Federalism Is A Liberal Canard?

by Smitty

Ann Althouse has the Perry quote:

“It is a liberal canard to say I am personally pro-life, but government should stay out of that decision.
If that is your view, you are not pro-life, you are pro-having your cake and eating it too.”

I have always held that life begins at conception, and abortion is murder. What other logically consistent argument is there?

However, the federal government was delegated power by the states to manage multi-state issues, e.g. national security. Not to fret individual choices. On this, and so many other issues, the fundamental problem in American politics is the flattening of government into a single, federal mass.

So, as a SoCon, I would pray for the state setting up a baby abattoir on every corner, and making it legal to call a commitment ceremony involving a chicken ‘marriage’. And I understand too that there is a 14th Amendment argument to make about not letting the unborn be chattel slaves who can be snuffed at will.

Nevertheless, my contention is that ALL of our current fiscal problems are rooted in DC’s poking its pen into personal lives, in terms of housing, retirement, sex, education, retirement, etc. We can either repent of that Progressive idiocy, or keep on shagging that chicken as we are.

SoCons have got to understand that, secretly, Progressives welcome the precedent set by passing legislation that justifies DC meddling with individuals.

Berkeley Professor Swindles Kochs Out of $150,000 for Global Warming Project

Don Surber fact-checked a Washington Post article and determined that Richard Muller, whom the Post touted as a “self-proclaimed climate skeptic” was, in fact, an early advocate for man-made global warming theory who “has re-branded himself a former skeptic — the better to sell global warming.”

But I think Surber missed the lead: Muller got $150,000 from the Charles G. Koch Foundation for his Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project. Who approved that grant? What did Muller tell the folks at Koch about himself and his project? Wouldn’t it suggest the possibility of research fraud, if Muller was willing to misrepresent his views in order to obtain funding or to promote his findings?

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for the Washington Post to follow up on that angle.

Nevada Sets Caucus Date for Feb. 4, Averting December Primary in N.H.

Florida set off a predictable chain reaction by jumping its primary to Jan. 31, and one consequence was the threat by New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner to move that state’s primary to as early as Dec. 6. The problem was that Iowa had moved its caucuses (originally scheduled Feb. 6) to Jan. 3, and Nevada initially announced its caucuses would move to Jan. 14. But New Hampshire state law requires their primary to be on a Tuesday at least seven days before any nominating event other than the Iowa caucuses, which made Jan. 10 unworkable.

The thermonuclear option was averted Saturday when Nevada voted to hold its caucuses Feb. 4. While Gardner has not yet officially announced the date for New Hampshire, it is likely that the schedule for the first five events will now be:

Iowa caucuses ………………… Tuesday, Jan. 3
New Hampshire primary …. Tuesday, Jan. 10
South Carolina primary …… Saturday, Jan. 21
Florida primary ……………… Tuesday, Jan. 31
Nevada caucuses ……………. Saturday, Feb. 4

This is not ideal — I’ll still have to leave for Iowa the day after Christmas — but it is better than if New Hampshire had jumped into December.

Holy Spinal Tap, Batman!

by Smitty

Enough to stopper even Biden

Tom Boddingham ordered a pair of custom novelty slippers off website Monster Slippers. Tom, who’s 6’7″ and possibly the son of a Yeti, ordered a size 14.50 for his left foot and 13 for his right because DAMN BRO YOUR FEET ARE A SIZE-AND-A-HALF APART?! Mine are only 1/2, freak!

When the 27-year-old ordered a special monster-design slipper to fit his oversized left foot, he was sent this size 1,450 one – because manufacturers failed to spot a decimal point.

He had requested a 14.5, as well as a smaller size 13 for his right foot. The pair cost £15.50.

However, manufacturers in China misread the measurement and accidentally made the whopping seven foot-long slipper, which was shipped to him along with the correct smaller size.

Apparently workers in the slipper factory assumed his giant order was for a shop window display.

Cheap PR stunt aside (now verified),

Another Installment In This Blog’s ‘Gentleman’ Jim Moran Apology Series

by Smitty

World renowned financial expert ‘Gentleman’ Jim Moran, at 2:00 in the following clip:

You can’t acquire financial security through earned income today; the only way you do it is by having an appreciating asset.

By ‘asset’ I presume he means a set of lobbyist donkeys, and ‘appreciating’ may amount to the kinds of things that Congressmen do which are perfectly legal, yet which, were details to leak, could lead to tar and feather shortages. Solyndra is the general sort of thing I’m talking about, though Moran is older, and likes him some DoD kickbacks.

I just love ‘Gentleman’ Jim’s commitment to American Exceptionalism on display in that quote. To paraphrase: “Give up.” Longer Moran: “If you don’t accept your government cheese with gratitude, we can force feed you.” Oh, and as somebody who has managed his mortgage and student loans gracefully and traditionally, thanks for the kick in the wallet, Congressman. Government market tampering: just keep the monkeys typing, so that they either arrive at Shakespeare or something an idea nearly as good as the market would have developed naturally.

The good news for VA-8 is that Patrick Murray is apparently going to mount another campaign. ‘Gentleman’ Jim is emblematic of every shark-jumping tendency in Congress. America: I’m sorry we haven’t drained this carbuncle on the public bottom yet. Just want you to know we’re trying.

Is Anyone Slimier Than Bill Maher?

“If you just presented the Republicans with Obama’s resume and didn’t say who it was, they would erect statues to this guy. He killed bin Laden, he killed Gaddafi, he saved us from a depression. I mean all, just, just the killing alone, Michelle Malkin would name her vibrator ‘Obama.'”
— Bill Maher, Oct. 21, 2011

Noel Sheppard calls Maher a “disgusting cretin,” and Donald Douglas at American Power remarks:

I don’t see Rachel Maddow, that great champion of the oppressed, putting up any objections. . . . Where’s the progressive outrage?

I’m sure the outraged progressives are too busy beating drums in their Occupy Wall Street protests to notice what Bill Maher says. And I’m sure Bill Maher is too busy beating something else to worry about anybody’s outrage.
