Virginia is for lovers of elections and political gymnastics. Since its 2009 inception, the Tea Party had run an insurgency to force conventions for state-wide elections, which resulted in (what I thought) was a dynamite slate for last November’s elections: Cuccinelli/Jackson/Obenshain. Alas, the GOP elite didn’t seem to care much about this off-year contest, as Her Majesty’s favorite, Greasy Terry, schmoozed in to take the governor’s mansion.

Of course, the first thing T-Mac wanted was some fat Medicaid cash to cement the bluing of the state. Virginia law precludes governors running for re-election. That’s a feature, though: all the “federal” dollars (how, exactly, they differ from traditional frogskins exceeds this blog’s knowledge) wouldn’t be running out until McAuliffe was artfully exiting.

The GOP still controls the Virginia House, though, and has been fighting a delaying action to preclude the fiscal calamity of expanding the Medicaaid rolls without, you know, the economic foundation to pay for it when the day of reckoning arrives. Raaaaacist arithmetic, and all.

Recently, the GOP regained control of the Virginia Senate through means that are greasy enough to make Terry McAuliffe take notice. The sudden, convenient resignation of a Democrat Virginia State Senator could derail the Medicaid expansion and force McAuliffe to deal with a record in office that isn’t an Obama-esque fiscal disaster.

Within that context comes the news that the U.S. House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor, got whacked.

A solid, double-digit delivery for Brat. But what’s it all about? Politico reports:

Cantor is the second House incumbent to lose this primary season — Texas GOP incumbent Ralph Hall was defeated by a tea-party backed challenger at the end of May.

There were warning signs that kept piling up. In April, Brat supporters vastly outnumbered Cantor allies at local GOP meetings. Then in May, tea party fueled activists knocked off Cantor’s choice for local GOP chair in Cantor’s home base of Henrico County. But Cantor’s aides consistently brushed off the challenge, telling reporters and fellow GOP aides that the contest didn’t merit the media coverage it was getting

Brat severely trailed in fundraising, pulling in $200,000 this cycle compared to Cantor’s $2 million.

The AP gets to the heart of it:

Much of the campaign centered on immigration, where critics on both sides of the debate have recently taken aim at Cantor. Brat has accused him of being a top cheerleader for “amnesty” for immigrants who are living in the U.S. illegally. Cantor has responded forcefully by boasting in mailers of blocking Senate plans “to give illegal aliens amnesty.”

And so the toppling of Cantor will lead to a gut check for the GOP: go all “scorched earth” and run amnesty through despite the base, or deal with the reality that those spiffy Progressive ideas have all the appeal of a dirty diaper outside the Beltway.

It would be great to say I’m confident that the latter will occur. The GOP will recognize the need for reform. The GOP will at least borrow some fortitude and ignore the Graham/McCain/Boehner Axis of Deadwood.

I don’t think that’s how this works. The Tea Party has to root out incumbents one at a time. The resources just don’t exist to start an entirely new party, much less blow away all the incumbent deadwood at once.

This will be a slow and steady effort. Congratulations to Brat, and a toast to avoiding becoming that which he despises.

Facts Are the New Hate

The #YesAllWomen hashtag has been going crazy all day because of a Washington Post column by Brad Wilcox and Robin Wilson which demonstrates — as a matter of social science — what all social scientists already know: Marriage is highly correlated with good outcomes for women and children. This isn’t really controversial, if you have paid attention to the research, but feminists don’t give a damn about research if the facts contradict their theories, and feminist theory has been implacably hostile to marriage for more than 40 years. Here are two charts from the Wilcox/Wilson article:

As you can see, (a) rates of domestic violence against women are highest for single mothers and (b) child abuse rates are lowest for children living with married biological parents.

The very worst environment for children, in terms of abuse, is to live with an unmarried parent and that parent’s live-in boyfriend or girlfriend. You’ll also notice, interestingly, that rates of domestic abuse are slightly higher for married women who have children, as opposed to childless married women; however, the rates are still far lower for married moms than for single mothers.

Of course, correlation is not causation, and all such social-science data require analysis and contextualization. However, the data clearly contradict the feminist dogma which blames “patriarchy” — i.e., the social norms of the traditional family — for abuse. But the influence of feminism in academia and in the media is now so powerful that when social scientists try to call attention to research that shows the traditional family in a favorable light, the denunciations are loud, emotional and deliberately vituperative:

‘The Child Within Me Is Truly Gone … I Hate You, But I Loved You’

Dance teacher Nichol Marie Phelps molested 15-year-old girl.

