In an article about the Tea Party movement, the Los Angeles Times re-writes the history of Doug Hoffman’s campaign last year in New York’s 23rd District:
Many Republican Party leaders have welcomed [Tea Party involvement in local GOP organizations], particularly because they worried that the energy driving the tea party movement might create a third party that would split the conservative vote.
That scenario played out in New York’s 23rd Congressional District in a special election last year, a cautionary tale in Republican circles because it led to a Democrat capturing a longtime GOP House seat. . . .
Having spent so long covering that campaign, this blame-the-conservatives revisionism angered me, and I responded in the Hot Air Green Room:
From start to finish of the NY23 campaign, then, the Republican Party was exclusively responsible for electing the Democrat.
Any attempt to foist blame for the Democratic victory in NY23 onto Hoffman and his supporters is a willful perversion of the actual history of that campaign. . . .

Why else would such an august man be going to Schloss Braunschlag, dressed like a head of state, alone, without the usual retinue?
The meeting had gone on past the usual time when a break for biological necessities would have occurred. Yet the speaker droned on. While the honor of being invited to Davos for the World Economic Forum was great, and the honor of being invited to the castle for this private meeting was greater still, the attendees were not just anyone.
There was one present who was known to be among the world’s richest men; older, of northern European extraction, thinning hair in a silly combover, atrociously bad taste in eyewear, he could be anyone’s uncle.
Actually, as these things went, he was among the poorer in the room. The really rich can buy that luxury usually afforded the Amish: anoynymity. The speaker droned on about the coming global government.
“Commit the evil in the name of precluding that evil: there are bonus points for sweet-and-sour hypocrisy.
After schooling the people in governmental dependency, where shall they turn in the crisis that we shall foment? Why, the government we appoint!
The principal object of our directorate consists in this: to debilitate the public mind by criticism; to lead it away from serious reflections calculated to arouse resistance; to distract the forces of the mind towards a sham fight of empty eloquence.
Thus, our tentacles are deployed to the smallest blog, free-thinking group, and, in the US case, Tea Party.

There was massive enthusiasm, about “The Green Zamboni – a Canadian icon fights climate change” just a couple of months ago. Zambonis at the men’s speedskating event at the Vancouver Winter Olympics were to be a vast improvement.
Past all of the granola-head posturing, they were trying something new, as this blog did on 01Jan10. And like most new projects, they’re finding out that being shiny, in and of itself, doesn’t always git ‘er done: “Speed skating ice woes threaten green sheen”.
Possibly the “change for its own sake” crowd has tampered with what works, broken it, and merits the hoisting on their own petard. Or, completely unrelated factors have triggered this. Hopefully not something nefarious.
After this call for calm, if it proves that green, “faith based technology” is at fault, then, flog the weenies about the head and shoulders, say I.

Patrick at Political Byline on the narrative shaping surrounding the University of Alabama tragedy. Specifically, he took umbrage with the Boston Herald for this quote: “‘She was an oddball – just not very sociable,’ said Sylvia Fluckiger, a former lab technician who worked with Bishop in 1993.”
What bothers me is this; there is a narrative being played up here. That this woman was an ‘Oddball’. As someone who has been labeled an ‘Oddball’ in my lifetime. I find this to be very disconcerting. Yes, I have my quirks; I like to think of myself as a bit eccentric, but I am not a murderer. What this woman did was a act of a deranged killer and not just some overly educated ‘oddball’ eccentric. There is a difference, and I wish that the media would please point out that difference.
First it was people that were loners, and very quiet and kept to themselves. Now, they are going with the ‘Oddball’ characterization. Why is it that the police and other said authorities just cannot be content with just explaining that the woman was a cold-blooded killer and stop the personality characterizations? It is quite disgusting and it is totally unfair to those of us, who might to possess those qualities and may just be normal average people, who are not looking to inflict any sort of harm on anyone.
American Power‘s question, “Why Was She Still Teaching?” which points back to the Ivory Tower, might be more helpful.
The bulk of people have occasions when their behavior is oddball, even for reasons as simple as exhaustion or a bad meal.

It’s not often that you read Victor Davis Hanson and find yourself thinking of a Paco Enterprises foray in farce.
Yet, VDH’s essay on the bumblings of Bidenism does exactly that: put one in mind of Paco’s delightfully silly sendup of the Norwegians tryin’ ta reclay-em they-er medal.
If only Biden’s single-heartbeat proximity to the Presidency were as innocuous as Paco’s whimsy.
