John McCain Was … Right?
Posted on | August 20, 2021 | Comments Off on John McCain Was … Right?
Everybody who knows me knows I was not a fan of the distant relative I called “Crazy Cousin John.” The whole point of naming this blog “The Other McCain” was to ensure nobody confused me with the Arizona senator, whose advocacy of amnesty for illegal aliens I abhorred.
So it was interesting to see my late kinsman “go viral” this week:
A recently resurfaced video showing late Senator John McCain warning colleagues of an “unqualified” and “dangerous” Antony Blinken, who served as deputy national security advisor under President Barack Obama at the time, specifically blasting Blinken’s desire to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
The nearly two-minute clip, which comprises excerpts from December 2014, depicts McCain approaching the Senate floor to oppose Blinken’s nomination as deputy secretary of state.
“Madam President, I rise to discuss my opposition to the pending vote concerning Mr. Anthony ‘Tony’ Blinken, who is not only unqualified, but, in fact, in my view, one of the worst selections of a very bad lot that this president has chosen,” McCain began.
“I hope that many of my colleagues will understand that not often do I come to the floor to oppose a nomination of the president of the United States because I believe that elections have consequences,” he continued.
McCain is also seen slamming Blinken, deeming the then-deputy national security advisor a danger to the United States.
“In this case, this individual has actually been dangerous to America and to the young men and women who are fighting and serving it,” he said.
McCain also noted Blinken’s role in “conceptualizing and furthering” a failed foreign policy.
“U.S. foreign policy is in shambles,” he said. “It’s at best a strategic, and at worst, anti-strategic.”
Quoting Blinken himself, McCain then described his concerns that the then-Obama official would push for a complete withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, leading to a “replay” of war-scarred Iraq:
“I’ll move on to Afghanistan. Mr. Blinken said, ‘We’ve been very clear, we’ve been consistent. The war will be concluded by the end of 2014. We have a timetable and that timetable will not change.’ This is why I’m so worried about him being in the position that he’s in because if they stick to that timetable, I am telling my colleagues that we will see the replay of Iraq all over again. We must leave a stabilizing force behind of a few thousand troops or we will see again what we saw in Iraq.”
Seven years after McCain’s opposition to Blinken’s nomination, the latter serves as Secretary of State, with many claiming the events from this week proved the necessity of McCain’s warning.
OK, so you may be among those conservatives who don’t like the idea of the U.S. playing global policeman, with our troops deployed hither and yon to prop up weak “allies,” but we’ve still got 36,000 troops in Germany, some 30 years after the end of the Cold War, and I don’t think it would have been too much to leave 3,000 or so in Afghanistan.
Keep in mind what Senator McCain was referencing in Iraq, namely that the U.S. pullout had given rise to ISIS which, in the wake of the 2011 “Arab Spring,” was setting up its caliphate in Syria. However much we may deplore the “imperialism” of the United States trying to impose its will in Mesopotamia and the Levant by force of arms, pragmatism is a better guide than ideological abstractions. The crazy zig-zagging of our foreign policy, from Clinton to Bush to Obama to Trump to Biden, must leave our allies dismayed and our enemies emboldened.

I was so impressed by this series that I actually paid for six months of Crunchyroll so I could see the whole thing. Well worth it.

Even With Friendly Media, ‘Sundown Joe’ Continues Embarrassing Himself
Posted on | August 19, 2021 | Comments Off on Even With Friendly Media, ‘Sundown Joe’ Continues Embarrassing Himself
Glenn Reynolds describes the media as “Democratic Party operatives with bylines,” and this is quite literally true in the case of George Stephanopoulos of ABC News, who worked for Mike Dukakis and Dick Gephardt before joining Team Clinton in the 1992 campaign. So when Joe Biden’s handlers needed a friendly venue for the alleged president’s first interview since the Kabul catastrophe, George got the call.
Stephanopoulos did his best to help the Alzheimer’s patient, as for example, giving Sundown Joe an opportunity to display his famous (or perhaps I should say, mythical) “compassion,” with this softball:
STEPHANOPOULOS: But we’ve all seen the pictures. We’ve seen those hundreds of people packed into a C-17. You’ve seen Afghans falling–
BIDEN: That was four days ago, five days ago.
STEPHANOPOULOS: What did you think when you first saw those pictures?
