The Rape of Credibility: Feminism’s Agenda and the Jackie Coakley Scandal
Posted on | December 9, 2014 | 99 Comments
@ChuckCJohnson reports that the young woman pictured above is named Jackie Coakley, and that she was the main source for Rolling Stone‘s sensational (and now discredited) story about an alleged 2012 gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity house.
Can I say for certain that Coakley has been correctly identified? I cannot, but (a) I have named my source, (b) so far as I know, neither Rolling Stone nor anyone else has denied this identification of Coakley as their source, and (c) you can check it out for yourself.
The Internet is a wonderful thing. Google is your friend.
“I think a crime of rape off campus or a crime of rape on campus ought to be treated the same way. And the sooner it’s treated the same way, the sooner the message is going to get out that you can’t get away with something on campus that you couldn’t get away with someplace else. . . . It’s high time to make sure that a crime is a crime wherever it is committed and treated the same way. And when it is treated universally the same way we will have less rape on campuses.”
— Sen. Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republican
A woman with an agenda named Sabrina Rubin Erdely was hunting for a nice juicy campus rape story to “report” and Jackie Coakley was apparently willing to tell Erdely such a story. Some people are hashtagging this #UVAHoax, and I am not prepared to say that the Rolling Stone is a hoax, per se. It was certainly a shabby excuse for journalism. Rolling Stone raped its own credibility and, in doing so, exposed the fundamental problem with feminism’s “rape culture” narrative, as Robby Soave explains quite well at Reason magazine:
Suppose Jackie’s story was not so incredible. Suppose that premeditated, ritualistic gang rape was a plausible occurrence at the average college. Suppose that one in every five — or four, or three — female students found themselves in serious danger of assault the moment they set foot outside their dorm rooms. Suppose that America’s campuses really did rival Somalia in terms of the violence faced by young women. . . .
On the other hand, suppose the details of Jackie’s story were exaggerated, or in doubt. Suppose that premeditated, ritualistic gang rape was highly implausible. Suppose that cherry-picked statistics from a few unrepresentative studies were clearly masking an extraordinary decline in rape rates nationwide over the past few decades. Suppose the best available evidence suggested that campuses were, on the whole, safer for women than other environments. Suppose that campus sexual assaults were largely the work of a few sociopaths and nearly always the result of alcohol-induced incapacitation.
Wouldn’t the supposed solution to the campus rape crisis look markedly different?
Please read the whole thing, but you get the basic point: What we have here is a conflict between (a) known facts about rape on college and university campuses, and (b) controversial and tendentious claims about campus rape made by feminist ideologues.
“The problem is [Erdely] found a story that was embellished. It didn’t hold up.”
— Rolling Stone staffer, quoted in the New York Observer
“According to Got News, Jackie Coakley has misled several students at her high school and college about her sexual history, suggesting she may have completely fabricated rape stories and sexual abuse within her past relationships with men.”
— Benjamin Simon, Inquisitor
Here’s the thing: We don’t know what we don’t know.
That is to say, drunk college kids — and massive alcohol consumption is nearly always involved in these incidents — are unreliable narrators about what they did while they were drunk. The incessant demand of feminists that we must “believe the victims” requires us to be clairvoyant, to read the minds of two drunk teenagers and to witness (with our extra-sensory perception) the scene in a darkened dorm room where a sexual encounter occurred to which the only actual witnesses were the drunk teenagers themselves.
Indisputable evidence is generally lacking in these cases, and the testimony of the accused and accuser are all we have to evaluate. What happens is that we make what we call “common sense” judgments. Alas, many people’s version of “common sense” is heavily influenced by feminist rhetoric that depicts all males as sexual oppressors, which requires the rest of us to reply, “No, you’re crazy.”
The epidemic of campus rape is so self-evident that there's no need to tell the truth about it. #UVA #LenaDunham

Agreed. Feminism is "something terrible" MT @AgQueue “Something terrible happened to Jackie.” http://t.co/lyM4cpUtIq @feministing #tcot
— Robert Stacy McCain (@rsmccain) December 9, 2014
Is Jackie Coakley the source for Rolling Stone‘s story? Did the incident described in that story actually happen? We don’t know.
It is not “rape culture” to say we don’t know what happened, and it is not ethical journalism to report as fact things you don’t know.
Chuck Johnson says that Jackie Coakley is Rolling Stone‘s source, and that she has been a feminist activist since high school. It is now the job of reporters to investigate and discover as many of the facts as can be discovered about this story, in an effort to determine how it was that Rolling Stone got suckered into this journalistic catastrophe.
Prediction: Within a week, we will see Rolling Stone‘s source being interviewed on a major network TV program.
"Thou shalt not bear false witness." I read that in a book when I was a kid. #UVA #JackieCoakley @wdana @SabrinaRErdely

