Was Harry Reid Wrong?

This “light-skinned . . . no Negro dialect” controversy raged while I was on the road yesterday. Somebody told me it about Reid’s remark while I was at a Tea Party event in Altadena, Calif., from which I went straight to the airport for the long flight home. Excuse me, therefore, for being late to the Reid roast.

Of course, conservatives are generally denouncing the hypocrisy and double-standards involved here, asking, “What if a Republican had said what Harry Reid said?” Fair enough. On the other hand, Ruth Marcus of The Washington Post has a point:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid acted like an idiot.
Also, he was right.
It’s a measure of the suffocating culture of political correctness that it feels risky to say that. It’s a measure of the insulting how-dumb-do-they-think-we-are culture of incessant partisanship that Republicans leapt on Reid’s remarks as racist.

A good start, except that Marcus goes on to say:

For anyone in public life to use the word “Negro” in 2008 is beyond stupid. What was once polite has become demeaning.

Really? Merely to use “negro” is demeaning? OK, so what about “colored,” as in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People?

You can’t oppose political correctness while simultaneously enforcing political correctness Continue reading Was Harry Reid Wrong? →

Rule 5 Sunday

by Smitty

So I’ve been slow in starting this post, and may run out of energy before the Rule 5 folder is fully exhausted. That may lead to a major update tomorrow afternoon/evening. Request you check back later.

Your indulgence is sought.

Jill: No Compassion

by Smitty

Jill Brooke at PuffHo asks: “Where Is the Compassion for Men Who Get Saddled With Kids They Didn’t Want?”

Wikipedia elaborates on this idea of compassion:

Compassion is a human emotion prompted by the pain of others. More vigorous than empathy, the feeling commonly gives rise to an active desire to alleviate another’s suffering. It is often, though not inevitably, the key component in what manifests in the social context as altruism. In ethical terms, the various expressions down the ages of the so-called Golden Rule embody by implication the principle of compassion: Do to others what you would have them do to you.

Call me weird, but, if I’ve been an idiot, I want to feel some negative feedback:

Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. Prov 9:8

Jill Brooke, full of the Socialist Peter Pan Syndrome, enjoys that dreaming cluelessness about life to the fullest:

It’s got to hurt when you’re pregnant and your boyfriend breaks up with you and months later marries someone else. In their private moments, both actress Bridget Moynahan and venture capitalist Claire Milonas can’t even say their guy was commitment phobic. But you can say that maybe these women were a bit selfish in having a child knowing that the father would not be present.

It should hurt. If an overgrown boy is spraying his seed about like a dog in an alley, and a woman has so little self-esteem as to reward that boy sexually, then, yes: there may be some emotional side effects. Moynahan and Milonas and ever other wench deserves to be stigmatized as such. And these overgrown boys, if anything, moreso.

Jill’s article dribbles on predictably, with a lackluster attempt at reclama on marriage:

Marriage is still the connective glue that keeps society together. Children benefit from its structure. Even divorced children take comfort in knowing that their parents were once married.

Marriage is a spiritual gift from the Almighty. Before the children benefit from it, the parents benefit from the genuine commitment involved.  Does Jill grasp that the “connective glue” of marriage not only keeps society together, but that the divorce has a continual corrosive effect on everyone involved?

The interesting question to float is whether a Jill Brooke is just a simpleton, spouting existential falsehood from sheer ignorance, or if she’s more diabolical in her outlook.  The inability to enforce justice in relationships, to treat sexuality as a wonderful gift in its proper context, and to stigmatize wrong behavior in men and women, is as bad as the inability to enforce justice in the legal system.

Jill, you are a source of problems, not improvements.  Those children are blessings from the Almighty on loan, and are to be treated as such.

Michael Steele Must Go

by Smitty

It’s as much my place to have an opinion about Michael Steele as it is to have one about the Pope. I’m neither a GOP member nor a Roman Catholic. That said, I had been ambivalent about Steele’s performance as RNC chairman. Game changer? Tool? Who can say?

Then I saw this picture. He’s got to go.

We Need a Word

by Smitty

We need a word for that special sort of inspiration found when a blog that had seemingly fallen off the radar comes back with a pitch-perfect, palate cleansing blast of righteousness (potty mouth tidied):

Did I tell you guys I had to switch jobs again? Yeah, the powers that be decided my career would be benefited more if I became a Section Chief. So they put me back in the f*****g office. Little do they know, I couldn’t give two s***s about my career and I’m just trying to last these last two years until I retire without slitting someone’s throat.

Bob, welcome back. Your dreams were your ticket out, and your posts were ours. Read the whole NSFW thing.

Roll Tide: The Universal Greeting

Like aloha or shalom, “Roll Tide” is a phrase of tremendous cultural nuance. Thursday night, after the ‘Bama Championship Show, my Burbank host JSF and I took a stroll through the streets of downtown Pasadena, crowded with fans celebrating the Crimson Tide’s glorious victory.