BIDEN: What I thought was we ha– we have to gain control of this. We have to move this more quickly. We have to move in a way in which we can take control of that airport. And we did.
Do you see how off-key that was? Stephanopoulos was trying to pitch an easy one at Joe, with the idea that he would react with expressions of sympathy. Bite your lip. Shake your head. Use the word “tragic” — any skilled politician knows how to respond appropriately. But instead, Biden lashed out and got the number of days wrong, too.
It “is spectacularly odd . . . that Biden is reacting as if he thinks Stephanopolous was bringing up irrelevant ancient history,” Jim Geraghty writes. “Why was Biden indignant that Stephanopolous was asking about those horrifying sights?” The emotion was inappropriate, as if Biden believed Stephanopoulos was deliberately unfair to him.
This kind of inappropriate anger is symptomatic of Alzheimer’s. Any clinician would recognize the symptoms, but you don’t need a medical degree to see that Joe’s mental function is declining rapidly. His handlers at the White House obviously know this, as Geraghty notes:
This is a highly unusual schedule for a president during a foreign-policy crisis. . . . Biden is barely appearing in public, not saying much of anything when he does, not answering any questions outside of his lone scheduled interview, and sounding angry when he did face questions from Stephanopoulos. . . .
The obvious answer to why Biden rarely appears on camera or takes questions is because every time he does it, he inflicts more damage upon himself and his agenda. The president whose empathy is endlessly touted now sounds cold and dismissive when asked about Afghans’ desperately crowding into American planes or falling to their deaths. All of the available evidence indicates that the president ignored the warnings of his foreign-policy team, withdrew the armed forces before evacuating the civilians, gave up Bagram Air Base, and now is in a large-scale foreign crisis that is mostly the result of his own choices. . . .
Something is wrong with President Biden, and we are all being asked to pretend we don’t notice.
(Hat-tip: Ed Driscoll at Instapundit.)
Charlie “Three Wives” Sykes is rightly embarrassed:
It’s. Not. Good. And I say this as someone who supported, touted, and embraced Biden’s candidacy. Because competence, normalcy, decency, empathy. . . .
Instead, we were reminded of some hard truths about the man some of us thought might restore the soul of the country: He is a vastly better man and president than Donald Trump, but he’s got a long, long record of getting foreign policy wrong.
Why did Sykes let hatred for Trump wreck his mind to the point that he could be so deluded as to view Joe Biden as a potential secular savior?
I could probably expend a couple thousand words on an attempt to explain the motivations of Sykes and the other #NeverTrump types, but to quote a former Secretary of State, what difference at this point does it make? Their fate is ironic, in that they wanted to be perceived as mature and serious, but ended up looking ridiculously childish.
Probably best to ignore them, to let them languish in irrelevant obscurity, as the unavoidable consequence of their own foolish choices.

Gaslighting Biden’s Afghanistan Disaster
Posted on | August 18, 2021 | Comments Off on Gaslighting Biden’s Afghanistan Disaster
It has been pointed out that Joe Biden’s 19-minute Monday speech about the Afghanistan debacle was a masterpiece of gaslighting, in which he engaged in a straw-man argument, as if the point of contention was whether or not U.S. troops would be withdrawn, rather than the incompetence that turned the withdrawal into a shameful humiliation, abandoning not only our allies in Afghanistan, but also thousands of American civilians who are now stranded in a country controlled by the Taliban. Trump adviser Stephen Miller said on Twitter:
Biden’s speech is one of the most dishonest straw man arguments in history. He debated reasons for exiting Afghanistan. Not many dispute we should end war. This is about the unimaginable, inconceivable incompetence of Biden’s exit plan & the global humiliation it has wrought.
I must also reiterate that Biden abandoned & rejected the Trump peace plan. Under Trump, there was zero chance our flag would not by flying right now over the American Embassy, our staff working safely inside.
Biden cannot escape his own malfeasance, ineptitude & incapacity.
Even many liberal voices in the media are dumbfounded by Biden’s big blunder, and angry about the dishonesty of his excuses and blame-shifting. A basic claim of the anti-Trump media — that Biden’s presidency would mean “the grown-ups” were back in charge, an end to what the elites viewed as the crude amateurism of Trump — has now collapsed. Biden alone is to blame for a catastrophe that the actual grown-ups in his administration sought to prevent. Biden’s decision “was made against the recommendations of his top military generals and many diplomats”:
The president’s top generals, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Mark Milley, urged Mr. Biden to keep a force of about 2,500 troops, the size he inherited, while seeking a peace agreement between warring Afghan factions, to help maintain stability. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who previously served as a military commander in the region, said a full withdrawal wouldn’t provide any insurance against instability.