Emerging Awareness Update
Posted on | December 8, 2014 | 93 Comments
In last year’s Windsor decision, the Supreme Court decided that its own “Emerging Awareness” Doctrine made sodomy the lawful equivalent of holy matrimony. Those of us who criticized that decision were ridiculed as alarmists for warning that Justice Anthony Kennedy’s decree would have bad consequences. Am I the only one who has noticed that the news has gotten increasingly weird since then?
A 54-year-old Massachusetts man has been arrested and charged for impregnating a 12-year-old girl . . .
Elbert Richardson, of Brockton, MA, pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated rape of a child and indecent assault on a child under 14. . . .
The victim . . . went to the hospital in need of medical attention and it was there she discovered that she was eight months pregnant. Authorities say that she was unaware of her pregnancy prior to the hospital visit. The girl was reportedly raped in April, and after learning that she was 32 weeks pregnant she told police that Richardson was the father. . . .
When word spread that the victim was pregnant, Richardson’s wife told the witness that a “13-year-old boy down the street” impregnated her
Richardson’s wife has defended her husband, saying that the allegations are false and that she has never witnessed him sexually abusing anyone. . . .
“We’re going to get DNA and the DNA is going to decide whether this young lady is telling the truth or whether the defendant is telling the truth. It’s one of those situations that does have a very permanent resolution to it,” Judge Ronald Moynahan said. “It’s not going to be a, ‘He said, she said’ once that DNA comes back.”
Elbert Richardson’s wife defended him because she believes in civil rights, you see. A child molester is presumed innocent until the DNA evidence proves he got the 12-year-old girl pregnant. It’s just like the way Hillary Clinton pretended to believe Bill Clinton’s claim that he didn’t have sex with Monica Lewinsky until the stain on Monica’s blue dress proved Bill and Hillary are both liars. Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania:
Necrophilia motivated a man to fatally shoot his stepdaughter last month, according to a Pennsylvania prosecutor.
Gregory Graf recorded himself sexually abusing the body of Jessica Padgett, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said on Friday. The video was discovered a day earlier on Graf’s computer, the prosecutor said.
Padgett, 33, was last seen alive on Nov. 21, when she left work at a day care center. Graf was arrested five days later after police found her body buried behind a shed on the property where he lives with Padgett’s mother.
Graf, 53, is being held without bail on a homicide charge. The fencing company owner confessed to killing Padgett, a recently married mother of three, according to Morganelli. . . .
Morganelli said Graf will be charged with abuse of a corpse. . . .
(Which is still illegal, despite the Windsor ruling.)
‘He videotaped it,’ Morganelli told Philly.com.
‘So there’s a videotape of him abusing the corpse sexually.’
Morganelli said he believes that Graf took his stepdaughter’s life in order to abuse her as a corpse.
‘I believe it was a direct motive, in my opinion,’ Morganelli said, ‘and that’s what we’re going to be arguing.’
Because the alleged abuse occurred after Padgett was killed Morganelli will not be able to seek the death penalty.
Philly.com reports that under Pennsylvania law rape and murder allow prosecutors to pursue capital charges but sexual desecration of a corpse does not.
Liberals can thank the ACLU for saving Gregory Graf from the “cruel and unusual punishment” of the death penalty. Now, if only Justice Kennedy and the Supreme Court could do something to help our society end the ignorant prejudice of necrophobia . . .
Meanwhile, I’m waiting for feminists to blame these crimes on the patriarchy because, after all, both cases were heteronormative.
Dark sarcasm may be in poor taste, but it’s not illegal. Yet.

Hughes’s TNR Makeover Is The Obama Administration In Miniature
Posted on | December 6, 2014 | 60 Comments
by Smitty
Emphasis mine:
“Assuming Chris really does plan to dumb it down in the name of clicks, what’s maddening is the way he has betrayed the premise on which he bought it. It’s like buying a historic Victorian mansion with the promise of preserving it — and then carving it into condos two years later,” one former longtime TNR staffer told POLITICO.
“I hope Chris realizes how much intellectual firepower he’s losing here — and how hard it is to fake intellectual substance,” the former staffer said.
I just love it when these Progressives get all emotional about the destruction of institutions. Given that this has been their stock in trade since the Summer of Love, culminating in six years of #OccupyResoluteDesk making a total cock-up of the Presidency, one is left to wonder why the Lefties can’t just enjoy their liberation from “intellectual substance”. This is another suck-is-the-new-cool call from the manor house down to the the peasants working the fields. Dig it, lackeys.
Progressivism is not a creative movement. It is the combustion of traditional, positive, moral values in a propaganda machine for the production of political power. Once all of the moral values of the culture have been burned, Progress will generally collapse into the kind of thuggery most recently seen in Ferguson, MO.