Everyone was wearing crimson, while many of the ladies were stylishly accessorized in black-and-white houndstooth (if I have to explain what houndstooth means to a ‘Bama fan, you’re reading the wrong blog). And wherever they encountered each other, the signifier of recognition was shouted: “Roll Tide!” Here are a couple of enthusiastic coeds from Tuscaloosa:

And here is a video, for which I must apologize as being so dimly lit, but listen to this fan’s humorous narrative of the season followed by the classic Alabama kickoff cheer:

Here are more photos from this week’s trip:

Wednesday morning, my Twitter buddy Brittany Cohan met Donald Douglas and I in Costa Mesa and proved quite helpful at soliciting information about the Crimson Tide’s practice schedule.

Texas fans Wednesday at the Rose Bowl — they were in a cheerful mood prior to Thursday’s unstoppable onslaught of the Crimson QB Crushers.

Wednesday, outside the BCS media headquarters at the Newport Beach Marriott. The banner said, “Welcome Media,” which did not necessarily mean that they were going to give me credentials.

Being turned down for credentials didn’t prevent me from setting up the Sports Desk in the media hospitality suite in Newport Beach and poaching official BCS WiFi.

Hanging out with a sports writer for the Tuscaloosa paper at Wednesday’s media reception in Newport Beach. The BCS denied me credentials, but they couldn’t stop me from crashing their reception. (Suggestion to BCS fascists: Next year, have Department of Homeland Security protecting the buffet.)

An anonymous Alabama fan at Wednesday’s blogger meetup illustrates a shocking modification of the “Hook ‘Em Horns” symbol. He said, “This is for Nancy Pelosi,” whatever that means . . .

Jenny Erikson and Baldilocks at Wednesday’s blogger meetup, where they were equally oppressed by my corny jokes.

Friday morning, on JSF’s balcony in Burbank.

California Highway Patrol officers Friday afternoon at the Westin in Costa Mesa, waiting to escort the triumphant Tide to the airport for their victorious return to God’s Country.

Now, I’m en route to a Tea Party event in Altadena, before catching my flight back to Washington. ROLL TIDE! HIT THE TIP JAR! And in commemoration of this spectacular occasion, here is special music from the Leningrad Cowboys featuring the Red Army Choir:

Fabulous McCain Journalism Refreshes Alabama

Stacy’s still off getting his Gonzo on. I’ve been minding the shop, in my Geekzo fashion. This involved raising Stacy’s blood pressure significantly on at least one occasion, but I think that the peace offerings that await his return may prove sufficient. Also, for the Paco’s and Belvederes who aren’t in this yet, I’ll have to come back tomorrow night, as duty calls.

The View Out My Window

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.
No, I’m not going the Sully route, and I’m too lazy to upload a photo, but the view out my window tonight is beautiful. It’s a clear night, about 70 degrees outside, and the lights of Los Angeles stretch off in the distance as far as the eye can see.

Tuesday night, I crashed on Donald Douglas‘s sofa in Orange County. Wednesday night, I crashed in Mike Flynn‘s hotel room in Redondo Beach. Last night, I crashed on the sofa of JSF‘s apartment in Burbank. Tonight, I’m in the guest bedroom of a home high up in the hills near Griffith Park. They tell me LL Cool J lives just down the street. And the view is spectacular.

The gracious lady who owns this house fixed a delicious dinner of roast chicken and potatoes, with apple cake and coffee for dessert. (This being Hollywood, it was fair-trade organic coffee.) When I think back to Tuesday, and how depressed I was before leaving . . .

Why do I worry? Why don’t I have faith? Do you remember how this trip started? It was Dec. 6, and Alabama had just beaten Fl0rida for the SEC title:

Could I possibly rattle the tip-jar
hard enough to get to Pasadena?

I doubt it. As much as I’d like to go cover Alabama vs. Texas in the BCS game, I simply don’t think our readers would hit the tip jar to fund such a trip . . .

So much for my doubts, and despite being denied media credentials by the collegiate football oligarchs — fascists! — this has been a remarkably successful and productive trip. Not only did the Crimson Tide win the national world cosmic football championship, but readers proved once again that they are capable of supporting journalism, even when it’s merely a gonzo whim.

That was the fundamental challenge of Fear and Loathing in Pasadena. Sure, you had hit the tip jar for my shoe-leather trips to report IG-Gate, to cover the Sparkman case in Kentucky, the Hoffman campaign in NY-23 and the final stop of the Tea Party Express. But that was political news. Flying to California to cover the college football championship?

Crazy idea. Dan Collins, you magnificent bastard. If blog readers would support something as crazy as this, anything is possible. This was a demonstration of the latent grassroots power of the blogosphere.

Tomorrow — er, today, Saturday — I’ll be covering a Tea Party event in Altadena (if you’re in the L.A. area and you’re not a beady-eyed jerkoff, you need to be there) with several of the people Baldilocks named. Then I fly back home to Mrs. Other McCain and the six children. And then . . .

Well, there’s a Senate race in Massachusetts that’s making news. Maybe Mrs. Other McCain wouldn’t mind my heading up there Tuesday or Wednesday and staying through Election Day Jan. 19, or as long as the tip-jar keeps clinking. If you want me to go cover that story, let’s get started now, IYKWIMAITYD.
