They’re Calling It the ‘Kamala Crash’

Stocks tanked today, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) falling more than a thousand points (down 2.6%) while both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ recorded their worst days since September 2022. There is no reason to panic over this one-day loss, of course, since the long-term trend is still upward, no matter the short-term hit to your 401(k) account.

It’s being called the “Kamala crash” because one of the things that may have triggered the sell-off was that investors believe there is an increased likelihood of Kamala Harris becoming the next president. To help explain what’s going on here, look at these charts:

On June 27, the DJIA closed at 39,164.06. That evening, however, Joe Biden suffered a catastrophic debate performance and within a few days, the markets started surging. About two weeks later, it broke 40,000 for the first time in history, and on July 17 reached a peak of 41,198.08, having gained 2,034.02 points (+5.2%) in three weeks.

Of course, many things can affect the stock markets, but it’s hard to avoid the obvious interpretation here: As the polls began showing Joe Biden losing ground in the election, confidence rose as investors believed that Trump was likely to be the next president, bringing a pro-business policy agenda back to the White House. In the 10 days after Biden announced he would quit his reelection bid, the Dow dipped, then climbed again, but the media was busy cranking out a lot of pro-Kamala hype, and doubts began to shadow the market. By last week, Democrats had circled the wagons and organized a “virtual roll call” to officially anoint Harris as their nominee, and the bottom has now fallen out of the market, with the DJIA losing a total of 2,494.81 points (-6.1%) since its July 17 peak.

The damage wasn’t confined to Wall Street. Trading volumes surged across crypto casinos and digital asset exchanges while Treasury yields dropped as investors scrambled for safety. All of it pointed in one direction: the market was repricing the election.

Maybe the stock markets are right. Maybe the chances of Kamala Harris getting elected have increased in the past two weeks. On the other hand, she’s never been really popular with voters, her 2020 campaign was a flop, and I see no reason to believe that she’s learned anything from that experience. Harris is a bad candidate, and once this “honeymoon” phase is over, I expect America to reject her. We can then look forward to a new economic boom beginning on Wednesday, November 6.

Donald Trump Had an Agreement to Debate Joe Biden, Not to Debate ‘Whoever Democrats Pick to Replace Joe Biden’

Hey, remember when it was a “right-wing conspiracy theory” if you thought Democrats were going to pull a Torricelli-Lautenberg switch and run some other presidential candidate instead of Joe Biden?

Republicans float a quiet conspiracy theory
that Biden won’t be on the ballot

— NBC News, Oct. 26, 2023

Get Used to It: Biden Isn’t Going Anywhere
— Politico, Feb. 13, 2024

It’s time to end the conspiracy theories
about Biden being replaced as a candidate

— Washington Examiner, May 16, 2024

It’s important not to forget this recent history, which is being memory-holed by the same media voices who told you that you were crazy for thinking Democrats would do what, in fact, they have now done.

And why did Democrats dump Biden? Because the befuddled incumbent got his ass kicked in an early debate that Team Biden demanded. Remember that ridiculous “make my day” video from Joe?

So what happened? Many people were surprised when Trump immediately accepted the debates (first on CNN, then on ABC) with rules dictated by Team Biden. Lots of us right-wingers thought this was a bad idea. CNN was blatantly in the tank for Biden, but Trump didn’t seem to care. With the benefit of hindsight, we now see that Trump was smarter than all of us — he knew Biden couldn’t handle a debate, no matter how in-the-tank the moderators might be. (To be more anti-Trump than Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, you’d have to be Thomas Crooks).

Biden’s cognitively impaired performance in the June 27 debate proved to be a fatal wound to his reelection campaign, and Joe announced he was quitting 24 days later, designating Kamala Harris as his chosen replacement. This was ratified by a “virtual roll call” of DNC delegates — because thus does Our Democracy™ proceed — and Team Biden was thereby magically transformed into Team Harris. Despite the utterly unprecedented nature of this process, Team Harris seemed to assume that Trump was obligated to debate Harris under the same agreement he’d made when Biden was the candidate. Why? How is it that Democrats think they can pull such shenanigans and never experience any negative consequences as a result? Now Trump is playing hardball.

Trump offers to debate Sept. 4 on Fox in front of a live audience in Pennsylvania, and Team Harris perversely claims Trump is breaching his prior agreement with ABC when, in fact, it is Democrats who have rendered that agreement void by switching candidates.