Readers may remember the case of Nichol Marie Phelps, the married 30-year-old dance teacher in Florida who said she would leave her husband for the “hot” 15-year-old student she molested in 2012. Phelps was sentenced to prison last week:

Though she’s only 17, the young dancer testified Friday that her childhood ended long ago.
“The child within me is truly gone and has been for a really long time,” the teen told her former dance instructor, Nichol Phelps. “With your selfish games, you stole someone’s childhood, their innocence.”

(“Innocence”? Isn’t that an oppressive patriarchal concept?)

The testimony came during a four-hour hearing Friday at the Orange County Courthouse, during which Circuit Judge Mike Murphy sentenced Phelps, of Cape Coral, to 8 1/2 years in prison, followed by sex-offender probation. . . .

(Eight-and-a-half years? Homophobia!)

Friday’s hearing featured emotional testimony from both families. Phelps’ husband and mother described her as a devout Christian and loving mom of two, whose children rely on her presence and care.
“I am so sorry,” Phelps told Murphy. “Please, think of my family.”
Phelps and her defense portrayed the teen as the aggressor. Phelps testified that the girl made advances which “should have been handled in a mature manner, and they were not.” . . .

(Uh, the 15-year-old was “the aggressor” who “made advances”? How many sex offenders in Florida prisons tried that excuse?)

“I hate you, but I loved you,” the teen told Phelps in her testimony. “That’s what I struggle with the most…. You hurt me.”
She added: “You will not take from me who I am today, because today I love myself… I am no longer a victim, I am a survivor.”

Kaitlyn Hunt could not be reached for comment.

Al-Qaeda on the Offensive in Iraq

This was entirely predictable:

Insurgents seized control early Tuesday of most of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, including the provincial government headquarters, offering a powerful demonstration of the mounting threat posed by extremists to Iraq’s teetering stability.
Fighters with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, overran the entire western bank of the city overnight after Iraqi soldiers and police apparently fled their posts, in some instances discarding their uniforms as they sought to escape the advance of the militants.
Iraq’s speaker of parliament, Osama Nujaifi, said the city that ranks as the capital of northern Iraq is now entirely in insurgent hands.

Lesbian Charged With Statutory Rape

A Tennessee woman has been charged with five counts of statutory rape for allegedly having sex with a teenage girl. Stephanie Kaye Stanton, 22, of Lawrenceburg is being held on $100,000 bond:

Lawrenceburg police Capt. Don Laws . . . said Stanton is accused of having an “unlawful sexual relationship” with a teenage girl.
Laws would not release the girl’s exact age, but said she was 12-16 years old.
Authorities said the investigation revealed the relationship had been going on since December 2012. . . .
“We received information that Stanton could be involved with a young girl, and we started the investigation and were able to develop enough to make the arrest,” Laws said. . . .
“We fear there may be several young female victims involved,” he said. “Our department is currently investigating allegations into other young female children.

Stanton was indicted in April on similar charges involving a teen girl in Madison County, Alabama — Huntsville, about an hour’s drive from Lawrenceburg — where her trial is scheduled to begin in September.

‘This Feminist Community That I’d Like to Consider Myself a Part Of’

The pathetic phrase quoted in the headline was spoken by Daniel Kopin in an interview with Cathy Young. Kopin, 21, is a Brown University student who was suspended after a school disciplinary proceeding in which he was found responsible for “sexual misconduct” with his ex-girlfriend and fellow Brown student Lena Sclove.

It’s an interesting story: Kopin and Sclove are both progressives, and had been friends for a while before they began a three-week sexual relationship that, according to Kopin’s account, ended when he decided they should go back to being just friends. But then there was one night — Aug. 2, 2013 — when “they began flirting at a party, engaged in physical displays of affection, and left the party to go to Kopin’s apartment with the intention of having sex.” What happened during that encounter is a classic “he said/she said” situation.

Here’s the problem: Because he is a nice guy, and because the alleged “sexual misconduct” was treated as a matter of school discipline — rather than investigated as a crime — Kopin did not exercise his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent. Instead, Kopin made the mistake of trying to tell his side of the story after Sclove sent him an accusatory e-mail on Aug. 8: “Dan, you raped me.”

Dude: Lawyer up and say nothing.

It’s unfortunate that nice young men should have to hear such advice, but this is what the current campus climate requires.