In a series of meetings leading up to his decision, military and intelligence officials told Mr. Biden that security was deteriorating in Afghanistan, and they expressed concerns both about the capabilities of the Afghan military and the Taliban’s ability to take over major Afghan cities.
Other advisers, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and national security adviser Jake Sullivan, raised the possibility of Taliban attacks on U.S. forces and diplomats as well as the Afghans who for two decades worked alongside them.
So it wasn’t as if this catastrophe was not predicted, or that it could not have been prevented. Biden was warned, but did it anyway. And by the way, here’s a quote from 2002:
“History is going to judge us very harshly, I believe,
if we allow the hope of a liberated Afghanistan
to evaporate because we are fearful of the phrase,
‘nation-building,’ or we do not stay the course.”
Who said that? A senator named Joe Biden.
In case anyone is wondering how what is happening in Afghanistan is possible… in May of this year, @SecDef Lloyd Austin identified climate change as the #1 issue facing the military. #2 was countering violent extremists in the military. #3 was team work with allies and agencies.

Where Is Biden? UPDATED: The Big Lie of ‘Fighting Indefinitely’ in Afghanistan
Posted on | August 16, 2021 | Comments Off on Where Is Biden? UPDATED: The Big Lie of ‘Fighting Indefinitely’ in Afghanistan
Probably snorting coke off a Chinese hooker’s tits.
Oh, wait . . . You meant Joe Biden?
Well, our alleged President is preparing to deliver a nationally televised speech in which he will, predictably, blame everyone else but himself for the dreadful mess he’s made of Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the media are spinning so hard they’re liable to go whirling off into orbit any moment now. NBC White House correspondent Monica Alba, acting as propagandist for the Biden regime, complained that “Republicans have seized on” the visual comparison between the situation in Kabul in 2021 and Saigon in 1975. Yes, I missed the memo from GOP headquarters and was left wondering whether to “seize” or “pounce” on this comparison. Last week, we were all pouncing, but now we’re back to seizing again.
Leading from behind, Joe Biden caves to pressure after unsuccessfully trying to ride out a firestorm of criticism for his administration's silence after it botched the evacuation of Kabul. https://t.co/FFMQqOdpRY
— Spencer Brown (@itsSpencerBrown) August 16, 2021
UPDATED: Biden’s speech was a masterpiece of mendacity. The heart of it was a deliberate misrepresentation of the situation:
In his remarks, Biden insisted the rapid collapse of the country only reinforced his belief that bringing troops home was the right thing to do.
‘American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves,’ he said.
Biden also pointed a finger at former President Donald Trump’s agreement with the Taliban to pull out American troops by May 1, 2021.
‘So I’m left again to ask of those who argue that we should stay: How many more generations of America’s daughters and sons would you have me send to fight Afghanistan’s civil war, when Afghan troops will not?’ Biden said.
‘How many more lives, American lives is it worth? How many endless rows of head stones at Arlington National Cemetery?’
‘I’m clear in my answer: I will not repeat the mistakes we’ve made in the past. The mistake of staying and fighting indefinitely in a conflict that is not in the national interest of the United States,’ he continued.
‘Of doubling down on a civil war in a foreign country. Of attempting to remake a country through the endless military deployments of U.S. forces,’ the president added.
This was not the issue, because our troops were not — repeat, were not — “fighting in a war and dying in a war” when Biden took office. There was no prospect of “endless rows of head stones” from casualties in Afghanistan, and no matter how many times Biden repeats this idea, it is and always was a false dilemma. U.S. combat casualties in Afghanistan since 2017 had been minimal — you can look it up. Even in the worst year in Afghanistan, our total KIA (killed in action) was less than the number of people shot to death in Chicago so far this year. In the four years 2017-2020, the total number of U.S. fatalities in Afghanistan (including accidents, etc.) was 63 — an average of about 16 a year. So this insistence from Biden that the U.S. forces in Afghanistan were “fighting indefinitely” in a civil war that was producing “endless rows” of casualties is simply false — unless you consider the current situation in Chicago an “endless deployment” from which we must hastily evacuate our forces.