And you know something? Harris needs the debate more than Trump does. He is a known commodity, with a solid grassroots base, so why should he do her any favors? It was one thing, when Biden was an incumbent seeking reelection, and Trump needed to counter the weight of the “bully pulpit.” But Kamala Harris? What has she got?

Recall that Trump did not deign to debate the Republican rivals who challenged him for the nomination. He let them debate amongst themselves, then beat them all in the primaries, without much effort. It may seem crazy to think that Trump has made a similar calculation about Harris, but his previous hunch proved accurate, didn’t it?

So, Trump decides that having no debate at all would be better than debating on ABC, and makes a take-it-or-leave-it offer for the Fox debate. And what if Team Harris says “no”? Fine with me, says Trump, and then turns all her complaints into an opportunity to talk about the shenanigans by which Democrats switched candidates.

“It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off.”

‘Return America to a Dark Past’

1959 Chevrolet advertisement

One of the things every liberal must believe is Progress, a quasi-religious faith which G.K. Chesterton mocked as “people who prefer Thursday to Wednesday because it is Thursday.” The apostles of Progress would have us believe that 1959 — the year I was born — was a nightmare dystopia, despite those snazy new Chevy station wagons, and that if Donald Trump gets elected in November, we are all going back to 1959.

That was the message Kamala Harris shared in a speech to the American Federation of Teachers this past week:

THE VICE PRESIDENT: So, Project 2025 is a plan to return America to a dark past. Donald Trump and his extreme allies want to take our nation back to failed trickle-down economic policies —
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: — back to union busting —
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: — back to tax breaks for billionaires.
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: Donald Trump and his allies want to cut Medicare and Social Security —
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: — to stop student loan forgiveness for teachers and other public servants.
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: And I say to AFT: They even want to eliminate the Department of Education —
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: — and end Head Start —
AUDIENCE: Booo —
THE VICE PRESIDENT: — which, of course, would take away preschool from hundreds of thousands of our children. He intends to give tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations and make working families foot the bill. And he intends to end the Affordable Care Act. Now, think about that — to take us back to a time when insurance companies had the power to deny people with preexisting conditions. Remember what that was like?

Yes, ma’am, I remember those dark days before the “Affordable Care Act,” before — [ checks calendar ] — March 23, 2010.

“Grandpa, what was it like to live in ‘a time when insurance companies had the power to deny people with preexisting conditions’?”

Well, sonny, lemme tell you, it was plenty rough. Back in those days, people had to pay their own bills, so they worked what were called “full-time jobs,” instead of hustling as DoorDash drivers or peddling naked selfies on OnlyFans. Yes, I remember when gas was less than $3 a gallon and interest on the national debt was less than a trillion dollars a year . . .

Perhaps you see my point:

Eleven days ago (see “The Paranoid Temptation,” July 16), I pondered what we were being told about the then-recent assassination attempt against Trump:

So the son of two mental health professionals gets his hands on an AR-15, climbs onto a roof 130 yards from the Republican presidential nominee, and comes within a fraction of an inch of splattering Trump’s brains all over the place. Nothing suspicious at all about that.
Have you considered the possibility that you’re not paranoid enough?

Many more strange events have since transpired. On July 17, President Joe Biden canceled his schedule in Las Vegas and flew back to Delaware, after it was reported he had tested positive for COVID-19, a virus most Americans have forgotten about. So, the Republican challenger survives an assassination attempt on Sunday (July 13), and four days later, the incumbent Democrat has a sudden health crisis. Nothing suspicious at all. Random coincidence — a flock of black swans, as it were. . . .

That’s from my latest Substack column, and I hope everybody signs up for a free email subscription. You can also pay for a subscription ($5 a month, $30 a year) which might come in handy when I finally get around to creating content behind a paywall, which I haven’t done yet.

What’s the Substack policy on naked selfies? Never mind. I’m sure nobody would pay for that . . .

Living in Interesting Times

Early this morning, I found myself researching the British industrialist and politician Joseph Chamberlain, whose son Neville became the Prime Minister ruined by appeasement. It was apparently from Joseph Chamberlain that his other son, Austen (Nevill[e’s half-brother) derived the idea of “may you live in interesting times” as being, as is often said, an ancient Chinese curse. Whatever the origins of the phrase may be, certainly we are now living in interesting times, although as Sarah Hoyt notes, bizarre and weird are suitable synonyms for “interesting.”

