UPDATE: Steve Milloy:

The same day that Al Gore allegedly sexually attacked a masseuse in Portland, Oregon, he said the following at a presentation of his infamous slide show:
“[Global warming] will give us the chance to experience something few generations ever know – a sense of moral purpose.” [Source: The Columbian (Vancouver, WA), Oct. 25, 2006]

Milloy is the author of Green Hell: How Environmentalists Plan to Control Your Life and What You Can Do to Stop Them.

UPDATE II: One of Instapundit’s readers: “Gore, according to the masseuse’s description, is not only deeply weird, but also a thug who committed a sexual assault upon that woman. As far as I am concerned, that is serious stuff.”