Nice young men are not street smart, and Kopin — a “mild-mannered young man with a self-effacing smile and a preppy manner” — was evidently so stunned by Sclove’s accusation that he didn’t think about his Fifth Amendment rights. The misguided effort of the accused date rapist to tell his side of the story is part of the whole cultural problem that has developed on campuses where what should be a matter of criminal law, in which the prosecution has the burden of proof, is instead handled by university officials in extra-judicial proceedings where the accused is required to “prove” his innocence.

Did I mention that Lena Sclove is crazy?

In her Aug. 8 e-mail which accused Kopin of raping her on Aug. 2, Sclove wrote: “I have seen my therapist twice, and she is 100 percent sure that this was rape.” Excuse me for pointing this out, but the phrase “my therapist” would seem to indicate that Sclove was under treatment for some kind of mental illness before the incident in question. If so, Sclove’s psychiatric history is relevant.

Dude: Don’t hook up with crazy women.

This is more advice nice young men need to hear, unfortunately. They’re not street smart, these mild-mannered preppy boys.

The Law of Large Numbers dictates that if you screw around enough, eventually you’ll encounter The Psycho Bitch From Hell.

Oh, she seems attractive enough. You don’t notice she’s crazy on that beer-soaked night when you’ve got no other prospects in sight. Or maybe you do realize she’s crazy, but you just don’t care.

What’s the worst that can happen, right? All you care about is, she’s down for some action, so you never really consider the potential consequences of hooking up with a psychiatric basket case.

Based on my own extensive research, conducted between 1977 and 1988, at least 6% of women are The Psycho Bitch From Hell. She is incapable of distinguishing between casual sex and a “relationship,” so that attempting to break up with her — or even not being interested in a follow-up to a one-night stand — inevitably turns into the kind of insane drama that inspired Fatal Attraction. When I see TV documentaries about women dealing with dangerous stalkers, I feel a profound empathy, because I know the basic problem: You meet someone who is crazy, but either you don’t recognize the warning signs or else you ignore the warning signs and next thing you know, you’re trapped in a situation of complete craziness from which there is no easy way out.

Have you ever gotten a phone call informing you that a girl you dated briefly is now holding a butcher knife to her throat, threatening suicide if you don’t come over to her house immediately?

Yeah. And I was only 17 years old at the time.

Some people can’t cope with rejection, and young people need to beware of this danger. A careful reading of Cathy Young’s account of the situation between Dan Kopin and Lena Sclove reveals numerous clues that Sclove was trouble waiting to happen long before Aug. 2, 2013. If Kopin didn’t recognize those clues, that’s his fault. He should have avoided a sexual relationship with Sclove, who apparently had a pre-existing emotional problem that has not been adequately explained.

What happened on Aug. 2, 2013? I don’t know.

Sclove says one thing, and Kopin says another thing. The key point is, accusations of sexual assault should always be a matter of criminal law in which the burden of proof is on the prosecution, and where the defendant is accorded all his rights under the Constitution, including his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent.

Instead, Brown University has allowed this to turn into a situation where a United States Senator — New York Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand — went on MSNBC and claimed that Scloven was “brutally raped” and “nearly choked to death” by Dan Kopin.

Obviously, I’m willing to believe that progressive pro-feminist men attending elite universities (Brown’s annual tuition is $46,408) are all brutal rapists who get their kinky thrills by choking women, but maybe Dan Kopin is an exception to the rule.

If any guy ever finds himself accused under similar circumstances, here’s some street-smart advice: Deny everything.

Never accidentally incriminate yourself by trying to tell your side of the story. If anyone asks for your response to a false accusation, your answer should be four simple words: “That bitch is crazy.”

The Politics of Blame

After five years of excuses, straw-man arguments and scapegoating, the Obama administration’s incompetence and irresponsibility have exhausted the patience of many Democrats, Ron Fournier reports:

The email hit my in-box at 9:41 p.m. last Wednesday.  From one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington, a close adviser to the White House, the missive amounted to an electronic eye roll. “Even I have had enough.”
Another Democrat had quit on President Obama.
The tipping point for this person was the Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl case—not the soldier-for-Taliban swap itself as much as how the White House mishandled its obligation to communicate effectively and honestly to Congress and the public. More than that, Obama’s team had failed once again to acknowledge its mistakes, preferring to cast blame and seek cover behind talking points.
“DC is hard, and depressing,” the Democrat wrote. “I still believe good comes from government (e.g. 8 million in ACA). But that Politico story is a cautionary one: good reminder that you can’t go so in the bunker [and] no longer identify legitimate criticism.” That day, Politico had posted a story channeling the White House communications team’s response to the Bergdahl backlash. . . .