Wednesday night, our alleged president gave a prime time televised speech from the White House in which, amid much slurring and stumbling, he avowed his devotion to “the sacred cause of this country . . . the cause of American democracy itself.” Was this a tautology or a non sequitur? Forget it, Biden was rolling:

The cause of American democracy itself. We must unite to protect it.
In recent weeks, it has become clear to me that I need to unite my party in this critical endeavor. I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future, all merited a second term. But nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition.
So I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. It’s the best way to unite our nation. I know there was a time and a place for long years of experience in public life. There’s also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices, yes, younger voices. And that time and place is now.

What do you notice about that? First, that it’s an outright lie — Joe did not “decide to pass the torch.” That decision was imposed on him by the big-money donors and Democratic Party power brokers who, after his June 27 debate debacle, spent three weeks organizing a pressure campaign to boot Biden off the ticket. Second, at no point during this speech did Biden actually explain why this decision was made:

So, Biden has to drop out because his record is so good? His record is so good that the only way to unite everyone is for him to drop out.
The most popular, noble, and spectacular president ever just has to pass the torch to a new generation.
Um, what? That makes no sense. That does not explain why he had to drop out. .

Go through the whole transcript of the speech and see if you can find anything other than this vague “sacred cause of democracy itself” stuff as a justification for Biden’s withdrawal from the campaign. But giving the American people an honest explanation wasn’t really what this speech was about. It was actually a 10-minute campaign speech, and the TV time allotted to it ought to be counted as an in-kind contribution from the networks, none of which offered anything other than undiluted praise for the speech. The premise — that “American democracy itself” is at stake — is never questioned by the TV talking heads, all of whom apparently share Biden’s belief that “American democracy” will abruptly end the next time Republicans win an election. As for the “new generation” to whom Biden has “decided to pass the torch,” that would be 59-year-old Kamala Harris.

Since Biden ended his reelection bid on Sunday, as Matt Vespa says, there has been “a gaslighting operation, unlike anything we’ve seen, where the establishment media is re-writing history,” including the attempt to deny that Harris was ever appointed as Biden’s “border czar.” In fact, Harris “was tapped by President Biden to handle the migrant crisis” in March 2021 and while “border czar” was not her official title, it was widely used in media reports at the time.

It is truly Orwellian, the revisionism that the media are now doing in their effort to sell Kamala to a resistant electorate. By the way, MSNBC and CNN will tell you that it’s sexist and/or racist to refer to Kamala by her first name, even though such familiarity is commonplace — Bill, Joe, Bernie, Dubya, etc. — in political discussion. Furthermore, you will be told by the media, the way you pronounce her name may be racist, if you say “ku-MAH-luh” instead of the preferred “KAH-muh-luh.”

Be patient, my friends. After Nov. 5, you can just call her loser.

The Coronation of Queen Kamala: Why Are You Peasants Such Racist Sexists?

While I usually watch CNN (so you don’t have to), the past couple of days I’ve tuned into MSNBC to see what the real Kool-Aid drinkers are saying, and oh, boy, let me tell you it’s exciting!

New York Times journalist and “Morning Joe” panelist Mara Gay added that the Republicans “first instinct is just to be racist and sexist. I guess that’s, like, a tick that they’ve developed at this point.”
“What they’re actually doing is they are motivating every Democratic voter, every fence sitter, every independent voter, and people who are just disgusted with racism and sexism and want a multi-racial democracy to continue to the polls,” Gay continued.
Gay added that calling for Harris to be more grateful for this country is a “dog whistle, calling her uppity,” and “every Black voter in America knows that.”
“This is really not helping his case, but I guess that’s just their go-to line. When all else fails, just try racism,” Gay said.

It’s difficult for me to describe what’s on MSNBC except to say that there is zero skepticism being expressed toward the idea that Kamala Harris is eminently qualified — nay, perhaps uniquely qualified — to be President of the United States. It’s wall-to-wall enthusiasm and exuberant confidence. Recalling the lyrics of the old cowboy ballad “Home on the Range,” MSNBC is a place where, for Democrats, never is heard a discouraging word, and the skies are not cloudy all day.

Donny Deutsch is lovestruck for His Queen:

MSNBC commentator Donny Deutsch said Monday on “Deadline” after Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to campaign staff he was falling in love with her.
Deutsch said, “Wow. You know, there was a twinkle in her eye, there was a kick in her step that, you know, when you’re vice president, you know, you’re not loose. you can’t , there’s somebody above you, somebody you don’t want to overshadow them. So this was quite the coming out. I got chills when she said Donald Trump, I know your type. That was like, wow, she’s going to prosecute this case. And you know, this is going to, she only mentioned the abortion issue once, that wasn’t a big part of the speech, but this is going to be.”
He added, “I said this on the show before women are going to save this country. We have a choice between an assault on women, assault on their bodies and their freedoms and the first female president. And I think women are going to drive the ship. And i was blown away. I was like I kind of fell in love with her. I thought she was smart, engaging. She’s funny, feisty, twinkle in your eye, punch you in the gut. I mean, everything you kind of want. I just thought it was a great, great opening act.”

“There were bells on a hill, but I never heard them ringing. No, I never heard them at all, ’til there was you.” Suffice it to say that it will be difficult for much of the public to form an accurate opinion of Her Highness so long as this media tongue-bath continues, and Republicans should not be surprised that, at this point, polls show Harris doing better against Trump than Biden was doing before the coup d’etat.

Do not sweat it, my friends. History shows that Kamala’s popularity tends to wane as her exposure increases. The more attention people pay to her, the less they like her. After the first Democratic primary debate in 2019, Kamala was the New “It” Girl, surging to second place (at 17%) in the CNN poll, behind Biden (at 22%), and ahead of Elizabeth Warren (15%) and Bernie Sanders (14%). But then came the second debate, where Harris got carved up by Tulsi Gabbard, and the bottom fell out. The next CNN poll had her at just 5%, in a tie for fourth place with Pete Buttigieg. She quit the race barely three months later, before a single primary vote was cast. To know her is to hate her: “Kamala Harris’ office has had a staggering 91.5 percent turnover rate since she became vice president.”

So, right now, while Kamala is getting her media honeymoon, being bombarded with love notes from her admirers, everything is “music and wonderful roses . . . in sweet fragrant meadows” on MSNBC.

Don’t expect this to last. Be patient, my racist sexist friends.

BOOM! Trump Campaign Hits Harris Immediately: ‘Kamala Was In On It’

While today’s announcement caught me by surprise, obviously Team Trump was prepared in advance for this contingency:

The Democratic party baton has not officially passed from Joe Biden to Kamala Harris, but already, the vice president is facing Republican attacks befitting a presidential front-runner.
Only moments after Biden announced he would not be seeking reelection on Sunday, upending the 2024 race, GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump and his allies unleashed an offensive against Harris, seeking to tie her to Biden’s record on immigration and criticizing her views as too liberal.
“Kamala was in on it. She covered up Joe’s obvious mental decline,” said a narrator in an ad released Sunday by a Trump-supporting super PAC. “Kamala knew Joe couldn’t do the job, so she did it. Look what she got done: a border invasion, runaway inflation, the American Dream dead.” . . .
Republicans on Capitol Hill, meanwhile, said Biden can’t carry out his duties and called on him to resign from office immediately, a step that, ironically, would make Harris president.
They also sought to turn the tables on the Democrats by arguing that by pushing Biden to step aside, Democratic lawmakers rejected the will of the voters who cast their ballots to make Biden the nominee earlier this year.
“Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said in a statement Sunday.
“The party’s prospects are no better now with Vice President Kamala Harris, who co-owns the disastrous policy failures of the Biden Administration,” he added.
Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), meanwhile, pointed to Harris’ statements in the past defending Biden from questions surrounding his age as a reason not to trust her candidacy.
“For four years, those closest to Joe Biden, including Kamala Harris, knew he was not fit to be president and lied to the American people in an effort to hold onto their power,” Scott said in a statement. “It was painfully clear that Biden wasn’t competent for office going way back to 2021.”

BIDEN DROPS REELECTION BID; THROWS SUPPORT TO VP HARRIS

The elderly dementia patient is withdrawing his candidacy for a second term, but will remain in office as president:

President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he will end his presidential re-election campaign, bringing an abrupt and humbling conclusion to his half-century-long political career and scrambling the race for the White House just four months before Election Day.
Biden, 81, could not reverse growing sentiment within his party that he was too frail to serve and destined to lose to Donald Trump in November. He backed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as the Democratic nominee.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted on X. “I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.”
Biden thanked Harris for “being an extraordinary partner” in his letter and then endorsed her in a subsequent post.
“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President,” Biden posted. “And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.”

A friend texted me: “81 million votes down the drain.”

UPDATE 2:55 p.m. ET: Yeah, they’re saving Our Democracy:

UPDATE 3 p.m. ET: LOL!

UPDATE 3:05 p.m. ET: Making the obvious point:

For the past four years, Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) conspired to conceal from the American people the fact that Joe Biden is too feeble-minded to exercise the office of president. That charade was exposed by the June 27 debate. Yet now, forced to admit the obvious, Biden is still hanging on for the next five months?

UPDATE 3:15 p.m.: Bonchie at Red State remarks:

Biden has now officially endorsed his vice president to become the Democratic Party presidential nominee. That’s bad news for Democrat operatives who were hoping to bypass her for someone more electable by holding a “mini-primary.”
Does this mean Harris is automatically the nominee? The answer is no, but what this does is paint Democrats into a corner. With Biden having stepped aside, he’s already done them a massive favor. For there to be any movement against Harris at this point would cause a huge rift within the Democratic Party. Yes, she’s deeply unpopular and losing to Trump according to the current polling, but she’s the vice president and she checks way too many intersectional boxes to be pushed aside.
In short, this could get really ugly going forward. Either Harris is coronated and there’s some semblance of unity within the party or others step up to challenge her and you’ve got chaos. The Democratic Party is a fractured mess of different factions, and African Americans are one of the most powerful within it. To slight them would be a disaster.
Regardless, no American voter should forget who lied to them. If the nominee does end up being Kamala Harris, she knew about Biden’s condition. She was in the administration that covered it up and trashed anyone who dared question the official narrative. She is culpable, and the fact that she misled voters is a genuine scandal. This fight is just beginning.

(Hat-tip: Ms. EBL.)

UPDATE 3:25 p.m.: The Speaker of the House, Rep. Mike Johnson:

At this unprecedented juncture in American history, we must be clear about what just happened. The Democrat Party forced the Democrat nominee off the ballot, just over 100 days before the election.
Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite.
The party’s prospects are no better now with Vice President Kamala Harris, who co-owns the disastrous policy failures of the Biden Administration. As second in command and a completely inept border czar, Harris has been a gleeful accomplice — not only in the destruction of American sovereignty, security, and prosperity, but also in the largest political coverup in U.S. history. She has known for as long as anyone of his incapacity to serve.
Regardless of the chaos in the current White House, our adversaries around the globe should be reminded that the U.S. Congress, the U.S. military, and the American people are fully prepared and committed to defend our interests both at home and abroad.
If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.

Boston Serial Rapist Faces Life in Prison; His Sister Endorsed Kamala Harris

His sister is a local Democrat politician:

A 39-year-old Cumberland, Rhode Island, man who has been accused of posing as a rideshare driver in order to target women at Boston bars has been indicted on charges including rape and kidnapping, officials said Wednesday.
Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins has called the suspect, Alvin Campbell, a serial rapist. Campbell was indicted Tuesday on two counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated rape, five counts of rape, two counts of indecent assault and battery, one count of assault with intent to rape and eight counts of filming an unsuspecting person in the nude. The indictment moves Campbell’s case to Suffolk Superior Court.
The charges reflect assaults against seven women between 2017 and 2019. Campbell was previously indicted in March for an attack on an eighth woman that occurred in 2019, Rollins’ office said in a statement.
Campbell will be arraigned on the indictments at a later date. Additionally, Campbell is charged as a habitual offender based on prior convictions for violent acts and firearm offenses, the statement said. The habitual offender indictment opens Campbell to the potential of life in prison if found guilty.
Campbell posed as a rideshare driver in connection with six of the indicted offenses, the district attorney’s office said, trying to target women near bars. In two incidents, the victims believed Campbell was a bouncer.
Most of the assaults happened in Campbell’s vehicle, Rollins’ office said. Campbell is accused of assaulting two women at their apartment after driving them to the residence.
“He is charged with filming each of the victims, who were unconscious, in a state of undress,” the statement said. “In five of the assaults, he allegedly filmed the victims as he raped them.”
Campbell is the brother of Boston City Councilor Andrea Campbell.
Rollins’ office previously said that Campbell last worked for Uber in 2016. When his vehicle was seized in the first case, “it was festooned with Uber stickers and logos.”

Andrea Campbell’s father went to prison, her twin brother died in jail, and now her other brother is facing a life sentence for serial rape. Andrea Campbell, who has “long been a champion of law enforcement reform and accountability,” last year endorsed Kamala Harris for president.
